Subscriptions for 2014 become due on January 1 st 2014 and renewal forms are being sent to members during December. Please take some time to check your personal details and advise any changes to the Membership Secretary. Please let the Membership Secretary know of any changes.

Prompt payment of your subscription by January 7 th will ensure you continue to receive the club newsletter and remain eligible to represent the club in competition. If you do not currently pay your subscription by standing order, please consider joining the many members who already do. A standing order form is attached to the renewal form.

Once again members are asked to consider whether they still require a PRINTED copy of the monthly newsletter. Many members now choose to receive the newsletter by email for the convenience and the superior picture quality. If you do need a paper copy posted to you, please tick the box on the renewal form and return it to me.

Finally, thank you to those members who have paid their subs early. Your renewal form will be sent in early January and will include a new standing order mandate to bring future payments into line with the new subscription year.

Mid Lancs Cross Country League Towneley Park, Burnley 26th October Cross country is good for you! Our club was based on it, as were the other clubs around. Foster, Coe and Cram still swear by it. Indeed Cram ran at Towneley in the Northern and finished 9th. A year later he won at Thirsk Race Course. We remember the Clitheroe 10 when 257 beat the hour. Mm! How many of us can do that distance under the hour now?

So to Towneley, the night after the thunderstorm. The course wasn't too bad thanks to the drains put in by the Towneley family and kept in good condition by the council.

We had 800 runners, plus the coaches, parents supporters, the public and dogs and a horse, so we needed marshalling for their safety. Thanks are due to Pete Booth, Paul Archer, Jim Hickie, Jill and Dave Scott, Martin Brady, Sue Allen, Harry Manning, Val Lawson, Tina Lewis, Dug McCallum and Bobs Russell and Hirst. We are also grateful for the help from Rossendale AC and Pendle AC I will be most willing to help someone else to organise these races next year. I think it is important as a club that we do so. Richard Lawson

After organising over 20 Mid Lancs races at Towneley, over several different courses, Richard Lawson has decided that this October would be his last one. On behalf of the club and the literally hundreds of runners - over 800 this year - I would like to thank him and Valerie for all their hard work over the years. Spending Saturday night rolling up reels of tape whilst watching 'Strictly', making over 200 course flags and having an estate car big enough to carry the huge amount of 'stuff' down to Towneley are just some of the more light-hearted tasks involved!

I believe that someone has volunteered to take over the organising. If this person also does 20 meetings then I shall be 90 and probably not able to complete the course!!

El Presidente

Words of Wisdom By resident guru Dave Scott

All that a man can do is to beat the people who are around at the same time that he is. He cannot win from those who came before, anymore than he can from those who come afterwards.

BOOTHY’S BIT Thanks to all the members who contacted me with suggestions on how to overcome my Achilles injury. A month down the line, there has been gradual improvement but I’m still unable to run for any length of time. Another trip to the doctor, I fear.

Mid Lancs XC Fixture As you may have seen on p 4, the Mid Lancs XC fixture on 26th October was the last to be organised by Richard Lawson. If any member is keen to take up the mantle of race organiser, please contact Mike Wallis or any member of the committee. I would like to add my own thanks to Richard (& Val & ‘team’) for all their work over the last 20 years+.

Our main charity fund raising event is the Club Presentation Evening which will take place on 1st February 2014 at Burnley FC’s 1882 Lounge. TROPHIES Were YOU good enough to win a trophy at last February’s Celebration Evening? If you were, I’m sorry it’s time to hand it back.

Preparations are well advanced for this year’s Celebration Evening and we need to have the trophies returned (CLEAN), so that they can be collat- ed and inscribed in good time.

PLEASE Return your trophy to the Trophy Custodian: Harry Manning, or via a Committee member AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

THANK YOU

My apologies go to all readers that this month’s Harrier is a bit late. I delayed the copy going to the printers so that I could report on two major events that the club hosted on Saturday 23rd November. First, at 10.30am was the TOUR OF PENDLE The car park was already full and Barley Village Hall was thronged with runners when I arrived at 9.00am to help Kieran and team at registration for the race. The following hour was really hectic as almost 440 runners, including 37 from Clayton, registered for this year’s race. Each runner received a commemorative T shirt and was issued with a set of 12 tags, one tag to be handed in at each checkpoint. Key marshals were briefed and had short wave radios for emergency contact. After I’d helped with the kit check, I watched the mass start at 10.30, (I promised not to mention that 2 runners: Michael Toman and Richard Briscoe ran through the start area a few minutes late because they had forgotten their tags—so I won’t.) I then walked up to CP4 to check numbers as the runners started the ’second lap’ of the race. Despite my pre-printed grid, this proved quite a challenge at peak times, although a few runners were ’teamed up’ and came through the CP in numerical order - much appreciated. I was struck by the patience and good humour of the runners as many had to queue to pass through the gate. At this stage, there was a leading group of 3: Matthew Roberts (Eryri), Tim Ellis (Calder Valley) and Ian Holmes (Bingley), closely followed by a group that contained Clayton’s Spencer Riley and Paul Thompson. As soon as the final runners had passed though CP4, I reversed the course towards the trig point. All too soon, the 3 leaders were in view, flying across the moor, with Matthew Roberts ‘sitting in’ looking very comfortable. [continued on p20] 7

