Boothy’s Bit

Jack Betney I received news of Jack’s death just before the April Newsletter was printed. Richard Lawson has written about his memories of Jack (p4) and has sent in a newspaper cutting about a charity fund-raising trip that Jack undertook in the 70s (p6). Andy O’Sullivan has organised a Memorial Race for Jack on 23rd May starting from the Oxford Pub, Whitworth Road, Rochdale. The race will raise funds for Mollie Campbell, a local basketball player, who is aiming for Olympic Games selection. It would be great to see a huge number of CleM members there to honour Jack’s memory and support a worthy cause. Full details on UK Results website: http://www.ukresults.net/12may.html#betney.

Honour for Ron Hill Borough Council is to recognise Ron Hill’s immense contribution to athletics by bestowing on him the Honour of the Freedom of the Borough of Hyndburn. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 10th July in the Hyndburn Council Chamber. It is hoped that the formal proceedings will be followed by a run or race (perhaps around the Coppice), but details have yet to be confirmed.

Run of the Month—Sue Allen For the second year in succession, the March Run of the Month award has gone to Sue Allen—for the same reason: completion of all the season’s cross country fixtures. Sue wouldn’t claim to be the club’s best runner, but she is Clayton Harriers through and through. The Run of the Month judges hope that she will serve as an inspiration to other club members to represent the club at cross country (or on the road or fells, if you prefer). If Sue can do it, so can you!

Mid Lancs Cross Country League Last week, I received good news from Richard Lawson who attended the MLXC League Presentation. The M60 team were gold medallists in their category. We had thought that we were runners-up to Southport Waterloo, but they had counted only 3 races, Well done to all the M60 runners who represented the club in MLXC League this season.

April Newsletter—Photo Competition Last month’s cover photograph was taken by Paul Healey on an X Team excursion from . Entitled ‘In the Picture’, the giant picture frame is an exhibit on the Irwell Sculpture Trail, a 30 mile route, featuring over 70 public works of art, that runs from to Salford Quays. If you would like to visit, ‘In the Picture’ is located next to the R Irwell at Chatterton, Nr (SD793189), close to the E Lancs Railway. Thanks to Steve Breckell, who thought that Islay was thinking ‘Bow wow wow wow’. [Ho ho ho, ho Steve]. Islay tells me that the correct answer was: ’Pete must have shrunk in the wash. He was much taller than Martin last week.’ 3

Jack Betney 1933 - 2012

I have just returned from the funeral of Jack Betney where we joined his wife, Pat, and their family in paying our last respects to a man who was in many ways remarkable, and whose running career was threatened on more than one occasion.

Born in June 1933 in Bolton, Jack had various jobs in engineering and equestrianism in the North West and Glasgow before settling into Youth Work in East Lancs. It was his involvement with horses that led to an accident to his cruciate ligaments, which were severely damaged. He was told he would never run again. Jack refused to accept this and, with great determination, he managed to continue a career in all branches of athletics achieving a lot of success along the way.

Jack joined Clayton in 1968. In 1970 he was due to take part in the inaugural Pennine Way Relay attempt but was injured shortly before the day. Over a decade later, he planned second and third attempts, the second failing in atrocious weather on The Cheviot.

Jack's career was threatened again when he was the victim in a near-fatal road accident near Ribchester, when an oncoming lorry driver was blinded by the sun. The medics said he would never run again, but they were wrong. We all admired his struggle to regain fitness. Jack had set himself various challenges. He ran the Rossendale Way and the Calderdale Way. He attempted the Pennine Way up and down but was unsuccessful in this. With the Northern Vets AC and Clayton, he organised the National Vets Cross Country Championships in and competed on the track at European level. He organised the vets Bowley races and the summer 10Ks in Clitheroe. He was Honorary Chairman and then President of the Northern Vets Assn.

