Cohen, Advisor Anna J. Willow Reanne Frank Morgan Liu Copyright by Bernardo Ramirez Rios 2012 ii Abstract My dissertation focuses on the relationship of sport and community building. In Los Angeles, CA and Oaxaca, Mexico the cultural practice of basketball is a productive social tool that is used to enhance community relationships. This research starts with individual identity (micro) and the cultural motivations that relate to communities in Los Angeles and Oaxaca. I begin with an individual perspective to discuss the impact of prime cultural motivations on larger social processes (transnational, migration, globalization, etc). I used traditional anthropological methods (ethnography, participant observation, visual data collection) to examine the sport of Oaxacan basketball in Los Angeles and Oaxaca. Through an iterative process data was collected from 2007-2011 to develop an ethnographic account of Oaxacan basketball in Los Angeles and Oaxaca. Results from the data show that basketball in Oaxaca is a rich cultural tradition that has a significant history that pre-dates the “modern” explosion of sport during the last 25 years. I will discuss ethnographic and visual data to support my conclusion that Oaxacan basketball is a cultural sport with transnational and global outcomes. This research contributes to theoretical models of migration, sport, and identity by focusing on cultural practices. Gua- najuato is seat to The Festival Internacional Cervantino. This festival represents the essence of a Mexican region that highlights the Hispanic past as part of its identity discourse. Meanwhile, Oaxaca is famous because of the Guelaguetza, an indigenous traditional festival whose roots go back in time for fve centuries. Focused on cultural change and sustainability, tourist perception, identity narrative, and city theming, the analysis included anthropological and urban views and methodologies. Results show high contrasts between the analyzed events, due in part to antagonist (Indigenous vs. Hispanic) identities. Such tension is characteristic not only in Mexico but in most parts of Latin America, where cultural syncretism is still ongoing. Su encomienda es publicar textos que den cuenta de las fecun- das y distintas expresiones del arte y la cultura, principalmente las que provienen de personas y comunidades nativas del estado de Oaxaca. Los libros que conforman esta colección se organizan en tres series básicas, de acuerdo con los temas que abordan: Veredas, que atenderá los resultados de las investigaciones en los campos de la cultura y las socie- dades indígenas; Urdimbres, que mostrará la literatura indígena y las artes populares en sus variadas formas; y Glifos, que dará a conocer propuestas relacionadas con el fortalecimiento de las lenguas nativas de la entidad. La Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno de Oaxaca y la Dirección General de Culturas Populares e Indígenas del CONACULTA, ofre- cen al público en general estas páginas que manifiestan la riqueza y la valía de nuestras culturas ancestrales que hoy siguen vivas, para fortuna y goce de todas y todos.
