  • CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples.

  • 8 Redefining Zorro: Hispanicising the Swashbuckling Hero
Redefining Zorro: Hispanicising the Swashbuckling Hero Victoria Kearley Introduction Such did the theatrical trailer for The Mask of Zorro (Campbell, 1998) proclaim of Antonio Banderas’s performance as the masked adventurer, promising the viewer a sexier and more daring vision of Zorro than they had ever seen before. This paper considers this new image of Zorro and the way in which an iconic figure of modern popular culture was redefined through the performance of Banderas, and the influence of his contemporary star persona, as he became the first Hispanic actor ever to play Zorro in a major Hollywood production. It is my argument that Banderas’s Zorro, transformed from bandit Alejandro Murrieta into the masked hero over the course of the film’s narrative, is necessarily altered from previous incarnations in line with existing Hollywood images of Hispanic masculinity when he is played by a Hispanic actor. I will begin with a short introduction to the screen history of Zorro as a character and outline the action- adventure hero archetype of which he is a prime example. The main body of my argument is organised around a discussion of the employment of three of Hollywood’s most prevalent and enduring Hispanic male types, as defined by Latino film scholar, Charles Ramirez Berg, before concluding with a consideration of how these ultimately serve to redefine the character. Who is Zorro? Zorro was originally created by pulp fiction writer, Johnston McCulley, in 1919 and first immortalised on screen by Douglas Fairbanks in The Mark of Zorro (Niblo, 1920) just a year later.

By L. Frank Baum With Music and Lyrics of the MGM motion picture score By Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg Background Music by Herbert Stothart Dance and Vocal Arrangements by Peter Howard Adapted by John Kane from the motion picture screenplay By arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York Chairperson’s Message Welcome to the Mercury Theatre and thank you for supporting CO2’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Societies like ourselves are finding it more and more difficult to find a show to perform that is not only suitable but has a fairly large cast. We become very frustrated when we hit upon a show only to find that the performance rights are not available. Last year’s production, Little Shop of Horrors was written for a cast of 10 but our production team managed to make it work with a cast of 40. I must congratulate them as we were awarded the NODA Best Musical in Area 11 in addition to Will Mugford who played Seymour being voted Best Young Actor in Area 11, so congratulations to all involved CO2 has performed The Wiz, a more upbeat production, but we thought this year we would produce what has become the classic MGM story as produced on stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company. So, no pressure on our production team who have enjoyed working with our cast of very talented youngsters, and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have helped with this production of The Wizard of Oz, plus the CO2 Committee for all their support, and you our audience who we continually rely upon to make this possible.

MAY 2011 MAY MAY 2011 Issue 79 q comment: INTERPRIDE and PMV As you may be aware, four years ago Pride March Victoria decided to re-engage with the International Publisher & Editor Brett Hayhoe body - InterPride - and play our part on the world +61 (0) 422 632 690 stage. At that very first AGM and World Conference [email protected] that both myself (as Secretary of Pride March Victoria) and the Treasurer attended with me being elected to Editorial the Board prior to my flight back to Australia. This [email protected] commenced a time in my life where I was having to Sales and Marketing attend two meetings a year in some location around [email protected] the world. At last year’s AGM and World Conference I was elected Secretary of the International body with Design Adam Lowe being elected as the Board Director for Uncle Brett Designs & Graphics Region 20 (the region in which Australia is placed). Contributing Writers Pete Dillon, Evan Davis, Alan Mayberry, Despite those who claim it is simply an excuse to fly Tasman Anderson, Marc J Porter, Barrie overseas, the work of InterPride is very real and does Mahoney, Brett Hayhoe, Ashley Hogan, Brian Mier, Chris Gregoriou, Nathan Miller, make a difference in many many ways. I am personally Amanda Nassif very proud of the work the organisation does - both as an organisation and through our many member Cover picture organisations around the globe. • The American Dahlia Society – the Second 50 Years
THE AMERICAN DAHLIA SOCIETY The Second 50 Years. "To stimulate interest in, and promote the culture and development of the Dahlia." CoMPILED BY HARRY R1.,,-o 1 Copyright© 2015 by The American Dahlia Society All rights reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, without permission from The American Dahlia Society. ISBN 978-0-692-52512-8 First addition, Parrot Press 2 Introduction In the beginning there was The Golden Year Dahlia Record, published in 1964, in anticipation of the AD S's Golden Anniversary in 1965. At 52 over-size pages, the publication by Lynn Dudley is a master piece of history, insight, and entertainment. When I first took on the assignment of organizing The American Dahlia Society the Second Fifty Years, I conceived a parallel publication in the same format. As the months went along, I concluded that I am not Lynn Dudley, and sequels usually disappoint. In looking for a different direction, I discovered that there was a wealth of history, insight and entertain ment in the last 50 years of the ADS Bulletins. The stories of the American Dahlia Society, the dahlia and the dahlia's people were right there. From that point forward, this publication virtually wrote itself. It is organized by year. There are no long lists or es says. Rather it is a buffet of tidbits-dim sum or tapas--of information that presents the ADS, the flower, and its people for your enjoyment. It is not intended to be read in one sitting, but rather, like an almanac to be visited from time to time.
