th nd 15 – 22 March, 2013 www.howellsth -cardiff.gdst.net www.howells-cardiff.gdst.net 24 September, 2010 Last Friday, Years 8 & 9 attended talks by leading authors and journalists as part of the Hay Festival Scribblers’ Tour and this week we were delighted to welcome Cathy Cassidy, a best-selling author, to Howell’s. Charity has had a high profile this week, with Rotary Interact electing its new committee, a sweet sale for Chernobyl Cancer Care Cardiff and a Fancy Dress Zumba for the British Heart Foundation. We also hosted a coffee morning today in aid of Velindre where a number of the students performed. Our guests were extremely impressed with the high quality of the musical performances. Our grateful thanks to the kitchen staff who helped enormously with this event and last week’s Pink Vintage Tea for Breast Cancer Care. In sport, we have had netball, hockey and lacrosse playing various fixtures around the country and the Silver Duke of Edinburgh had a challenging practice expedition to the Brecon Beacons last weekend. With one more week to go until Easter, I know everyone is working hard. My thanks to the Year 10 parents and their daughters who joined us for Revision Breakfasts this week. I do hope they were helpful and that everyone with examinations this summer has a productive time revising and preparing for examinations over the Easter break. A series of lectures by leading academics gave students the most up to date insights into key areas of German history which form a large part of their A2 examination. The conference began with Dame Ruth Hening, who delivered a very clear summary the key events of the Weimar Republic. CHARITY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY On Friday, 8th March, Howell’s raised £1,700 for Breast Cancer Care with a ‘Pink Vintage Tea’. The Great Hall was packed full of alumnae, governors, current Junior and Senior School parents and friends of Breast Cancer Care. Beth, Alena and Claire did voluntary work in the summer Rotary Celebration of International Women’s Day camp last year, and several Howell’s College students will be helping out this summer, either in childcare or in carrying out essential maintenance. Page 4 15th – 22nd March, 2013 www.howells-cardiff.gdst.net Library News POPULAR AUTHOR AND ‘QUEEN OF TEEN’, CATHY CASSIDY HAY FESTIVAL SCRIBBLERS TOUR VISITS HOWELL’S SCHOOL We were delighted to welcome best-selling author and ‘Queen of Teen’, Cathy Cassidy to Howell’s to talk to Howell’s students and our guests from local schools. We celebrated World Book Day in style by taking Year 8 & 9 to Cardiff University for the Hay Festival Scribblers Tour. The event is all about getting young people thinking and writing creatively with talks and workshops with popular authors Each young person is given a special 'Scribblers notebook' which they fill with writing on the day, and The sports hall was buzzing with excitement as it filled up take home to keep. with over 300 girls and boys all hoping to get to talk to Cathy and get their books signed. The huge queue of students waiting to get their books signed and to chat to Cathy, spoke volumes about her popularity. The students loved the personalised messages and fun doodles that Cathy put in each book. We are massively thankful to Cathy and her assistant, Jodie for spending so much time with the students and to Waterstones for selling Cathy’s books at the event.