Jack had strong ideas on how things should be done. He was both a generous and a feisty man. I for one will miss our long phone conversations and his help. Our thoughts are with Pat and the family

Jack Betney, Pat & ‘Duo’

Jack had a life-long passion for cars and motoring. In the ‘70s he owned a vintage Austin Big Seven saloon, named ’Duo’ (after the number plate). The photo (taken from the , supplied by Richard Lawson), shows Jack & Pat just before they set off from Clatterbridge Hospital on Merseyside on a nine- day, 3050 mile ’grand tour’ to raise funds for cancer charities in memory of a friend and colleague, Jim Hewitt, who had died from the disease.

Calling all Witches!

Would any CleM ladies be interested in following the trail of the condemned Lancashire witches as they went to their fate to Lancaster Castle from Pendle in 1612? This year is the 400 th anniversary of the arrest, trial and hanging of these unfortunate women, and to commemorate the event, I would like to organise a relay from Pendle to Lancaster. As yet, this is only the germ of an idea, and nothing is set in stone, but the route would be approximately Barrowford Heritage Centre, Barley, Downham, Grindleton, Waddington Fell, Dunsop Bridge, over the Bowland Fells to Quernmore, & Lancaster, using off-road footpaths, tracks and trails. The route would be split into roughly 7 or 8 legs, of varying length from 4 to 12 miles. I have no particular date in mind, but the women were hanged on 20 th August, so a possible date would be Sunday 19 th August, (avoiding Saturday 18 th which is Weasdale Horseshoe, English Champs race), but any other date more suitable to those interested would be considered. The relay wouldn’t be a race, so speed isn’t important, just getting the black cat and broomstick (miniature versions) from East Lancs to Lancaster, so don’t worry if you’re the slowest of the slow, or have raced at Weasdale the day before and need an easy few miles to loosen up; everyone is welcome. It’s many years (1982) since the ladies’ Pennine Way relay, and since then we’ve had Coast to Coast, Bob Graham, Pendle Way and other relays but none recently. So ladies, let’s take the initiative and make this a day to remember.

If you’re interested, give me a call asap on 01282771907, or email [email protected] so we can meet, determine a date and sort out details.

Coledade Horsehoe* British & English Fell Championship 14 th April *[according to the complimentary Buff given to each competitor!] As we approached Braithwaite from Keswick, the grey curtain obscuring Skiddaw parted momentarily to reveal a sprinkling of snow on the upper slopes. Great! Feeling sorry for the aged runners in the car (Jack Holt & yours truly), Dark Peak’s Dave Taylor guided us into pole position in the car park, shortening our walk to the start at Braithwaite Lodge. Examining the route from the start field, we could see patches of snow on the ridges of Grizedale Pike, Crag Hill and Sail, but the cloud base was rising and the showers appeared to be quite isolated.

Come race time, the girls were given a 15 minute start to minimise the possibility of a queue on the steps, where the route leaves the road at the start of Whinlatter Pass. After a short warm up, it was our turn. Knowing a quick start was needed, I went as hard as I could up the field, but was jelly- legged charging down the lane into the village. The anticipated ‘roadblock’ on the steps was not too bad and a couple of strategically placed bales eased our passage over the stile at the top of the steep climb. From there, it’s a long slog up Grizedale. I’d got over my early race ‘wobble’ and got my head down. I could see two of my V60 rivals – Jack & Mike Walsh (Kendal), but I suspected that the others, Ben Grant and Rob Taylor, were away and gone.

Working hard on the climb I was passing runners, but making no impression on Jack & Mike, who were still about 30 seconds ahead. Over the summit and onto the tricky traverse to Coledale Hause, with no navigation problems, given the clear air and large number of runners. The descent to the Hause is superb – steep & grassy – just my sort of running and a few more places were gained before the steep scramble up Crag Hill. A quick glance ahead told me that I still had made no impression on my fellow wrinklies. After ten minutes of hands and feet, the slope relented and I was able to manage a slow stumble to the trig, where I overtook Dr Barbara in her trademark pink compression socks.

