Born in Papua New Guinea in 1958, Paul was raised in Melbourne where he attended Wesley College. He began classical piano lessons at the age of five, studying with Mack Jost from 1965-1978. He began informal studies in jazz around 1976, and fully devoted his energies to improvised music from 1978. During the 70’s he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theatre and cabaret projects. He lived in Munich, Germany from 1980-1985, where he was active on the local and European jazz scenes, performing and recording with Johnny Griffin, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Benny Bailey, Guenther Klatt, Marty Cook and many others. He returned to Australia in 1986. In 1983, he formed the Paul Grabowsky Trio, winner of four ARIA awards and one of Australia’s longest-living and most influential jazz ensembles. He has also won two Helpmann awards, several Bell awards and a Deadly award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007. As a performer, he became known for his work with the ‘Wizards of Oz’, a group he co- led with saxophonist Dale Barlow from 1987-1989 and Vince Jones, for whom he was musical director in 1988-89. -

Festival Statistics: Key Concepts and Current Practices
2695 Festivals can provide substantive income and generate tourism at both local and national levels. There is growing recognition of the importance of collecting data in this field, particularly to gauge the social and economic contributions of festivals to host societies. This requires a greater understanding of how festivals can be measured and data collected in a standardised, systematic manner based on existing models and current practices. This handbook presents the theories, concepts and practices that are currently used in the effective measuring of festivals across the globe. Allegro con brio 2. Tema con variazioni: Andante con moto 3. Rondo: Allegro Beethoven’s first three violin sonatas were composed between 1797–98. Although they were dedicated to Antonio Salieri, with whom he might briefly have studied, they show the unmistakable influence Mozart made on Beethoven’s music at the time, as he acquired full fluency in the Viennese Classical style. And in the customary Classical style, they are indicated as sonatas ‘for pianoforte and violin’, with both instruments having a more or less equal role. While the Op. 12 violin sonatas are not necessarily as formally daring as the piano sonatas of the same period, they reveal Beethoven’s firm grasp of how to write idiomatically for the violin, as well as his increasing understanding of how to create a sonata style based on the apparent unification of two opposing forces. The opening movement begins with a bold unison figure, which quickly gives way to a sonorous first subject. In the central development section, rapid passages of semiquavers are passed between violin and piano in quick sequence, making for a vigorous dialogue. The middle movement takes the form of a theme and variations, the theme being audibly based on the opening figure of the previous movement.
