The list covers significant itinerant international events (rather than annual international events based in the UK) which have been discussed with UK Sport as events that are of interest to host. All event hosting opportunities identified here remain subject to further discussions between partners, potentially including detailed feasibility work. It is therefore possible, and indeed likely, that some of the events on this list will not progress to bid stage. This information is gathered, updated, and shared across the UK’s event hosting partners every 6-12 months by UK Sport. The purpose of sharing the information is to enable high-quality and informed strategic hosting discussions to take place between sports and cities. These multi-tiered partnerships are fundamental to the UK’s success as a place to host incredible international sporting events. Specific target years have not been listed for the future hosting opportunities, although many sports have a view on the year(s) that they would be most likely to pursue. A discussion is therefore required between cities and sports regarding the timing of such future opportunities. The events on this list span the next 10 years. With regards to the ‘mega’ events, these are itinerant event properties which are seen as the pinnacle of their sport at World level and which have significant staging costs, attract more than 100,000 live spectators, entail considerable delivery complexity and require extensive public funding and guarantee commitments. UK Sport has worked in partnership with DCMS and the lead events agencies in the home nations to agree a UK Mega Events Policy Framework. This helps to reduce the likelihood of internal bidding conflict, enhance the potential to collaborate, and optimise the sequencing of mega events across the UK for maximum impact. It is likely that some events on this list (primarily World Series events) will be secured for the UK on a fixed-term multi-year basis. In these cases, the event has only been listed once here. A discussion will be required with sports to understand the timeframes for such series. In addition to the international hosting targets listed, NGBS may also have a list of National events which they wish to discuss. Future hosting strategies are constantly being reviewed by partners here in the UK, and as a result some sports/disciplines/events that might be expected to appear on this list may be missing as they complete those reviews. Whilst many events on this list will be eligible to be considered for events funding by UK Sport, some will not. UK Sport investment and support is guided by its Events Investment Principles and by the Gold Event Framework. Further discussion may be required with UK Sport to understand potential to support specific events. Page | 3 .

  • Aileen Riggin Soule: a Wonderful Life in Her Own Words
Aileen Riggin Soule: A Wonderful Life In her own words The youngest U.S. Olympic champion, the tiniest anywhere Olympic champion and the first women's Olympic springboard diving champion was Aileen Riggin. All these honors were won in the 1920 Olympics by Miss Riggin when she had just passed her 14th birthday. If no woman started earlier as an amateur champion, certainly no woman pro stayed on the top longer. Aileen Riggin never waited for opportunities to come her way. In 1924 at Paris, she became the only girl in Olympic history to win medals in both diving and swimming in the same Olympic Games (silver in 3 meter springboard and bronze in 100 meter backstroke). She turned pro in 1926, played the Hippodrome and toured with Gertrude Ederle’s Act for 6 months after her famous Channel swim. She made appearances at new pool openings and helped launch “learn to swim programs” around the world. She gave diving exhibitions, taught swimming, ledtured and wrote articles on fashion, sports, fitness and health for the New York Post and many of the leading magazines of her day. She also danced in the movie "Roman Scandals" starring Eddie Cantor and skated in Sonja Henie's film "One in a Million." She helped organize and coach Billy Rose's first Aquacade in which she also starred, at the 1937 Cleveland Exposition. She was truly a girl who did it all. When in 1996, while attending the Olympic Games in Atlanta as America’s oldest Olympic Gold medalist, she was asked if she still had any goals left in life, she said: "Yes.

Recent progress in therapy has meant that haemophiliacs are now encouraged to participate in sports, although various guidelines have recommended that they avoid activities where risks outweigh benefits. In order to evaluate the type of sports undertaken by haemophiliacs and the benefits or risks associated with each sport, we conducted a questionnaire- based study. The questionnaire was sent to 124 patients. Among the 80 patients who responded, 71 (90%) currently participated in or had previously participated in a physical activity. Among them, 56 (70%) still played a sport. Nearly all sports were cited in the answers, the most frequently played by these 56 haemophiliacs being swimming (59%), cycling (44%), walking (43%), table tennis (33%), soccer (33%) and tennis (31%). Fifty-six patients reported a benefit in doing a sport: somatic (79%), psychological (80%) or social (62%). Thirty haemophiliacs (42%) reported at least one accident or incident linked to sport.

  • Anuj at the 2009 Indoor Cricket World Cup in Australia
The ICCA Cricket Club My 2009 Indoor Cricket World Cup Journey To Australia Selection I will fondly remember that day in April when I received a call informing me of my selection for the England U16 indoor cricket squad to play in the forthcoming World Cup tournament in Australia in October 2009. Mike Gatting had made the squad announcements at the Bristol training centre but not confident of selection, I did not attend this event! Having played indoor cricket from the age of 8, I was confident of my abilities but when I saw those big lads at the trials, I thought I had made a mistake. Of course I was overwhelmed and proud to have made it to the initial squad. The task now was to make it to the final squad of 12 players for the tournament. Preparation Our pre-tournament training was mostly based in Bristol over a period of six months. This involved rigorous fitness training as well as honing the skills of playing competitive indoor cricket matches. On a few occasions we played against the U19s and the men’s teams to toughen our approach. Indoor cricket was invented in Australia where they have over a hundred centres compared to our six! Needless to say, the international level of competition was expected to be very strong. This is the fastest format of the game and is gradually gaining popularity in all major Test playing countries. The ECB is taking control over the game from this year and it is anticipated that more quality facilities will be available throughout the country in the coming years.
