  • Star Wars: the Fascism Awakens Representation and Its Failure from the Weimar Republic to the Galactic Senate Chapman Rackaway University of West Georgia
STAR WARS: THE FASCISM AWAKENS 7 Star Wars: The Fascism Awakens Representation and its Failure from the Weimar Republic to the Galactic Senate Chapman Rackaway University of West Georgia Whether in science fiction or the establishment of an earthly democracy, constitutional design matters especially in the realm of representation. Democracies, no matter how strong or fragile, can fail under the influence of a poorly constructed representation plan. Two strong examples of representational failure emerge from the post-WWI Weimar Republic and the Galactic Republic’s Senate from the Star Wars saga. Both legislatures featured a combination of overbroad representation without minimum thresholds for minor parties to be elected to the legislature and multiple non- citizen constituencies represented in the body. As a result both the Weimar Reichstag and the Galactic Senate fell prey to a power-hungry manipulating zealot who used the divisions within their legislature to accumulate power. As a result, both democracies failed and became tyrannical governments under despotic leaders who eventually would be removed but only after wars of massive casualties. Representation matters, and both the Weimer legislature and Galactic Senate show the problems in designing democratic governments to fairly represent diverse populations while simultaneously limiting the ability of fringe groups to emerge. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of representative democracies. A poor evil is for good men to do nothing.” constitutional design can even lead to tyranny. – Edmund Burke (1848) Among the flaws most potentially damaging to a republic is a faulty representational “So this is how liberty dies … with structure. Republics can actually build too thunderous applause.” - Padme Amidala (Star much representation into their structures, the Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, 2005) result of which is tyranny as a byproduct of democratic failure.

  • Joining the Evil Galactic Empire a Review of Star Wars: Tie Fighter by Brennan Movius STS 145
Joining the Evil Galactic Empire A Review of Star Wars: Tie Fighter By Brennan Movius STS 145 Publisher: LucasArts Project Leads and Design: Lawrence Holland and Edward Kilham Very Special Thanks: George Lucas “The Emperor welcomes you intohis Imperial Fleet.. ..” As soon as I read those first words in ‘Tie Fighter’s Starfghter Pilot Manual, I was hooked. Fresh off the experience of ‘X-Wing’ ’, I was ready for its sequel. And with ‘Tie Fighter’,LucasArts promised to delivera very different gaming experience. While previously my exploits in the Star Wars universe had been limited to the perspective of the benevolent Rebel Alliance, this time, I was joining the ranks of the Evil Galactic Empire. And I was very excited to finally be playing the role of a bad-guy. So much so, in fact, that not ten seconds into the opening crawl I had already embraced the Empire’s ‘proactive’ stance on Galactic defense. And while it’s important to realize that there are two sides to every conflict (the Empire can’tbe all bad, can it?), somehow I sensed that my concerns we no longer with the unalienable rights of the galactic inhabitants. My allegiance was to law and order now and the Rebels,I was told, were tryingto undermine it. So let’s crush that traitorous Rebel scum! Serve the Emperor! Building on a Giant When LucasArts went about creating ‘Tie Fighter’ (the definitive, single-player, space- combat simulator) they had the enormous success of ‘X-Wing’ to build on. Indeed, ‘X- Wing’ combined many features that have now become standardon like-genre games, like pre-renderedcut-scenes, multiple crafts and weapons, 3D shadedgraphics, mission objectives, and in-game training.

  • Foundation and Empire Kindle
FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Isaac Asimov | 304 pages | 01 Apr 1997 | Random House Publishing Group | 9780553293371 | English | New York, NY, United States Foundation and Empire PDF Book I just don't know any of them, except the person who recommended it to me, and she already read it, so. E' un tipo di fantascienza molto suggestiva. The contrast is quite striking. I can write on and on - wish to talk to more Asimovian fans out there. Later writers have added authorized, and unauthorized, tales to the series. Upon approaching the planet, they are drawn inside the Moon's core, where they meet a robot named R. The Mule whose real name is never revealed is a mental freak and possesses the ability to sense and manipulate the emotions of others. This tale was definitely a nod to Belisarius a famous Roman general. His notability and fame increase and he is eventually promoted to First Minister to the Emperor. And by the time Bayta breaks out of that mindset, it is too late. Asimov really blew this one out of the water. Lathan Devers, a native of the Foundation, and Ducem Barr, a patrician from the planet Siwenna, have been "guests" of Bel Riose for several months when it becomes clear that they will soon be treated as enemies, or even be killed. Namespaces Article Talk. I envy you if you have not read Foundation and Empire before or if you have read but possess an even worse memory than mine well, may be the latter not so much.

The Posthuman Trajectory of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Universe Item Type Article Authors Hay, Jonathan Citation Hay, J. (2021). The posthuman trajectory of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Universe. Publisher Burrowing Wombat Press Journal The New York Review of Science Fiction Rights Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Download date 30/09/2021 10:01:05 Item License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Link to Item http://hdl.handle.net/10034/625333 The Posthuman Trajectory of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Universe Abstract Although he privately identified as a humanist, Isaac Asimov’s future history series Foundation Universe (1951 - 1993) is distinctly posthuman. Rhetorically and stylistically, the series utilises a number of repetitive components to ground its SF narratives within readers’ cognitive frames of reference. The series therefore gestures towards the entirely commonplace manner with which we engage with technologies in contemporary societies, and correspondingly, uses the rhetorical strategy of novum decay to suggest that posthuman life will be profoundly everyday. The mundane and repetitive components present within the series, and their connotations, are exemplified via the textual analysis of nine novels from the series; The Stars Like Dust (1951), Foundation (1951), The Currents of Space (1952), Foundation and Empire (1952), Second Foundation (1953), Foundation’s Edge (1982), Foundation and Earth (1986), Prelude to Foundation (1988), and Forward the Foundation (1993). Keywords: Isaac Asimov, Foundation series, critical posthumanism, novum decay. 1. Introduction When Isaac Asimov began to expand the fictional universe of his acclaimed Foundation Trilogy in 1982—almost thirty years after the publication of its prior entry, Second Foundation (1983)—he did so with the express intention of assimilating its continuity into a unified “history of the future” with his Robot and Galactic Empire series (Prelude ix).

  • This Is the Central Empire, Where Mankind Is Ruled Over By
This is the Central Empire, where mankind is ruled over by interstellar trading clans, trans- galactic cartels and stranger syndicates-all of whom are overseen by the Thousandth Dynasty, the ruling bureaucracy overseen by Heaven’s Son, His Divine Lunar Presence. Chosen of the Moon, betrayer of his Solar bride and eternal overseer of an empire whose thousand star systems are but a shadow of what they once stood for. Ten Million Dragons serve his every whim. The Grand Celestial Mountain, a subspatial virtual universe whose roots pierce the real world to create an Essence-fuelled infosphere, stands as shelter to his loyal Sidereal Exalted that tend its archives and impossible computing processes. And it is his will that mankind and only mankind stand in prominence within the empire’s history of human ascendance, despite the near-constant interactions between the countless alien races among the stars. And what a history it is! Lost forever to time is Creation: The mythical home of mankind where the First Emperor raised civilisations in praise to himself, the Golden Engineer built a thousand wonders and Dysseus the Cunning threw down his enemy Oliphem. Some say as mankind attempted to master the universe and seek the stars, Creation was lost in some terrible apocalypse-others that it was simply abandoned when new worlds could be forged out of cosmic dust. Better recorded are the achievements of science bolstered by the discovery of Essence during this period of expansion. Sentient souls were crafted directly from Essence to produce Artificial Intellects for everything from toys, to weapons and starships.
