  • Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister
Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister Sarah E. Maier and Rachel M. Friars (University of New Brunswick, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Abstract: Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a multihyphenate landowner-gentry-traveller-autodidact- queer-lesbian, a compulsive journal writer who lived through the late-Romantic and well into the Victorian ages. While her journals have proven to be an iconographic artefact for queer and lesbian history, our interest here is in the public adaptations of Lister’s intentionally private writings for twenty-first-century audiences as found in the film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and the television series Gentleman Jack (2019–). Our discussion queries what it means to portray lived queer experience of the nineteenth century, how multimedia translate and transcribe Lister’s works onto screen, as well as how questions of legibility, visibility and ethics inevitably emerge in these processes. Keywords: adaptation, encryption, Gentleman Jack, journals, lesbianism, Anne Lister, queer history, queer visibility, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, transcription. ***** Lister ought to tell her own story before anyone interpreted it for her. Hers is, after all, the truly authentic voice of the nineteenth century woman caught up in a dilemma not of her own making. She ought to be allowed to tell it as it was, from her own point of view. (Whitbread 1992: xii) The recent appearance of a woman given the nickname ‘Gentleman Jack’ in a show focused on a queer woman depicts a subject who writes her life into encrypted journals.

  • Oxford Lecture 1 - Final Master
OXFORD LECTURE 1 - FINAL MASTER HOW TO GROW A CREATIVE BUSINESS BY ACCIDENT The legendarily bullish film director Alan Parker once adapted Shaw's famous dictum about the academic profession - "those who can, do. Those who can't teach." So far so familiar. And to many in this room, no doubt, so annoying. But he went on: "those who can't teach, teach gym. And those who can't teach gym, teach at film school." I appreciate that Oxford is not a film school, though it has a more distinguished record than any film school for supplying the talent that has fuelled the British film and TV industries for almost a century - on and off camera. Writers like Richard Curtis, who brought us 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, The Vicar of Dibley and Blackadder; or The Full Monty and Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy; directors of the diversity of Looking for Eric's Ken Loach and 24 Hour Party People's Michael Winterbottom; writer/directors like Monty Python's Terry Jones and the Thick of It's Armando Iannucci; actors and performers ranging from Hugh Grant to Rowan Atkinson; and broadcasting luminaries like the BBC's Director General Mark Thompson and News International's very own Rupert Murdoch. So, Oxford has been a pretty efficient film and TV school, without even trying. And perhaps that is Parker's point. Can what passes for creativity in film and TV ever really be taught? But here in my capacity as News International Visiting Professor of Broadcast Media (or if you prefer an acronym, NIVPOB - the final M is silent) I may be even further down Parker's food chain.

THESIS ESTIMATING CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRIMARY BIOMASS COMBUSTION TO FINE PARTICULATE MATTER AT SITES IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES Submitted by Amanda S. Holden Department of Atmospheric Science In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Science Colorado State University Fort Collins, CO Fall, 2008 COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY September 26, 2008 WE HEREBY RECOMMEND THAT THE THESIS PREPARED UNDER OUR SUPERVISION BY AMANDA HOLDEN ENTITLED ESTIMATING CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRIMARY BIOMASS COMBUSTION TO FINE PARTICULATE MATTER AT SITES IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES BE ACCEPTED AS FULFILLING IN PART REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE. Committee on Graduate work _______________________________________ Dr. Charles S. Henry (Outside Committee Member) _______________________________________ Dr. Sonia M. Kreidenweis (Committee Member) _______________________________________ Dr. Jeffrey L. Collett, Jr. (Adviser) _______________________________________ Dr. Richard H. Johnson (Department Head) ii ABSTRACT OF THESIS ESTIMATING CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRIMARY BIOMASS COMBUSTION TO FINE PARTICULATE MATTER AT SITES IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES Biomass combustion occurs throughout the world and has many implications for human health, air quality and visibility, and climate change. To better understand the impacts of biomass combustion in the western United States, six-day integrated fine particle samples were collected during the winter and summer seasons of 2004-2006 at seven IMPROVE sampling sites using Hi-Vol samplers. These sites included both urban and rural locations. Filter samples were analyzed for organic and elemental carbon, levoglucosan, and a suite of particulate ions. Levoglucosan, a thermal degradation product of cellulose, is a widely used tracer for primary biomass combustion. Measurements of levoglucosan and other carbohydrates were made using a new approach involving aqueous filter extraction followed by direct analysis using High Performance Anion Exchange Chromatography.
