OKALOOSA VOLUNTEER ART LESSONS O.V.A.L. Team Handbook Okaloosa District Schools Revised 9/2012 OKALOOSA VOLUNTEER ART LESSONS - OVAL ART OVAL Art began in Okaloosa County in 1988. School District Director of Fine Arts, Dr. Bruce Criswell, modeled OVAL Art after a similar program developed in Brevard County. The original manual will remain available as a download. Many changes have occurred since 1988, not least, the development of the Internet; online resources are plentiful and easy to access. Volunteers to deliver the program, alas, are not; therefore, this update will present a pragmatic and streamlined overview of the program as it has been presented in training over the last several years. All that is required of an OVAL volunteer is an enjoyment of art, and enjoyment of working with elementary age children - that's it! WHAT YOU DO: Each grade, from K - 5, has designated art prints for its program. Volunteers go into the classroom periodically, for about 30 minutes, and present the print chosen for that session. This is an art appreciation program, so offering biographical material about the artist, along with asking questions about the print, will give a good basic lesson. You may augment this with other works by the artist - there are plenty of online resources, as well as inexpensive art book series for children; and of course the library is a prime resource as well. Depending upon the print, you may want to have the class draw a version themselves, using the pencils and crayons they have, and whatever 8.5 x 11 paper the teacher can share (do try to let teachers know IN ADVANCE if the class will be drawing).

  • Stanley Kubrick's 18Th Century
Stanley Kubrick’s 18th Century: Painting in Motion and Barry Lyndon as an Enlightenment Gallery Alysse Peery Abstract The only period piece by famed Stanley Kubrick, Barry Lyndon, was a 1975 box office flop, as well as the director’s magnum opus. Perhaps one of the most sumptuous and exquisite examples of cinematography to date, this picaresque film effectively recreates the Age of the Enlightenment not merely through facts or events, but in visual aesthetics. Like exploring the past in a museum exhibit, the film has a painterly quality harkening back to the old masters. The major artistic movements that reigned throughout the setting of the story dominate the manner in which Barry Lyndon tells its tale with Kubrick’s legendary eye for detail. Through visual understanding, the once obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray becomes a captivating window into the past in a manner similar to the paintings it emulates. In 1975, the famed and monumental director Stanley Kubrick released his one and only box-office flop. A film described as a “coffee table film”, it was his only period piece, based on an obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray (Patterson). Ironically, his most forgotten work is now considered his magnum opus by critics, and a complete masterwork of cinematography (BFI, “Art”). A remarkable example of the historical costume drama, it enchants the viewer in a meticulously crafted vision of the Georgian Era. Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon encapsulates the painting, aesthetics, and overall feel of the 18th century in such a manner to transform the film into a sort of gallery of period art and society.

  • To Theo Van Gogh, the Hague, on Or About Friday, 13 July 1883
To Theo van Gogh, The Hague, on or about Friday, 13 July 1883. on or about Friday, 13 July 1883 Metadata Source status: Original manuscript Location: Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum, inv. nos. b323 V/1962 (sheet 1) and b1036 V/1962 (sheet 2) Date: Vincent asks Theo to send a little extra, because he is already broke as a result of spending money in order to be able to start painting in Scheveningen (l. 49 and ll. 82-85). That places this letter after letter 361 of on or about 11 July 1883, since there he wrote that he wanted to work in Scheveningen. It must also have been written before the coming Sunday, when he is expecting a photographer (l. 79; in letter 363 this photographer indeed turns out to have come). We therefore date the letter on or about Friday, 13 July 1883.

