1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in the Guardian, June 2007
1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation. -

BARRIE AND THE BOYS 8. CHARLES FROHMAN 9. SCENES FROM LIFE 10. THE REST OF THE STORY Barrie and the Llewelyn-Davies boys visited Scourie Lodge, Sutherland—in northwestern Scotland—during August of 1911. In this group image we see Barrie with four of the boys together with their hostess. In the back row: George Llewelyn Davies (age 18), the Duchess of Sutherland and Peter Llewelyn Davies (age 14). In the front row: Nico Llewelyn Davies (age 7), J. M. Barrie (age 51) and Michael Llewelyn Davies (age 11). Online via Andrew Birkin and his J.M. Barrie website. After their mother's death, the five Llewelyn-Davies boys were alone. Who would take them in? Be a parent to them? Provide for their financial needs? Neither side of the family was really able to help. In 1976, Nico recalled the relief with which his uncles and aunts greeted Barrie's offer of assistance: ...none of them [the children's uncles and aunts] could really do anything approaching the amount that this little Scots wizard could do round the corner. He'd got more money than any of us and he's an awfully nice little man. He's a kind man. They all liked him a good deal. And he quite clearly had adored both my father and mother and was very fond of us boys. -
Shane Meadows' Country: This Is England (2006)
SHANE MEADOWS’ COUNTRY: THIS IS ENGLAND (2006) Carla Ferreira de Castro Universidade de Évora Portugal [email protected] This Is England is social realist film portraying racism and poverty in 1980s Britain through the eyes of Shaun, a 12 year old boy, who has lost his father in the Falklands war and as to come to terms with his own identity, the difficult transition from childhood to adolescence and the need to fit in a determined group/tribe/gang. The following article aims at analysing relevant aspects depicted from the film emphasizing the so much debated reality of life during 80s. In This is England Shane Meadows manages to rediscover his own self geography, by revisiting his adolescent years. It is a biographical film about the importance of peer pressure and the results of an excess of nationalism, at the same time it typifies some issues related to the 80s youth culture. -

Barrie Maggie Tonkin The author may be dead as far as Roland Barthes is concerned, but the news is yet to hit the street. Probably nothing speaks more loudly of the gap between academic literary criticism and the culture of reading outside the academy than the latter’s continuing obsession with the author. Barthes’s claim that the author is neither the originator nor the final determiner of textual meaning has assumed the status of orthodoxy in scholarly poetics. Whilst the early austerity has faded somewhat, such that discussion of the historical specificity of the author is no longer scorned in literary studies, the Romantic privileging of the author as the ‘fully intentional, fully sentient source of the literary text, as authority for and limitation on the “proliferating” meanings of the text’, as Andrew Bennett puts it (55), has never regained its former currency. -
A Review of New Historical Drama from the BBC
Eras Edition 9, November 2007 – http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/eras ‘Time-warp Television’ – A review of new historical drama from the BBC: Life on Mars, created by Mathew Graham, Tony Jordan and Ashley Pharoah, BBC, 2006. Robin Hood, created by Foz Allan and Dominic Minghella, BBC, 2006. Torchwood, created by Russell T. Davies, BBC, 2006. Robin Hood in an anorak and touting an anti-war message? Costume drama in the gritty back streets of 1970s Manchester? Clearly this is not your father’s BBC. While there is still plenty of Austen and Dickens for the purist, the BBC, long the home of waistcoats, mutton chops and empire waists, has breathed some new life into the historical drama with two series that seem to engage as much with the way we respond to history as to the historical setting itself. A cult and critical hit, Life on Mars, follows Manchester Police Detective Sam Tyler (played by John Simm) who is ‘transported’ back to 1973 after being hit by a car. Used to being a Detective Chief Inspector with expensive digs, a well-cut suit, and police-work governed by political correctness and computers, Sam finds himself demoted, dressed in a leather jacket, living in a dingy room with a Murphy-bed, and working with DCI Gene Hunt. Hunt, played with joyful relish by Philip Glenister, is the very antithesis of modern policing. He is unabashedly racist, sexist, homophobic and not above bashing the uncooperative suspect mid-interview. All guts and reaction, he is the ying to Sam’s yang, as it becomes clear that DI Tyler has lost the ability to trust his instincts. -
A Sensory Ethnographic Study of Therapeutic Landscape Experiences of People Living with Dementia in the Wider Community
Out and About: A Sensory Ethnographic Study of Therapeutic Landscape Experiences of People Living with Dementia in the Wider Community By Rahena Qaailah Bibi Mossabir (MA) Faculty of Health and Medicine Lancaster University Thesis submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) September 2018 0 0 DECLARATION I declare that this thesis is all my original work and I am the sole author. This work has not previously been published or presented for an award. All sources are acknowledged as References. It has been jointly funded by the Economics and Social Research Council and Age UK Lancaster. 1 ABSTRACT Whilst ageing in place is considered important for a healthier and a better quality of life for older people, there is yet a dearth of evidence on how older people with dementia negotiate and experience the wider community. The aim of the present study is therefore to explore experiences of social and spatial engagement in the wider community for people living with dementia in order to advance understandings of how their interactions in and with community settings impact on their health and wellbeing. Drawing on the theoretical framework of therapeutic landscapes and a sensory ethnographic methodology, I provide social, embodied and symbolic accounts of people’s everyday experiences and pursuits of health and wellbeing within their neighbourhood and beyond. An in-depth examination of socio-spatial interactions of nine people with dementia, seven of whom participated with family carers, is conducted by use of innovative interview methods (including photo-elicitation and walking interviews), participant observations and participant ‘diaries’ (kept for a period of four weeks). -
Jeremy Corbyn Under Attack but Enthusiastic Support Continues
Jeremy Corbyn under attack but enthusiastic support continues The furore over revelations in Lord Ashcroft's biography of David Cameron has temporarily driven attacks on Jeremy Corbyn from the front pages of the mainstream media - though only to the inside pages! But accusations about upper class debauchery in Cameron's student life, as well as that he knew about Ashcroft's tax-dodging non-dom status, serve to highlight why so many working class people have rallied behind Corbyn. He is seen to represent a different kind of politics. And the more the press attack his off- centre ties and his lack of adherence to 'tradition', the more firm his support becomes from those who are sick of establishment drone politicians. To ensure the anti-austerity politics that have won Corbyn such support are not imprisoned with just a few isolated individuals within the Labour Party leadership, his supporters must get organised. Movement This means a movement built in every town and city of the country and both inside and outside the structures of the Labour Party. Such an approach can appeal to the mass of working class people and take the first steps towards developing a party for the millions, not the millionaires. The media's ferocious attacks on Jeremy Corbyn have been unrelenting. The possibility of a left-wing Labour leader becoming prime minister at the next general election has sent many pro-capitalist commentators into a frenzy. Jeremy mustn't retreat in the face of this onslaught but should make a bold appeal to the over 250,000 people who elected him and his supporters beyond them, to ensure he has the necessary back-up to stand firm on his policies.
