11 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

First of all I would like to confirm that this is my last year in any official capacity at the BCC. I must admit, having experienced my first year in playing retirement I am very much looking forward to completing the full retirement from cricket by “hanging up” my committee involvement for season 10-11 onwards and spending more time with my family Kylie, Hayley, Heath & Georgia.

It has been an interesting 3 years as President and looking back the club has been able to progress really well that time.

Some of our important achievements over the last 3 years have been:  Winning an A-Grade Premiership in 08-09 and an Under 16 Premiership in 07-08;  Having the best playing surface (and clubrooms) of any club in the HDCA;  Hosting our first A-Grade Grand Final;  Growing our Juniors to 9 teams and a Milo Cricket group and providing greater integration between the Seniors and Juniors; and  Securing some fantastic sponsors and building relationships with those sponsors that hopefully will be long term

Thank you to all those coaches, captains, junior managers, players, general helpers and especially committee members who have helped maintain and improve the BCC over those years.

Looking forward the key focus areas for the club should be:  Upgrading the training nets, playing pitches and clubrooms – probably to 3-4 training nets given the growth of our Juniors, improved pitches to support skill development and improvements to the rooms that are now over 5 years old.  Maintaining and supporting our sponsors. Our sponsors provide significant cashflow and it is important that all at the club try and support our sponsors especially in difficult financial times. For example great people like Brad Fox from Total Financial Solutions (insurance and Financial services) and Daniel Sheean from Hocking Stuart (residential property sales and rentals) have put in a tremendous amount of funds to the BCC over the last few year and we haven‟t really provided them with enough value.  We don‟t have thousands to spend on bringing in new players – to be successful on the field we need to develop our own cricketers. This will include providing formal training to our coaches and captains who can then in turn train our cricketers. We also need to focus on development of cricketers to play Banyule A-Grade and not just to send off players to sub-district and district.

For 2009-10 I would like to thank: o Our first-year Senior Coach, Daniel Barnes and his helpers Ash Gannon, Darren Tindale, Shaun O‟Connor and Cameron Baker. Daniel showed enormous enthusiasm for the role and brought some strategic thinking to the player development. It is unfortunate that Daniel can‟t continue but as usual we will survive. Hopefully, Daniel, you can get your on-field performances back to 08-09 levels now you don‟t the added burden of Coach. o The Senior Captains for their work as the senior leadership group and for all their work including looking after the cricket kits, putting up shade tents, cleaning-up, attending the Thursday night selection meetings etc. o The best Junior Manager in the HDCA, Geoff Place (Jed), for another year of tireless work and countless hours spent organising our Junior programs o All the Junior coaches who volunteered some much time to training the junior players and managing match days. Their work is very much appreciated by all at Banyule. It is also great that we have a mix of current senior players and parents undertaking these roles o Brad Bowler who again coordinated and ran our Milo “In-2-Cricket” program which is developing our next generation of superstars o All our sponsors particularly our major sponsors:  Bendigo Bank, Hocking Stuart, Beck’s Bedding, Oak Builders, Brad Fox Financial Services; and The Tower Hotel o The BCC committee for their work this year and their dedication to the Banyule Cricket Club. o The non-committee members who helped many times this year particularly all the parents and families who provided meals for our Xmas party and for Junior function nights, Ralphy Kernaghan for all the photos he has taken of players and Ando for all his work in the canteen.

As this is it for me I would like to reflect on my time at Banyule which commenced in 87-88. I was lucky enough to: o play in 5 A-Grade premiership sides (and get carried in all bar one!!) o be captain of the 2‟s for 3 years which rekindled my love of playing cricket, o be given life membership to the BCC, o play with some of the best players ever to play at Banyule; and more importantly ; o enjoy the company of great characters who will each bring back memories of great games, fun times and great conversations.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT (cont.)

My final indulgence is to pick my ultimate teams (Banyule v the Rest of the HDCA) based on their performances whilst I was playing. I‟m not selecting myself but if they ever played I‟d be kicking someone out to make sure I got a game opening the batting with Macca or Ock.

BANYULE XII HDCA XII 1. Rod MCKINLAY - My favourite batsmen, would never 1. Glenn BUTTERWORTH (Keeper) (Greensborough) - throw his wicket away – his attitude was there was no Ex-Banyule - Best keeper that I‟ve played against. Very bowler who deserved to get him out. 2 x 200+ run solid bat occasionally brilliant. partnerships with me - 274 and a 228 in 94/95 GF. 1 A- grade premiership. 2. Brent O’CONNOR -Best all round player there has been 2. Jason NICHOLAS (Clifton Hill) - Hated getting out. One at the BCC. Great with bat, ball and in the field. Also a great who appeared to enjoy the challenge of facing Philo and leader – played the game hard. 3 A-Grade premierships. made some pretty good scores against us 3. Graham ANDERSON - Graceful bat, the Ian Chappell 3. David JONES (Rosanna) - Not a favourite of the type of player, who made big runs in big games. 100 in Banyule boys but he seemed to always make runs against 92/93 GF a highlight. 6 A-grade premierships us – especially in Grand Finals. 4. Wayne GIBSON (Keeper) - No better player to watch 4. Brad GRINDAL (Heidelberg) - Not pretty but a when in full flight. Uncompromising competitor (re: 00/01 champion player. Only Ronnie McKeown could hit the ball Grand Final v Banksia) harder. 5. Greg ANDERSON (Captain) - Great captain and leader 5. Kevin MCLAUGHLIN (Greensborough) - Just plus 11 A-Grade hundred and runs in big games. Has won 9 accumulated runs every time he batted. Was always the key A-Grade Premierships and has the A-Grade Grand Final wicket for Greensborough best player medal named after him. 6. Marty VEAL - Best natural talent. Great eye and great 6. Ron MCKEOWN (Bellfield) - Smashed the ball harder timing plus a brilliant fielder. Probably too good at too many then anyone. Was also a nasty bowler in the Brad Grindal sports. 4 A-Grade premierships mode. 7. Jeff WILSON - Great competitor - nasty at times - but he 7. Steve CASHEN (Heidelberg) (Captain) - Probably the was on my side. Could be brilliant with bat or ball. 3 A- best bat in the comp over in my time – just shading Macca. Grade premierships Great captain 8. Paul MCMURRAY - Fantastic bowler – quick and with 8. Peter MONAR (Greensborough) - Very good bat – movement. I loved that he could lift a cog when annoyed. although couldn‟t make runs against Banyule. Also great Also capable of a 50 or 100 with the bat. Great knock in 08- leggie – just shading Paul Duckworth during my time. 09 GF!! -1 A-Grade premiership 9. Peter GOULDING - Smart, accurate and had ultimate 9. Kane SHAW (Rosanna) - Leftie and probably the control over the ball. Gives us variety as left hand bowler hardest bowler I faced. Was fast, aggressive, unpredictable and has made A-Grade tons – and had district 1s and could move it a mile. Plus he bowled with the wrong experience. Class bloke. 5 A-Grade Premierships. arm! 10. Fraser NEILSON - Brilliant bowler, Had a change up in 10. Dale MCDONALD (Bellfield) - Fastest I faced and was pace (bit like Ocka) that would come out of nowhere. scarily unpredictable – shortballs could get around your Accurate and could get prodigious swing. 1 A-Grade ankles or your knees and bowled a mean bean-ball. premiership 11. Philip BARNES - Most influential player in my time – 11. Mick LEWIS (Rosanna) - He was a great bowler. won us countless games on his own. Most batsmen were Accurate and could bowl all day - if things went his way. Me scared witless at the thought of facing him. Better than Mick and Macca had our fair share of success against him but he Lewis. 5 A-Grade Premierships was the best I faced. 12th – Darren BUTTERWORTH - Shoulder and knee 12th Tony BALCOMBE (North Alphington) or Mark injuries cost him but from what I saw him before the knee PERKINS (Olympic Colts) injury he is in my best twelve. Could have been our best Both were great bats and have the distinction of being bowler ever. 4 A-Grade premierships. dropped by me and going on to make a hundred (in Or Tim VEAL – The Cashen-ball of the 98/99 Semi final Balcombe‟s case a 200). was the best ball I‟ve seen. Another great Banyule competitor. Played in 7 A-Grade premierships. UMPIRES Johnny DITCHAM & Smokey DAWSON – I enjoyed playing when they were umpiring

