11 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I sat down several time to write this report for the 2010/2011 season. Every time I started, something came up or I got stuck starting. My biggest worry was that I would forget to acknowledge one of the many people who made this very crazy yet successful season able to happen. My apologies if I forget someone, but please be aware I appreciate everyone hard work and input in my first year as president.

Firstly I have to admit I did not know what to expect when taking on the job, and I don‟t think I knew how much work was involved. What I was really appreciative of was 2 of the greatest blokes to have at my right hand in Banga and Philo, whom without them to bounce thing off we would not have achieved what we did this year. Philo is not only Secretary of our club but also is GM cricket operations for the HDCA and once wrote in an email to me towards the end of the season “…the CBA was looking forward to the season finishing so that he could do some work for them”. Whilst Banga had a lot on at home this season he was always there for advice when I needed him and could not have done more for the club given his outside commitments.

This year started with the search for a new coach for the club. A coaching committee was formed and we interviewed 3 candidates for the position, all of whom would have been perfect to lead our great club. This being said we were really excited to be able to appoint Les Dhal to the position with whom came a wealth of cricketing knowledge and experience. Thanks to Geoff Place who spoke to Les initially and who continually sent me emails to get in contact with him. Congratulation Les on a wonderful year and I look forward to working with you again next season.

Once this appointment was made the committee had their first get together on a wintery night to Johnno‟s house. After a couple of cold beers and mouth burning party pies the years agenda was set out and plans pencilled in to start the projects that had been on the agenda for several years. These included a new main oval pitch and starting the construction on the new nets. This being in place we set ourselves a huge task of raising the funds required to complete these works which meant plenty of fundraising.

Steve Pinner lead the charge of the social committee who put on what could only be described as one of the biggest years of social events I have seen, from the Comedy Night, Gulliver‟s Day right through to the end of season Cocktail night all of the events were extremely well patronised which is a real credit to the guys involved, Well done to all.

All of this hard work off the field, including to receipt of some government and Cricket Victoria Grants (thank Philo and Steve) lead to the club being able to replace not only the main pitch but also the high school pitch giving the club one of the best facilities within the HDCA. This enabled us to not only host the 2nd grade grand final but also the 3rd grade one, a huge win fall for the club. Again a huge thanks to all of those that offered their services to run the canteen over that weekend, without whom we would not have been able to put on this massive event.

With all of this off field work going on it would be easy to think that our on field efforts may have suffered, quite the contrary, in what was the worst rain effected season for 10 years, with 2 of our 4 senior teams making finals including our 1st XI making the grand final for third time in as many years. A great effort with a many of the players playing in their first A grade grand final for our club. What was really exciting about this was that we got a glimpse of the future of our club and I think we are in safe hands. Congratulation to all involved across all of our teams this season, your efforts right from our 4th grade through to our 1st made it possible for us to field teams every weekend and for our club to again feature heavily in the finals. A great man once told me (in a selection meeting) “You cannot build a strong building without great foundations” (Beasty, 4th grade captain, season 2010/2011). Thanks to all of the Captains this year Occa, Johnno, Brian and Beasty, without your help and commitment this year‟s on field achievements would not have been possible.

Thanks to Geoff Place for once again looking after the junior side of the club fielding 8 teams this year with 3 teams making finals and two going on to make Grand Finals. I maintain that this level of participation in our junior ranks sets us on the path to being a strong club for the future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jed for all of his work over his many years of being our Junior Co-ordinator. With his last son finally progressing into the senior ranks Jed has indicated that he will be stepping down from this position. Your commitment will be missed and I am sure that your guidance for the person who steps into this position will be helpful, as they have big shoes to fill.

Jed also led our first ever Vets team on the field this season. From the game I was able to get to it really looked like a great team to be involved with. Whilst not being a serious as some of the other teams who were in the comp, our great depth within the club made our team very competitive in every game.

Thanks to Brad Bowler for running our Milo In-2-Cricket again this year. A fabulous achievement growing our number to being the biggest within the northern region.

Some wonderful achievements this year for our club included the following:

Replacement of both playing surfaces

12 Replacement of the floor coverings throughout the clubrooms (as a result of the rooms being not only flooded once, but three times) Re-painting of the rooms both inside and out Commencement of the replacement of the practice nets taking us from 2 nets to 5, which should really help with further development of our club.

Thanks once again to Daniel Barnes for his work with our sponsors without who we would not be in the position to achieve what we have this season. A lot of these sponsors committed to our club after coming out of some very tough economic times. A lot of our sponsors have been with us for many years and for this we are extremely grateful. Thank you to our major sponsors including Hocking Stuart, Bendigo Bank Heidelberg, Beck’s Bedding, Foxes Wealth, Mantello Holden and The Tower Hotel.

Thanks to all of the non-committee members who helped out this year around the club.

