The report was prepared for section 46 of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, in accordance with the requirements of that Act and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983. It was approved by the Board on 11 September 2019 and provides a comprehensive review of the ABC’s performance and delivery in line with its Charter remit. The ABC continues to be the home and source of Australian stories, told across the nation and to the world. The Corporation’s commitment to innovation in both storytelling and broadcast delivery is stronger than ever, as the needs of its audiences rapidly evolve in line with technological change. Australians expect an independent, accessible public broadcasting service which produces quality drama, comedy and specialist content, entertaining and educational children’s programming, stories of local lives and issues, and news and current affairs coverage that holds power to account and contributes to a healthy democratic process. ‘Fireflies in a jar’ - an interview with Megan Washington By Megan Spencer Australian Musician Magazine, November 2010. There are those among us whose minds work differently when it comes to storytelling. Rather than sit down and ‘tell a story’, they sit down and and ‘tell a song’. These people are ‘hardwired’ for song. When stories start spinning in their heads and hearts, poetry spills out (not prose) which, coupled with music, become ‘lyrics’. Spontaneously and simultaneously music generates from within their imaginations to accompany each word. Melody and rhythm entwine themselves around phrases, until they fuse to form verses, choruses, repeat; and then become… song. Megan Washington aka ‘Washington’ is one of these enviable ‘right-brained people’, a latter- day songstress or “chanteuse” as she is often referred to, not only in the media but by herself as well. (On Washington’s MySpace under ‘About Me’ you will find, “Chanteuse: noun (literary): a female singer, especially one who sings on the stage in a theatre or bar, where elegant people fall about in frantic and frenzied splendour.”) Since emerging onto the national stage just over 12 months ago, people have been swooning over the sound of Washington’s voice and music. But it is her songwriting that leaves its mark; strong, poetic, narrative, with a distinct emotional tone. It smacks of a discipline in advance of her 24 years and defines her presence within the Australian musical landscape. “Songwriting for me sits somewhere between therapy, memory and fantasy,” says Megan, fresh from her first stint at Splendour In The Grass, where she got to belt out songs from her just-released debut album, ‘I Believe You Liar’. -

PAUL GRABOWSKY SELECTED CREDITS DAISY WINTERS (2017) THE MENKOFF METHOD (2015) WORDS AND PICTURES (2013) EMPIRE FALLS (2005) THE JUNGLE BOOK 2(2003) (Original Songs, Lyrics – “Jungle Rhythm”, “W-I-L-D”, “Jungle Rhythm (Mowgli Solo)”) BIOGRAPHY Paul Grabowsky is a pianist, composer, arranger and conductor, and is one of Australia’s most distinguished artists. Born in Papua New Guinea in 1958, Paul was raised in Melbourne where he attended Wesley College. He began classical piano lessons at the age of five, studying with Mack Jost from 1965-1978. He began informal studies in jazz around 1976, and fully devoted his energies to improvised music from 1978. During the 70’s he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theatre and cabaret projects. He lived in Munich, Germany from 1980-1985, where he was active on the local and European jazz scenes, performing and recording with Johnny Griffin, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Benny Bailey, Guenther Klatt, Marty Cook and many others. He returned to Australia in 1986. In 1983, he formed the Paul Grabowsky Trio, winner of four ARIA awards and one of Australia’s longest-living and most influential jazz ensembles. He has also won two Helpmann awards, several Bell awards and a Deadly award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007. As a performer, he became known for his work with the ‘Wizards of Oz’, a group he co- led with saxophonist Dale Barlow from 1987-1989 and Vince Jones, for whom he was musical director in 1988-89. -

He has produced records for Logic, Demi Lovato, Madonna, Eminem, Kehlani, Zara Larsson, Remi Wolf, Kiiara, Noah Cyrus, and Cautious Clay. He produced and wrote Eminem’s “Bad Guy” off 2015’s Grammy Winner for Best Rap Album of the Year “ The Marshall Mathers LP 2.” He produced and wrote “Sober” by Demi Lovato, “playinwitme” by KYLE ft. Kehlani, “Adore” by Amy Shark, “I Got So High That I Found Jesus” by Noah Cyrus, and “Painkiller” by Ruel ft Denzel Curry. M-Phazes is into developing artists and collaborates heavy with other producers. He developed and produced Kimbra, KYLE, Amy Shark, and Ruel before they broke. He put his energy into Ruel beginning at age 13 and guided him to RCA. M-Phazes produced Amy Shark’s successful songs including “Love Songs Aint for Us” cowritten by Ed Sheeran. He worked extensively with KYLE before he broke and remains one of his main producers. In 2017, Phazes was nominated for Producer of the Year at the APRA Awards alongside Flume. In 2018 he won 5 ARIA awards including Producer of the Year. His recent releases are with Remi Wolf, VanJess, and Kiiara. Cautious Clay, Keith Urban, Travis Barker, Nas, Pusha T, Anne-Marie, Kehlani, Alison Wonderland, Lupe Fiasco, Alessia Cara, Joey Bada$$, Wiz Khalifa, Teyana Taylor, Pink Sweat$, and Wale have all featured on tracks M-Phazes produced.
