Remediating the Eighties: Nostalgia and Retro in British Screen Fiction from 2005 to 2011
REMEDIATING THE EIGHTIES: NOSTALGIA AND RETRO IN BRITISH SCREEN FICTION FROM 2005 TO 2011 Thesis submitted by Caitlin Shaw In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2015 2 3 ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis studies a cycle of British film and television fictions produced in the years 2005-2011 and set retrospectively in the 1980s. In its identification and in-depth textual and contextual analysis of what it terms the ‘Eighties Cycle’, it offers a significant contribution to British film and television scholarship. It examines eighties- set productions as members of a sub-genre of British recent-past period dramas begging unique consideration outside of comparisons to British ‘heritage’ dramas, to contemporary social dramas or to actual history. It shows that incentives for depicting the eighties are wide-ranging; consequently, it situates productions within their cultural and industrial contexts, exploring how these dictate which eighties codes are cited and how they are textually used. The Introduction delineates the Eighties Cycle, establishes the project’s academic and historical basis and outlines its approach. Chapter 1 situates the work within the academic fields that inform it, briefly surveying histories and socio-cultural studies before examining and assessing existing scholarship on Eighties Cycle productions alongside critical literature on 1980s, 90s and contemporary British film and television; nostalgia and retro; modern media, history and memory; British and American period screen fiction; and transmedia storytelling. Chapter 2 considers how a selection of productions employing ‘the eighties’ as a visual and audio style invoke and assign meaning to commonly recognised aesthetic codes according to their targeted audiences and/or intended messages. -

There were two awards for Wolf Hall, with Mark Rylance receiving the BAFTA for Leading Actor, adding to his Supporting Actor win at the EE British Academy Film Awards earlier this year. The Peter Straughan-scripted drama, which chronicles the rise of Thomas Cromwell through Henry VIII’s royal court, also received the award for Drama Series. In the Supporting Actress category, Chanel Cresswell received her first BAFTA for her performance in This Is England ’90. The Sheffield-set drama, which spans three series and a feature film, also received the award for Mini-Series, adding to the Director: Fiction BAFTA Shane Meadows won at the Television Craft Awards a fortnight ago. Suranne Jones won the BAFTA for Leading Actress for her portrayal of a wife betrayed by her husband’s infidelity in Doctor Foster, while Tom Courtenay’s performance in Unforgotten earned him the award for Supporting Actor, his third BAFTA in total and 53 years since his first for Most Promising Newcomer. -

NEWS FOR television IMMEDIATE RELEASE Bristol-made productions light up this year’s festive TV schedule Eric, Ernie & Me – 9pm, 29 December, BBC Four Trollied Christmas special – 9.30pm, 24 December, Sky1 The Crystal Maze Christmas Celebrity Special – watch on 4oD now BRISTOL, 20 December 2017: Productions made in Bristol are set to light up TV screens this festive season, delighting fans of drama, comedy and gameshows. Premiering on 29 December at 9pm on BBC Four, Eric, Ernie & Me celebrates Eddie Braben, the comedy scriptwriter behind the success of Morecambe and Wise. The one hour drama made by Objective Fiction explores the relationship between Morecambe, Wise and Braben, who became known as The Golden Triangle. Eric, Ernie & Me – image courtesy Objective Fiction & BBC For over a decade, Braben penned Morecambe and Wise’s material, and reshaped the double act into the Eric and Ernie that the nation took to its heart. But it wasn’t all sunshine. The film culminates in the pair’s iconic 1977 Christmas Show, whilst showing the pressure and pain Braben went through to help create the screen work of Britain's most beloved double act. The two-week shoot took place in October at sets built in 8,000 sq. ft. of The Bottle Yard’s Studio 6 and at locations across Bristol, including Colston Hall, Mariners Drive in Stoke Bishop, Thingwall Park (Fishponds), The Wills Building (Bedminster), St Annes Board Mills Social Club (Redfield), Brislington United Reformed Church and Filwood Community Centre (Knowle West). Bristol Film Office assisted the production team with sourcing a host of locations, setting up recces and unit bases. -