Lastly I would like to thank the committee consisting of Philo, Banga, Pins, Mumbles, Micky D, Tommy, Mull, Dlo, Jed, Johnno and Brian whom without their work none of the above would have happened. From your help on Thursday nights through to the big events and game days, even the smallest things you have done this year have not gone un-noticed or un-appreciated.

I am really looking forward to next season and reaping the reward of all of the hard work put in this season.

MICHAEL ASBURY PRESIDENT

SECRETARY’S REPORT

The club relies on a number of people that contribute to ensuring the administration and records of the club are well maintained.

A big thank you to Michael Delaney for all his work in completing the club‟s fortnightly newsletter “Howzat”, our long running publication for well over 20 years and eagerly devoured by the members each selection night. Micky was ably assisted by Steve Pinner on a couple of occasions who also upgraded the layout to a better look. With over 14 editions each season, Micky is very busy meeting the constant deadlines and his efforts go largely unnoticed. Well done champ.

Thank you to the four senior captains for their efforts in ensuring their scorebooks are maintained in good order and returned to me in a timely fashion each and every week for input. Whilst this is crucial in ensuring the club meets its compliance deadlines, more importantly this ensures that the club looks professional with match and player scores available for ready viewing on-line each week. Thanks also to senior captains for obtaining completed best & fairest vote cards each match. Thanks heaps to Jed Place for inputting all the junior scorebooks each match – a big job.

Thanks to Ando who maintains the official role as the club‟s historical stats keeper. Ando spends a lot of time each winter updating every player‟s records for the season passed, and provides great assistance on requests for historical playing information on any player past and present. Ando also updates and prints out all the club records and partnerships that you enjoy on the wall down at the club. Again, a big job and thank you Ando.

2010-11 was a watershed season for the club‟s cricket facilities with both centre wickets replaced with the most modern synthetic strip available plus the really big achievement in obtaining the necessary grant funds to finally upgrade the practice nets facility. In this task we were very grateful to receive the wonderful support and assistance of Banyule City Councillor Jenny Mulholland (Alex‟s Mum) without whom it may not have been possible. As this report goes to publication work has commenced on 3 brand new full length nets (25 metres) and upgrade of the two existing nets to same length. By pre-season we will have 5 full length concrete nets all with new synthetic practice wickets that match the surfaces on the centre wickets. The club has worked for many years to get this funding and will offer unmatched playing and practice facilities to our members of all ages that will be the envy of other clubs.

The association that we play in (HDCA) is going through some interesting times. Many will have heard that the HDCA executive along with the executives of our neighbouring associations DVCA & NMCA spent the last 12 months exploring options to improve all aspects of cricket in the Northern Region by joining forces under one cricket league (Northern Cricket League – NCL). Recently however these plans were scuppered by the DVCA clubs who voted against the direction of their own executive to maintain their own league rather than join the NCL. The HDCA is a viable association in its own right but suffers from a lack of depth in its lower grades and the higher age junior grades. It will be interesting to observe developments and upcoming club discussions as to what direction the HDCA should take.

Well done to Mick Asbury on a terrific first year as President. An inspired choice in succession planning by outgoing President Marty Phillips has been rewarded with an immensely dedicated volunteer who has worked very hard for the club‟s members. A special mention for Mick‟s efforts with Thursday Night dinners, the players have never been better fed – no more pizzas.!!

I hope you all enjoy receiving the club bulletin emails sent frequently during the cricket season and please let me know if addresses change or if you know of a past player that we can add.

Don‟t forget the club‟s AGM on the 3/8/11 and the club is always appreciative of help on the committee if you‟re interested.

Go Bears!!

TREASURERS REPORT & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE BANYULE CRICKET CLUB INC.

The final result for the year ended 30 April 2011 was a surplus of $2,464. This is a solid result for the season highlighted by the following:

$3,458 on the loan repayment to the council, for the renovations to the Merv Anderson Pavilion. In April the final payment for the loan was made, some 7 months early. We are now debt free. Fundraising was a vast improvement on previous seasons; a great time was had by all. On the financial front we made solid profit on the sale of memorabilia, the $1,000 raffle and the cocktail party. Poor weather resulting in wash outs on Saturdays reduced our bar staff requirement, unfortunately it significantly increased our cleaning costs. The club also paid for the bar staff for the breast cancer function. Balls were again a significant cost to the club with $3,668 being spent on match day and practice balls; however this was lower than previous seasons due to the wash outs. Utilities were again a major expenditure. With the size of the rooms and the frequency of the usage $4,403 was spent, the majority of this being for electricity. Electricity increased 40% on last season. Membership levels remained constant from last season. Sponsorship continues to be a major source of income to the club. All our major sponsors remained with the club as well as the addition of a couple more. The total takings for sponsorship were $11,250 an increase on last year. Our player sponsors were down 98% on last season. We received a grant from Cricket Victoria for the new nets of $3K. Bar turnover was lower than previous seasons, but still maintained a 43% margin, consistent with previous seasons. A new president saw the re-introduction of a few free drinks for 4 wins! This season has seen unprecedented costs on improvements to our facilities. We have spent $2K on a new sound system, $1.5K on painting of the rooms, $650 on new water proof flooring, $1.4K to the board of management for minor repairs. The board of management costs will be ongoing.