  • NMDC Response to the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee Inquiry Into Tourism
NMDC response to CMS Select Committee Inquiry into Tourism This response is submitted on behalf of the National Museum Directors’ Council (NMDC). The NMDC represents the leaders of the UK's national collections and major regional museums. Our members are the national and major regional museums in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the National Archives. While our members are funded by government, the NMDC is an independent, non- governmental organisation. For more information on our activity and a full list of members see our website: www.nationalmuseums.org.uk Summary Museums are a critical part of the UK tourism offer, and visiting museums has never been so popular. Museums continue to develop their offer and operation to attract both domestic and overseas tourists. Museums and heritage continue to be primary reasons to visit Britain. Museums play a very significant role in the development of the regional tourist industry. They are frequently the most visited attraction in a town, city or region. They are also active in workforce development in this aspect of the tourism sector, including via apprenticeships and the sharing of good practice through local networks. Museum partnerships are an excellent and successful way of encouraging regional tourism, as well as building on the success of London. These partnerships have also helped with the regeneration of coastal towns built around culture or heritage. However, despite being so integral to the tourist industry, and the fact that supporting tourism is an economic priority for the Government, local authority and central Government investment for museums has substantially reduced since 2010.

  • Evolution and Ambition in the Career of Jan Lievens (1607-1674)
ABSTRACT Title: EVOLUTION AND AMBITION IN THE CAREER OF JAN LIEVENS (1607-1674) Lloyd DeWitt, Ph.D., 2006 Directed By: Prof. Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr. Department of Art History and Archaeology The Dutch artist Jan Lievens (1607-1674) was viewed by his contemporaries as one of the most important artists of his age. Ambitious and self-confident, Lievens assimilated leading trends from Haarlem, Utrecht and Antwerp into a bold and monumental style that he refined during the late 1620s through close artistic interaction with Rembrandt van Rijn in Leiden, climaxing in a competition for a court commission. Lievens’s early Job on the Dung Heap and Raising of Lazarus demonstrate his careful adaptation of style and iconography to both theological and political conditions of his time. This much-discussed phase of Lievens’s life came to an end in 1631when Rembrandt left Leiden. Around 1631-1632 Lievens was transformed by his encounter with Anthony van Dyck, and his ambition to be a court artist led him to follow Van Dyck to London in the spring of 1632. His output of independent works in London was modest and entirely connected to Van Dyck and the English court, thus Lievens almost certainly worked in Van Dyck’s studio. In 1635, Lievens moved to Antwerp and returned to history painting, executing commissions for the Jesuits, and he also broadened his artistic vocabulary by mastering woodcut prints and landscape paintings. After a short and successful stay in Leiden in 1639, Lievens moved to Amsterdam permanently in 1644, and from 1648 until the end of his career was engaged in a string of important and prestigious civic and princely commissions in which he continued to demonstrate his aptitude for adapting to and assimilating the most current style of his day to his own somber monumentality.

  • Mons Memorial Museum Hosts Its First Temporary Exhibition, One Number, One Destiny
1 Press pack PRESS RELEASE From 13 June to 27 September 2015 , Mons Memorial Museum hosts its first temporary exhibition, One number, one destiny. Serving Napoleon . In a unique visitor experience , the exhibition offers a chance to relive the practice of conscription as used during the period of French rule from the Battle of Jemappes (1792) to the Battle of Waterloo (1815). This first temporary exhibition expresses the desire of the new military history museum of the City of Mons to focus on the visitor experience . The conventional setting of the chronological historical exhibition has been abandoned in favour of a far more personal immersion . The basic idea is to give visitors a sense of the huge impact of conscription on the lives of people at the time. With this in mind, each visitor will draw a number by lot to decide whether or not he or she has been ‘conscripted’, and so determine the route taken through the exhibition – either the section presenting the daily existence of conscripts recruited to serve under the French flag, or that focusing on life for the civilians who stayed at home . Visitors designated as conscripts will find out, through poignant letters, objects and other exhibits, about the lives of the soldiers – many of them ill-fated – as they made their way right across Europe in the fight against France’s enemies. Meanwhile, visitors in the other group will learn how those who stayed behind in Mons saw their daily lives turned upside-down by the numerous reforms introduced under the French, including the adoption of a new calendar, the eradication of references to religion, the acquisition of the right to vote, access to a new economic market and exposure to new cultural influences.
