Moreover, some time must have passed between the previous letter to Theo (letter 351) and the present one, because he goes into Theos reaction to that letter (ll. 3-6). En deed t me genoegen te zien ge de dingen bedaard opneemt, wat trouwens ik dan ook niet anders dacht. ik bedoel betreffende de gemaakte bezwaren. Nu, sedert ik laatst schreef heb ik erg getobt op die teekening van den mestvaalt.1 Het is een prachtig geval. De eerste teekening er van heeft reeds zoo veel veranderingen ondergaan nu eens hier wit, dan weer zwart geweest op verschillende plaatsen dat ik het overgebragt heb op een tweede papier omdat het eerste te gefatigueerd was. 2 En ben nu daarop op nieuw bezig. Kon ik t maar z krijgen als ik t in mijn gedachten heb. Nu, die tweede is op de zelfde grootte als de twee vroegeren van de veenderij & zandgraving3 & kan in de lijst. Op dit moment is er wel effekt in doch ik vrees ik t weer bederven zal. Maar daar moet men ook al niet bang voor zijn anders komt men er nooit. En tusschen de bedrijven in heb ik nog een groote studie van eene naaister gemaakt.4 Maar ik heb eene teleurstelling gehad met het Weeshuis in dit opzigt dat de permissie om er te teekenen mij niet is gegeven er waren, zeide men, geen antecedenten van dien aard en bovendien ging men schoonmaken en nieuwe vloeren leggen in de zalen. Enfin dit is nu zoo erg niet want er zijn meer weeshuizen, alleen in dit ken ik een man die ik geregeld tot model heb en dat zou me t maken van schetsen gemakkelijker hebben [1v:2] gemaakt.5 Verl. winter zag ik t Oude mannenhuis te Voorburg.7 Natuurlijk kleiner maar haast nog typiger. Toen op dien dag, t was tegen den avond, zaten de oudjes op banken & stoelen rond een oude kolomkagchel, heel echt. Misschien ga ik dat te Voorburg probeeren nu ik hier niet teregt kan. Was ook een dag op Schevening & zag daar een mooi geval van kerels met een wagen vol netten die getaand8 waren & op de duinen werden uitgespreid. Ik zal dat of t netten verstellen bepaald eens aangrijpen in groote teekening. t Is wel een verbetering Theo, dat ik die ramen & lijst heb laten maken voor fusains of wat t ook zij want dat werkt pleizierig.9 Wat ge zegt van te veel omgang met schilders niet goed maar eenigen omgang wel, vind ik wel waar. En ben om die reden ook blij v.d. Weele komt. En vooral als men in n zelfden geest werkt en zoekt kan men elkaar zeer veel sterken en animeeren en wordt niet zoo ligt gedecourageerd. En dan is t vaderland pas compleet & voelt men zich thuis. Dit is nu de compositie van de mestvaalt. K weet niet in hoever ge er uit wijs kunt worden. Voorop wijven die aschbakken leegen, daarachter de loodsen waar de mest bewaard wordt en de kerels aan t werk met kruiwagens &c. De eerste die ik maakte er van was eenigzins anders, 10 er stonden n.l. twee andere kerels op den voorgrond met zuidwesters die ze bij slecht weer dikwijls dragen, en was de groep vrouwen meer in toon. Doch dat lichteffekt is er werkelijk, daar t licht van boven tusschen de loodsen invalt op de figuren die in de gangpaden zich bevinden. t Zou een prachtig geval zijn om te schilderen. Ik denk dat gij er alles van begrijpt, ik wou dat ik er eens met Mauve over praten kon. Maar misschien is t zelfs beter van niet. Want niet altijd helpt het iemand vooruit als men raad krijgt van een ander, al is hij nog zoo knap en de knapsten zijn niet altijd ook knap in het duidelijk uitleggen van iets. Nog eens, ik weet het zelf niet wat wenschelijk is. Vooreerst, het schilderen is geenszins mijn hoofddoel en misschien krijg ik t alleen spoediger klaar voor een illustratie dan als iemand die aan illustraties volstrekt niet denken zou, mij er raad omtrent gaf. Met Rappard kan ik nog t best opschieten van allemaal. adieu kerel, t beste in alle dingen en dank voor tijdigen zending. t. t. And I was pleased to see that you were taking things calmly, and indeed I had expected nothing else. I mean as regards the objections raised. Well, since I last wrote Ive slaved away at that drawing of the dung-heap.11 Its a splendid sight. I have to get up early in the morning, for thats when I see the effects I want. If only I could get it as I have it in my mind. Well, the second is the same size as the two earlier ones of the peat-cutting and the sand quarry,13 and can go in the frame. There is effect in it at the moment, but I fear Ill spoil it again. But one mustnt be afraid of that, otherwise one will never get anywhere. And in the meantime Ive also done a large study of a woman sewing.14 But Ive had a disappointment with the Orphanage in that I have not been given permission to draw there there were, they said, no precedents of that kind and, furthermore, they were going to clean and lay new floors in the wards. Well, its not too bad for there are other orphanages, its just that in this one I know a man15 who has modelled for me regularly, and that would have made it [1v:2] easier for me to do sketches.16 Last winter I saw the old mens home at Voorburg.18 Smaller, of course, but almost more typical. On that day, it was near evening, the old boys were sitting on benches and chairs around an old cannon stove, very real. Perhaps Ill try that one in Voorburg now I cant do it here. Also went to Scheveningen for a day and saw a fine sight of fellows there with a cart full of nets that had been tanned and spread out on the dunes. Ill definitely tackle that or the nets being mended in a large drawing sometime. It certainly is an improvement, Theo, that I had those stretching frames and frame made for charcoal drawings or whatever it may be, for working with them is a pleasure.19 What you say about spending too much time with painters being not good but some time being all right is true, I believe.