Covering Old Ground

25 years ago (December 1988) • The Mid-Lancs Cross Country at Towneley Park, promoted by Clayton (Richard Lawson) was to take place on Saturday 17 th December. • 'Blackfoot' had been critical of 'Silverfox' leading runs over 'off-road' (no torches) on the dark winter nights. Don Barton stepped in, saying “....No member of this club is compelled to run anywhere against their wishes. No torches are used on Tuesday evening runs....Do not imply that ankle injuries are caused by these runs....Do not sign for “dozens of irate runners” without....authority....” • Wendy Dodds and her partner (Sue Walsh of Eryril) were first Ladies’ team in the Karrimor Elite - 79 th overall. Vanessa (Brindle) and Tony Peacock were 1 st Mixed team in the A Class. • In the Preston 10 mile – Carol Walkington (Campbell) was third Lady and first Vet – Clayton the winning team with Tina Lewis and Alison Lee (Martin) the other counters. Clayton ladies also achieved third team in the MLXC at Witton (Carol, Linda Lord and Tina). In the results:- Ian Hodgson Relay: 12 th B team; 23 rd C team; 31 st Ladies A team; 37 th A team; 48 th Ladies B. 20 years ago (December 1993) • The Burnley Express reported on the “Mean theft of adapted bike”. “Mean thieves have stolen the bike of one of Burnley's best-known sportsmen.” Mark Brown wakened to find his bike had been stolen from his home. The bike had been modified for Mark to use with his remaining right arm. Mark used the bike for going to work at Calderstone's Hospital in Whalley. Along with the bike were Mark's (expensive) fell shoes. In the results:- Heritage Rollercoaster Half Marathon:1st LV55 Kitty Garnett (218 th ) 118.08 MLXC Barrow: 1st V50 Dave Scott (83 rd ) 43.03

15 years ago (December 1998) • Steve Breckell, Newsletter Editor, had received a phone call from Club member Eric Doorbar about days gone by – Steve asked Eric to send some details so they could be printed in the next month's edition. Eric, born 1932, joined Clayton-le-Moors Harriers in 1946. Eric joined the club through the friendship of his father with a man called Arnold Wilkinson, a well-known fell runner in his time. Eric had enjoyed success at cross country whilst at Accrington Grammar School. Training was Wednesday evenings from and Saturdays: cross country routes from various Working Men's Clubs and Pubs. Eric said the highlights of the Cross Country season were the East Lancs., Northern and English Champs. In 1951 the club came second in the East Lancs. Junior Champs. And in the previous year Eric (as a Youth) came 36 th in the 3 mile English Champs – followed by Donald O'Rourke in 75 th . Eric continued with his love of running through his time in the Army and Oxford University – the latter having an unbelievable memory of being a steward when Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile. In the same era Eric broke the Freshman's two mile record, previously held by Chris Chataway. Since this time Eric has moved around the country quite a lot but still keeps in touch with his roots. • Steve Breckell wrote about the 10 th British Fell and Hill Running Vets Relay. Apparently the team was referred to as a 'scratch team' with three over 50's and one heading that way, giving a combined age of 280 years. Pete McWade had been on night shifts all week, Brian Horrocks had an ankle injury, and Steve had been struggling with training because of knee problems. Other members of the team were Simon Clarke, John Nuttall, and Kieran Carr. Steve was impressed that they managed 7 th (and 38 th overall out of 112 teams). Steve said – Scratch Team??? we had two former British Vets Champs and a current Runner-up British Champ and English Champ not to mention a former England International and all six members of the team still winning vets races. “Scratch team? Scratch my Arse!” ( Steve's words not mine!) In the results:- Blackburn 10K: 1st V40 Alan Clarkson (7 th ) 35.23; 1st LV45 Vanessa Peacock (42 nd ) 39.51 MLXC Blackburn: 1st Mark Aspinall 38.19 Clayton's winning teams – A, B and Vets; Ladies 3 rd team. MLXC Wilsons: winning teams – A, B, Vets, V50's, Ladies, Ladies Vets.

