Abstract: During five entomological field expeditions between 2008 and 2019, butterfly speciemens were collected in Oman, and a total of 492 specimens of 46 species were documented. Faunistic and distribution data for each species is presented, along a short overview of the physical geography of Oman and biogeo- graphical notes of the butterfly fauna. With 30 figures. Keywords: butterfly, faunistic, distribution, Oman. Introduction The Sultanate of Oman is located at the southeastern coast of the Arabian Penninsula. The country’s landscape is divided into two major ecoregions, (1) Temperate grasslands, savannas, and shrublands, (2) Deserts and xeric shrublands. The former includes the higher regions of the rocky, 650 km long Al Hajar Mountain range from the tip of the Musandam peninsula to Ra's Al Had.

Prosiding Seminar Nasional Biologi dan Pembelajarannya Universitas Negeri Medan, 12 Oktober 2018 ISSN 2656-1670 PALATABILITAS KUPU-KUPU (LEPIDOPTERA: NYMPHALIDAE DAN PAPILIONIDAE) SEBAGAI PAKAN Tarsius fuscus DI PENANGKARAN PALATABILITY OF BUTTERFLIES (LEPIDOPTERA: NYMPHALIDAE AND PAPILIONIDAE Tarsius fuscus IN CAPTIVITY Indra A.S.L.P. Putri1 1Balai Penelitian dan Pengembangan Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan Makassar, e-mail: [email protected], Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan Km 16.5 Telp +62411504049 dan +62411504058, Makassar ABSTRACT Tarsius fuscus is an endemic animal of Sulawesi. It is a nocturnal primate, consuming insects in its natural habitat. However, palatability of Nymphalidae and Papilionidae butterflies families as the feed of Tarsius fuscus is unknown. The butterflies are available abundantly around the Tarsius’ captivity in the natural habitat of Tarsius fuscus, therefore they are a potential natural feeding for Tarsius fuscus. This study aims to determine the palatability of Nymphalidae and Papilionidae butterflies families as the feed for Tarsius fuscus. This information is important to provide natural feeding for Tarsius fuscus, to avoid the dependence of Tarsius fuscus on grasshopper feed in captivity. The palatability treatment used was free choice feeding methods. The diet was given ad- libitum. The results showed that 12 species of butterflies from Nymphalidae family and 9 species of butterflies from the Papilionidae family were palatable for the feed of Tarsius fuscus Keywords : diet, Tarsius fuscus, Lepidoptera, captivity ABSTRAK Tarsius fuscus merupakan salah satu satwa endemik Sulawesi.

The collections of Francillon, Drury, MacLeay, Sir J. Banks, and Donovan, contained almost all that was then known of Indian Entomo- logy, with which our Continental neighbours were then, as still, comparatively ignorant. To these collections, examined b}f Fabricius himself, Donovan had free access, and his figures of the insects therein contained, which had served as types for the descriptions of the Entomologist of Kiel, are especially valuable. The progress of Entomology, as a science, has so much advanced, as to render a that its republication of this work advisable ; at the same time, however, requiring original Linnasan style should not be retained, but that it should be brought down to the present state of science.

LATE SUMMER EDITION: JANUARY / AFRICAN FEBRUARY 2018 - 1 BUTTERFLY THE LEPIDOPTERISTS’ SOCIETY OF AFRICA NEWS LATEST NEWS Welcome to the first newsletter of 2018! I trust you all have returned safely from your December break (assuming you had one!) and are getting into the swing of 2018? With few exceptions, 2017 was a very poor year butterfly-wise, at least in South Africa. The drought continues to have a very negative impact on our hobby, but here’s hoping that 2018 will be better! Braving the Great Karoo and Noorsveld (Mark Williams) In the first week of November 2017 Jeremy Dobson and I headed off south from Egoli, at the crack of dawn, for the ‘Harde Karoo’. (Is there a ‘Soft Karoo’?) We had a very flexible plan for the six-day trip, not even having booked any overnight accommodation. We figured that finding a place to commune with Uncle Morpheus every night would not be a problem because all the kids were at school. As it turned out we did not have to spend a night trying to kip in the Pajero – my snoring would have driven Jeremy nuts ... Friday 3 November The main purpose of the trip was to survey two quadrants for the Karoo BioGaps Project. One of these was on the farm Lushof, 10 km west of Loxton, and the other was Taaiboschkloof, about 50 km south-east of Loxton. The 1 000 km drive, via Kimberley, to Loxton was accompanied by hot and windy weather. The temperature hit 38 degrees and was 33 when the sun hit the horizon at 6 pm.

The check-list is based mainly on the collection of ring species in a relatively short time. The information A.B.R.I. (African Butterfly Research Institute, Nairobi). Furthermore records from the collection of the National density is frequently underestimated and collection data Museum of Kenya (Nairobi), the BIOTA-project and from offers a description of species diversity within a local literature were included in this list. In total 491 species or area, in particular with reference to rapid measurement 55 % of approximately 900 Kenyan species could be veri- of biodiversity (Trueman & Cranston 1997, Danks 1998, fied for the area. 31 species were not recorded before from Trojan 2000). Kenyan territory, 9 of them were described as new since the appearance of the book by Larsen (1996). The kind of list being produced here represents an information source for the total species diversity of the Checkliste der Tagfalter des Kakamega-Waldschutzge- Kakamega forest.

It will however remain, together with the four completed volumes of the " Bulletin of the Hill Museum," as a lasting memorial to to the magnificent collection of Lepidoptera amassed by Mr. Joicey, and to the work carried out at the Hill Museum under his auspices. G. Talbot. Original from and digitized by National University of Singapore Libraries CATALOGUE OF THE TYPE SPECIMENS OF LEPIDOPTERA RHOPALOCERA IN THE HILL MUSEUM. By A. G. GABRIEL, F.E.S. INTRODUCTION BY G. TALBOT. It is important to know exactly where type specimens are to be found. The British Museum set an example by publishing catalogues of some of their Rhopalocera types, and we hope this will be continued. Mr. Gabriel, who was responsible for that work, has been asked by Mr. Joicey to prepare a catalogue for the Hill Museum. The original description of almost every name in this catalogue has been examined for the correct reference, and where the sex or habitat was wrongly quoted, the necessary correction has been made.