Anyway, all the very best to everyone for the future, especially the next President and committee and may the club win many more A-Grade flags. Just one final note – Good luck to Kym, Darren and Harvey Butterworth – hope everything goes well and keep in touch.

MARTIN PHILLIPS PRESIDENT

13 TREASURERS REPORT & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

The final result for the year ended 30 April 2010 was a surplus of $2,637. This is a solid result for the season highlighted by the following:

 $3,636 on the loan repayment to the council, for the renovations to the Merv Anderson Pavilion.  Fundraising was again disappointing. The social committee organised some new events as well as the old favourites, while all the events were fantastic the numbers attending were low.  With careful planning and management we were able to reduce the frequency of the cleaning and bar staff on the previous season  Balls were again a significant cost to the club with $4,504 being spent on match day and practice balls.  Utilities were again a major expenditure. With the size of the rooms and the frequency of the usage $3,878 was spent, the majority of this being for electricity.  Sponsorship continues to be a major source of income to the club of $9,798 an increase of $1,062 on last year. It was however reduced due to the club subsidising part of the cost of the new match day shirts.  Bar turnover was lower than previous seasons, with a profit of $10,096. It still maintained a 44% margin, consistent with other years.

The budget for the 2009/10 season was for a profit of $2,114. Although we have exceeded this budget, our turnover was lower than previous seasons.

Once again l thank our sponsors for their continued support of the club, it is very much appreciated. Welcome to new major sponsor, Bendigo Bank, who we look forward to having a long partnership with. Also special thanks to long term sponsors Beck‟s Bedding, Hocking Stuart, Total Financial Solutions and The Tower Hotel. Thanks to Daniel Barnes in his efforts in securing and maintaining our sponsors, he does a fantastic job.

Thanks to our social committee in Steve Pinner, Mick Asbury, Ryan Hartnett and Mick Delaney. A lot of work was put in to organising our events, the new comedy night and red carpet extravaganza were fantastic nights. It‟s a shame that these were not attended as well as they could have been. We will need our social events to be well supported over the next couple of years in order to cover some significant costs that are coming up.

Thanks to Scott Butler in his co-ordination of the bar/canteen. It takes a lot of work to get all this done and he also locks up most nights. Thanks to his helpers Ando, Plugga, Jed, Ash Barnes and Brian Smith.

Thanks to Phil Barnes for his work as secretary. Organising the insurance and general paperwork as well as all his other duties keeps us up to dates and keeps us out of paying fines (almost!).

Geoff Place does an amazing amount of work in running the juniors. As well as the co-ordination of the teams and coaches he collects all the membership and monies for clothing making my life much easier. Thanks once again Jed.

Thanks to our outgoing president in Marty Phillips. We spend a lot of time discussing what‟s happening in and around the club and he gives me valuable support. Thanks for all your work and support over the last 3 seasons, now you can fully enjoy your retirement!

The committee has already committed to significant expenditure for the next two seasons in a new sound system for the clubrooms and new training nets. We will need to raise significant funds to cover these costs. The committee will be looking at several different ways in doing this and will need everybody‟s support. The new nets will provided a significant increase in the standard of training the playing group receive and we should see this flow in to the results on the field

SOCIAL VP’S REPORT

Firstly, a big thanks you to Steve Pinner, Mick Asbury and Mick Delaney whom made up the social committee for the 09- 10 season, and to the remainder of the committee for all your hard work in helping to run and coordinate our functions, without your help, the fabulous events that we put on wouldn‟t get off the ground.

Where to start!

Highlights

HALLOWEEN NIGHT A fantastic social evening for the family with some great costumes trick or treat style! We had a fabulous night; some fabulous decorations turned the clubrooms into something resembling Luna Parks Ghost Train with the kids of the club enjoying a chocolate hunt on the oval amongst other things. Only complaint for the night came from the parents who said that the kids were too excited to sleep!

COMEDY NIGHT First time run and won‟t be the last time! Thanks especially to Steve Pinner for basically running the whole night! Well known local acts Tom Siegert, The Nelson Twins and Troy Kinne graced the BCC rooms and put on one hell of a show, having everyone in the rooms erupting in laughter, especially one Michael „rabbit‟ Johnson. An awesome night, one set to return over the 2010-2011 season.

RED CARPET COCKTAIL NIGHT Some classy get ups from BCC‟s finest members and some beautifully prepared and tasty cocktails on offer, if I do say so myself! Ando loved his Toblerones, Scotty „Pigeon‟ Clapton harassed, Marcus „Cheeze‟ Kernighan just kept returning to the bar for more and Sam Place and entourage burst onto the scene and will be talked about for seasons to come. A fantastic night, with special thanks to Mick Asbury for his help in allowing the night to function so well.

PAST PLAYERS DAY - CELEBRATION OF 1988, 89 & 90 FLAGS, INTRA CLUB 20/20 – PAST vs. CURRENT SQUADS, & MILO CRICKET SHOWCASE Special thanks to Greg Anderson for his work in putting on such a wonderful day, and what a day it was. It was fantastic to be apart of a day celebrating the past success of our champions, winning three consecutive premierships, creating club history and setting the benchmark for current BCC teams today. Our intra club 20/20 was a fantastic close showcase with the past players possessing all the skills required to knock of our current crop. The BBQ was fantastic and it was great to see our future „Milo‟ and hopefully Australian stars out on Beverley Oval under the superb guidance of our junior coaches.