Remembering that the best line off the top was to the right, I veered off, spying, to my surprise, Jack and Mike just below. A ‘controlled’ descent got me onto Mike’s shoulder at the col. ‘Just stick with him on the climb up Sail’, thought I. Fat chance. Mike was like the proverbial rat up a pipe, but the climb was mercifully short and we were soon over the top, where the fantastic view over the valley towards Skiddaw opened up. No time to stop and admire. The steep, heathery slope needed all my concentration as I quickly overhauled Mike and, surprisingly, just as quickly caught Jack. I didn’t hesitate to over- take, as I knew there was a difficult narrow section just below and I would need a cushion for the final climb up Barrow.

14

On to the narrow, technical descent - and problems. Slower female runners blocked my way. Despite my impatience to overtake, I had some sympathy for the ladies: they were in a race, too, but were very aware that they were holding up the men. A couple of heart-stopping manoeuvres over the intimidating drop off saw me pass a couple, before we hit the wider, stony path under Oughterside, where another target came into view: Mr Wigwam, running in a black top, so not seen previously. Gradually, I reeled Ivan in and was right behind him at the start of the Barrow climb. Ivan ran the climb strongly and, with a mix of run/walk, I managed to hang on, passing the trig about 10 metres behind.

Off Barrow summit, the finish is, literally, in sight. Suspecting that Jack wouldn’t be far behind I charged off down the slope – another lovely, grassy descent, with few technical bits. I soon passed Ivan and, ignoring the pain from my right heel (a 50p size blister, it turned out), legged it down the final stretch, through the farm yard and to the finish. Ivan had hung on to me and was a couple of seconds behind, with Jack about a minute behind and Mike another minute after him. As I thought, Ben and Rob were already home, Rob having pipped Ben on the run in. [continued overleaf]

THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE 9-10th JUNE 2012

A team of young, energetic, good looking and talented volunteers, and Clayton Harrier Mark Wightman, are taking on the challenge of summiting the 3 highest peaks of , Scotland and Wales in less than 24 hours. As most of you will know, the plan is to climb Ben Nevis (4,409ft) first, then Scafell Pike (3,206ft), and finally Snowdon (3,560ft).

All members of the team, called ”Are We There Yet?” are work colleagues at Whittle Eastern Europe Logistics in Clitheroe.

And why are we doing it? To raise money for Action Medical Research, the leading UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of babies and children, giving them a better start in life and stopping suffering. As you can see on the website, www.action.org.uk , over the last 60 years the charity has been instrumental in numerous successful breakthroughs, but because it receives no government funding, it has to rely entirely on donations.

Our target is to raise £2000 and any of you kind souls wishing to sponsor us can do so on the following link:- www.action.org.uk/sponsor/weell

Many of us take our good health for granted, but some little ones are not so lucky. So please give generously: your kindness can do so much!

Thanking you in advance for your kind support.

JUNIOR RUNNER OF THE MONTH MARCH GEORGE PIER For an excellent performance in his first race in a Clayton vest!

MARION’S MESSAGE:

Many of you have run your first race in the Summer Series. 15 juniors ran at Barley on Saturday, 7th April, some for the first time in a Clayton vest. We had two medal winners in the girls’ U12: Lucy Horrocks won silver and Natalya Irvine won bronze. (Well done to both of you!)

Your next race in the Summer Series will be a trail run (not a hill in sight, which will suit the speed merchants).

You need do only 4 races to count for the Summer Series, but why not do more, if you can? It’s all good training for those legs!

EMAIL ADDRESS FOR JUNIORS:

[email protected]

We operate an email info system, with the latest race news and any last minute changes. If you are a parent and haven't already given me your email then let me know on the new address and I'll put you on the list. It's just for Clayton juniors, don't worry we won't be selling your details to anyone!

Summer Training; The Kids are Coming!!

