Además de apoyar a jóvenes músicos, Abbado dedicó un especial interés en promover que los jóvenes austriacos pudieran tocar con sus colegas de las repúblicas socialistas de Checoslovaquia y Hungría. De este modo, la GMJO fue la primera orquesta internacional de jóvenes que ofreció audiciones abiertas en los países del antiguo bloque del Este. En 1992, la Orquesta se abrió a músicos de hasta veintiséis años provenientes de toda Europa. Cuenta con el patronazgo del Consejo Europeo. Su repertorio en gira abarca desde la música clásica hasta la contemporánea, con especial énfasis en las grandes obras sinfónicas de los períodos romántico y romántico tardío. Su alto nivel artístico y reconocimiento internacional han atraído a muchos de los más importantes directores y solistas a colaborar con la orquesta. Béla Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2 was written in the depressing period preceding the outbreak of WW2, and it is the last work of the composer written prior to his emigration to the USA. For Johannes Brahms the way to symphonic genre was thorny; the German author finished his first sym- phony as a 40-year-old man. After this “debut” he plucked up courage and his Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 abounds with cheerfulness and fresh invention. Slovak Philharmonic led by its music director James Judd welcomes the French violinist Renaud Capuçon at the festival’s opening concert. The violinist has a number of admirers in Bratislava; he excels at convincing moulding of contrasts of “understated tenderness and charming daring” (New York Times).

Eller´s legacy is twofold – in his prolific instrumental compositions he forged an elaborate style that successfully combined both modern and national elements, and as a prominent professor of composition during half a century he influenced generations of Estonian composers, amongst them Eduard Tubin (1905–1982) Arvo Pärt (b. 1935) and Lepo Sumera (1950–2000). Eller´s best known composition, Kodumaine viis (‘Homeland tune’) for string orchestra, rose to prominence during the 1950s and 1960s as the chief vehicle for expressing national feelings and identity under Soviet occupation. The work remains to this day an instrumental equivalent of a national anthem, in its importance bearing comparison to Jean Sibelius´s Finlandia. In the independent Estonia of the 1920s and 1930s Eller was considered the leading modernist of the country, and his music was extolled for its novelty and technical prowess. In 1925 the founding father of modern musicology, prof. Guido Adler from the Vienna University attested to Eller´s music being the continuation of Grieg´s ‘Northern style’ and a successful synthesis of impressionism and expressionism.

MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL Recordings Of The Year 2020 This is the eighteenth year that MusicWeb International has asked its reviewing team to nominate their recordings of the year. Reviewers are not restricted to discs they had reviewed, but the choices must have been reviewed on MWI in the last 12 months (December 2019-November 2020). The 146 selections have come from 28 members of the team and 69 different labels, the choices reflecting as usual, the great diversity of music and sources; I say that every year, but still the spread of choices surprises and pleases me. Of the selections, ten have received two nominations: • Eugene Ormandy’s Saint-Saëns Organ symphony on Dutton • Choral music by Jančevskis on Hyperion • Stephen Hough’s Beethoven concertos on Hyperion • Lutosławski symphonies on Ondine • Stewart Goodyear’s Beethoven concertos on Orchid Classics • Maria Gritskova’s Prokofiev Songs and Romances on Naxos • Giandrea Noseda’s Dalapiccola Il Priogioniero on Chandos • Les Kapsber'girls Che fai tù? on Muso • Edward Gardner’s Peter Grimes on Chandos • Véronique Gens recital Nuits on Alpha Hyperion was this year’s leading label with 16 nominations, and Chandos with 11 deserves an honourable mention.