Overall, a great social year that was also made up of our annual Trivia Night, Christmas Party and various BBQ‟s. Thanks to all those people who year in and year out involve themselves to make the BCC a place that our members, friends and families love to be at over the summer!

Cheers

RYAN HARTNETT SOCIAL VICE PRESIDENT

17 COACHES’ REPORT

After great success in season 2008-09 with 2 senior premierships, season 2009-10 was always going to be a huge test in backing up this performance as well as providing opportunities to the youth of the club to continue to develop. Whilst we often judge performance based on trophies and silverware, I think we can be extremely proud of what we achieved during the year, to once again return to the Grand Final in A Grade was something we all should be proud of as a club.

With many senior players happily in retirement this season or dropping down the grades, season 2009-10 opened the door for many of our younger brigade to be given the chance at the highest level, and there were some great signs for the future years. Some of the great highlights from the youth were:  Jordan Samad‟s debut in A Grade at 14  Henry Tyler‟s first season at the club culminating in playing in the A Grade Grand Final  Marcus Kernaghan‟s first senior 100 in 2nd Grade  James „Boris” Alexandrov‟s first season 5fa in 2nd Grade  Stephen Tindale‟s first season 100 in 3rd Grade  Garrick Melton‟s successful return to cricket after a long recovery and finding his previous form to win his first senior bowling trophy  Lindsay „Gordo‟ Russell‟s consistent wicket taking and development as a spinner

I would like to thank the captains in their respective grades, they were not only great leaders to their sides, but fantastic support to me as coach, and certainly made Thursday night selection meeting‟s very entertaining!  Brent O‟Connor did a brilliant job with A Grade once again and his performance in the Semi Final to basically single handedly drag us over the line when in extreme pain highlights his outstanding ability to lead the club.  Paul Davis had a great season leading a very young second grade side, and whilst the consistency wasn‟t always there, which we expect with a young side, we saw some great signs and I thank Paul personally for sacrificing his own opportunities higher to help develop and lead a very young side.  Mick Asbury and Brian Wallwork led a 3rd grade side often having 5 or 6 changes each week to the side, but they ensured the guys enjoyed their cricket, all received a fair go, and as the season wore on ending up knocking off some of the highly fancied sides, always great to beat the Sanna‟s!  Feroze Chowdary and 13 others did a great job leading 4th Grade! At times it looked like the courtesy bus had picked up the team from a retirement home, but to have a group of guys back together that all wanted to play with their mates was a great thing for the club and highly entertaining!

I personally received a great deal of support and guidance during my first year as coach and would like to thank the following people for their help:  Ash Gannon - Specialist batting coach to the group, worked tirelessly giving up his own time to come to the club to help develop the younger guys at the club and work with senior players as we worked towards finals cricket. A huge help, thanks mate!  Darren Tindale – A huge support to me early in season at training working with me and individual batsmen, and then even helped out with a few games!  Shaun O‟Connor – A great addition to the club who took over the role as bowling coach at xmas, and the guys you worked with certainly benefited from your coaching and mentoring.  Brent O‟Connor – As A Grade Captain, thanks for all your assistance at training, running many of the nights and different drills during the sessions. Thanks for all the long chats about selection, plans for the season and all you help with guidance to what I was doing throughout the season.  Jeff Wilson – Great support at Thursday night training sessions, and your leadership as Captain for 2 games was fantastic.  Committee of the club – thanks for all your support during the season, the opportunity to coach the club was a highlight for me, and your faith in me to work with the club and help develop our youth is greatly appreciated.

To everyone who was involved in the club this season, I hope you enjoyed the season, worked hard to achieve and improve and are ready to once again take the next step in season 2010-11 when we do everything possible to get Jack back and make finals in all grades. Congratulations to those who have played their last game (until we call begging you!) in particular Tim Veal who called a close to one of the most distinguished careers at Banyule, it was an honour to play so many games with you and share the field with you a few more times last season.

To my family involved in the club, thanks Philo and Greg who play a huge part in my time at Banyule, your support to me as coach was fantastic and appreciated and of course to my wife Terri, thanks so much for all your support. To have planned a wedding basically on you own whilst I was planning training sessions was a huge achievement and I thank you very much!

CAPTAIN”S REPORT

It all started back in August with Dlo taking over as coach of the club. Pre-season was firing with numbers at training better than ever. We had some new faces and obviously some retirements from the premiership side the previous year. The inclusions were Rhys Bevan & Shaun O'Connor & departing were Martin Phillips (president duties) & PD to captain the magoos.

The season started off well with a very convincing display against East Ivanhoe at the picturesque Beverly Road oval.

Our next game was against the new team – Rosebank. We had heard a lot about them and it was great to play them early on. I “decided” to lose the toss for once and we bowled first. They amassed 202 in 40 over's. The ground was very quick and boundaries weren't an issue – keeping in hand was the key. We started well with new kid Shaun O'Connor smashing a quick 30 off 5 overs before we lost both openers in the same over. A couple of steady partnerships and we were on target at 4 for 100 in around 24 overs. Rowdy batted well for 50 and the game stated to swing in our favour before the experience of Rosebank‟s side shone through – their spinner taking 3 wickets in one over. We fell 7 runs short - a terrific effort but still disappointing.

After Xmas we began well with a 9 wicket win against Rosanna. Shaun O‟Connor made his first 50 for the club. We continued on next game by pumping of West Heidelberg with another new boy in Phil Barnes bowling well & Dlo making a great 45.

The captain decided to have 4 weeks off to go surfing in Hawaii leaving Joffa at the helm. We had a narrow loss to Rosebank, before convincingly beating Heidelberg in a one-dayer and dropping the last game against Edinburgh. We finished 3rd after the home and away season - just behind Heidelberg and Rosebank.

The bowling during the year was fantastic I would specifically like to mention the effort of Tim Veal who helped out for a couple of games - good luck on your retirement mate.

The batting was not so good good. Andy Clapton looked solid with a couple of 40s and Butters made a valuable 35 against Rosebank but overall our batting was poor.

Our fielding on the other hand improved in leaps and bounds. I attribute this mainly to Dlo working us hard at training. Ryan Hartnett was improving every game, taking some great catches and letting loose with some sledging that only a 2yo would understand - great year behind the stumps Mumbles. Darren Butterworth's fielding was also a highlight – he led the competition with the most catches closely followed by Shaun!

SEMI FINAL BANYULE VS HEIDELBERG

Day 1

Once again decided to lose the toss and bowl Heidelberg started ok 0 for 20 before we struck in consecutive over's. A massive thunderstorm was brewing and the day was called off with the bergs 4 for 45.

