Copy deadline for the January issue: Monday, 16th December 2 ATTENTION Subscriptions 2014 Subscriptions for 2014 become due on January 1 st 2014 and renewal forms are being sent to members during December. Please take some time to check your personal details and advise any changes to the Membership Secretary. The club is updating information on whether members are, or wish to; volunteer their services to the club, (i.e. as race marshals) as well as the running disciplines members currently participate in – including Trail running. Please let the Membership Secretary know of any changes. Prompt payment of your subscription by January 7 th will ensure you continue to receive the club newsletter and remain eligible to represent the club in competition. If you do not currently pay your subscription by standing order, please consider joining the many members who already do. A standing order form is attached to the renewal form. Once again members are asked to consider whether they still require a PRINTED copy of the monthly newsletter. Many members now choose to receive the newsletter by email for the convenience and the superior picture quality. If you do need a paper copy posted to you, please tick the box on the renewal form and return it to me. Finally, thank you to those members who have paid their subs early. Your renewal form will be sent in early January and will include a new standing order mandate to bring future payments into line with the new subscription year. As always I am happy to answer any questions – my contact details are on the committee page of the website and in the newsletter. Mike Eddleston 3 Mid Lancs Cross Country League Towneley Park, Burnley 26th October Cross country is good for you! Our club was based on it, as were the other clubs around. Foster, Coe and Cram still swear by it. Indeed Cram ran at Towneley in the Northern and finished 9th. A year later he won at Thirsk Race Course. We remember the Clitheroe 10 when 257 beat the hour. Mm! How many of us can do that distance under the hour now? So to Towneley, the night after the thunderstorm. The course wasn't too bad thanks to the drains put in by the Towneley family and kept in good condition by the council. We had 800 runners, plus the coaches, parents supporters, the public and dogs and a horse, so we needed marshalling for their safety. Thanks are due to Pete Booth, Paul Archer, Jim Hickie, Jill and Dave Scott, Martin Brady, Sue Allen, Harry Manning, Val Lawson, Tina Lewis, Dug McCallum and Bobs Russell and Hirst. We are also grateful for the help from Rossendale AC and Pendle AC I will be most willing to help someone else to organise these races next year. I think it is important as a club that we do so. Richard Lawson After organising over 20 Mid Lancs races at Towneley, over several different courses, Richard Lawson has decided that this October would be his last one. On behalf of the club and the literally hundreds of runners - over 800 this year - I would like to thank him and Valerie for all their hard work over the years. Spending Saturday night rolling up reels of tape whilst watching 'Strictly', making over 200 course flags and having an estate car big enough to carry the huge amount of 'stuff' down to Towneley are just some of the more light-hearted tasks involved! I believe that someone has volunteered to take over the organising. If this person also does 20 meetings then I shall be 90 and probably not able to complete the course!! El Presidente Words of Wisdom By resident guru Dave Scott All that a man can do is to beat the people who are around at the same time that he is. He cannot win from those who came before, anymore than he can from those who come afterwards. 4 CLAYTON-LE-MOORS HARRIERS OFFICIALS 2013-14 President Dave Scott Tel: 01282 693867 Email: dscott007[at]btinternet.com Chairman James Hickie Tel: 01254 246658 Email: chair[at]claytonlemoors.org.uk Secretary Mike Wallis Tel: 01254 822874 Email: secretary[at]claytonlemoors.org.uk Treasurer & Mike Eddleston, 1 Bridge Croft, Clayton-le-Moors, Membership Accrington, BB5 5XP Secretary Tel: 01254 390757 or 07951 424780 Email: treasurer[at]claytonlemoors.org.uk Media Manager Wayne McIntosh Tel: 07986 244176 Email: media[at]claytonlemoors.org.uk Social Secretary Anne Marie Greenwood Tel: 01254 237485 mgreen8[at]hallmark-uk.com Junior Co-ordinator Marion Wilkinson Tel: 07940 418603 j.wilkinson742[at]btinternet.com Kit Manager Val Lawson Tel: 01282 423808 Email: kit[at]claytonlemoors.org.uk Elected Members Andrew Armstrong Tel: 07971 001583 Email: claytonjuniors[at]gmail.com Richard Lawson Tel: 01282 423808 Email: valric55[at]virginmedia.com Captains’ contact details are on the back page of the Newsletter. 5 BOOTHY’S BIT Thanks to all the members who contacted me with suggestions on how to overcome my Achilles injury. A month down the line, there has been gradual improvement but I’m still unable to run for any length of time. Another trip to the doctor, I fear. Mid Lancs XC Fixture As you may have seen on p 4, the Mid Lancs XC fixture on 26th October was the last to be organised by Richard Lawson. If any member is keen to take up the mantle of race organiser, please contact Mike Wallis or any member of the committee. I would like to add my own thanks to Richard (& Val & ‘team’) for all their work over the last 20 years+. Charitable Donation 2014 For a number of year the Club has made an annual donation to charity. Amongst the recipients have been: our junior section, NW Air Ambulance, RNLI, Bowland/ Pennine MRT & Rossendale MRT. If any of you have any suggestions for a charity that you feel deserves the club’s support, please contact Chairman Jim or Mike Wallis. Our main charity fund raising event is the Club Presentation Evening which will take place on 1st February 2014 at Burnley FC’s 1882 Lounge. Marie has been busy with the organisation of the FRA Presentation recently, so details of times, tickets will be in the January ‘Harrier’. If you were, I’m sorry it’s time to hand it back. Preparations are well advanced for this year’s Celebration Evening and we need to have the trophies returned (CLEAN), so that they can be collat- ed and inscribed in good time. PLEASE Return your trophy to the Trophy Custodian: Harry Manning, or via a Committee member AS SOON AS POSSIBLE THANK YOU My apologies go to all readers that this month’s Harrier is a bit late.
