BRITAIN’S FAILING SLAUGHTERHOUSES WHY IT’S TIME TO MAKE INDEPENDENTLY MONITORED CCTV MANDATORY www.animalaid.org.uk INTRODUCTION 4,000 0 SERIOUS BREACHES slaughterhouses SLAUGHTERHOUSES OF ANIMAL filmed were IN FULL COMPLIANCE WELFARE LAW breaking the law WHEN AUDITED More than 4,000 serious breaches of animal welfare laws in British slaughterhouses were reported by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in the two years to August 2016.1 The regulator’s audit showed that not one UK slaughterhouse was in full compliance when the data was analysed in June 2016.2 Yet together, these are just a small sample of the breaches that actually occur inside Britain’s slaughterhouses. We know this because Animal Aid and Hillside Animal Sanctuary have placed fly-on- the-wall cameras inside 15 English slaughterhouses and found how workers behave when they think they are not being watched. Fourteen of the slaughterhouses were breaking animal welfare laws. From small family-run abattoirs to multi-plant Some of these slaughterhouses had installed CCTV, companies, all across the country, and in relation to which shows that the cameras alone do not deter all species, slaughterhouse workers break the law. law-breaking, and that unless the footage is properly Their abuses are both serious and widespread, and monitored, Food Business Operators (FBOs) do are hidden from the regulators. not detect – or do not report – these breaches. It is unknown whether FBOs fail to monitor their When being secretly filmed, workers punched and cameras properly or they monitor them and choose kicked animals in the head; burned them with not to report the abuse.

Variations in supplier relations operating within voluntary groups; historical perspectives on relationships and social justice in the independent retail sector . Keith Jackson, Doctoral Candidate, University of Cumbria Professor Helen Woodruffe-Burton, Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University Abstract The convenience store sector evolved from the variety of small retailers operating in the 1950’s and is still dominated (in store numbers) by SMEs operating smaller stores (usually smaller than 3,000 sq ft.); trading extended hours; with a base around confectionary, tobacco and news (CTN) and off licence. In the 1980s as more independent retailers adopted the new convenience format the convenience sector spread geographically to fill the increasing demand for local stores with extended hours. Once geographic saturation was reached the main independent supply chains within the convenience sector adopted either a broadly coordinated embedded network through voluntary symbol groups or a broadly cooperative supply chain through cash and carries and delivered wholesalers. Various writers have argued that networking and the building of social capital (as in the voluntary symbol groups) is vital for SME growth whilst Jack and Anderson (2002) have demonstrated that entrepreneurs embedding themselves within a network may be sacrificing their entrepreneurial capabilities. Around 2000, the major retail multiples and the COOP entered the convenience sector. By using their extensive knowledge of Supply Chain Management (SCM) they were able to gain commercial advantage over the existing supply chains which focused these chains on the need for economic efficiency. This meant that the businesses within the voluntary groups had to choose between the mechanisms highlighted by Payan (2000) of economic efficiency with increased dependence on the centre and the mechanisms of social justice within the group that allowed independent actions within the group.

Neil Ewins. Copy of paper to be delivered at Parsons, The New School of Design, New York on 23rd April 2013, for their 22nd Annual Parsons/Cooper-Hewitt symposium on the Decorative Arts and Design. The Presentation of this paper will be accompanied by Powerpoint imagery. Conference theme ‘Mobility and Design’. Sub-categories of Conference: Globalization and the mobility of cultural products. Paper title: UK ceramic manufacturing strategies, marketing and design, in response to globalization c1990-2010. Since the 1990s, ceramic exports from the Far East have surged, and UK ceramic brands have increasingly utilized cheap labour abroad, known as outsourcing. Much of the more recent behaviour of the UK ceramic industry is a reflection of globalization. Western industries have been described increasingly as ‘post Fordist’ (Amin (ed), 1994), and to many writers the impact of globalization creates deterritorialization (King (ed), 1991, p.6; Tomlinson, 1999, p.106-49). Taking their cue from Baudrillard, Lash and Urry’s analysis of ‘global sociology’ argued that ‘Objects are emptied out both of meaning (and are postmodern) and material content (and are thus post-industrial)’.
