From the elegant, old-world architecture of Québec City to the rugged landscapes of the Charlevoix coast and Saquenay Fjord, Thompsen’s photographs highlight the amazing diversity of this charming region. A Dover resident and member of the New Hampshire Art and Seacoast Artist Associations, Thompsen has exhibited many images of his native New England and other places from his travels. He processes his digital images using high dynamic range techniques and artistic filters that give his images a unique, painterly look. Ha! Fjord du Saguenay Room with a View Horse-Drawn Carriage Calèches tour throughout the historic downtown of Québec City. This one waits for a fare on Rue Sainte- Anne. A calèche is a two-wheeled one-horse vehicle. The driver sits on the splashboard, a board on the front that catches the water and mud thrown up by the horses hooves and carriage wheels. Calèche tours The passenger seat can be calechesquebec.com covered by a folding top. These tours amble along the busy streets of downtown Quebec City, their drivers pointing out the sights. Rue Saint-Anne Québec City Near the historic Hotel Clarendon. Place-Royale Place-Royale is a cozy, cobblestoned plaza in the historic Lower Town section of Québec City. A sculpture of King Louis XIV anchors the center of the square. Flowers and park benches add to the atmosphere. Rue de la Place Québec City In the Petit Champlain area. Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church has a prominent location in the picturesque Place-Royale plaza. Founded in the late 1600’s, it was rebuilt following a battle against the British in 1759. The church is nestled in the Place-Royale plaza in the Lower Town section of the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires city. Designated a National Church Historic Site of Canada, the www.patrimoine-religieux.com church still serves as an active house of worship. 32 Rue Sous le Fort Québec City In the Petit Champlain area. Vieux-Port The Château Frontenac towers over the Vieux-Port section of Québec City. The expansive plaza seen here is a recently built park over what was a parking area. It is situated near the modern port terminal where cruise ships dock on their port-of-calls. Vieux-Port Vieux-Port, or Old Port, is marchevieuxport.com also the site of the Marche du Vieux Port, the city’s largest farmers market. Old Port area Québec City On the eastern edge of the city alongside the Saint Lawrence River. Musée de la Civilisation This innovative Québec City museum showcases exhibits on a wide range of subjects, from native cultures to technological marvels. Québec City Overlook The view from the steps leading up to La Citadelle highlights the working port and historical architecture of the city. The Terrasse Dufferin boardwalk runs along the rim of the walled city, passing by the iconic Château Frontenac. Battlefields Park quebecregion.com The steep climb up to La Citadelle offers sweeping views of the city below and the busy port on the Saint Lawrence River. Parc des Champs de Bataille Avenue St Denis Québec City The north side of La Citadelle and Battlefield Park. Fontaine de Tourny Spotlights freeze the water jets in this night scene of the fountain in front of the Parliament building in Québec City. The tower of the Parliament building can be seen in the evening sky along with the silhouette of a construction crane that is part of a major Fontaine de Tourny redevelopment of the quebecregion.com Parliament grounds. Boulevard Honoré-Mercier Québec City The fountain is located in a traffic circle in front of the Parliament building. La Fresque des Québécois This mural in the Port- Royale section of Québec City highlights many of the region’s famous figures and landmarks. At 420 square meters, this sizable mural highlights over 400 years of provincial history. Famous characters such as Samuel de Champlain, Jacques Cartier, Lord Dufferin, and La Fresque des Québécois many others adorn the wall. quebecregion.com 29 Rue Notre Dame Québec City The mural is painted on the side of a building near the Place-Royale plaza. Château Frontenac The elegant Fairmont le Château Frontenac hotel overlooks the Terrasse Dufferin in Québec City. Opened in 1893, this prominent landmark in the city’s skyline was constructed in a style from the French Renaissance. Designed by Bruce Price, the hotel was built for the Château Frontenac Canadian Pacific Railway fairmont.com/frontenac-quebec to attract upscale guests. It was named after the Count of Frontenac, the colonial governor in the 1600’s. 1 Rue des Carrières Québec City Hard to miss this amazing hotel, which can be seen on its perch above the city walls from many vantage points. Rue du Cul de Sac One of many quaint, cobblestoned streets in the Lower Town section of Québec City. The Château Frontenac overlooks this quiet street on an early summer morning. This is in the popular Petit Champlain area of the city, a very walkable section with many unique shops, cafes, and restaurants. Petit Champlain Believed to be the oldest quebecregion.com commercial district in North America. Rue du Cul-de-Sac Québec City A short street in the Lower Town off Rue Dalhousie. Everyone Loves a Parade Soldiers of Regiment 22e in dress uniform march from La Citadelle to downtown Québec City for a special occasion. Known as the Van Doos, this infantry segment of the Canadian Army has roots in the War of 1812. The Van Doos name comes from Royal 22nd Regiment vingt-deux, French for vandoos.com twenty-two. The regiment is headquartered in La Citadelle, part of the city’s historic fortifications. Côte de la Citadelle Québec City This street runs from La Citadelle down to Rue St- Louis where the Parc de l’Esplanade offers some welcome greenspace. Standing Guard A uniformed soldier of Regiment 22e stands guard at La Citadelle, a fortification in Québec City. An active military installation, the fort is built high above the Saint Lawrence River on the Cap Diamant. It is the oldest La Citadelle military building in Canada lacitadelle.qc.ca and also serves as the official residence for the Canadian monarch and governor general. Tours are offered and a museum highlights the history of the fort and the Canadian Army, 1 Côte de la Citadelle Québec City Located south of Lower Town and north of the expansive Plains of Abraham. Porte Kent Porte Kent is one of several fortifications on the walls built to protect the city. There are almost 3 miles of walled fortifications surrounding Québec City. One the last remaining installations of its kind in North America, it was built Portes de Québec back in the late 1600’s. quebecregion.com There are several porte’s which protect the entrances to the city. The illumination on this gatehouse contrasted nicely with the distant mountain backdrop and city lights. Rue Dauphine Québec City Located near Rue Daphine, Porte Kent can also be viewed while walking along the top of the wall from the Parc de l’Esplanade of Rue St-Louis. Montmorency Falls Taller than Niagara, this waterfall is only minutes from downtown Québec City. A cable car whisks visitors to the top, which features a pedestrian suspension bridge hovering over the lip of the falls. The long series of stairs on the right provide an alternate Montmorency Falls way down. sepaq.com 5300 Boulevard Sainte-Anne Québec City Montmorency Falls is just a few minutes drive from downtown. Charlevoix Coast A bay of the Saint Lawrence river seen from an overlook near Baie-Saint- Paul along the Charlevoix coast in Québec province. Named after a French Jesuit priest Pierre François- Xavier de Charlevoix who traveled through the region in the 1700’s. Charlevoix Highways snake between tourisme-charlevoix.com the rolling hills between the Saint Lawrence and the Laurentian Mountains. The Flavour Trail is an agrotourism tour that highlights local producers of cheeses, chocolates, organic meats, and beers Baie-Saint-Paul Québec Province The photograph was taken from a scenic vista just north of the village of Baie-Saint-Paul on the Charlevoix coast north- east of Quebec City. Petit lac Ha! Ha! A beautiful scene of an amusing lake nestled among the rugged mountains at Parc National des Grands-Jardins. Encompassing over 100 square miles of scenic beauty, this national park lives up to its name which means great garden.