Day 2

Amazing start wickets in the first 2 over's and before we knew it we had skittled them for 56. All the bowlers bowled superbly. Our confidence was high and we made a solid start before losing the first wicket at 22. Unfortunately we lost quick wickets and were in trouble at 7 for 54 before some late hitting pushed our score out to 81. Tom Woodmen looked very confident with 23. With 80 plus over's left in the match it was still anyone's game. Tensions were building and a few choice words were exchanged – “ring-a-ding-ding”. At the close of play the „bergs were 3 for 30 - a lead of 5 with 7 wickets in hand and a nothing-to-lose attitude.

Day 3

What a day! It had everything. Like the previous day wickets were tumbling and runs were hard to get. We kept breaking partnerships and Heidelberg were all out for 98 - a lead of 73 and with 42 overs still to be bowled. We also had lost Shaun to a serious back injury (that would keep him out of the Grand Final), I was struggling with a knee and Dlo had been stung by a bee during the pre-game net session. We lost 2 wickets in the first few overs and they continued to fall. With the score at 5 for 27 and 30 overs still remaining we were in dire straits. We decided to play positively and go for the runs instead of playing for survival and it worked. With consecutive boundaries the momentum shifted and we were in the box sit and heading for victory. We lost only one more wicket at 48 before a great partnership allowed us to finish with 6 for 74 and outright victory.

GRAND FINAL – BANYULE v ROSEBANK

Day 1

Lost the toss again and something different bowl first. Played on a beautiful ground with a flat pitch we knew we had to be at our best to restrict Rosebank to under 250. At tea Break we threw everything at them and had them 2 for 65 off 40 over's and were in a great situation. We knew they Bat all the way but were very confident of chasing a huge score. Wickets fell after tea before a partnership of 40 in the middle order which we knew would come and Rosebank finished the day 9 for 210. We put ourselves in a great position to win. All Bowlers bowled there heart out and Mumbles and Henry were fantastic in the field.

Day 2

Arriving at the ground everyone was in a positive mood and feeling very confident against their bowling attack. First ball of the day was a 4 to fine leg - great start. That was about it - 5 for 12 and the game was over. Some positive batting from Steve Pinner, who top scored with 23, was the only highlight in a very disappointing batting display. Give credit where it‟s due - they are the best side I‟ve seen in my 8 years at Banyule and we need to get better in all areas to be competitive with them next year.

In closing, thank you to Dlo as coach of the club. Working with you was always fun and hopefully you will coach again one day. Thank you to all the players this year who represented the ones - we are a very young group who will improve each year. Thank you to Joffa for standing in as captain for a few games.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

While season 2009/10 started with hope and intent, it soon became evident that it was to be a year of development and persistence. While this may sound a little defeatist, it was a year that was both fulfilling and rewarding as a Captain and player. While a few of us in the team where entering the veteran stage of our cricketing life, the influx of talented youth brought a new dynamic mix to the team.

While the victories were limited, we did experience many highs throughout the season and in most games there was always a positive to be taken. One of the most rewarding aspects was our efforts in the field and with the ball. With the introduction of fresh new players, we were witness to some superb catching and ground fielding. While collectively we were a little quiet in the field at the start of the season, as a team we grew throughout the year and it was great to see some characters develop and trade a little banter with some of the more experienced opposition players. Comments were often made to me at the end of a game, about the spirit the team showed on the field. As a Captain this was a fantastic piece of feedback to hear about your team.

Our bowling at times throughout the year was as good as any in the competition. We had a great mix of variety with our bowling, there was the sheer pace of Scott Clapton, the swing and control of Tim Veal and the spin of both Sam Place and James Alexandrov. While we had many other contributors it was great to see all these players have terrific moments throughout the year. The highlight in the bowling was to see James get his first five wicket haul for Banyule in senior cricket.

While our bowling and fielding were good, our batting was the weak link. Whenever we were able to put some runs on the board our bowlers would never let us down. Unfortunately we were never able to reliably score runs and this advertently is where we fell down as a group. There was however one fantastic moment during the year and that was to see Marcus Kernaghan score his maiden century for Banyule.

In closing, I would like to thank all the players for their efforts throughout the year. There were many highlights throughout the season, both on and off the field and I look forward to seeing you all again next year as we try deliver on the glimpses of potential we showed.

To the coaches, captains and committee members, thanks for your dedication throughout season 2009/10. Without your contributions our club would not be as strong as it is.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

After much success last year we started the season with confidence as reining premiers. But with only 3 of last year‟s premiership players in the team our hope of a dream start to the season were dashed. We did not post a win until round 6 which made it very hard for all of the boys to get up each week. It has to be said that we were not far away in most of the first 5 game, even winning 1st innings against Rosebank only to be beaten reverse outright, a very hard way to get first points on the board, we all walked off the field that day not knowing how to feel. The season was made harder with the sudden illness of Brian‟s mother which kept him out of the team for the last two game before Christmas. This led to Brian stepping down as captain to concentrate on helping his mother through her treatment.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian for his captaincy for the first half of the season. Brian was always positive and I believe captained the side to its fullest potential, he left me some very big shoes to fill.

Coming back from Christmas our first game was against a depleted Old Ivanhoe. We ended up posting 4/259 in our 40 over‟s smashing old Ivanhoe thus giving the boys the belief we could perform much better in the second half of the season. In the next game we defeated one of the top 4 sides (a real shock to Rosanna) by sticking to what we do best, playing good cricket. With 2 wins in a row we had our tail up and completed a streak of 4 wins before falling to Edinburgh in the second last round. This loss was not before a fantastic crack at an outright against Heidelberg West where we scored 6/374 dec. With both Renna and Steve Tindale making 100‟s. Steve‟s was very impressive as he went into tea 17n.o. and made his ton before the next drinks break. I also witnessed my first retirement after making a 100 by Renna. Once he made his ton he came off and said “let one of the younger boys have a go!”

Unfortunately we did not post another win for the rest of the season, but as a group we discovered a lot about our cricket and also I believe had a enjoyable time on the field.

Thank you to all of the boys who played a game in 3rd grade this year, I really enjoyed yoru company and input into the season. I look forward to playing together again next season.

D GRADE

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

The season for 4th Grade was one of missed opportunities and not delivering on the potential that on paper would have most opposition teams fearful of what a fully loaded 4th grade side could deliver. In the end – 4th Grade missed playing finals by 0.0138 on percentage. A small amount that could have been easily avoided if we had taken our chances during the year.

