FILMHISTORIA Online Vol. 30, núm. 1 (2020) · ISSN: 2014-668X The Boers and the Breaker: Bruce Beresford’s Breaker Morant Re-Viewed ROBERT J. CARDULLO University of Michigan Abstract This essay is a re-viewing of Breaker Morant in the contexts of New Australian Cinema, the Boer War, Australian Federation, the genre of the military courtroom drama, and the directing career of Bruce Beresford. The author argues that the film is no simple platitudinous melodrama about military injustice—as it is still widely regarded by many—but instead a sterling dramatization of one of the most controversial episodes in Australian colonial history. The author argues, further, that Breaker Morant is also a sterling instance of “telescoping,” in which the film’s action, set in the past, is intended as a comment upon the world of the present—the present in this case being that of a twentieth-century guerrilla war known as the Vietnam “conflict.” Keywords: Breaker Morant; Bruce Beresford; New Australian Cinema; Boer War; Australian Federation; military courtroom drama. Resumen Este ensayo es una revisión del film Consejo de guerra (Breaker Morant, 1980) desde perspectivas como la del Nuevo Cine Australiano, la guerra de los boers, la Federación Australiana, el género del drama en una corte marcial y la trayectoria del realizador Bruce Beresford. El autor argumenta que la película no es un simple melodrama sobre la injusticia militar, como todavía es ampliamente considerado por muchos, sino una dramatización excelente de uno de los episodios más controvertidos en la historia colonial australiana. Directors The Directors of the Company at any time during or since the financial year are: Jenny Morris OAM, MNZM Non-executive Writer Director since 1995 and Chair of the Board A writer member of APRA since 1983, Jenny has been a music writer, performer and recording artist since 1980 with three top 5 and four top 20 singles in Australia and similar success in New Zealand. Jenny has recorded nine albums gaining gold, platinum and multi-platinum status in the process and won back to back ARIA awards for best female vocalist. Jenny was inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame in 2018. Jenny is also a non-executive director and passionate supporter of Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Australia. Jenny presents their biennial ‘Art of Music’ gala event, which raises significant and much needed funds for the charity. Bob Aird Non-executive Publisher Director from 1989 to 2019 Bob recently retired from his position as Managing Director of Universal Music Publishing Pty Limited, Universal Music Publishing Group Pty Ltd, Universal/MCA Publishing Pty Limited, Essex Music of Australia Pty Limited and Cromwell Music of Australia Pty Limited which he held for 16 years. -

HOW DALE BARLOW BECAME A JAZZ MESSENGER by Eric Myers _________________________________________________________ [This article first appeared in Jazzchord, Sep/Oct 1996.] ost students of Australian jazz can point to their favourite milestones, which had momentous implications for key musicians. In terms of the impact of Australian M jazz in the international arena, one might note the invitation issued by Harry Stein in Melbourne in early 1946 to Graeme Bell, asking him whether he’d like to take his band to Prague for the World Youth Festival. Or the invitation issued in 1954 by the owner of Klein’s jazz club in Detroit to Errol Buddle to take over the resident band (which included the pianist Tommy Flanagan). Or, perhaps more significantly, the subsequent invitation from another Detroit club owner Ed Sarkesian to Errol to provide a band of Australians for the Rouge Lounge (that band became the Australian Jazz Quartet). Buddle’s invitation to take over the band at Klein’s led to a significant milestone in Australian jazz: the advent of the Australian Jazz Quartet. In this league is the invitation issued in 1989 by the drummer Art Blakey in New York to Dale Barlow to become a fulltime member of the Jazz Messengers. How did this come about? How was it that an Australian saxophonist - a white musician - was able to join a band which, for 35 years, had virtually defined hard-bop, and represented one of the pinnacles of achievement in black American jazz? In 1989 Dale Barlow had returned to New York on a whim. -

It is an annual forum for ideas relating to the creation and performance of Australian music. In the spirit of the great Australian composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks, an outstanding advocate of Australian music delivers the address each year, challenging the status quo and raising issues of importance in new music. In 2012, Michael Kieran Harvey was guest speaker presenting his Address entitled What Would Peggy Do? at the Sydney Conservatorium on 22 October and BMW Edge Fed Square in Melbourne on 2 November 2012.