This year I'll be introducing some of our juniors to the delights of Tuesday evening Fell training. We will be running from the same venues at the same time as the seniors, starting mid April. The aim is partly to introduce the more able runners to more challenging terrain and also to make the work of the junior section more visible to the rest of the membership. For these sessions to be a success we really need your help. Last year we called on all members to consider donating just an hour of their time on one Saturday. To say we were underwhelmed by the response would be an under- statement (but thank you to those that did help out). This year I'm giving all you lucky people a chance to redeem yourselves. If you're planning to attend Tuesday sessions then please give some serious thought to helping out on just one day at least. You won't be required to do any actual coaching, It's just a case of having an extra pair of hands in case the wheels fall off; they haven't yet! I'll put more details on the website closer to the date but feel free to contact me sooner if you have any queries. We'll be covering around four miles or more, but there will be plenty of opportunity to push yourself if you want. The sessions will be properly structured and include those well known delights; Warm Up, Cool Down and Stretching!

These guys and girls are part of Clayton's future, let's make them feel part of our community and give them all the help we can. Andy Armstrong

Racing from the Back – To the Marathon des Sables Phil Hanson

In the late 2007, after spending a decade in weight gyms in the North West I decided to go for a jog on the road from home and 3 miles later returned home feeling pretty chuffed. Twelve months later, walking through Ambleside, now a regular runner, I called into an outdoor shop perused the running kit and bought my first pair of off- road shoes, the Mizuno Wave Harrier and race map called the Three Shires Fell. A few months later with numerous training runs over Winter Hill I entered the race and stood there on a cool September Saturday morning. "Go" and off I went running near the back, under no illusion that I would set a new record, but what unfolded next was not what I was expecting. Near the top of Wetherlam, my heart felt like it was pumping peanut butter and my lungs were running at 14,000 feet, whilst these wily runners start passing me, chatting. At the summit, I stopped for a brief moment and watched other racers disappear in the distance. At Three Shires Stone, sensing cramp, I just couldn't run up any incline. Near to the top of Blisco, about 200 metres away, I sat down, exhausted, with cramp in both legs; there were only a dozen or so now behind me. A marshal appeared and she persuaded me to walk to the summit. Eventually I arrived at the base of Lingmoor at the cattle grid and a couple of spectators gave me some orange juice and the ascent started. Dragging my way up, using the fence and crawling, I pulled myself up to the summit. Walking then trotting, with cramp in my legs, feet, arms, and in places I didn't know you could get it, I finished. Sitting in the tent in the field, I couldn't move. A runner came over and she gave me her pint; I must have looked in a terrible mess. Time completed 3hrs 43m 01s, 10 th from last! I was hooked with Fell running. 2009 kicked off with the Winter Hill race and I entered another 13 Trail & Fell races, such as Coniston, Puma Trail race series, Fairfield, Helvellyn and Caw Fell race. September came and again at the start line of my 15th off-road race of the year, the Three Shires. This time the word wasn't cramp, or at least not much of it, passing over Wetherlam and Blisco, enjoying the moment, up and over Lingmoor, and a finishing time of: 3hrs:01m 03s, I was well pleased. 2010 started off with Winter Hill again, knocking 12 minutes off previous year with a 2hr 09m 18s time, picking off another 5 races Pendle Half Tour, Buttermere Sailbeck, Helvellyn, Coledale, & Coniston, before entering the 24

