In Memoriam

Giuseppe Cinnirella Beppe Cinnirella, World ’s secretary general from 1981 to 2005, passed away after a long battle with cancer on Friday 4 January 2019. He was also an international judge and a technical official at the 1980 Olympic Games. Through ailing health, Cinnirella remained engaged with the success of the federation, continuing to serve on its constitution and rules committee. Hyundai Hyundai Motor Company and World Archery have extended their partnership for an additional three years, following the conclusion of the two brands’ initial agreement that began in 2016. The new deal comes into effect immediately and runs until the end of 2021. Hyundai Motor and its affiliates have long been supporters of the sport of archery, both in Korea and

Fivics World Archery and Fivics have signed a landmark 10-year sponsorship deal that sees the Korean manufacturer support the international federation’s global development projects, event portfolio and promotional initiatives. It is the longest partnership to be agreed within the archery industry to date. Fivics is based outside of Seoul in Korea and manufacturers a complete range of archery products from bows to target faces.

Archery Trade Association The Archery Trade Association has launched a rebrand, new vision and new mission statement with long-term goals for the growth of the industry to start its 2019 trade show in Louisville, USA. The Archery Trade Association represents the interests of manufacturers, distributors and retailers in the archery industry. Founded in 1953 and previously called the Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization, the Archery Trade Association name was adopted in 2003. Read more: https://archy.re/2TML9sX

Congress

Call for nominations Elections will take place for 39 positions at congress in 2019. The full list of positions up for election is available in a summary file. In addition, elections for positions on the athletes committee will take place during the World Archery Championships and the election for the athlete representative on the para archery committee will take place during the World Archery Para Championships.

The deadlines for submitting nomination forms is as follows:

4 March 2019 • First vice president (1) • Vice president (1) • Executive board member (4) • Board of Justice and Ethics (5) • Committee members (28)

3 May 2019 • Para archery athlete representative (1)

10 May 2019 • Athlete committee members (4, one each recurve man, recurve woman, compound man and compound woman)

World Archery is committed to gender equity across its organisation and nominations for female candidatures to all positions are welcome. To ensure the impartiality of the board of justice and ethics, nominations of individuals who do not hold an active official position in a member association are also welcome.

Nomination forms are available on the World Archery website. Complete documentation for the upcoming congress will be distributed to member associations on 13 March 2019.

Members

Affiliations The Jordan Archery Association and Syrian Arab Archery Federation were accepted as World Archery temporary members on 16 January 2019. A decision on their full membership will be taken at World Archery Congress on 1-2 June 2019. Applications from other potential member associations are still in the process of being acknowledged.

India On 16 January 2019, secretary general Tom Dielen sent an email to BVP Rao and the rest of the association administration informing them that World Archery did not recognise the outcome of the general assembly held on 22 December 2018, due to the constitution used being never formally approved. This includes BVP Rao’s election as president. At this time, the Archery Association of is recognised as a World Archery member in good standing and no penalty or suspension has

Nigeria Mohammed Baba Abdullahi, president of the Nigeria Archery Federation, was elected deputy secretary general of the Nigerian Olympic Committee on 20 December in the city of Yola. He will serve in the position for a four-year term. Abdullahi has been president of Nigeria’s archery association since March 2016. He is also CEO of Nigeria Olympic Hospitality House and a board member of World Archery Africa.

Achievements

Athletes of the Year Public voting is still open for World Archery’s 2018 Athlete of the Year awards across six categories: recurve men, recurve women, compound men, compound women, para men and para women. Nominees include the four Hyundai Archery Final winners, plus continental champions and world number ones. World record Alberto Simonelli’s qualification from the 2019 Nimes Archery Tournament has been ratified as a new para archery world record after he shot 594 out of a possible 600 points for the 60- 18-metre ranking round. He had held the record at 590 points since February 2018. A world record has been shot at all four stages of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series to date. Read more: https://archy.re/2Mt2DZ6

Events

Nimes 2019 Janine Meissner, Braden Gellenthien, Kang Chae Young and Lee Seungyun took the individual titles at the 2019 Nimes Archery Tournament, fourth event of this inaugural Indoor World Series. Meissner shot the best final of the event, scoring 149-points for the 15-arrow 18-metre match in a win over So Chaewon.

Braden Gellenthien found himself in a 10-to-win situation with his final arrow for the second Indoor Archery World Series tournament in a row. In , he missed it and the match went to a shoot-off, from which Braden came out better. In Nimes, he delivered the 10 he needed to beat Kris Schaff in regulation.

Outdoor world record holder Kang Chae Young beat 14-year-old Casey Kaufhold in a four-set recurve women’s final, 6-2, and

2013 World Archery Champion Lee Seungyun bested Sergii Makarevych, also in four sets.

Individual winners in Nimes received 1000 points towards the Indoor Archery World Series elite ranking. Each climbed to the top of their respective lists ahead of the last stage and final of the circuit, which takes place in Las Vegas on 9 February.

Vegas Shoot 2019 The Vegas Shoot has received a record 3600-plus entries in 2019, making this year’s event the largest in history, with organisers expecting to hit the 3700 mark. The event has doubled in size since 2013. Registration is still open until Thursday 7 February, the day before the competition begins. The Vegas Shoot is the largest indoor archery tournament in the world. It lasts three days and also hosts the Indoor Archery World Series Final in the evening of the second day. Paris 2024 Archery was included in the list of 22 sports that the International Paralympic Committee has announced will comprise the programme of the 2024 Paralympic Games in , . The programme will remain the same in 2024 as in 2020 when the next Paralympics take place in . The archery venue at Les Invalides is one of the most iconic spots in Paris and will likely be one of the most memorable and recognisable events of the Paralympics in 2024. Coaching

Education Marja Woortman has been successfully certified as a World Archery level 1 coach trainer. Not only can she assist now the coaching education programme from her country, but she can also instruct the level 1 programme worldwide in three languages: German, Afrikaans and English.

World Archery Americas A continental judge seminar will be held in Medellin, on 29 April to 1 May 2019, right after the stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup. It will be conducted in Spanish by World Archery Americas Judge Committee members Sergio Font and Adam Martinez. The official invitation has been released and distributed to all national federations in the Americas.

Coach trainer course in Twenty-eight people took part in a coach trainer course in Shanghai, China from 7 to 16 January 2019. The course contributes to a wider shift in China to develop archery at the grassroots level. A coach trainers course will be held in Morocco in February 2019.

OS course in Chad An Olympic Solidarity archery coaching course was held in Chad’s capital city of N’Djamena on 8-17 December 2018. It was attended by 16 male and three female participants coming from across the country. Course leader Carlos Freitas praised the combined effort of the Chadian Archery Federation, World Archery and Olympic Solidarity. The course also included a module on building PVC bows.

Development

Caribbean Developmental Championships World Archery Americas and the Dominican Federation of Archery invite archers of the continent to compete at the third Caribbean Beginners and Developmental Championships on 28- 30 June in , Dominican Republic. A second category, called ‘developmental’, has been added in 2019. The developmental competition will take place over 50 metres – recurve at 122cm target faces and compound at 80cm faces with 5-10 scoring zones – with no special limitations regarding

equipment. Archers in this category may not have represented their countries at any previous world ranking event. For further information, please contact [email protected] or [email protected].
