In the summer months, gymnasts would practice their acrobatic feats over water in front of appreciative crowds. This led to diving being recognised as a sport in the nineteenth century. Diving Today Diving today is a very popular sport with up to 40 countries participating at the international level. In addition to the Olympic Games, Diving is also takes place at the World Championships every two years, alongside Swimming, Synchronized swimming and Waterpolo. The Diving World Cup is also held every two years. The Junior World Championships are held on an annual basis and involve divers competing in the 14/15 year and 16-18 year age group. In recent years, China has taken over from the United States as the top diving nation, winning three of the four gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Atlanta was also the first Games in 84 years in which the USA team failed to win a gold medal in any diving event, where Russia won the only other available gold. Diving at the Olympic Games Diving first featured on the Olympic program in St Louis in 1904 when a platform event and a plunge for distance event were conducted for men. The plunge for distance event has never again been featured at an Olympic Games. Men's springboard was added to the Olympic diving program in London in 1908, while women's platform was included in Stockholm in 1912 and women's springboard in Antwerp in 1920. The recent addition of synchronized diving for the 2000 Games is the first change in the Olympic diving program since the Paris Olympic Games in 1924. The entire Olympic program now consists of the ten metre platform and three metre springboard for men and women and synchronized ten metre platform and synchronized three metre springboard for men and women - a total of eight medal events. Diving in Australia Although dozens of Australians have dived at the Olympic Games, only Richmond 'Dick' Eve has won an Olympic medal. Eve won the gold in the Olympic plain diving event in the Paris 1924 Olympic Games, where he also finished fifth in the springboard event. The governing body for the sport of diving in Australia is Diving Australia. Their head office is based in Brisbane at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Chandler, Queensland. The Association was incorporated in 1980 as the Australian Amateur Diving Association Inc. and has undergone two name changes, first to the Australian Diving Association in 1982 an finally to Diving Australia in early 2000. Registered participants currently number approximately 2 500.

  • 5 China Dreaming
5 China Dreaming Representing the Perfect Present, Anticipating the Rosy Future Stefan Landsberger Abstract As China has developed into a relatively well-offf, increasingly urbanized nation, educating the people has become more urgent than ever. Rais- ing (human) quality (素质) has become a major concern for educators and intellectuals who see moral education as a major task of the state. The visual exhortations in public spaces aimed at moral education are dominated by dreaming about a nation that has risen and needs to be taken seriously. The visualization of these dreams resembles commercial advertising, mixing elements like the Great Wall or the Tiananmen Gate building with modern or futuristic images. This chapter focuses on posters, looking at the changes in contents and representation of government visuals in an increasingly urbanized and media-literate society. Keywords: visual propaganda; governmentality; normative propaganda; Chinese Dream; Beijing Olympics 2008 Sometimes one still encounters hand-painted faded slogans in the coun- tryside urging those working in agriculture to learn from Dazhai, or to energetically study Mao Zedong Thought. By and large, political messages and the images they use have disappeared from Chinese public spaces, in particular in urban areas. Yet, the production of these images, of what we would call propaganda, has not stopped; the government remains com- mitted to educating the people, as it has over the millennia. Compared to the fijirst three decades of the People’s Republic, the messages have shifted to moral and normative topics, and their visualization has become much more sophisticated than in the earlier periods. This is partly because they Valjakka, Minna & Wang, Meiqin (eds.), Visual Arts, Representations and Interventions in Contemporary China: Urbanized Interface.

Facts about women's springboard Olympic champions 17:20, August 17, 2008 Beijing is to witness a tough battle for historic gold in women's 3m springboard on Sunday evening. Chinese overwhelming favorite Guo Jingjing is set to defend her Olympic title while setting the record as the first-ever to win back-to-back gold in both synchro and individual events. Here are some basic facts about winners of the event in previous five Olympics. -- Gao Min, springboard champion of the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games. Nicknamed "Diving Queen", Gao is one of the most dominant divers in the history of the sport. Undefeated in world competitions on the 3m springboard between 1986 and 1992, she claimed Olympic titles in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Born in September 1970 in China's Sichuan Province, Gao started swimming at four, and turned to diving at nine. She won her first major international competition on the 3m springboard in the World Championships in 1986. Gao tied the legendary Greg Louganis by receiving the most international awards on one springboard. The two-time Olympic champion is also the first female diver to surpass 600-points score in the event, and she did it three times. Gao was chosen as the World's Best Diver of the Year by the U.S. magazine Swimming World from 1987 to 1989 and the Woman's World Springboard Diver of the Year for a record seven consecutive years from 1986 to 1992. -- Fu Mingxia, 10m platform champion of 1992 Olympics, both 10m platform and 3m springboard winner in 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and springboard winner of Sydney Games.
