SEPTEMBER 2019 Office Staff Recovering from assault World Archery development and education director Pascal Colmaire is recovering after being the victim of a violent assault in Uganda where he was delivering an Olympic Solidarity level two coaching course in the capital city of Kampala. Pascal was attacked on the last evening of the course, 3 September, while walking nearby his hotel, and was left with several skull fractures and damaged eyesight. Melany Postigo, who was working in the World Archery Excellence Centre and spending half of her time on development and education projects, has transferred to a full-time role at the World Archery office as development projects coordinator. She is now responsible for all Olympic Solidarity matters and is coordinating the coaching seminar at the Centre. Her email address is [email protected]. Carlos Freitas, who was already assisting Pascal with the online training system, will now coordinate the education project with the World Academy of Sport. He can be reached at [email protected]. She will assist the new head of events and marketing, Thomas Aubert, and head of events and logistics, Fernando Suarez, in the department’s day-to-day operations. The website ‘worldarchery.org’ and email addresses ending ‘@archery.org’ will remain active but going forward, the primary URL will be ‘worldarchery.sport’ and all office emails will end with ‘@archery.sport’. Obituary Jean-Michel Piquet Long-time Belgian international recurve archer Jean-Michel Piquet died on Friday 27 September 2019. The 48-year-old shot at international tournaments until 2007 and also organised national level events in Belgium. Jean-Michel’s funeral will take place on Wednesday 2 October 2019. A decision on their full membership will be taken at World Archery Congress in 2021. Online chats World Archery is holding monthly online calls with member associations. Participation is free but requires prior registration – links are provided directly to member associations by email. It is up to them to decide who is best suited to participate. World Archery Americas World Archery Americas will hold the 2021 World Games continental qualification tournament during the world ranking event in Medellin on 1-7 June 2020. The same event will host qualifier for the first Pan American Youth Games, also due to take place in 2021 in the Colombian city of Cali. The continental qualifier for the Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place during the Pan American and Parapan American Championships in March in Monterrey, Mexico. Achievements Longines Prize USA compounders Braden Gellenthien and Alexis Ruiz won the 2019 Longines Prize for Precision awards after shooting 442 and 409 10s in qualification and individual matchplay across the Hyundai Archery World Cup season. The Prize for Precision is awarded annually to the most accurate archers. It is the second time that Braden has won the award. The first was in 2013. Read more: https://archy.re/2kwi0qg Nations Award The USA finished top of the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup nations ranking to win the annual nations award for a record seventh time since the introduction of the international circuit in 2006. Korea was second and Turkey came third. The ranking combines all the points won by a country’s individual athletes and teams over the course of a single World Cup season. Read more: https://archy.re/2mTITVT September 2019 World Archery News Page 3 World records Casey Kaufhold’s score of 675 out of a possible 720 points for the 72-arrow 70-metre ranking round has been officially ratified as a new recurve junior women’s world record. Kaufhold, 15, shot the score on 8 September 2019 in Annville, USA. She is the first archer from outside of Korea to hold the record. Five more double qualification records were set at the same tournament and several others over the past two months. Read more: https://archy.re/2mRGN8Y Events Calendar 2020 World Archery has released the calendar for the 2020 Hyundai Archery World Cup season. The 15th season of the Hyundai Archery World Cup will see elite archers compete at stages in Guatemala City, Shanghai and Berlin from April to June 2020. A final, whose host is yet to be announced, is scheduled for the end of September. There is no deadline for bidding for the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final as each application is assessed upon submission. Bids for World Archery events are accepted from member associations, cities and companies. Read more: https://archy.re/2mYB8yc Road to Tokyo Reigning Olympic Champion Chang Hye Jin has been eliminated from the selection process for the Korean team and will not defend her title at the Games in Tokyo next summer. Chang finished 22nd in the second round of squad selections, which finished on 24 September 2019. Only 20 men and 20 women advanced to the next phase. Kang Chae Young and Lee Woo Seok lead Korean selections after two rounds. Read more: https://archy.re/2lnaG0v Moscow 2019 The international archery season came to a close at the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final. Thirty-two of the world’s best athletes took to the arena next to Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on 6-7 September. Colombia’s Sara Lopez and Brady Ellison each went on to win a record fifth Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion crown. On compound Friday, Lopez beat World Archery Champion Natalia Avdeeva of Russia, 149-139, to take the women’s gold in Moscow. Dutch world number two Mike Schloesser defeated world number one Braden Gellenthien of the USA, 147-144, to take the compound men’s crown. On the second day of competition, world number one Kang Chae Young beat Chinese Taipei’s Tan Ya-Ting, 6-4, to win the recurve women’s gold medal in Moscow at her World Cup Final debut. September 2019 World Archery News Page 4 Brady Ellison completed an incredible season where he became world champion, broke the 70-metre ranking round world record and rose to the top spot in the world rankings, with a 6-2 victory over Mauro Nespoli in Moscow. It is the first time since 2019 that archers from four different countries have won the circuit titles. Read more: https://archy.re/2kdEcFn Asia Cup 2019 Ruman Shana defeated Shi Zhenqi of China to take recurve men’s gold at the third leg of the 2019 Asia Cup in the Philippines and become the first archer from Bangladesh to win a continental tournament in five years. The 24-year-old won three medals in total in Clark City. China won the other four gold medals available on recurve finals day at the Asia Cup. Malaysia and Australia collected the compound titles. Aisyah Norazam and Juwaidi Mazuki won the individual compound titles as Malaysia totalled 10 podiums – and collected four golds. Malaysia finished second in the medal table behind China, which won four gold medals during recurve finals. Bangladesh was third thanks to Ruman Shana’s recurve men’s gold. The competition was also the test event for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games. Read more: https://archy.re/2kSPM9c Transplant Games The 2019 Summer World Transplant Games took place on 17-23 August in Newcastle, Great Britain and attracted more than 1400 athletes from 53 countries to compete over 16 sports. Thirty-five of those 1400 athletes were archers. The 15 women and 20 men represented 10 nations from four continents. This upcoming indoor season also includes stops in Macau, Luxembourg, Rome, Sydney and Las Vegas. The tournaments are open entry, meaning archers do not have to be a member of a national team to compete. Registration for the first five events is completed through World Archery’s extranet. Entries for the Vegas Shoot are accepted through the tournament’s official website.
