Abstract: This study describes the results and collection practices for obtaining arthropod samples to be stud- ied as potential sources of new medicines in a bioprospecting effort. From 1994 to 1998, 1800 arthropod sam- ples of 6-10 g were collected in 21 sites of the Área de Conservación Guancaste (A.C.G) in Northwestern Costa Rica. The samples corresponded to 642 species distributed in 21 orders and 95 families. Most of the collections were obtained in the rainy season and in the tropical rainforest and dry forest of the ACG. Samples were obtained from a diversity of arthropod orders: 49.72% of the samples collected corresponded to Lepidoptera, 15.75% to Coleoptera, 13.33% to Hymenoptera, 11.43% to Orthoptera, 6.75% to Hemiptera, 3.20% to Homoptera and 7.89% to other groups.

LATE SUMMER EDITION: JANUARY / AFRICAN FEBRUARY 2018 - 1 BUTTERFLY THE LEPIDOPTERISTS’ SOCIETY OF AFRICA NEWS LATEST NEWS Welcome to the first newsletter of 2018! I trust you all have returned safely from your December break (assuming you had one!) and are getting into the swing of 2018? With few exceptions, 2017 was a very poor year butterfly-wise, at least in South Africa. The drought continues to have a very negative impact on our hobby, but here’s hoping that 2018 will be better! Braving the Great Karoo and Noorsveld (Mark Williams) In the first week of November 2017 Jeremy Dobson and I headed off south from Egoli, at the crack of dawn, for the ‘Harde Karoo’. (Is there a ‘Soft Karoo’?) We had a very flexible plan for the six-day trip, not even having booked any overnight accommodation. We figured that finding a place to commune with Uncle Morpheus every night would not be a problem because all the kids were at school. As it turned out we did not have to spend a night trying to kip in the Pajero – my snoring would have driven Jeremy nuts ... Friday 3 November The main purpose of the trip was to survey two quadrants for the Karoo BioGaps Project. One of these was on the farm Lushof, 10 km west of Loxton, and the other was Taaiboschkloof, about 50 km south-east of Loxton. The 1 000 km drive, via Kimberley, to Loxton was accompanied by hot and windy weather. The temperature hit 38 degrees and was 33 when the sun hit the horizon at 6 pm.

Some Lep. Soc. members had converged on Mexico City on tBe 29th, via various flights from the U.S., and after endless waits made it through customs and onto a chartered bus for Cocoyoc. There others, who had driven down and collected along the way, arrived over the next two days. The first evening was spent getting acquainted with the Diaz Frances and de la Maza families, who had done much of the organizing for the meeting, cautiously enjoying the excellent Mexican food, unfamiliar to some of us, and learning to find our ways across courtyards and ~hrough arcades to and from our rooms without falling into swimming pools, fount ains, or swan-ponds. The Executive Council meeting scheduled for Thursday was not held, for lack of a quorum, so all were free to accept the invitation to visit the collections of Alberto Diaz Frances and the de la Maza family in Mexico City.

Their wing dorsa generate superficially similar blue structural colour. Cover- and ground-scale layers in the wings of the species involved were investigated using optical and electronic microscopy to detect micro- and nanostructures. The layers of the scales in the two species are qualitatively dif ferent in terms of their morphologies and pigmentation. Wing reflectivity was measured using spect roscopic and goniometric techniques and simple models were proposed to analyse the measurements taken. Optical properties of the two butterflies are not as significantly different as their morphologies. We hypothesize that the different wing-beats of the species examined have an important role and explain how the two optically similar phenomena can work differently in nature. Introduction: The fascinating Neotropical butterfly genus Morpho Fabricius , 1807 (Insecta: Lepi doptera: Nymphalidae: Morphinae) has received particular attention from entomologists, who veiy recently studied their diversity and phylogeny using new methods (Penz & Devries , 2002). Moreover the physicists working on these organisms tend to focus their investigations in the genus on detecting micro- and nanostructures in the wing scales and on the mechanism by which these structures manipu late light.

For the first time is presented a list of Lepidoptera recorded in the municipality of Joaçaba, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The individuals were collected between the years 2006 and 2010 in different environments resulting in 58 species belonging to ten families. The most abundant families were Nymphalidae and Saturniidae, representing 34,48% and 24,13% of the species richness respectively. In addition, the most representative genera of Nymphalidae were Morpho (three species), and Hamadryas (two species), while in Saturniidae were Rothschildia (three species) and Automeris (two species).