The season was much more than just about missing playing finals by a small percentage point but rather the memories formed. It was a fulfilling year for me as captain and one who enjoys playing with his friends. Some of these memories/highlights include:

 the return of Nick Roberts and being hit for 83 runs in 3 overs “but equally taking one of the best catches ever”.  Scott Butler‟s run of ducks, his abuse of patrons on the field and bullying of that poor lad from Rosanna.  Skull‟s captaincy when the standby captain was not there. Thank you Brad!  Greg Barnes “a.k.a Monica” for bowling tirelessly every game he played, and supporting Papa Clapton.  our #1 spinner “Gordo”, who came out of his shell and bowled some magnificent spells none better than the last game.  Jedda for opening 2nd innings that game, sacrificing his marriage and wedded bliss to win outright. Thanks Jed!  the quiet achiever “Brad Moore”, we have unearthed a talent here, albeit he is related to Marty “sorry about that Brad”.  iron gloves “Funky” – always positive and helpful with all tasks, including returning a huge to surplus in funds collected.  the late comer to the party “Usher Harte”, who helped us to some great victories late in the season with bat and ball.  the old man “Papa” more comebacks than John Farnham. Truly a great and humble cricketer with fire in his belly.  Plugga for hanging up on his captain and does not take instructions well, but does stick up for Butts on the field.  Ralph – for some great action shots and being 12th man for most of the year…see you next year Ralphy!  Puppeteer – scoring on Fri nights and telling us during the game where he should be scoring.

The true highlight for me was to see the father and son combinations, none more special than Gordo and Skull batting. There were a number of folks who also filled in “Shano, Kane Moore, Jack Veal, Renna, Steve Tindale, Young Jed Place, Garrick Melton, etc..” these guys were absolutely magnificent for helping out. Who could ever forget Scooby for filling in the last game. Thank you. Apologies to those I have missed out!

The standout batting and bowling highlights belong to Skull and Papa Clapton, together these two guys carried the team at times, a wonderful year by both who also took out the batting and bowling awards. There were also some other wonderful performances during the year from Gordo, Greg Barnes, Jedda and Craig. Yes you to Butts you had a good year sledging!

As we all know it – a cricket club and for that matter any club does not function without a number of contributions from the coaches, committee members, captains, and other key contributors to the club. To them I thank you for a wonderful job throughout 2010, especially Brad as stand in captain.

To the 4th grade boys who helped week in week out “Funky, Butts, Skull, Jedda, Plugga, Papa, Ralphy” – I really have much to be grateful for your help throughout the season. To the others thank you for scoring, square leg umpiring, helping with the tent, etc it all counts.

Finally – we play 4th grade cricket not for the accolades or glory, “that is nice” but we play it for the memories and the opportunity to spend those 40ºC Saturday afternoons with friends to form those bonds that will last a lifetime. So to all of the 4th Grade boys, hope to see you in season 2010/11.

Happy Winter and see you at pre-training in September!

29 JUNIOR COORDINATORS REPORT

The Junior division of the Banyule Cricket Club had a very successful season. I‟ll begin my report with some statistics.

We fielded 9 teams, the most we have ever fielded. We had 3 Under 11 teams, 3 Under 13 teams, 2 Under 15 teams and an Under 17 side.

We played 107 junior players; 36 in Kookaburra‟s, 37 in Under 13‟s, 23 in Under 15‟s and 11 in Under 17‟s.

We had 5 of our 6 Competition teams play in finals; we finished up with 1 premiership and 3 runners-up pennants.

In the Junior Grades we had Banyule players win 5 of the 10 Heidelberg District Competition Averages Awards. Well done to the following boys;  Steven Mitchell won the under 17 Green bowling averages with 7.73 runs per wicket  Paddy McKinlay won the under 15 Gold bowling averages with 4.23 runs per wicket  Jeremy Jones won the under 15 Green bowling averages with 7.60 runs per wicket  Raymond Mitchell won the under 13 Gold batting averages with 136.5 runs per innings  Brayden Sier won the under 13 Gold bowling averages with 4.73 runs per wicket

Congratulations to the following Banyule players for their selection in the various representative teams:  Under 18 North East Falcons: James Moio (ex- Banyule junior)  Under 16 North East Falcons: Thomas Goulding  Under 14 North East Falcons, Under 15 Victorian and Australian School boys selection: Ejaaz Alavi  Under 15 Ivanhoe Hatch: Shane Doherty and Michael Italia  Under 16 HDCA: Nick Gillies, James Alexandrov, Jeff Mitchell, Corey Parrant, Jordan Samad (Vice Captain)  Under 14 HDCA: Ethan Knight, Jake Smith, Raymond Mitchell, Bradley Laws and Coached by Russell Laws  Under 12 HDCA: Callum Asbury, Ryan Malcolm, Adam Samad, Brayden Sier (Co-Captain) and Coached by Steve Taylor

To have 17 of our current boys be selected to play higher level representative cricket speaks volumes for the wonderful coaching they receive as well as parental support.

We had 37 new players join the club this season, 19 new under 11 players, 7 new Under 13 players, 9 new Under 15 players and 2 new Under 17 players.

8 of our 11 First XI team who played off in the A Grade Grand Final were former Banyule juniors.

Congratulations to our Under 13 Premiership Coach Russell Laws who was very well assisted by Joe Sier. They went through the entire season undefeated.

Thank you to other Coaches, Steve Pinner and Ryan Hartnett (U/17), Mark Jones (U/15), Russell Laws and Joe Sier (U/13 Gold), Mick Asbury and Alex Mulholland (U/13 Blue), Steve Taylor & Fraser Neilson (U/13 Maroon), Brad & Lindsay Russell (U/11 Blue), Michael Harte and Jed Place (U/11 Maroon) and Dale Mayne (U/11 White).

I don‟t like singling out anyone but I‟d like to make special mention of Dale and Rebecca Mayne who organized and managed a very competitive, albeit slightly unpunctual Kookaburra team, made up of Eltham Wildcat basketballers and Viewbank Primary boys. They have assured me that there is considerable interest next season too.

Final thanks should go to all those wonderful mums and dads who drive their children to games and support them through thick and thin. I enjoy the positive parental support that our club enjoys and I hope parents appreciate the opportunities and friendships that are afforded to their children. I believe we are a great Cricket club and I look forward to seeing everyone at sign-up day in late August.

GEOFF PLACE (Junior Coordinator and U/15 Coach)

30 JUNIORS - U17 GREEN

COACH’S REPORT

The Banyule Under 17 Green Team enjoyed a highly successful season during 2009/10 despite falling at the final hurdle and finishing runners up. The team came together with boys from our Under 15‟s as well as some from last year‟s U/17‟s plus some imports who play Seniors elsewhere.

James Holloway a Banyule junior player from last year‟s Under 17 team immediately stamped himself as a leader and put up his hand to lead the side, which is was an indication of his competitive spirit. James was ably supported by Steve Mitchell and James Alexandrov.

