Nonetheless, I will try to be up to the job helping to select the last ascents around the world and to suggest new places but always taking care to include ascents in the Alps and close to home. • Alps & Dolomites 2015
Area Notes John Harlin Rob Fairley, 1969. (Acrylic on board. 150cm x 120cm. Destroyed.) 269 LINDSAY GRIFFIN Alps & Dolomites 2015 or a variety of reasons – weather, politics and, in the case of Nepal, Fearthquakes – significantly fewer major new lines than normal were completed in the world’s mountains during 2015. This was also true in the Alps, where dry conditions and, during the summer, incredibly warm tem- peratures, confined most to objectively safe rock. Although there were a number of new additions to the Mont Blanc range, there appear to have been no leading first ascents. On 18 August 1983, three of the top alpinists of that time, Eric Bellin, Jean-Marc Boivin and Martial Moioli started up the compact granite face to the right of the initial corner system of the American Route on the south face of the Fou, emerging at the summit the following night under a full moon. Their route, Balade au Clair de Lune, is mixed free and aid, and has seen few repeats. There are several fine but often poorly protected pitches of free climbing up to 6c, and at least one demanding aid pitch of A3/A4 (hooks and copperheads) above the point where the line crosses the famous Diagonal Crack. Ascents of the south face have declined in recent years due to the danger of access during the summer months. Climbers now either choose spring to approach on ski or the more lengthy option of traversing the main ridge of the Aiguilles from the Aiguille du Midi and abseiling to the base of the route.

Alpina A semiannual review of mountaineering in the greater ranges Yosemite National Park On the walls. This past June, Selah Schneiter, age 10, climbed the Nose on El Capitan (3,000 ft on the 7,569-ft peak) with her father and one other climber. They ascended in five days. Selah is the youngest known climber to go up any line on the cliff. She led some of the pitches. The park’s Camp 4 launched the great Yosemite Valley golden age of climbing from the late 1950s through the early 1970s. Steve Roper described it as a pretty anarchic place in his colorful book Camp 4: Recollections of a Yosemite Rockclimber (The Mountaineers, 1994). But now times at Camp 4 are changing, and not necessarily for the better. The National Park Service issued this announcement: Late May through Early September, as part of a pilot program in 2019, campsites are available only by daily lottery, one day in advance, via recreation.gov, beginning May 22 (the first lottery is on May 21) and lasting through September 15 (last lottery is September 14).

Chronology of the Eiger from 1252 to 2013 Compiled by Daniel Anker and Rainer Rettner ©Daniel Anker: Eiger – die vertikale Arena. AS Verlag, Zürich 2008, 4. Auflage; Eiger-Archiv Rainer Rettner 1252 A document in Latin concerning a property sale by Ita von Wädiswyl to Interlaken Abbey refers to an area of land thus: “ad montem qui nominatur Egere”, translated as “to the mountain named Eiger”. After the Bietschhorn, the Eiger is the second summit in the Swiss Alps with a recorded name. 1850 “The northern drop of the Eiger falls in its entire expanse terribly steep to the valley, it is so to speak a single giant cliff face which one gazes at in horror and admiration. Only in places, such as Mittellegi, in the fissures of the upper summit mass and the couloirs and cavities where the smooth rock is ruptured more deeply, does the eternal snow cling.” Gottlieb Studer, a district governor by profession and a mountaineer, landscape draughtsman and Alpine writer by passion, describes the North Face of the Eiger for the first time in writing in his volume Das Panorama von Bern . 1858 11 August: Irishman and occasional climber Charles Barrington makes the first ascent of the Eiger (3970 m) over the west flank with Grindelwald mountain guides Christian Almer and Peter Bohren. 1861 27/28 July: Second ascent of the Eiger by Viennese alpinist Sigismund Porges and his local guides Christian Michel, Hans and Peter Baumann. His first attempt with guides in 1857 was unsuccessful; he did however in the same year become the first to ascend the Mönch.