The budget for the 2010/11 season was for a profit of $2,663. We are marginally under this target which is a fantastic result given the improvements that have been made to our facilities.

The club is in a much improved position following the finalisation of the loan and the improved facilities. The committee is in the process of finalising the plans for our new upgraded nets which will significantly improve our training facilities. The cost of these nets will mostly be covered by grants and the club, a small one off levy may be required from the members to cover the remainder of the cost. Given the extra ordinary season we had it was a fantastic result for the club.

Again special mentions to the various helpers out there that makes my job a little easier. Thanks to Mull for his assistance and collecting monies on Thursdays and Saturdays. A huge effort from D Lo again in the sponsorship department, l think l say it every year but the club would struggle to exist without the support of our sponsors. Thanks to D Lo for his sourcing and co ordination of this. Thanks to Doc for his social organisation this season, our events were fantastic and we managed to make some good profit on some of the events which is a bonus. Thanks to Mumbles for work organising the bar, may have been more work than he expected but he did a great job taking over from Butts. Philo continues to do a power of work for our club, the association and various others. Thanks Philo for your valuable input throughout the season. Thanks to the rest of the committee for their various assistance this year. Lastly on the club front a huge thanks to Mick for his support. He did a remarkable job in his first season as president. Mick spent far too many hours at the club; hopefully he can get more of a chop out from others next season.

Lastly l would like to thank Kym for her support this season. She probably had enough going on without me taking off to our countless meetings or to get down to the club to collect membership and have a beer and leaving her with Harvey. Your understanding and support is very much appreciated.

SOCIAL VP’S REPORT

Social Report- 2010/11 Social activities during season 2010/11 aimed to provide opportunities for all members, families and guests to enjoy the great company and facilities that the Banyule CC has to offer. The calendar of events was scheduled so that members and their families were not overwhelmed with events too often and attendances could be maximised as a result.

Unfortunately with the constant weather interruptions to the cricket season, some events on the social calendar suffered numbers wise and the contribution of social events to the club finances were not what we had hoped.

Having said that, a number of our events were huge successes, the biggest being the Comedy & Auction Night where we not only enjoyed a fantastic night of laughs and entertainment but the club benefitted significantly financially. Highlights being Pommy Johnson‟s insights into the costs of improved OH&S in the work place and the bidding war between members of the Barnes family for a piece of Collingwood memorabilia. A special thanks to all of those who sourced donations for the main and silent auction, which provided an opportunity for guests to go home with a bargain.

Another great success was our end of season Cocktail Night, where the ‟Something Wicked‟ Cocktail company were hired to provide all guests with some „Cyril‟ (delicious) cocktails. A great turn out and some ripping tunes ensured a belter of a night was enjoyed by all.

A significant addition to the social calendar was the engagement of Bread & Butta Catering to provide Thursday Night Selection Dinners throughout the season. The themed nights (together with Philo‟s culturally informative emails) provided club members with delectable hot meals and sometimes exposed players to new dining experiences (Occa found a whole new world outside of schnitzels for example). Thanks to Mick Asbury for organising this and ensuring that each selection night had a series of dishes to look forward to.

The Merv Anderson Pavilion hosted the Annual BCC Presentation night for the first time in a number of years. Thanks again to Bread & Butta Catering, all guests were treated to a beautiful three course meal whilst Occa won another club championship award and Rowdy took home the coveted Graeme Renshaw Award. A highlight being Gordo winning the 4th grade bowling award and best speech of the evening.

Other events on the calendar included the Welcome Back BBQ, Halloween Night, Christmas Party, Australian Day Celebration and of course, the End of Season Trip to Coogee Bay.

A grateful thanks to all committee members who gave their time during various social events to set up, source prizes, organise external providers, run raffles, man the bar, cook food and every other duty that goes to run a successful event. A very special thanks to John Veal for another superb performance in the red suit &to Kym Butterworth and Danie O‟Connor for organising all the presents for the kids for the Christmas Party.

In 2011/12 we hope to really raise the bar in terms of social events and ask for the support of all members and their families.