As co-coaches, we had a number of objectives for the season;  Improve cricket skills and confidence of the boys through everyone getting a chance to bowl, bat and field.  Allow James, Steve and James to develop their captaincy skills and tactical knowledge by encouraging them to make decisions in the field and play an active role in batting orders, etc.  Prepare the boys for senior cricket through encouraging a competitive spirit that always adheres to the spirit of the game  Have fun and develop a lifelong love of the game  Have as successful year as the commitment to the points above would allow.

After a disappointing start to the season, with a loss to arch rivals Rosanna, the team began to gel and individual and team performances improved dramatically. Some of the individual highlights for the season were;  Steve Mitchell‟s batting & bowling that resulted in Steve winning the awards for the HDCA and Banyule plus Banyule‟s batting award.  James Alexandrov having the 3rd highest aggregate of runs scored in the HDCA  James Holloway having the 3rd highest batting average in the comp as well taking 10 wickets at an average of 12.9.  Corey Parrant enjoying a breakout season with the ball and bat, taking 10 wickets at 12.7 and scoring 102 runs at 17. Corey also made his senior debut and showed he will be a very good cricketer for Banyule.  James Fraser scoring 114 runs at 22.80 and 6 wickets at 18.67 runs per wicket  Cam Ataryniw taking over wicketkeeping duties and doing a fantastic job. Cam also played some vital innings as his batting improved out of sight.  Jed Place‟s batting improving so much that he opened the batting in the finals and showed that he has the ability to be a success in that position.  Nick Gillies scaring the daylights out of opposition batsmen with his pace. Nick also realising that a variation of pace is the key to him becoming a seriously good bowler.  Paul Hoang‟s determined batting and vastly improved off spinners showing his ability to develop into a quality all rounder  Ryan Gall‟s bowling coming on in leaps and bounds. As Ryan gets bigger & stronger he will be a real handful to face at senior levels.  Kane Moore showing glimpses of brilliance in the field and with the ball in his hand. Kane also starting to understand that being positive with the bat will make him into a good player.

The most encouraging thing from our point of view was the camaraderie that the boys developed as the season progressed. With the vast majority of this team staying together next season, as well as some very good under 15 boys coming up, a chance for the ultimate success is a real possibility.

Thanks to the support of all parents, especially Mark Parrant, Brett Gillies and Ash Fraser who were always around to help out with training, scoring and looking after the team when we were both unavailable. We wish the boys all the best in their studies during the year and look forward to seeing them back at the club next season to win the flag we just missed out on this year.

Go Bears!

32 JUNIORS - U15 GOLD (Blue & Maroon)

COACH’S REPORT - BLUE

To put the season in some perspective, we had a collection of very talented players who were very easy to work with and enjoyed each other‟s company. We were undefeated until the final minute of the season where we lost a Grand Final by a solitary run.

I sincerely hope that all the boys return in 2 seasons time to win a Premiership together; we have unfinished business to complete in the Under 17‟s in season 2011/12.

Hopefully the disappointment of not fulfilling our potential will strengthen the boys‟ resolve and we will play cricket a little more ruthlessly next time (whilst still enjoying ourselves, of course).

I want to make mention of each of the team individually in alphabetical order:

 Ejaaz Alavi: a super young cricketer who‟s left arm orthodox bowling had the opposition bamboozled. Ejaaz‟s heroics in the grand Final, he took 4 for 14 with the ball and scrapped to get 21 with the bat, will be remembered. Ejaaz was chosen to play for the Under 14 North East Falcons, picked for Victorian U/15‟s and finally he was selected for the Australian School Boys Under 15 team.  Nick Bates: Nick grew and grew this season, not only in stature but also in ability. Nick‟s keeping really progressed with 2 stumpings and a run out in the Grand Final. His batting also got better as the season progressed and he matured into a reliable opening batsman. A great season Nick.  Shane Doherty: His middle order batting was steady this season with an average of 48 runs. Shane‟s legspin bowling tied down the opposition and he was stiff not to take more wickets than he did. On the field his talking and encouragement was superb. Shane was chosen to represent Ivanhoe in the Under 15 Hatch completion.  Tom Goulding; Tom is a quiet, deep thinking cricketer with enormous talent. His left hand batting was very effective and he won our batting averages. Tom‟s bowling was also steady. He is a reliable fieldsman and very team oriented. Tom was chosen to play for the North East Falcons U/16 team.  Michael Italia; Michael‟s batting was explosive at times. He averaged 32 with the bat and saved us from collapse a number of times with timely half centuries. Michael is passionate on the field and rises to a challenge. Michael was picked to represent Ivanhoe in the Under 15 Hatch completion.  Jeremy Jackson; Jezza is an aggressive batsman. His 50 against Rosanna was sensational. If the ball is there he whacks it. He can be elevated up the order should our run rate lag and he can be at times our fastest bowler. Jezza was one of our biggest improvers this season.  Paddy McKinlay: This lad has a heart as big as a cricket field. He is a coach‟s dream. He is modest and polite which endears him to his team mates. Underneath his mild exterior lurks a real competitor. Paddy won the HDCA bowling averages as well as the Club‟s bowling averages by taking 14 wickets at 5.9 runs apiece.  Jeff Mitchell; Joffa is a great left arm swing bowler who regularly opened our bowling and is a patient batsman who values his wicket. His lower order batting kept us in the Grand Final. Jeff was selected to represent the HDCA Under 16‟s and his superb run out won the game against the Diamond Valley. I love his no nonsense approach to cricket where he gives his all.  Brad Moore; Brad was very unlucky not to have won the Bowling averages. He opened our bowling and took 19 wickets at 7.4 runs each and had a batting average of 23. He took 5 catches and 2 great run-outs. He has a great throwing arm and thoroughly deserved to win our fielding award. Brad‟s heroics in the Grand Final with the bat will long be remembered. He is a quiet and determined competitor whose never say die attitude is superb.  Jordan Samad: Jordan played some very good innings for us this year; he was named in the HDCA Under 16 team and appointed Vice Captain. It was great to see him play some A Grade cricket too for our seniors. Jordan took some great catches for us and displayed his leadership skills when captaining.  Ben Stevenson: Ben is a hard hitting left hand opening batsman. He has enormous potential, and this was evident with his superb 50 in the semi-final win against Rosanna. Ben also has very safe hands in the field. Benny won the Coaches award and is very much a team player.

Finally I‟d like to thank the dads and mums who made my involvement so enjoyable. Particular mention to Craig Bates who scored every week, and his bookwork was superb. He even kept a record of balls faced by the batsmen. Thanks also to Almaaz Alavi, Marty Jackson, Steve Doherty, John Goulding who all umpired at some stage, usually at Almaaz‟s instigation.

COACH’S REPORT - MAROON

2009 /2010 was a great year for the u/15 green team. The season started off on a positive note with an influx of new players to the club, all our new members were warmly welcomed and the group quickly became a united team.