You may augment this with other works by the artist - there are plenty of online resources, as well as inexpensive art book series for children; and of course the library is a prime resource as well. Depending upon the print, you may want to have the class draw a version themselves, using the pencils and crayons they have, and whatever 8.5 x 11 paper the teacher can share (do try to let teachers know IN ADVANCE if the class will be drawing).

That places this letter after letter 361 of on or about 11 July 1883, since there he wrote that he wanted to work in Scheveningen. It must also have been written before the coming Sunday, when he is expecting a photographer (l. 79; in letter 363 this photographer indeed turns out to have come). We therefore date the letter on or about Friday, 13 July 1883. Additional: Original [1r:1] Waarde Theo, Voor ik naar Schevening ga wou ik nog even een woordje met U praten. He also took an interest in the vocaon of his father, and became a missionary worker in an impoverished mining region in Belgium in 1879. In the following year Vincent took the suggeson of his brother Theo, and decided to become a painter. Aer several years of study he completed his first major work, The Potato Eaters, in 1885. Van Gogh produced more than 2,000 painngs, drawings and sketches in the last ten years of his life. His best‐known works were created in the last two years, a me in which he suffered from mental illness that eventually led to his suicide. Van Gogh pioneered the art movement that came to be known as Expressionism, and dramacally influenced the art of the 20th century, and specifically the Fauves (The Wild Beasts) and German Expressionists. Collecon Connecon The Mary Musser Gilmore Collecon at the Muscane Art Center contains works by some of the world’s most recognizable arsts. Represented in the collecon are Chagall, Renoir, Toulouse‐Lautrec, Van Gogh, Picasso, Masse, Modigliani, Braque and others. Mary Musser Gilmore was the niece of Laura Musser and one of Laura’s two primary heirs.

American Labor Party Poster for the Presidential campaign of 1948, including the candidacies of Henry A, Wallace for President, Glen Tayor for Vice President and Rockwell Kent for Congress. 17 x 11 inches. Letterpress reading as follows: "LABOR!/Vote Labor/Wallace for President/Taylor for Vice Presdident/Rockwell Kent for Congress/VOTE ROW C/American Labor Party." The candidates were running on the Progressive Party ticket, which was supported by the American Labor Party. Wallace had been Vice President under FDR, Glen Taylor was the incumbent Senator from Idaho (and a former country singer), and Rockwell Kent was, of course a well known artist and author with extremely liberal politcal views; Kent had a dairy farm in AuSable Forks, NY at the time of this campaign, and presumably ran for Congress in the district in which the farm was located. In nice condition, with minor browning at the edges. Very rare. $1500.00 2. Abeles, Sigmund. PHILOSOPHY STUDENT. Wood engraving, not dated. Inscribed "artist proof" and signed in pencil. 9 x 12 inches. In excellent condition. $300.00 3. Abramovitz, Albert (American, born Latvia, 1879-1963). STRIKE. Linoleum cut on wove paper, c. 1930s. Signed in pencil, and monogrammed "AA" in the block. Edition size not known. 11 5/8 x 9 7/8 inches, 321 x 252 mm., plus wide margins. This print is likely one that Aramovitz did for the WPA Federal Arts Project between 1935 and 1939.
