With few exceptions, 2017 was a very poor year butterfly-wise, at least in South Africa. The drought continues to have a very negative impact on our hobby, but here’s hoping that 2018 will be better! Braving the Great Karoo and Noorsveld (Mark Williams) In the first week of November 2017 Jeremy Dobson and I headed off south from Egoli, at the crack of dawn, for the ‘Harde Karoo’. (Is there a ‘Soft Karoo’?) We had a very flexible plan for the six-day trip, not even having booked any overnight accommodation. We figured that finding a place to commune with Uncle Morpheus every night would not be a problem because all the kids were at school. As it turned out we did not have to spend a night trying to kip in the Pajero – my snoring would have driven Jeremy nuts ... Friday 3 November The main purpose of the trip was to survey two quadrants for the Karoo BioGaps Project. One of these was on the farm Lushof, 10 km west of Loxton, and the other was Taaiboschkloof, about 50 km south-east of Loxton. The 1 000 km drive, via Kimberley, to Loxton was accompanied by hot and windy weather. The temperature hit 38 degrees and was 33 when the sun hit the horizon at 6 pm.

    1 Distribution of Butterfly Species Associated with 2 Environmental Factors in Sri Lanka 3 4 P.M.S.S Kumari1,* and P.Wijekoon1 5 6 1Department of Statistics and Computer Science, 7 Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya, 8 Sri Lanka. 9 10 ABSTRACT 11 12 The species diversity monitoring of butterflies in Sri Lanka is considered in this study under 13 certain environmental factors. Species richness, and Shannon and Simpson’s diversity indices 14 were calculated to understand the variation of the distributions of butterfly species. Maximum and 15 minimum diversity and richness were observed from Rathnapura and Puththalama districts in Sri 16 Lanka, respectively. Based on the Diamond’s assembly rules and Probabilistic models, it was 17 noted that most of the butterflies were randomly distributed, and there was little predictable co- 18 occurrence between species pairs. To study the distributional patterns of butterfly species with 19 environmental factors, five different types of regression models were fitted by considering the 20 occurrences of each species. The results clearly indicated that the distribution of butterfly species 21 varies from species to species according to the different environmental factors. Further, the 22 occurrence of most of the butterfly species depends on temperature and total rain fall. Prediction 23 of species occurrences with respect to the environmental factors can be done by using the best 24 fitted model of each species. My purpose was to observe photographing of the color plates for Dr. Douglas C. Ferguson's fascicle of Moths of America treating the family Liparidae. The air was balmy, and the Phoebus sennae crowded about the Camellia blossoms. In the "Bug House" laboratory, Dr. Fer­ guson carefully positioned his well-selected specimens on special parrafin blocks covered with light blue tissue. The photographic team of Dominick and C. R. Edwards took over, shooting the plates in short order. I sat in the total darkness of the darkroom while they J processed the film. Their technical jargon rivaled that of astronauts in a space capsule, and I was startled by the fiendish laughter of "Murphy," a mechanical laughing toy heard from its place in a work table drawer when a minor hitch in operations developed.