Great Lakes, this was going to be my toughest to date - 7000 feet of ascent. I started off well, passing over Bowfell and going strong, then suddenly hit a boulder badly and the foot gave in. Thinking I may have broken my foot, as I passed the Check Point at Esk Pike and realising I was losing ground fast, I came to the decision: to pull out. It was the first time I had suffered a failure to complete a race; big disappointment. Six weeks later I tackled the Borrowdale race, not best prepared, as only just recovered from the foot injury, but always willing to have ago, the first Lakeland AL. I discovered that pacing is critical. Heading up Great Gable and down to a slow walk, I had started way too fast and the tank was empty, the legs full of cramp going up Dale Head and I finished in 5h 22m 47s, absolutely shattered. The Three Shires race arrived and feeling good, I ran a perfect race, my third time with a 2h: 46m: 07s, nearly an hour off in 2 years and a stone lighter. The final 2 races of the year, the Langdale, and Pendle Tour passed with success. Whilst at the Langdale I noticed a board about an event called the Lakeland Classic series. Not realising up till then that I had already done 3 of the 6 in the series, I decided to set myself a goal, to run them all in one year, the only ones outstanding were the Wasdale, Ennerdale, and Duddon. This should be a challenge. The winter months passed with a regular 35 to 40 miles per week being done on the roads and the fells. The first race of 2011 was the Teenager with Altitude (TWA), the big brother of the Anniversary Waltz. This turned out to be a really tough run - as hard as Borrowdale. The weather was tough as well and I used the compass on more than one occasion. As the field of competitors was small I spent a lot of the time running alone from Robinson through to Cat Bells finally to arrive back at the village hall for my free pint of local brew (I’m sure there are easier ways to earn a drink). Only 3 runners came in after me, I finished 70 th . The only comfort was that there were about 90 starters. The following month I decided to run the 3 Towers Rivington –– Darwen – Holcombe and back. This was a 33 mile run so was loaded with kit and I set off at 7:00am on the Bank Holiday. Reaching Holcombe Tower nearly to the minute 4 hours later, what was interesting was looking over to Winter Hill in the distance and thinking, it looks real far away. So setting off running, headed over Turton Moors, nice to run a trail that I haven't done since childhood. Up and over Winter Hill I rolled into to the car park after 6hrs 54m of running and walking and 33 miles, dumped my kit and went over to the ice cream van and bought a 99 ice cream and also a chocolate lolly. Pure joy! Ennerdale race arrived and loaded up with kit, a big mistake, carrying more water than a camel and going fairly well until Green Gable, I then started to falter. Again racers started to pass. Pillar came and went and the long descent back started and went on and on and on until the final small climb of Crag Fell 25 caused a serious sense of humour failure. Wasdale arrived and learning from experience of Ennerdale I went lighter and finished 118 out of 140 finishers. I joined CleM in August 2011. As always seeing many runners from this club in the races I entered, I noticed how well they seem to all do. So I decided to join the club, hoping some of their ability could rub on to me. Borrowdale race was entered again and I ran a 35 minutes quicker race with a 4hr 47m finish. What was amazing was that I was slower than the previous year until near the summit of Great Gable. Pacing really paid off. Final two races of the year came: the Three Shires and Langdale. Langdale got my pace, kit and pre-race rest perfect and completed in 2hrs 57m 05s and just sneaked into the top 100 with a 99 th finish and the 6 th CleM in. Lakeland Classics completed. Looking back at the last three years in this sport it has been of pure enjoyment, not just the benefit on a fitness level, but with all the friendly, helpful people I have met. Where to Now? Outside from the Lakeland Classic series the main aim is the Old Counties Tops in May. In 2013 I have an official place in the Marathon des Sables through a charity HOPE for Children; this is a dream race 150 mile Ultra in the Sahara and with the added benefit of raising money for a charity to help children in the world. Where after will my running take me? Going by the last 4 years, it sure will be exciting where ever it takes me. Please see my website for more information on my adventure for HOPE for Children at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving/ Philip Hanson.

[What a great story. Well done, so far & good luck in the Sahara! - Ed]

