  • Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State
Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State By Neil Grant Landers A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in French in the GRADUATE DIVISION of the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Committee in charge: Professor Debarati Sanyal, Co-Chair Professor Soraya Tlatli, Co-Chair Professor Karl Britto Professor Stefania Pandolfo Fall 2013 1 Abstract of the Dissertation Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State by Neil Grant Landers Doctor of Philosophy in French Literature University of California, Berkeley Professor Debarati Sanyal, Co-Chair Professor Soraya Tlatli, Co-Chair Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State addresses the way the Algerian civil war has been portrayed in 1990s novelistic literature. In the words of one literary critic, "The Algerian war has been, in a sense, one big murder mystery."1 This may be true, but literary accounts portray the "mystery" of the civil war—and propose to solve it—in sharply divergent ways. The primary aim of this study is to examine how three of the most celebrated 1990s novels depict—organize, analyze, interpret, and "solve"—the civil war. I analyze and interpret these novels—by Assia Djebar, Yasmina Khadra, and Boualem Sansal—through a deep contextualization, both in terms of Algerian history and in the novels' contemporary setting. This is particularly important in this case, since the civil war is so contested, and is poorly understood. Using the novels' thematic content as a cue for deeper understanding, I engage through them and with them a number of elements crucial to understanding the civil war: Algeria's troubled nationalist legacy; its stagnant one-party regime; a fear, distrust, and poor understanding of the Islamist movement and the insurgency that erupted in 1992; and the unending, horrifically bloody violence that piled on throughout the 1990s.

  • Arab-African Migrant Literature a Dissertation
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Clandestine Mediterranean: Arab-African Migrant Literature A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Nahrain Al-Mousawi 2012 © Copyright by Nahrain Al-Mousawi 2012 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Clandestine Mediterranean: Arab-African Migrant Literature by Nahrain Al-Mousawi Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature University of California, Los Angeles, 2012 Professor Saree Makdisi, Chair Professor Gil Hochberg, Chair Clandestine migration from North Africa across the Mediterranean has been explored widely as a topic in the fields of social science in the past decade, but representations of undocumented migration in literature have not been subject to significant attention and analysis. Moreover, in comparison to French, Italian, or Spanish literature, Arabic clandestine migrant literature has barely been subject to recognition or discussion. Even though this dissertation includes some Anglophone literature, by and large, its main attention to Arabic literature addresses the dearth in scholarship on contemporary Arabic literary representations of clandestine migration from Egypt and Morocco, as well as trans-migration from sub-Saharan Africa. My analysis of literature charting journeys from the Mediterranean’s southern shores and rendering clandestine existence in the global North attempts to contribute to not only the discourse on migration literature but on conceptualizations of the Mediterranean as both a dividing border and unifying contact zone, ii especially vital to the contemporary recurrence of the study of seas and particularly the Mediterranean. My discussion encompasses Arabic literature by Moroccan author Rachid Nini and Egyptian author Khaled Al-Khameesy, as well as Anglophone literature by Moroccan- American author Laila Lalami and Nigerian-American author Sefi Atta.

FROM MUSE TO MILITANT: FRANCOPHONE WOMEN NOVELISTS AND SURREALIST AESTHETICS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Mary Anne Harsh, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Danielle Marx-Scouras, Advisor Professor Karlis Racevskis ______________________________ Advisor Professor Sabra Webber French and Italian Graduate Program ABSTRACT In 1924, André Breton launched the Surrealist movement in France with his publication of Manifeste du surréalisme. He and his group of mostly male disciples, prompted by the horrors of World War I, searched for fresh formulas for depicting the bizarre and inhumane events of the era and for reviving the arts in Europe, notably by experimenting with innovative practices which included probing the unconscious mind. Women, if they had a role, were viewed as muses or performed only ancillary responsibilities in the movement. Their participation was usually in the graphic arts rather than in literature. However, in later generations, francophone women writers such as Joyce Mansour and Suzanne Césaire began to develop Surrealist strategies for enacting their own subjectivity and promoting their political agendas. Aside from casual mention, no critic has formally investigated the surreal practices of this sizeable company of francophone women authors. I examine the literary production of seven women from three geographic regions in order to document the enduring capacity of surrealist practice to express human experience in the postcolonial and postmodern era. From the Maghreb I analyze La Grotte éclatée by Yamina Mechakra and L'amour, la fantasia by Assia Djebar, and from Lebanon, L'Excisée by Evelyne Accad.

  • The Complexity of Sociolinguistic Situation in Algeria: Case Study of Superior School of Applied Sciences- Tlemcen
Proceedings of SOCIOINT 2019- 6th International Conference on Education, Social Sciences and Humanities 24-26 June 2019- Istanbul, Turkey THE COMPLEXITY OF SOCIOLINGUISTIC SITUATION IN ALGERIA: CASE STUDY OF SUPERIOR SCHOOL OF APPLIED SCIENCES- TLEMCEN Nouzha Yasmina Soulimane-Benhabib Dr, Superior School of Applied Sciences, Tlemcen-Algeria, [email protected] Abstract The aim of this paper is to examine the sociolinguistic situation in Algeria. It is known that Algeria is multilingual with different dialects spoken throughout the country. The mother tongue is Arabic (dialectal), the first foreign language is French and the second foreign language is English. Therefore, from the primary school to the baccalaureate, young Algerians study all the modules in Arabic, after getting their baccalaureate exam, and entering the superior school, they study all the modules in French in addition to English which is taught as a compulsory course starting from the first year middle school. Therefore, the sociolinguistic situation in Algeria is considered as very rich and complex. This investigation takes place in the superior school of applied sciences-Tlemcen, where two groups of forty students participated in this research work. Two steps are followed in this research work, the first step is to collect data under questionnaires and interviews are added to this research work in order to reinforce our research and get fruitful results from the students. The second step is to analyse these data taking into consideration the linguistic background of the students from the primary school to superior school of Applied Sciences. The results obtained demonstrate that the complexity is reflected in historical causes as for the learning of French as a second language which is due to the long period of French colonialism which lasted 132 years.

Página 1 de 10 Revista Transcultural de Música Transcultural Music Review #11 (2007) ISSN:1697-0101 People and sounds”: Filming African music between visual anthropology and television documentary Leonardo D'Amico Università di Ferrara Università di Siena Abstract Watching music, and not only listening to or writing about it, is a priority to deepen in the knowledge of traditional music both in Europe and elsewhere. Since visual anthropology was born, there have been different ways to convey this idea. Through a review of the documentary films produced from the fifties until the present time, the paper shows the historical changes on the film industry priorities with regard to world music portrayals. The dialectal tension between fictional and ethnographic approaches has been a constant. This paper supports the premise that auteur films can reach ethnomusicological level, although not being scientific, and have an added poetical value of great help in this field.

The most significant news is the program’s receipt of U.S. Department of Education Title VI funding in 2018-22 as a National Resource Center (NRC) for Africa and as a recipient of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for our students. I was hopeful, when I returned to the director’s position in summer 2015, that the program could address the unprecedented loss of the NRC grant in 2014 with a return to funding in the next cycle.
