GREENSIDE HIGH SCHOOL Newsletter: Sports Awards “Never say never because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.” – Michael Jordan Special Edition 4 21 August 2018 GREENSIDE HIGH SCHOOL Dear Parents, Students and Staff Geers Avenue, Greenside, This special volume celebrates Johannesburg, 2193 Greenside High School’s sportsmen PO Box 84042, Greenside, 2034 and women, who were acknowledged T 011 646 0113/4 or for their skill and contributions 011 486 0762/3/4/5/7 F 011 646 2436 during Term 3. E [email protected] We applaud the learners who www.greensidehigh.co.za received awards. Well done, Greensiders! CHESS Chess at Greenside High has grown tremendously and, for the first time, we had TWO full junior teams with reserves. The Grade 8s of 2018 have shown a love for the game and have been instrumental in shaping chess. The first junior team, performing in Section A, challenged highly-rated players in the province. The second junior team won most of their matches. This was heart-warming and brought a lot of hope to the learners. The senior team struggled a bit, but individually they played brilliantly. We have acquired the services of a new coach and, without a doubt, we are reaping the rewards. His knowledge of the game is impeccable and he has taught our players tactics and skills. - Mr N Liebenberg CHESS: TEAM AWARD “Every chess master was once a “Chess is the gymnasium of the beginner.” – Irving Chernev mind.” – Blaise Pascal Jefferson Keutche CHESS CONTINUED. PAGE 3 SENIOR FULL COLOURS Harshan has been playing chess for Greenside High School for four years now. In his junior years, his team was solid, winning most of their matches. His analysis of the game has always been commendable. He has also been our opening player this season. He has faced players who normally play in provincial tournaments - and beat them. In the absence of the captain, Harshan has taken on the role and has done well. His game has improved enormously and he is deserving of Senior Full Colours for chess. Harshan Pilay The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning.” – Pele BEST CHESS PLAYER Harshan Pilay SQUASH PAGE 4 SQUASH This year, with about thirty-five boys in Greenside High’s squash club, we had a very successful season – especially with the U16 age group. The U16 squash boys won the C-league, with St Peter’s College coming second. The U16 boys in the B-league managed to secure a place in the finals against St Stithian’s College and defeat them! Pilate has been the team captain for the last two seasons - a responsibility which he has actively executed. He has always kept the best interest of his team mates in mind. Pilate finished consistently in the Top 20 during each season and represented the school at a regional level, on four occasions. Pilate is a quiet young man, with a determined spirit and a “never-say-die” attitude. His presence and determination will be missed when he is no longer at Greenside High. It is, therefore, only fitting that Greenside High School honour Pilate by awarding him Full Colours for Cross Country. RIPS JOHNSTON TROPHY FOR BOYS HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE YEAR Zamani Sachiti TROPHY FOR BEST HOCKEY TEAM OF THE YEAR Boys First Team HIGHLIGHTS NETBALL PAGE 8 NETBALL I believe that the quality of a sport’s team rests on its performance throughout a whole season. Winning one game is wonderful, but is not a true testimony to the ability of a team. Having said that, it is fitting to acknowledge the 2018 Netball girls’ accomplishments. We had an extremely challenging and gruelling season which started in February. After several rounds of trials, the squads for each age group were selected, and they were put to the test in our first games, which commenced in early March. Since then, we have participated in district trials, numerous festivals and derby days. The girls gained a lot of experience playing schools that are in higher leagues than they, and their commitment and humility during these tournaments are commendable. More important is how the girls performed in their league games. This season we played against the following schools: Reddford House, Northcliff High, Ferndale High, the Deutsche School and Northriding High. The girls achieved brilliance - every team - in every age group won every league game this season. Greenside is, therefore, currently undefeated in our league, which achievement has not occurred in several years. We are exceptionally proud of all of our outstanding netball players and our incredible coaches, Ms Nhleko, Ms Yapi, Ms Hoon and Ms Smyth, as this season’s outstanding results would not have been achieved without them. - Ms S dos Santos TEAM AWARD Gabisile Ndlazi Makgotso Mashele Niza Kasakanta Olwam Rini JUNIOR HALF COLOURS Ashleigh Kuetche JUNIOR FULL COLOURS Onenda Olenga “You only get belief from actually doing the work beforehand. We started with a rugby camp, for which boys from all ages joined us over the weekend for some tough training, late nights and early mornings. The boys were drilled all the time not only physically, but mentally as well, which experience helped them prepare for the long season ahead. As the season started, the boys did not realise that this year they had more games to play than they have ever had, but Greenside really stepped up and never gave up, even against schools with much stronger rugby teams. We are eager to see what happens next year and to see our boys grow stronger. RUGBY CONT.