COMMITTEE NEWS April 2012

14 members, plus Don Barton, were in attendance. The main points of discussion and decisions were: • Don Barton spoke to the meeting on behalf of the Three Peaks Race Association. He wanted it formally noting that as a member of the Association, the club had a formal commitment to marshal a certain section of the race route (Bull Pot to Sell Gill). At present DB and colleagues would continue to do this on behalf of the club, but he wanted the committee to be aware of its responsibility. • Juniors: Marion reported that £430.00 had been raised for Junior starter packs. 13 had been given out, and 30 remained still to be used. Juniors were currently running at a good surplus, raised from the subs charged on training nights, and funding Level 1 and 2 courses for interested volunteers. • ClubMark: Chairman reported on two recent meetings, and thanked Dave, Jean & Marion for their input. JB had produced an action plan based on ClubMark criteria, and was setting up an evidence file. We would need Welfare Co-Ordinators who would need training, plus one of our coaches would need to attend an “Equity Course” to recognise the work required to assist disabled athletes etc. • Val showed three sizes of Junior vests which were now in stock. Long sleeved “vests” can be obtained with our club bands printed on them, but it was agreed we try to sell off the plain shirts before ordering any . • Chairman updated the meeting on the proposed “Park Runs” at Towneley Park. Burnley Council had initially identified a course, but this was deemed unsuitable by himself and J Roche. “Olympic Legacy Funding” was available from the Government and it was thought this might be obtained so that new suitable paths could be put into the park. Hoped to be up and running by May 2012.

Date of Next Meeting Monday 7 th May, 2012, at The Peel Park Accrington, at 7.00pm.

Tuesday Summer Training Venues 2012

There is a change to the format of our summer training sessions for this year. Each Tuesday throughout the summer, John Roche will lead training groups on the trails and roads around Worsthorne. Members who prefer not to run on the fells in April should meet John in Worsthorne Village Square at 6.30pm.

Summer fell training will follow the usual format of group runs from the following venues, at the time stated:

Date Time Venue

1, 8, 15, 22, 29 May 7.00pm Barley Car Park

5, 12, 19, 26 June 7.00pm Village Square, Worsthorne

3, 10, 17, 24, 31 July 7.00pm Calf’s Head Hotel, Worston

7, 14, 21, 28 August 7.00pm Peel Park Hotel, Accrington

4, 11, 18, 25 September 6.30pm Black Hill Car Park, Sabden

All members are welcome to take part in the Tuesday Fell Runs, The usual arrangement is for three groups to run from each venue for between one and two hours, although this can vary according to numbers, weather and what members have done at the weekend.

If you are new to the Club/summer training runs/fell running, please make your- self known to a Committee member or group leader before the run and we will attempt to place you in the most appropriate group.

All members should ensure that they carry some emergency/extra clothing with them on the run: wind (water)-proof top, over trousers, hat and gloves. The weather can change very quickly on the fells. If you, or someone else in the group has an accident, you can very quickly become cold or hypothermic, even on the most pleasant of evenings. It’s also a good idea to carry a drink and some emergency food (sweets, chocolate bar), in case you are out longer than you expect—it has been known for a group leader to get carried away occasionally.

Pendle Fell Race Incorporating Senior and Junior Lancashire Fell Running Championship 7th April 2012 Congratulations to David Bailey, Ken Richardson and their team of helpers (members and non-members of CleM Harriers) who staged a great afternoon’s racing in ideal conditions on last Saturday. Great organisation and team work allowed 284 runners to tackle the 4 ½ mile main race to the trig point and back, after 269 junior runners had competed in 5 age group races at a variety of distances.

Clayton Harriers retained the Lancashire Fell Running Team Championship. With 6 runners (4 male; 2 female) to count for a team, Dave Nuttall (20 th ), Dave Motley 31 st ), Jamie Baldwin (40 th ), Geoff Gough (42 nd ), Linda Bostock and Barbara Savage (30 th & 31 st ladies) claimed the winner’s certificate.

A number of senior members also won individual medals in the Lancashire Championships: Helena Leathley (Gold FU18), Linda Bostock (Silver F50), Jean Rawlinson (Gold F60), Christine Leathley (Silver F60), David Bagot (Bronze MU23), Dave Nuttall (Silver M40), Geoff Gough (Silver M50), Ivan Wigham (Bronze M50), Pete Booth (Gold M60), Ian Robinson (Silver M60).

With nearly 50 runners, the club must have had at least 75 members at the event. Thanks to all who helped, competed or supported (or did all 3!).

BMAF Veterans’ Road Relay Championship, Sutton Park, Birmingham, Saturday, 12th May This very enjoyable event takes place on a 5K course in a traffic-free environment.