Leg 3 Willy Sullivan/Paul Thompson caught the vets Pete McWade/ Geoff Gough finishing almost on a par. Andy Orr/Sean Clare and vets Steve Whitaker/Colin Urmston set off. Andy and Sean pulled two minutes out of the vets finishing in 6 th overall. In the British Champs FRA Relay the Seniors finished 7 th overall. A Team: Mark Brown 13th, Garry Wilkinson/ Simon Thompson 9 th , Tim Laney/Paul Thompson 8th, Andy Stubbs 7 th – two minutes ahead of the Vets: Mark Aspinall 16 th , Steve Whitaker/Colin Urmston, Mike Wallis/Geoff Gough – pulled back 5 minutes on A team to level, Ian Greenwood 2mins adrift of Andy, but ahead of Horwich Vets. 5 years ago (December 2008 ) • This Month's profile was about Paul Shackleton. Paul joined the club in 1992 just before leaving Burnley for Loughborough University. He started running in 1984 and joined Burnley AC in 1986. Whilst at Uni Paul ran for the students on the track – 5K, 3K Steeplechase, and XC. Snorkelling In Wales – British Fell Relays 2013

Sunday 20 th October saw the 25 th running of the British Fell Relays in Llanberis (Snowdon), Wales. The conditions were interesting with strong winds and heavy showers; maybe a snorkel & flippers should have been a mandatory part of the kit check! Clayton Harriers were out in force with 4 teams entered: A, V40, V50 & Ladies and in total over 200 teams entered.

Leg 1: The relay got underway with a mass start and covered 7.4km and over 350m of climbing through a quarry and up onto Cein-du and back. The A team led by Tom Brewster and V40 team led by Paul Shackleton had a real tussle throughout this leg, changing positions 4/5 times as the terrain changed, Tom getting the better of his more experienced counterpart on the climbs but Shack coming strong on the descent and rough terrain. The leg eventually finished in a sprint finish along the last 200metres of tarmac with Tom Brewster, on the promise of a double meal, finishing seconds in front of Shack to bring the A team home in 41 st with Shack in 42 nd (9 th V40). John Wilcock on his relay debut ran really well for the V50s finishing as 4 th V50. The ladies, led off by Sue Burns, finished in 16 th (out of nearly 40 teams).

Leg 2: The first of the pairs’ legs led the teams over 14km and 1000m of terrain climbing onto Moel Cynghorion & Moel Eilio before descending back into the event field. All the teams found this leg tough, being battered by the elements. After Leg 1 the Clayton A & V40s set off as a quartet, the A team of Matt Perry & Dave Walker getting the better of ‘the old boys’ Paul Thompson & Garry Wilkinson, bringing the team back in 27 th ; the vets not far behind finishing still as 9th V40 and only running 1 min slower than the ‘young ‘uns’. The V50s, led by Ste Whittaker & Martin Terry, had a good run finishing in 5 th in the V50 category. The ladies, led by Capt.Jean Brown & Anna Kelly finished the leg in 17 th . Leg 3: The dreaded navigation leg run in pairs. On this leg runners set off not knowing the route, given a map with checkpoints marked on just as you’re tagged by the Leg 2 runners! This means you can’t pre plan or recce the course in any way. The ‘A’ team were led by Capt. Motley & Dave Bagot (who stepped into the team on 48hr notice) and you’ll be surprised to hear that they didn’t get lost and managed to run the leg quicker than both V40 & V50 teams, which included the experienced navigators Hardiman & Wallis. The ‘A’ team improved their position into 23 rd . The V40’s Neil Hardiman & Paul Hesketh finished the leg with the team in 9 th V40 and Mike Wallis & Geoff Gough finishing in 6 th V50 position. The Ladies, with Katy Thompson & Kath Wallis finished the leg with the team in 20 th .

Leg 4: A really tough leg leading the runners over 8.5k and 600m of climbing up and down Moel Eilio. Spencer Riley had a stormer on this leg after returning from injury in May (broken foot), bringing the Clayton ‘A’ team back home to finish the relay in 19 th . The V40’s led by Sean Clare came home finishing as 13 th V40 team and Dave Naughton ran really well bringing the 50’s home in 6 th . The ladies 14 with Wendy Dodds running the last leg, finished the day in 22 nd place, which was a fantastic result against much younger teams in the category.

Again my thanks goes to all the runners that ran for Team Clayton. This is what club running is all about and I’m already looking forward to se- lecting the teams for the Calderdale Relay in May.

Dave Motley

Spencer Riley makes waves as he brings the A team home.

