The many cultural contributions Native Americans have made throughout Kentucky’s history, as well as the impact of lingering stereotypes. The program will be presented by Tressa Brown, who received her B.A. in Biology and Anthropology at Transylvania University and her M.A. in Anthropology from Arizona State University. She is currently the coordinator for the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission and the Kentucky African American Heritage Commission. She has worked for the past 25 years providing Native American educational programming for schools and the public, both in her current position as well as in her previous position as Curator at the Salato Wildlife Education Center. Her primary focus has been to identify the stereotypes and myths about Native Americans in general and Kentucky’s Native people in particular. Her position at KHC is to provide accurate information to educators and the public about the diversity of Native cultures as well as the issues affecting Native people in contemporary society. Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: Introduction The ease, efficiency, and speed of data communication and analyses are paramount to, and characteristic of, any mature science. GIS is an extraordinarily powerful tool for many aspects of (geo)spatial analyses (Longley et al., 2001), but while used routinely to solve complex spatial analyses problems in many disciplines, its adoption within paleontology has been lagging (Conroy, 2006). Part of the problem is that (a) GIS software is expensive (usually prohibitively so to the individual paleontological researcher) and (b) very few paleontologists are trained in its use. Here we show how paleontological data can be easily displayed and communicated in ways never before possible by combining Google Earth and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Using paleontological field data, we demonstrate several examples that go far beyond the novelty of simply “find my house” that many Google Earth users are currently familiar with. Specifically, we show how GIS map layers of paleontological interest, including their associated attribute tables (e.g., field catalog data), can be freely and easily transmitted to anyone with Internet access and familiarity with Google Earth.

Sutherland and W. Dan Hausel INTRODUCTION The South Pass (1:100,000) quadrangle is located at the southern end of the Wind River Mountains, and includes part of the Red Desert, the Great Divide Basin, and the northeastern corner of the Green River Basin, Wyoming. The map encloses the community of Atlantic City, and the historic gold mining communities of South Pass City and Lewiston. The major drainage across the northern part of the map is the eastward-flowing Sweetwater River, and small streams flow westward toward the Green River from the far western part of the map area. The southern half of the map area drains southward into the Great Divide Basin, which is enclosed by the high ground of the continental divide. Thirty-two 1:24,000 quadrangles that comprise the South Pass 1:100,000 scale map are listed as follows: Atlantic City, Anderson Ridge, Barras Springs, Buffalo Hump Basin, Bush Lake, Circle Bar Lake, Continental Peak, Cyclone Draw, Dickie Springs, Eagles Nest Draw, Five Fingers Butte, Five Fingers Butte NE, Freighter Gap, Happy Spring, Joe Hay Rim, John Hay Reservoir, Lewiston Lakes, Lost Creek Lake, Lost Creek Reservoir, Luman Rim, Monument Ridge, Olson Springs, Osborne Draw, Pacific Springs, Picket Lake, Radium Springs, Rock Cabin Spring, Soap Holes, South Pass City, Sulphur Bar Spring, The Pinnacles. Why, the Grand Encampment region alone could draw enough wire and our water power generate enough electricity with which to electrocute the world and to make the universe throb with magnetism. "Iron? We have mountains of it. At Guernsey and Rawlins are found the finest and most extensive deposits of Bessemer steel ores in the world. At Hartville it is shoveled into cars with a steam shovel at a cost of 3 cents per ton. If it were necessary to put a prop under this hemisphere to keep it in place Wyoming could do it with a pyramid of iron and steel.
