At North by North East, enjoy the French band The Sommaire Penelopes, while Luminato welcomes Amadou and Mariam, winners of two PAGE 4 ‐ Music Victoires de la Musique, during a unique free outdoor concert. The French band The Penelopes who will play on June 15 at 1pm at the Handle Bar in Kensington Market. After playing in both the rock and the electronic scenes and on a few singles and remixes (especially for DJ Hell's International DeeJay Gigolo Records), The Penelopes composed their first album The Arrogance of Simplicity in 2007, they won the Best Discovery 2007 Qwartz Electronic Music Award for this album. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CLICK HERE LUMINATO JUNE 14 ‐ 23 The Festival Luminato will take place in Toronto from June 14 to 23. Amadou and Mariam will give a concert on June 16 at 3pm at the Hub & David Pecaut Square. Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia, known as “the blind couple from Mali," are beyond category, serving up a mix of traditional Malian sounds, electric guitar, Cuban brass, Indian tablas, gutsy blues‐soaked vocals, dense African rhythms and pointed lyrics. After meeting as teenagers and marrying 32 years ago, the duo has circled the globe with their scintillating sound, sharing stages with Stevie Wonder and U2. Their latest album Folia features guest appearances by Santigold and the Scissors Sisters' Jake Shears following the massive success of Manu Chao's work on their album Dimanche a Bamako. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CLICK HERE 3 Visual Arts PARIS ‐ TORONTO: JIMMY ROBERT: JUNE 22 ‐ SEPTEMBER 22 DRAW THE LINE AU POWER PLANT French artist Jimmy Robert explores the corporeal potential of a range of media including photography, drawing, film, video, sculpture, and performance. In Draw the Line, presented at The Power Plant as part of Paris‐Toronto, Robert addresses questions of limits: of his body, of the media he uses, of our understanding of exhibitions and the various disciplines his work encompasses. Jimmy Robert's work has been presented in several solo exhibitions and festivals including Kaaitheater, Brussels (2013); MCA Chicago (2012); Teatro Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro (2012); Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2011); CCS Bard, New York (2011), to name a few ! He has received several international awards including the Follow Fluxus‐After Fluxus Grant (2009) and the Andrei and Nicholas Tooth Award (1999). For more information, click here WWW.PARIS‐TORONTO.ORG PARIS ‐ TORONTO : JUNE 25 ‐ AUGUST 29 MOHAMED BOUROUISSA IN RESIDENCE Mohamed Bourouissa will be in a residence at the Art Gallery of Ontario this summer as part of Paris‐Toronto. Mohamed Bourouissa is an acclaimed artist, well known for photographic work that has depicted the tensions and issues affecting daily life of young people living in the suburbs of France. His images have combined documentary‐style content with formal compositions influenced by traditional paintings by Caravaggio and Delacroix, among others. As the Artist‐in‐Residence at the AGO, he will have an opportunity to extend his practice by reflecting on the Toronto setting. Born in 1978, Mohamed Bourouissa works and lives in Paris. His work has been presented in a number of solo and group exhibitions at the Pompidou Centre, the Palais de Tokyo, the New Museum of contemporary art in New York, the Venice Biennale of contemporary art, among others. FOR MORE INFORMATION WWW.PARIS‐TORONTO.ORG 4 Visual Arts CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN RETROSPECTIVE JUNE 21 ‐ SEPTEMBER 15 The Design Exchange presents this summer an exhibition of Christian Louboutin's work. Curated by The Design Museum London in conjunction with Christian Louboutin, this exhibition presents the iconic French shoe designer, celebrating a career that has pushed the boundaries of high fashion shoe design. This exhibition celebrates Louboutin’s twenty years of designs and inspiration, revealing the artistry and theatricality of his shoe design from stilettos to lace‐up boots, studded sneakers and bejeweled pumps. Invitation to an immersion into the world of Louboutin, featuring exhibits from his personal atelier, iconic designs and one‐off creations, showcasing his masterful craftsmanship and use of unique materials. In 1996, Louboutin received a Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY) Award from the International Fashion Group ; in 2008, for the second time he received a FFANY. With this exhibiton Louboutin transformed London's Design Museum into a dream world for all shoe lovers. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CLICK HERE A BIT OF CLAY ON THE SKIN MAY 16 ‐ AUGUST 11 Presented at the Gardiner Museum, A Bit of Clay on the Skin: New ceramic jewellery explores the appeal of ceramics, especially porcelain, in jewellery. Organized by the Fondation d'entreprise Bernardaud (stemming from the renowned French ceramics company), and curated by goldsmith and jewellery artist Monika Brugger, the exhibition showcases the versatility and allure of the medium. The exhibition presents 140 works created by 18 cutting‐edge jewellery artists from around the world. Two French films will be presented for the opening and closing nights. A Lady in Paris by Ilmar Raag, starring Jeanne Moreau: Anne leaves Estonia to come to Paris as a caretaker for Frida, an elderly Estonian lady who emigrated to France long ago. The franco‐iranian movie A Respectable Family by Massoud Bakhshi tells the story of Arash, an Iranian academic who has been living in the West. He returns to teach in Chiraz, where his mother lives, far from Teheran. Caught up in a whirlwind of family and financial intrigues, he plunges back into a country for which he no longer has the codes. When his father dies and he discovers what has become of his "respectable family," he is obliged to make some difficult decisions. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CLICK HERE THE LOOKOUT JUNE 28 As part of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, The Lookout, starring Daniel Auteuil and Mathieu Kassovitz, will be screened on June 8 at 9.30pm at the TIFF Bell LightBox. Captain Mattei is about to arrest a notorious gang of bank robbers when a sniper hiding on the roof wounds a group of cops with the aim of allowing his accomplices to get away. One of the gang is severely wounded, obliging them to change their original plan. Hiding out at a corrupt doctor's place, the gang must divide up their loot. Captain Mattei organizes a huge manhunt, thereby driving the gang into a genuine descent into hell. On Tuesdays, "Women's gaze" will celebrate female directors with contemporary films awarded in the most important festivals such as The Girl from Monaco by Anne Fontaine on June 18, and Ceux qui restent by Anne Le Ny on June 25.