Our aim at the start of the year was to achieve three goals;  To enjoy the game and establish new friendships  To improve our skill level  To play the game in accordance with BCC values

All goals were achieved with flying colors and consequently what also followed was a successful year in terms of results both personal and team. To play off for the flag was the icing on the cake.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the year was the work ethic shown by all players, the boys trained hard and always listened and as a result skill levels improved dramatically as the season unfolded.

Congratulations to all players;

COACH’S REPORT

Well what a wonderful season the boys had. As coach I try to instill strong work ethics, such as training correctly, working hard on strengths and weaknesses and to achieve the best results on game day as possible. All the boys should take a bow because our attendance at training was exceptional and the match day results were outstanding (no losses).

Throughout the season all the boys contributed to the end result (premiership) New boys Jake Smith and Ray Mitchell had wonderful personal achievements Brad Laws leggies keep on getting better, Brayden Sier, Mitch Brown, Zac Tolley, Marcus Jones and Ethan Knight showed great maturity in important times. Adam Samad improvement and enthusiasm keeps gathering momentum Ryan Malcolm dedication to be better was a credit to him, Harry Thompson improvement in all facets was fantastic, Calder Wallace willingness to learn the game of cricket and work hard to achieve results will hold him in good stead for the future. Having not been defeated can at times blur the team aspect, sure we had representative players Jake Smith, Ray Mitchell, Brad Laws, Ethan Knight, Brayden Sier, Adam Samad and Ryan Malcolm but all the boys showed great team spirit each enjoying everyone‟s success, the application throughout the season was exemplary.

The Mums and Dads dedication can never be overlooked and they are such an integral part in the development of the boys getting to training, game days and most of all just listening. Thank you, parents.

All the boys above have been given a tremendous opportunity to succeed, Banyule offers outstanding facilities and a pathway in which you dare to dream. Coaching the boys was a joy, fundamentally we can all improve what we do and hopefully as time goes by this will shine through.

Thank you once again Banyule C C for the opportunity to coach a great group of young cricketers and to Geoff Place for his outstanding organizational skills.

36 JUNIORS – U13 GREEN (Blue & Maroon)

COACH’S REPORT - BLUE

Under 13 Blue had a great year with many of the boys playing their first competition games for the Club.

We won the first 4 matches and finished the year winning 5 of 8 home and away games, making it to the semi final, and even when we were a long way out of the game we produced something special taking 4 wickets for around 2 run‟s within the final over‟s and really giving the opposition a scare.

All of the boys really improved their skills throughout the year with two of the boy‟s celebrating their first milestones at the club, Luke McGuinness with his first 50 and Bryce Gardiner with his first 5 wicket haul.

The most impressive of all was the boys‟ dedication to training and to improving their skills not only in batting and bowling but also working hard on their fielding.

Some special mentions for the year are, Jerome Hingert who became our wicket keeper for the year, made 93 runs at an average of 23.5, he really worked hard on his game. Fraser Gaypersad at the start of the year only really blocked the ball and by the end of the year made a top score of 25 n/o. Ryan Doherty playing his first year of cricket, really worked on improving his all round cricket. Brodie Wood effecting the best run out I have ever seen, taking a catch off a no ball then stumping the non-striker who was out of his crease. Tristan Carter who always worked hard in the field. Alexander Gaypersad who was close in both the batting and bowling performed consistently throughout the year. Nicholas Gaypersad who despite playing well above his age group really tried hard and was always moving in the field Mitchell Brown who was the happiest boy on the field, would always do everything we asked and really put in for the team.

I know that both Alex and I were really impressed with the boy‟s improvement this year and we would really like to thank them for all of their hard work throughout the season. We would also like to thank all of the parents who helped out throughout the season; we would not have been able to run the team without you.

Award Winners:

 Fielding: Nathanael Mancev– Always rely in him - walking in and concentrating in the field. Held his catches and effected run outs.  Batting and Bowling: Callum Asbury  Coaches Award: Bryce Gardiner – Worked really hard throughout the year on both his batting, bowling and fielding, which showed when he top scored with 30 runs and took 5/19 in the semi final. He was easily the Man of the Match.

COACH’S REPORT - MAROON

The 2009/2010 season was a large jump for the Under 13 Maroon team because they had all come up from Kookaburra‟s. It was a tough year, one that had its highs and lows.

The season saw the Maroon team win 3 games and unfortunately lose 5. We ended sixth on the ladder. As the season progressed, so did the boys skill, discipline and enjoyment of the game. Unfortunately our extras continued to let us down and we could not come away with more wins.

There were a number of highlights throughout the season, in particular a wonderful round 2 win against Viewbank with 4/182 and a highest partnership between Ethan Crowhurst and Bailey Neilson of 132. This saw Bailey achieve his first 50 and with a not out, but similarly two other boys also retired not out this game, Curtis Butt and Rory Corcoran. What a great start to the season!

Unfortunately we couldn‟t continue with this great form, and only had two more wins for the entire season. In round 5 we had a magnificent win, scoring 9/206 against Edinburgh Yellow. Bailey Neilson, Cameron Smith and Jack Rigoni batted in great style, scoring 35, 25 and 29 respectively, but ending in not outs for Cam and Jack. In round 7, though we lost by 10 runs, it was a great display of bowling by the entire team. Ethan Crowhurst, Ethan Appleby and Cam Smith took 2 wickets each and Bailey Neilson took 3. Unfortunately extras let us down once again in this game.

For three of the boys, the season was extra special. Ethan Appleby, Cam Smith and Bailey Neilson were invited to try out for the Mitchell Sheild representative side. Though they were all unsuccessful in making it, it was great experience for them all.

Congratulations to the following boys for taking out the awards this season:

 Batting Award : Bailey Neilson – winning with an average of 31.2  Bowling Award : Bailey Neilson – winning with an average of 11.4 and taking 8 wickets  Coaches Award : Ethan Appleby – Ethan averaged 15.5 in batting and 20.6 in bowling and continued to improve throughout the season.  Coaches Award : Jack Rigoni – Jack averaged 21.20 off his batting and 28.7 from his bowling and also continued to improve throughout the season.

A special mention to all the parents who continued to provide their support to this great team. Many contributed their assistance throughout the season, and without this, the team would not have functioned as well on a weekly basis. Let‟s hope the boys and their parents return for another season with Banyule in 2010/11.

COACH’S REPORT – BLUE

The kookaburra‟s had a fantastic season. As a coach this is judged by the overall improvement of the team, which was outstanding!

The players were helped to a high standard this season with the combined efforts of myself, Martin Veal and his training drills, which were invaluable; and Lindsay who has matured as a junior coach.

Thanks to all the parents for your help, it makes our time enjoyable.

I would like to thank Corey Parrant for scoring and also Mark for videoing the boys it was a coaching asset.