CLAYTON JUNIORS’ TRAINING Thursday Training; Spirit of Sport, 6.00-7.00. This is an indoor circuit session to improve speed and agility. Cost £2 Saturday Training; 08.45 at Towneley Park for endurance running and/or Parkrun. Please bring clothing that is suitable for the weather and running conditions. Age Limits for Training Sessions; There's no minimum age limit to be a junior member of Clayton Harriers (although the minimum age to compete in a Fell race is six years on race day) however we have decided to apply a minimum age to attend the coached training sessions. Juniors must be in school year 5 or above. This applies only to new recruits not to those already attending. The main reason for this change is that most juniors below this age limit struggle to maintain focus during structured coaching (especially endurance work) and gain little from the session. We appreciate that there are exceptions to this however, they are fairly rare. EMAIL ADDRESS FOR JUNIORS: [email protected]

BOOTHY’S BIT MORE…….. TOUR OF PENDLE (continued) Appearances didn’t deceive. Matthew gradually pulled away on the run-in past the reservoirs, establishing a winning margin of 12 seconds over Ian with Tim 38secs further back. Spencer finished a fantastic 7th in 2:23:42 – only 6 months after breaking his ankle – quite a recovery! Another superb run by Jasmin Paris Carnethy) saw her come in as the clear winner of the ladies, while Fell Captain, Dave Motley, was the second Clayton home in 2:37:01. Unfortunately, Paul Thompson was forced to drop out. At the prize giving, Spencer picked up his prize for 7th in the open category. Katy Thompson was first LV60, Jean Brown 3rd LV45. The ladies also took second team (Jean Brown, Avril Duckworth and Barbara Savage). Well done to Avril in her first long fell race – not an easy one for sure! A number of runners had personal bests on the day – congratulations to all of them. A final well done goes to Kieran and his small army of helpers (mainly Clayton members) who ensured that everything proceeded well, and without mishap, on the day.

[Kieran’s report and full Clayton results are on p31.]

See p23 for my report on the second prestigious event of the day: the FRA Annual Presentation Dinner & Dance.

FRA Annual Presentation Dinner & Dance Mytton Fold Hotel In the evening following the Tour, 200 FRA members assembled at the Mytton Fold for their end-of-year celebration and prize-giving. When Marie & I had been at the 2011 event, hosted by Calder Valley, we had decided that Clayton should offer to host the function at a future date. Since that occasion, Marie has worked tirelessly to organise the venue, food and entertainment, liaising with the FRA at every stage. It is largely down to her that the event ran very smoothly and those who attended had a most enjoyable time. Chairman Jim, resplendent in suit and multi-coloured bow tie, welcomed our guests before we tucked into a three course meal. El Presidente took a major role in the presentation of the prizes to the individual and team award winners from the English and British Fell Running Championships, plus the Lakeland Classics Series. Clayton trophy winners were: Linda Lord first LV60 in the English Champs, Linda also collected Wendy Dodds’ medals: first LV60 and 2nd LV55. (Wendy is in Nepal as Doctor for the Everest marathon so wasn’t able to attend). When it came to the men, Keiran Carr won medal for 3rd vet 65, again in the English Championships. Jean Brown picked up a commemorative mug for 3rd lady and 2nd LV40 in the Lakeland Classics. After the presentation, the excellent Picasso Brothers provided a wide range of the music for us to dance to until the early hours. One day; two very successful and enjoyable events hosted by the club. Well done & thank you to all concerned!

Tour of Pendle 23/11/13 AL 17m, 4800’

My thanks to all the marshals on the hill and at the start and finish and congratulations to all prize winners. W e had another brilliant sunny day but it was cold in the shade and at the start. The sweepers tell me they had to do a litter pick as they followed the race. The main thing they picked up was empty gel tubes and the tops off them. They even found a couple protruding from under stones, they do not rot and will not go away, please think about bringing them back with you off the course. I know they're sticky but shove them down your vest and bring them back with you. Surely you wash your gear when you get home. The marshals will take litter off you as well. The great weather led to faster times; the winners time was the 14th fastest ever. Well done Matthew. He was pushed all the way by Ian and Tim. Ian's time was the 2nd fastest time for a vet and the fastest ever for a vet45. Jasmin's, 3rd fastest ever ladies’ time. Next year's race will be on the 15 November 2014 and held under the new FRA Safety Requirements. I would advise everybody to read them. Hope you had a safe journey home and I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Deputy Ladies’ Road & Trail Captain Candice Heys, our Ladies’ Road and Trail Captain, is recovering following a successful knee operation, and expects that it will be some months before she can return to running and racing. To support Candice in her role, the commit- tee has appointed Rebecca Rawcliffe as Deputy Ladies’ Road and Trail Cap- tain. Rebecca joined Clayton in February this year and is a familiar face at John Roche’s Tuesday and Thursday training sessions. Candice and Rebecca will work together to ensure that our Ladies put up a good performance at the upcoming Witton Park Trail Relays on 2nd February, and also at the Northern Six Stage in Manchester on 15th March.
