Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

It is hard to ignore the menace in the name, the morbid delight one gets in pronouncing a name that is riddled with such meaning. At some level, human society is fascinated with the notion of a vampire: a revenant that ret urns from beyond the grave to extract the blood of the living in order to extend its unholy life. It plays on our basic fears as humans, the fear of the dead, the fear of dying, the fear of the unknown, and a fascination with this substance consisting of p lasma, platelets, and cells that runs through our veins. Bram Stoker took all of these fears to new heights when he wrote Dracula , one of the most enduring horror stories to ever be composed. The novel has generated enormous criticism that has chiefly been divided into the camps of Irishness, colonialism/imperialism, and sexuality. Whether it was intentional or not, Stoker’s novel is a breeding ground for almost every sexual fetish, deviance, and perversion that is known to mankind. Characters in the novel engage in mutilation, blood-drinking, perverted fellation, sexual acts in front of their spouse, female domination, male domination, group rape, homosexuality, male penetration, and sadomasochism.

Chavez Ave. in East Los Angeles in the 1990s Abstract Key Words: Commemorative Memorial, Multiethnic, Representation, Boyle Heights, Civic Memory In East Los Angeles during 1994, the Jewish Historical Society of Southern California (J.H.S.) and the concerned citizens of Sunset Boulevard circulated petitions to halt the name change of Brooklyn, Macy, and a portion of Sunset to Cesar E. Chavez Avenue that had been initiated by the City Council. The idea that history itself could be erased was a prominent point of contention along with potential economic hardships that would be acquired by small businesses in the affected areas. Nevertheless, supporters in the community and the City Council insisted it was crucial to properly honor Cesar Chavez and provide a "positive role model" to the existing Latino population. Street names play a significant role in the way residents understand their local histories; this is especially the case in Boyle Heights, a multiethnic neighborhood in East Los Angeles. Commemorative memorials and signage can influence civic memory through the presentation and performance of knowledge by framing and deploying history. However, the process of framing history involves highlighting specific historical events while simultaneously ignoring others. Karen is a 12-time MAC Award recipient, including the 2018 MAC Award for Major Recording (Karen’s newest single, “It’s About Time”); the 2016 MAC Award for Best Show (Mason’s Makin’ Music); and winner of the MAC Award for Major Female Vocalist of the Year for six consecutive years. She has also won the 2006 Nightlife Award for Major Female Vocalist and has three Bistro Awards. Ms. Mason was recently seen as “Madame Giry” in the North American Premier of LOVE NEVER DIES — Andrew Lloyd Webber’s epic sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. Previously on Broadway, she garnered rave reviews starring as “The Queen of Hearts” in WONDERLAND and she originated the role of “Tanya” in Abba’s MAMMA MIA! For her portrayal of “Tanya,” Ms. Mason was awarded a 2002 Drama Desk nomination as Best Actress. Regional Setting The project site is located in Los Angeles County, in the Hollywood community of the City of Los Angeles (the “City”) (see Section II [Project Description], Figure II-1 [Regional and Project Vicinity Map]). The project site is also located within the Hollywood Redevelopment Project Area and the Vermont/Western Station Neighborhood Area Plan (SNAP) Specific Plan. Regional access to the project site is provided via the Hollywood Freeway (US-101), located less than one half mile east of the project site, the Harbor Freeway (SR-110), located 4.2 miles northwest of the project site, and the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10), located 4.2 miles north of project site. Hollywood Boulevard to the north, Western Avenue to the east, Santa Monica Boulevard to the south, and Vine Street to the west serve as the primary arterial roadways providing access to the area surrounding the project site. The project site spans across an entire block on Sunset Boulevard between Western Avenue and St. Andrews Place and is bounded by Sunset Boulevard to the north, St. Andrews Place to the west, De Longpre Avenue to the south, and Western Avenue to the east.