SCOTT CHANDRASIRI; Scott is the backbone of the team. Not only is he a very good batsmen, bowler and wicketkeeper he makes game day fun with his big smile! SHLOK SARAF; Shlok won the batting trophy and is the type of guy who can win a game with his bowling and fielding. JAMES TYRELL; James batted well this season, often opening the batting and doing a fine job! His left arm bowling will be an asset for future teams. LIAM HIRD; Liam won the bowling trophy with accurate bowling. He bats well but needs to wait for the ball to go the down leg side, to maximize is strong leg side shots. JACK PARRANT; This is Jack‟s third season in Kookaburras, he is a great all-rounder. He does it all well; bats, bowls, and in the field has a strong throwing arm and never drops a catch! EMERSON BUTT; Emerson is the most improved player from last season and appeared to enjoy his season. We hope that his musical talents will allow another season of cricket or we might have to start a band at the cricket club. THOMAS POLAMBO; Thomas showed that he is a good bowler and tried very hard to bat correctly. He had a great season for a guy who couldn‟t train because of other commitments. MATTHEW HIRD; Matthew shows a good technique, when he bats. He bowls a great line and length. Matthew will be a good cricketer and more self-confidence will prove this. THOMAS ROBERTS; Thomas has the making a middle order batsmen, he hits the ball hard but he needs to hit the ball along the ground. His bowling is always improving and he tries very hard when he is wicket keeping. SEAN MILLIS; Sean at training uses every minute to practice correctly, this dedication has made him the most improved first season player. We hope Sean is very proud of how well he bats and bowls, because his coaches are! JACK ARANDT; Jack is a very confident cricketer; he takes great catches especially off his own bowling. He bats very correctly, and shows no fear when batting or wicket keeping. Jack won a „coaches award trophy‟. TOM DILLON; Tom‟s bowling improved dramatically when he was shown, a small problem in his bowling style on video, good work Tom! Tom bats well and had a good all-round season. SPENCER VEAL; Spencer‟s batting and bowling improved during the season with a little help from the coaches, but it was in the field that Spencer really stood out with his fantastic fielding. He is a team player, always encouraging and showing leadership qualities; that‟s why he received a coach‟s award trophy.

A BIG THANKS TO GEOFF PLACE, HE‟S THE REASON THAT EVERY THING RUNS SO SMOOTHLY!!!

Cheers! See everyone next season,

BRAD & LINDSAY RUSSELL

COACH’S REPORT – MAROON

Season 2009/2010 saw great development in the boys of Banyule U/11 Maroon. Even though we have no ladders in the Kookaburras and we play for fun, the boys love to win and we had some great games. The game of the season was actually the last game of the season and was against Banyule Blue. Both teams fought hard in front of a vocal crowd of parents and families and the game went right down to the wire with Banyule Blue holding us off in the final over for a one run win. I was very proud of the boys in both teams with great sportsmanship shown both during and after the game.

Games at this level are usually won by the team that bowls the most number of balls on the pitch. In this respect our team made great strides this year. Kye, Matthew H, Patrick and Harry all bowled well during the season with the star improver being Jason Mack. Connor T won the bowling average with his wily slower balls bamboozling opposition batsmen. First year players James, Ezra, Connor B, Michael and Thomas all improved as the season progressed.

On the batting front, Connor B, Harry, Connor T, Patrick and Matthew K all had great seasons with some blazing innings. Matthew H won the batting average by valuing his wicket and hitting the loose ball. Running between the wickets was also an area of great improvement by all of the boys during the season.

In the field Banyule Maroon did well with Ezra and James exhibiting strong arms and great aim. Matthew K did great work behind the stumps and was well supported by Michael and Harry. Next season we just have to work on our concentration to make sure we are ready to take any chances that come our way.

The coach‟s awards went to Harry for his great all round season with the bat and ball and Patrick for his application and enthusiasm.

There are a number of people I would like to thank: Laurie Barnes, Damien Braniff, Ross Jeffery and Zack and Steve Tolley for their help at training and on match day; my co-coach Jed Place for his skills works with the boys and umpire duty sharing; Brad and Lindsay Russell; Geoff Place; the boys from Banyule White who trained with us all season. Of course I would like thank the Banyule Maroon boys for being a great bunch of kids and for letting me share with them our love of the game. I look forward to seeing you all again next season.

COACH’S REPORT – WHITE

Our Kookaburra White team consisted of new players to cricket with the majority of the boys grade 3‟s at the start of the season.

The boys loved their cricket, had heaps of fun, listened to their coach and improved immeasurably over the season.

The Team

Matthew Jeffrey- Matt won our batting award and really learnt to play with a straight bat in the second half of the season. Matt loves his cricket and does all areas of the game well. Matt has a bright future at Banyule CC. Great stuff Matthew.

Aaron Luber- Azza is another boy with a good all round game. Aaron is a courageous batsman, tricky bowler and great fielder. Well done Azza.

Nicholas Mayne- Nick is a nice striker of the ball with a very good eye. Nicks bowling is consistent and he is a very quick fielder. Great first season Nicko.

Mackenzie Graham- Mac is a speed demon as a bowler, a reliable batsman and another quick fielder. Terrific season Mac.

Kade Rowe- Kade is a reliable patient batsman, whom also bowls and fields consistently. A fantastic listener and team player. Well done Rowey.

Thomas Churchland- Tom is a very promising cricket player with good technique whilst batting and a natural keeper. Top effort Tom.

Lars Scherring- Lars started late and improved every game. He is very courageous when he bats and is another great listener. Good work Lars.

Zach Williamson- Zach enjoyed his first season and gives his all every game. He plays with a straight bat and is a good fieldsman. Well done Zach.

Kane Martino- Kane was the big improver this season and was batting beautifully by the last game. Great season Kano.

Jackson Riley- Jacko had a great first season hampered by a broken arm; mind you he still bowled and fielded those games. Jacko gets good bounce when he bowls and batted solidly all season. Good on you Jacko.

Nathan Berry- Nathan has a terrific eye and is a big hitter whilst batting. Nathan also won our bowling award this season. Terrific season Nathan.

Thanks to Geoff Place for his enthusiasm and support and to all the parents who had as much fun as the boys. See you next season boys.

44 MILO CRICKET

For the second year we ran a Milo Cricket program at Banyule. This season we had 32 participants ranging in age from 5 to 8. The improvement shown by each and every participant was amazing throughout the year. Whilst our emphasis is on teaching the kids the basics of cricket it‟s also about having fun, and something I believe we all, co-ordinators and kids alike had a firm grasp on for the season.

I would like to send my thanks to all the parents that pitched in and helped man the cones as the kids went about learning the basics. I would particularly like to thank Feroze for his skills on the BBQ, Andrew Parry, Bill Sier, Mick Ashbury, Michael Johnson, Adrian Brown , PD and young Adam for their continued support throughout the year. I will happily run the program again next year as it provides the foundations for the future of our club.

Till next year
