He has been going from one place to another preaching, teaching people about the kingdom of God. During the Passover festival celebration in Jerusalem, Jesus wanted to go down to Jerusalem. As He was going with His disciples, they passed through Samaria and entered Jericho. When they came near Jerusalem to Bethany at the mount of olive they stopped there and He sent out two of his disciples to Bethany to bring back to Him a colt of an ass which had never been driven by anyone. He told them if anyone should challenge them, their reply would be the Lord needed it. And after use, if would be sent back. They went and found the colt and they brought it to Jesus. The disciples and other people who were there began to throw their garments on the colt and they dressed it comfortably. Jesus Christ set upon it, they formed a procession and they were moving slowly towards Jerusalem. The people threw their garments and palm leaves and spread them on the road for Jesus to ride over on the colt the people were happy and were excited. They were praising God. The people who came from different towns and village to celebrate Passover were delighted at the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and joined the people to cry out saying; “Hossana, Blessed is he who came in the name of the Lord, I blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hossana in the highest.” Mark 11:9-10. People were happy, singing jubilation that the messiah and saviour had come to them. The whole city of Jerusalem was excited because of the song of praises rendered to God as a result of Jesus’ entry. When Jesus entered into Jerusalem he went to the to the temple. It was already late and he went back to Bethany with His disciples. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EVENT 1. Jesus is the messiah of peace and not that of war. Colt is a symbol of peace while horse is a symbol of war. 2. Jesus is the saviour of the world because originally Hossana means sure help or praise God who come to save. MORAL LESSONS 1. Christians are enjoined to take active part in celebrity palm Sunday. It commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ. It is the symbol of peace. 2. Praising God with our belonging does not leave anybody. Both elders and youths, men and women threw their garment on the road for Jesus ride. Over use what you consider very important to you to honour Jesus Assignment: 1. Mention two significances of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ? 2. At what period did the triumphant entry of Jesus take place? 3. What was the chant to Jesus by the people during his triumphant entry to Jerusalem? WEEK THREE THE CLEANING OF THE TEMPLE MATT 21:12-17, JHN 2:12-21 When Jesus entered the temple, there were lots of activities going on which includes buying and selling, exchange of money etc. This displeased Jesus Christ and he drove all the people hat sold and bought out of the temple and overthrew the tables of money changers as well as the seats of those who sold doves. After he had driven them he then said to them “It is written, my house shall be called the house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.” The cleansing of the temple by Jesus was not a mechanical exercise but spiritual. The temple represents the house of God where God’s presence stays and so should be highly recognized as such. MORAL LESSONS OF THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE 1. The house of God is a sacred place, Christians should not desecrate it. 2. Christians should not underestimate the house of God and do things that are illegitimate in it. 3. God is not happy with anyone or people who make the house of God unclean with activities displeasing to God. 4. God refers to our bodies as the temple of God, in the same way He demands our righteousness and purity. Assignment 1. Narrate the story of the cleansing of the temple. 2. State three moral lessons of the cleansing of the temple. WEEK FOUR TOPIC: THE LAST SUPPER LUKE 22:7-20, JOHN 13:1-12, MATHEW 26:17-30 Jesus also celebrated Passover with his disciples. He sent peter and john to go and prepare the Passover. Jesus told them where to go and get the Passover prepaid. These are the materials of Passover: 1. Unleavened bread (bread without yeast) - Body of Christ 2. A year old lamb without blemish - Allow no sin in your life 3. Bitter herbs - Agony of dying on the cross 4. Wine: Blood of Jesus So the two appointed disciple got a place, got everything set, it was the last supper they took with Jesus on earth. When the time came to eat the Passover they came and sat down in the prepared room. Jesus told them that it was his wish to eat the Passover with them before he died. As they were eating, He took bread and thanked God, them broke it and gave it to his disciples. He told them that the blood was representing His body and gave them. He told them to always do it in remembrance of Him. And after the supper, he took the cup and when He had given thanks, He gave them and said “Drink of it all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Luke 22:20). When the Supper ended, Satan had already entered into Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon to betray Him into the hands of sinful men and would be punished. Jesus then took a bowl of water and began to wash the feet of His disciples and dry them with the towel. Normally, one would expect the washing of the feet to be the work of a servant and not the master. When it was the turn of Simon Peter, He said to Jesus, “Lord are you washing my feet?” John 13:6. Jesus told him that Peter did not understand what He was doing but they would understand later. Jesus had set down the good example of humility. If Jesus Himself could wash the feet of the disciples no reason who they should not wash each others feet. And after the Supper, they sang hymns and then left for the mount of Olives to spend the night. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SUPPER God set Israelites free from political bondage. 1. The Passover was instituted to commemorate their freedom. Jesus gave the Passover a new significance. It has something to do with the spiritual liberation from sins. 2. Jesus gave the commandment that it should be done in remembrance of him 3. The Last Supper represent the sacrificed death of our Lord Jesus Christ that saved the world from sin. 4. The Last Supper is commonly called Holy Communion or the Eucharist. Some Christians normally do it on Sundays or on special occasions. 5. As many times as we do that we have fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ and one another. “This is my body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of me”. Assignment 1. Mention three significances of the Last Supper. 2. Mention the materials used for Passover. WEEK FIVE TOPIC: THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST OF JESUS CHRIST Jesus suffered more than any evangelist during His three and half year’s of earthly ministry. Towards the end of His ministry the persecutors did their worst, and finally His disciples betrayed and disappointed Him. THE ARREST OF JESUS CHRIST MARK 14:26-52, MATTEW 26:47-56) When Jesus and His disciples had finished eating. The Last Supper, they went straight to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus had already known what would happen to Him there he told His disciples that they would run away when He would have been arrested. But, Simon Peter said no to that and promised to be with him even to the very end. And Jesus did not hid it from Peter. He told him plainly that he would deny Him. “But Peter said to Him, even if all are made to stumble yet, I will not be. and Jesus said to him, truly I say to you, that today even this night before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times”. (Mark 19:29-30) But Peter spoke more vehemently saying if it meant he should die with Him, he would not hesitate to die, instead of him denying.
