  • (TU Dresden) Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals?
Accepted manuscript version of: Schwanebeck, Wieland. “Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena.” Contemporary Masculinities in the UK and the US: Between Bodies and Systems, edited by Stefan Horlacher and Kevin Floyd, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, pp. 75–98, doi:10.1007/978-3-319-50820-7. Wieland Schwanebeck (TU Dresden) Does the Body Politic Have No Genitals? The Thick of It and the Phallic Nature of the Political Arena Though it may not have required drastic proof, recent news from the political arena suggests that certain distinguished statesmen tend to rely on a candid exhibition of genitals in order to draw attention to their virility and, by implication, to their political power. Silvio Berlusconi made the headlines in 2010, when he insisted that the missing penis of a Mars statue be restored before the sculpture was deemed suitable to adorn his office as Italian Prime Minister, horrified reactions amongst art historians notwithstanding (cf. Williams). This anecdote sits comfortably amongst other tales from the bunga bunga crypt, yet one may as well wonder whether Berlusconi is not just a tad less inhibited than some of his colleagues when it comes to acknowledging that the body politic requires visible proofs of manhood. Slavoj Žižek has characterized the contemporary media environment as one in which it would not appear out of the question for a politician to “allow a hard-core video of his or her sexual shenanigans to circulate in public, to convince the voters of his or her force of attraction or potency” (208).

  • Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister
Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister Sarah E. Maier and Rachel M. Friars (University of New Brunswick, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Abstract: Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a multihyphenate landowner-gentry-traveller-autodidact- queer-lesbian, a compulsive journal writer who lived through the late-Romantic and well into the Victorian ages. While her journals have proven to be an iconographic artefact for queer and lesbian history, our interest here is in the public adaptations of Lister’s intentionally private writings for twenty-first-century audiences as found in the film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and the television series Gentleman Jack (2019–). Our discussion queries what it means to portray lived queer experience of the nineteenth century, how multimedia translate and transcribe Lister’s works onto screen, as well as how questions of legibility, visibility and ethics inevitably emerge in these processes. Keywords: adaptation, encryption, Gentleman Jack, journals, lesbianism, Anne Lister, queer history, queer visibility, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, transcription. ***** Lister ought to tell her own story before anyone interpreted it for her. Hers is, after all, the truly authentic voice of the nineteenth century woman caught up in a dilemma not of her own making. She ought to be allowed to tell it as it was, from her own point of view. (Whitbread 1992: xii) The recent appearance of a woman given the nickname ‘Gentleman Jack’ in a show focused on a queer woman depicts a subject who writes her life into encrypted journals.

From February to June of 2017, Ellie played the role of Marianne in Sean Foley's production of THE MISER alongside Griff Rhys Jones, Lee Mack and Matthew Horne at The Garrick Theatre in London's West End. She received some lovely write-ups: 'Ellie White brilliantly channels the plummy vowels of the (very) upper classes as Marianne.' - Whats on Stage 'Fringe favourite Ellie White is memorable, too, as the super-privileged Marianne, poshly-spoken to the point of incomprehension.' - Chortle 'Ellie White as Marianne is a surprise highlight of the evening, with her overly refined enunciation making her almost incomprehensible to the other characters.' - British TheatreS She had regular roles in ITV2’s GLITCHY, with Ryan Sampson, and @ELEVENISH and BBC2’s HOUSE OF FOOLS Series 2, in which she starred alongside creators Vic and Bob, Matt Berry and Morgana Robinson.
