Submitted on behalf of the Adelaide Festival Corporation by: Rob Brookman Executive Director Adelaide Festival Corporation 27 September 2019 2 | P a g e 2018-19 ANNUAL REPORT for the Adelaide Festival Corporation From the Executive Director The 2019 Adelaide Festival was one of the most successful in its distinguished 59 - year history, with stellar artistic achievements matched by record-breaking box office receipts, excellent financial results and great outcomes for the State in terms of economic impact. Curated by Joint Artistic Directors Neil Armfield AO and Rachel Healy, the 2019 Adelaide Festival was steeped in exclusive events, standing ovations and critical acclaim. It set a new record with the biggest box office takings in the event’s history, achieving a total box office income of $6,056,904. This represents a 32% increase on the previous box office record set by Armfield and Healy’s second program in 2018. The 2019 Adelaide Festival offered more than 70 events in theatre, contemporary and classical music, opera, dance, forums, food and visual arts – including unique local programs Adelaide Writers’ Week, WOMADelaide and Chamber Landscapes at UKARIA Cultural Centre. Sold out events included: The Magic Flute, Two Feet, Un Poyo Rojo, La Reprise, 13 Ways to Look At Birds, The Stretensky Monastery Choir, Uncle Vanya and many of the Chamber Landscapes concerts at UKARIA. A total audience of more than 355,000 attended Adelaide Festival events (including WOMADelaide). Ticketed attendances of audiences were in excess of 75,000 and interstate audiences accounted for 24% of ticket sales. Audiences of more than 48,000 attended the Festival’s free visual art exhibitions which included Quilty at the Art Gallery of South Australia, The Violet Ballet at ACE Open, Roger Ballen at GAGPROJECTS and Adelaide//International at Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art. The much-anticipated debut Adelaide Writers’ Week from Director Jo Dyer attracted a crowd of more than 85,000 to the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden where 119 Writers from Australia and around the world featured in six days of free open-air readings, panel sessions and literary conversations from March 2 to 7. Other free programming included the highly popular Breakfast with Papers and Festival Forums on board the Festival Palais. The Adelaide Festival schools program continues to grow with attendances of 3,425 39 different schools attending 45 separate performances and workshops across 19 different events. Corporate growth and philanthropic support again contributed to the success of the Festival not only hitting all targets (16% of Festival revenue) in 2019 but ensuring as many people as possible were able to access the best the Adelaide Festival has to offer through such programs as the Pay What You Can program. 3 | P a g e 2018-19 ANNUAL REPORT for the Adelaide Festival Corporation The 2019 Adelaide Festival again proved its importance to the South Australian economy, generating an estimated gross expenditure of $76.8 million for the State, the strongest economic impact result in the Festival’s history. Over 19,000 visitors came from interstate or overseas for the Festival, with visitor bed nights increasing to 141,258 (up from 138,021 in 2018). Net impact on Gross State Product is estimated at $23 million (up 10%), including the creation of the equivalent of 216 full time jobs. While the Festival’s economic impact is important, that value sits alongside its cultural and reputational significance. Its economic impact is of course only possible because of the Adelaide Festival’s catalytic role in bringing audiences and communities together with the world’s greatest performers, writers and artists. Finally, the overall financial outcome for the Festival was also very pleasing with a surplus of $411,000 being recorded for the Financial Year 2018/19. This saw the Festival move another step towards its financial goal of achieving a prudent level of reserves of 20% of annual turnover. There is growing recognition of the importance of collecting data in this field, particularly to gauge the social and economic contributions of festivals to host societies. This requires a greater understanding of how festivals can be measured and data collected in a standardised, systematic manner based on existing models and current practices.     Factors that influence engagement in on-site environmentally responsible behaviours at music festivals Marisol Alonso Vazquez Bachelor in Foreign Trade Master in Marketing A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 Business School i Abstract The study of on-site environmentally responsible behaviours at outdoor events is important because of the negative environmental degradation that may be caused when hosting these events. Studying these behaviours is especially important at music festivals that are held in protected areas, and/or for festival managers who have an interest in controlling the events’ negative environmental impacts. Despite recent interest by event managers in developing strategies to encourage attendees’ environmentally responsible behaviours, this task is still a challenge because attendees may be disinterested in behaving pro-environmentally in the music festival context. Given this, event managers need to find novel ways to encourage attendees to participate more in on-site environmentally responsible behaviours. To contribute toward finding alternative ways to encourage more participation, this research investigated the major psychographic factors that influence attendees’ engagement in on-site environmentally responsible behaviours at music festivals. To identify these factors, the following research activities were carried out: phone interviews with music festival managers (10 participants); two online questionnaires (pre-visit and post-visit to festivals) across multiple music festivals (1,313 and 420 participants, respectively); and on-site interviews with attendees at a three-day music festival located near an Australian national park (81 participants). The findings of this study reveal that event managers consider it important to build a pro- environmental culture into their event communities in order to capitalise on attendees’ sense of community that may support environmentally responsible behaviours.

With unparalleled growth in audience number for several decades, an ongoing international reputation for excellence and deep engagement with South Australians, the festival sector is critical to the State’s image. An Omnibus Survey in 2018 showed that 80% of people think hosting festivals improves the image of the State.     HISTORY OF THE ADELAIDE FESTIVAL OF ARTS Past Festivals and Posters Below is a collection of each Festival poster since its inception in 1960. The Adelaide Bank 2008 Festival of Arts was held from 29 February – 16 March, with Brett Sheehy as the Artistic Director for the second year in a row. One of the largest multi‐arts festivals in the world, the 2008 Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts attracted a 600,000‐strong audience and exceeded box office targets to achieve more than $2.5 million in ticket sales. Total income from the Festival and its associated events reached nearly $6 million. The event, which celebrated its 25th anniversary, featured 62 high quality international and national arts events and brought more than 700 of the world’s best artists to Adelaide, creating an unparalleled environment of cultural vibrancy, artistic endeavor and creativity. The Festival delivered to South Australia a total net economic benefit of $14.03 million in terms of income and ensured a positive social impact by enhancing the state’s reputation and image in the eyes of the event’s local, interstate and international attendees. There were a total of 300,000 free attendances of Northern Lights (up from150,000 in 2006). Northern Lights was funded by the Premier to continue an additional 2 weeks beyond it scheduled duration. 20,000 people attended the Northern Lights Opening Night – Ignition! 35,000 people attended Visual art exhibitions and 5000 attended Artists’ Week. The 2008 Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts achieved; • An increase of 8% over 2006 to create a direct net economic impact of $14.03million to the state • Interstate (8,025) and international (2,992) visitation increased by 105% to 11,017 over 2006.
