With the Wyatt family’s generous support, a $1 million Ertan Gastroenterology Endowed Chair was established at the UTH McGovern Medical School [project #11563] in 2015. Also, a $1 million Chao Family Foundation donation matched by the Memorial Hermann Hospital System [MHHS] and a $2 million Ertan – Chao Endowed Directorship [project #902069] was established for the Ertan Digestive Disease Center of Excellence in 2018. The EERF is used for GI/Hepatology post –graduate education and research activities at the EDDC and the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the UT McGovern Medical School [UTMMS]. These efforts supported to place our GI/Hepatolgy and GI Surgery program#2 in Texas and #34 in the US out of 1,575 other GI/Hepatology and GI Surgery programs by the US News & World in 2018. We are placed above the BCM in Houston (#38), the Baylor-Dallas (#42), Yale and Duke (#39), the University Wisconsin (#42), the University of Chicago (#47), the Emory/UAB/UTSW (50’s) and various other GI/Hepatology and GI Surgery program. After the significant success of the Ertan Digestive Disease Center of Excellence since 2011, the framework is completed to establish the Houston Digestive Health Institute [HDHI] – a model that would be the first of its kind in Texas. The HDHI was strongly supported by the UTMMS and the MHHS for the tri-fold mission of multidisciplinary and integrated academic health care delivery, clinical research and postgraduate education with highest quality metrics by the outstanding UTMMS academicians in gastroenterology, hepatology, liver/pancreas transplantation surgery, GI and bariatric surgery, GI pathology and GI anesthesiology. We are continuing to be at the forefront of academic healthcare delivery, clinical research and postgraduate education in GI and Hepatology. Our mission and main focus is on the most compassionate expert academic patient care and research in medical and/or surgical treatments of our patients with GI and Hepatology diseases as well as training future experts and leaders in GI and Hepatology.
