Next, a roadside Monhingha shop, which, however, was known to be in the list of pioneers of the town, asked us to hold our horses as the broth had ran out. A moment later, a trishaw came with many plastic bags, each holding Monhingha broth – boiling hot – all of which was eventually poured down into the large bowl. In the Hledan market, a wholesaling shop that sells fried vermicelli and fried noodles adds the entire packet of Ajinomoto, the seasoning powder, into a giant frying pan. Those noodles and vermicelli are sold to the other shops retailing various salads, pork on stick, and so on. -

-1- Nationalism by Design: The Politics of Dress in British Burma By Penny Edwards. IIAS Newsletter 46 (Winter 2008). Colonial attempts to hem in racial and gender difference through practice, law and lore made dress a potent field of resistance in British Burma, giving rise to new strands of nationalism by design. On 22 November 1921, a young male named Maung Ba Bwa was apprehended by police at the ShwedaGon PaGoda in RanGoon. MaunG Ba Bwa was one of an unusually hiGh number of Burmans visitinG the paGoda on this November evening for an exhibition of weaving, and a performance of a phwe (Burmese traditional theatre) by two leadinG artists. In MaunG Ba Bwa’s recollection of events, “his attire” had attracted police attention. “He was wearinG a pinni jacket and Yaw longyi, obviously rather self-consciously and in demonstration of his nationalist sympathies,” stated the resultant police report; “He seems, possibly not without reason, to think that some Government officers reGard such clothes with disapproval.” MaunG Ba Bwa was brouGht in for questioninG followinG the storminG of the ShwedaGon by British and Indian police, when Gurkhas “desecrated the paGoda by rushing up the steps with their boots on.” In the ensuinG fracas, which pitted monks aGainst such colonial aGents of ‘order,’ a Burmese civilian was killed. The scholar- official J. S. Furnivall, who presided over an independent commission of inquiry into the police response, would also pin his diaGnosis of Maung Ba Bwa’s political orientation on his wardrobe. His pinni jacket and his longyi, the commission reported, were proof positive of his “nationalist sentiment.”1 Wearing your politics on your sleeve By the early 1920s, in a climate where speakinG out or publishinG critiques of colonialism saw some younG monks and other activists jailed for years, increasinG numbers of Burmese civilians -- like MaunG Ba Bwa -- chose to express their political leaninGs in their dress. -

After a discussion of how Beckett’s own practice might be seen as intermedial, the essay analyses the 1996 American Repertory Company programme Beckett Trio, a staging of three of Beckett’s television plays which incorporated live camera projected onto a large screen in a television studio. The second case study analyses Company SJ’s 2014 stage adaptation of a selection of Beckett’s prose texts, Fizzles, in a historic site-specific location in inner city Dublin, which incorporated projected sequences previously filmed in a different location. -

Here in the good old days the Babas paved a legend on the landscape, and sang their part – God save the King – in trembling voices. Till the Great Wars came and the glory went, and the memories grave as a museum. Ah, if only our children on the prestige of their pedigree would emulate their fathers, blaze another myth across the teasing wilderness of this Golden Peninsula. Ee Tiang Hong, Tranquerah (1985) ! i! Preface and Acknowledgements ! This is a story that weaves together many narratives. First, it is a story of how members of a specific Peranakan organisation gathered annually to stage a theatrical production showcasing aspects of their culture. It is also a story of an endeavour to resuscitate the Peranakan community’s flagging fortunes and combat an increasing apathy among its young – which by the 1980s had become leitmotifs defining the state of the community; Ee Tiang Hong’s poem on the previous page is hence an appropriate epigraph. This thesis further tells a story about an iconic performance art situated, and intertwined, within a larger narrative of 1980s Singapore socio-political realities; how did it depict the Peranakan cultural heritage while at the same time adapting its presentation to fit the context? Who was involved in the production, what were the challenges its scriptwriters and directors faced and how did its audience respond to the performance? These are but some questions we will address as the story unfolds. -

A RELATIONAL GEOGRAPHY OF HERITAGE IN POST-1997 HONG KONG by Lachlan Barber B.A., The University of King’s College, 2004 M.A., The University of British Columbia, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Geography) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July 2014 © Lachlan Barber, 2014 Abstract The central question of this dissertation is: what can Hong Kong teach us about the geography of heritage? The study considers the discursive transformation of cultural heritage as a feature of Hong Kong’s transition since the 1997 retrocession to Chinese sovereignty. Specifically, it traces the contradictory growth of interest in heritage as an urban amenity on the part of the government, and its simultaneous framing as a socio-political critique of neoliberal governance on the part of actors in civil society. The study analyses these dynamics from a perspective attentive to the relationships – forged through various forms of mobility and comparison – between Hong Kong and other places including mainland China, Great Britain, and urban competitors. The project relies on data gathered through English-language research conducted over a period of two and a half years. Sixty in-depth interviews were carried out with experts, activists, professionals and politicians in Hong Kong. Extensive surveys of government documents, the print and online media, and archival materials were undertaken. Other methods employed include site visits and participant observation. The methodology was oriented around the analysis of processes of heritage policy and contestation over a number of sites in Central, Hong Kong and surrounding districts where contradictory visions of the meaning of heritage have played out materially.
