Les Pénélopes editorial We have become aware of the ways in which cyberfeminism has become an influence within discursive fields of gender studies, media the- ory, political theory and action, concepts in art etc. and hope to contribute to the rise of cyber- feminist works and studies. Cyberfeminism is not merely enacted in these regions, the input of cyberfeminism alters the fields themselves and affects our attempt to map them and our activities within them. The term cyberfeminism literally means ‘feminism in relation to digital media’. As you will see in these articles, cyber- feminism is many things to many people, and we will not attempt to give a concise definition of it here. The volume should serve as an initial orienta- tion within the diverse territory of cyberfemi- nism. The field is still in the process of defining itself, as is proper for any new discipline. The articles in this collection, although widely divergent in areas of inquiry, all mark areas where cyberfeminism has altered or undermi- ned the basis of disciplinary practices and cul- tural analysis. This reader is the extended product of the conference ‘very cyberfeminist international’ held in Hamburg 2001 by OBN. Starting out as a documentation of the ‘very cyberfeminist international’ conference we have decided to include several new texts that were not presented at the conference in Hamburg, in order to broaden certain subjects. In the first section, ‘networking – knot working – not working?’, you will find selfrepre- sentations of networks, initiatives and institutions somehow or other alerting the reader to categories and concepts of networking. In the following section ‘ƒstart) ƒ(shut) ƒ(stop) ƒ(open) = new border concepts’, essays provide various aspects of borders, between media and users, between wishes and facts, science and fiction, between today and tomorrow – dealing with, defining or researching problems and/or promises. With the section ‘the borders of terror – media- and war techniques’ we focussed on the changes in global politics and war techniques triggered by the events of September 11 last year, concentrating on their consequences for women. For OBN crisis voyeurs we recommend the final section ‘obn’s principle of disagree- ment’. The selection of cyberfeminists included in this reader is, obviously, far from compre- hensive. For additional reading and information see the catalogue of the exhibition ‘cyberfem spirit – spirit of data’ at the Edith Russ Site for Media Art in Oldenburg and the book ‘technics of cyber<>feminism <mode=message>’, continuing the work of the Thealit lab on cyberfeminist theory.1 Thanks to the contributors! It is not that I basically disagree with the ideas expressed there. I am still its author, and thus the situation is not comparable to that of The Church and the Second Sex, whose (1968) author I regard as a reformist foresister, and whose work I respectfully refute in the New Feminist Postchristian Introduction to the 1975 edition. Going beyond Beyond God the Father involves two things. First, there is the fact that be-ing continues. Be-ing at home on the road means continuing to Journey. This book continues to Spin on, in other directions/dimensions. It focuses beyond christianity in Other ways. Second, there is some old semantic baggage to be discarded so that Journeyers will be unencumbered by malfunctioning (male-functioning) equipment. There are some words which appeared to be adequate in the early seventies, which feminists later discovered to be false words. Three such words in BGTF which I cannot use again are God, androgyny, and homosexuality. There is no way to remove male/masculine imagery from God. Thus, when writing/speaking “anthropomorphically” of ultimate reality, of the divine spark of be-ing, I now choose to write/speak gynomorphically. I do so because God represents the necrophilia of patriarchy, whereas Goddess affirms the life-loving be-ing of women and nature. Et là, on se rend compte que le verbe entendre ne suffit déjà plus pour fixer cet instant. Disons alors l’aventure que fut « La bête ». Mais s’exposer au travers de cet artiste ce n’est pas invoquer Pierre Henry et son génie. Oui, osons ce terme puisque le prix l’indique déjà. Et Pierre Henry fait partie de ces rares personnes où les détours sont proscrits. Ainsi, n’en prenons pas pour « dire » et honorer son geste. Puisqu’avant même la musique, l’œuvre de Pierre Henry fut une nouvelle syntaxe, une grammaire peut-être, et toujours une absolue modernité. Pierre Henry arpente depuis des décennies un silence et on imagine qu’il lui rend ses bruits. Il est en quelque sorte son hors champs et sa quête. On suppose que sa musique procède d’une insuffisance plus que d’une insatisfaction. Il manque toujours quelque chose et à ce quelque chose. A ce manque Pierre Henry lui peint ses mots. N’est-ce pas le signe des créateurs de génie de nous emporter dans un autre langage, de nous détourner de notre imaginaire et ainsi de transformer notre vision du monde ? Et, de cette lumière aux allures de foudre, ce monde en a besoin.
