ABSTRACT In nearly 240 years 53 landslides have occurred along the Quebec City Promontory, causing 88 fatalities mainly by rockfalls. In October 2004 a rockfall reached the road close to the 1889 rockfall event which killed 35 people and injured 30 others. Using a terrestrial Lidar scanner (TLS) a 3D image was created. Seven joint sets were accurately determined in agreement with previous research. The TLS imagery permit the estimation of the volumes involved in the past instabilities and analysis of the mechanisms: a rockslide with several joint sets cutting the rock mass into parallelepiped shaped blocks.

  • Quebec City, Quebec Destination Guide
Quebec City, Quebec Destination Guide Overview of Quebec City Perched atop Cap Diamant (Cape Diamond) and overlooking the Saint Lawrence River, Quebec City was first settled by the French in 1608 and named for a native Algonquin word meaning 'where the river narrows'. The ambience, lively spirit, high safety rating and comfortable blend of past and present make Quebec's provincial capital worthy of its place among the world's top cultural destinations. The cradle of French civilisation in North America and still notably European in spirit, the historic Old Quebec neighbourhood has an unmistakable charm. Small cafes, cosy restaurants, classy boutiques, lively terraces, elegant squares, theatres, museums and street performers all come together in a fascinating weave of old-world allure. Millions of visitors are drawn to Quebec City every year, savouring the famed Quebec gourmet scene and the beauty of the historic old district's winding cobbled streets, where 17th and 18th-century stone houses, churches, parks and a number of monuments still stand. The city is included on UNESCO's World Heritage List and is one of the only fortified cities in the Americas. Despite having been ceded to the British in 1759, the city's population remains 95 percent French-speaking, lending a definite joie de vivre and French elegance to the atmosphere. Key Facts Language: The official languages are English and French (spoken predominantly in Quebec). Passport/Visa: All visitors must hold a valid passport. We recommend that passports always be valid for six months after intended period of travel. Visitors are required to hold onward or return tickets, all documents needed for the next destination and sufficient funds to cover the period of intended stay.

Your ship will first call Quebecat City, capital of Canada’s Beautiful Province, located on the St. Lawrence estuary and founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Do not miss discovering this charming and lively city where the historic neighbourhood of Old Quebec, with its ramparts and fortifications, is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. You will then enjoy a magnificent sail that will allow you to get as close as possible to many marine mammals taking refuge in the dramatic fjord of Saguenay Bay. At the mouth of Saguenay River, you will reach Tadoussac. This National Park is also an unmissable site for whale watching as the mammals gather to feed before winter. Further on, you will reach Percé, one of the most scenic villages of Quebec, close to a National Park famed for its natural, historical and geological heritage. Le Dumont-d'Urville will then cruise along the coasts of Nova Scotia, home to great historical towns and villages of unrivalled cachet. Then you will head south Barto Harbor on Mount Desert Island, discovered by Samuel de Champlain in 1604. This small bustling town on the north-east coast of the state of Maine is a seaside resort whose appeal lies in its stunning landscapes, including those of Acadia National Park. At the tip of the Cape Cod peninsula, the East Coast atmosphere is reminiscent of the chic and discrete charm of the French west coast, with beautiful houses, ocean spray and an easy lifestyle.