COACHES’ REPORT

It was pleasing to see player development in all levels at Banyule in season 2010/11 with all teams showing improvement and a competitive approach. There were many juniors as well as senior players who have breathed life into the coming seasons. Youngsters such as Michael Hannan, Jordan Samad and Henry Tyler are good examples of players who took the most of their opportunities in the top grade and gained valuable finals experience. These boys are just a small sample of the talent across all grades that exist at our club. Our younger players are blessed being able to train and play alongside some of the legends of the competition. Players such as Occa, Rowdy and Philo are also to be applauded for the persistence and unwavering loyalty they have shown as club leaders.

Our work ethic at training was positive and will definitely improve our match performances in all elevens. No doubt our new facilities will further inspire us all to work harder on the track. All sports training should be approached in the same manner as you would approach matches. Although cricket is one of the most difficult sports in which to simulate match conditions, there are individual challenges that can be set in your own mind in the nets or at centre wicket that can improve your efforts under pressure. It is important we keep building on this. Training sessions are also the window to the club if you consider new players coming down to Banyule. If training is switched on, busy and people are working in a constructive manner, newcomers will be enthused to jump on board.

The goals and standards you set yourself are also very important. Never be accepting of mediocrity and always strive to do that something extra special. I often use the example of Ricky Ponting leaving the field after making his second hundred of the match in his hundredth test. Rather than a look of jubilation and satisfaction, he was disgusted with himself as the fall of his wicket was crucial in the context of the game. Certainly many older cricketers wish they could have their time over again and „make hay while the sun shines” so to speak. If opportunities arise next year we need to grasp them with both hands. It‟s important we get players taking 5-6 wickets or getting hundreds. Let‟s all back ourselves to be the one who can change a game and not leave it to the next person.

In concluding I would like to thank all players at the club for their support and enthusiasm. Shaun O‟Connor, Tom Woodman and Ryan Hartnett were also invaluable with their support on training nights. The girls/partners should also not go without mention as their contribution socially and supporting is enormous. To the outstanding committee at our club lead by Mick Asbury, I extend enormous gratitude as they are a very supportive and professional group of people who have the best interests of the club and players at heart. I have no doubt we are the envy of many other clubs because of our support network. I congratulate all trophy winners and Captains for their tireless efforts and positive approach on game day.

I look forward to the coming season and the challenges that we will overcome as a club.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Another one bites the dust

Well the head line says it all, so close yet so far. Well it‟s been 3 months now since being defeated in the grand final and is still hurting just thinking about it. I would have to say I am very proud of our performances in the final series and regrettably were beaten by a better side on the day. Let‟s reflect back on the season it was. A new era was starting at the BCC with the ever green Michael Asbury taking over from Gary Lyon as the chief. With sleepless nights looking for a new coach he prized the great scalp in Les Dahl to lead the troops into the upcoming season. Departures from our first X1 Jeff Wilson (Kids), Darren Butterworth (Beer), Tim Veal & Andy Clapton retirement. Arrivals Les Dahl (Coach) Graeme Bennett, (Essendon) & Mick Hannan (Mid Year, Camberwell) We started the pre season in fine form with numbers growing by each session, there were a lot of young players keen to put their hand up to play in the firsts by applying themselves on the training track. These included Tom woodman, Henry Tyler, Jordan Samad, Dane watts & Phil Barnes. It was a bit of a mix bag in our first 4 games lost the first game but beat Rosebank in a rain affected match which meant a lot to our club. The last game before Xmas was a memorable one when we took on an undefeated Rosanna at the bear cave on a beautiful pitch. We managed a modest total of only 78 and knew we had the bowling fire to defend it if we stuck to our plan. Overnight we had Rosanna reeling at 6-28 and in damage control. The next Saturday we took 10 overs in wet conditions to roll them for 40. Going into Xmas we were sitting equal second and in control for another assault come finals. After Xmas everything was going well Mick Hannan was bowling great lines Shaun O'Connor was looking solid with the bat especially before XMAS, Graeme Bennett was taking everything behind the stumps with some special catches and the fielding was improving. Ryan was looking really comfortable as an opener with some great assistance by the young les Dahl. Jordan & Henry started to feel like they belong with some cameo knocks and some brilliant fielding. We had a fantastic win against Edinburgh away when we were in trouble at 6 for 40 before a couple of great individual knocks from Rowdy & Philo and than Socca coming from repat hitting 3 off the last ball to win while sitting in a wheelchair.

Leading into the finals we were all very confident with our structures and the belief to win from any position, which is very important.

Semi final rematch against Rosebank. All week I was telling the troops we needed to bowl first and get into the top order but everyone was against it and lucky for me we lost the toss and bowled. Rowdy decided to dislocate his finger in the warm up for something different, there are other ways to get out of warm ups rowdy. Ball 3 wicket rowdy knocks over the stumps great start, by the 10th over we had them 2 for 10 and on top. There big guns were trying to settle in but we gave them nothing great bowling by all and Micky picked up the big one with Philo bowling fantastic from the other end. At tea we had them in deep trouble at 6 for 50. We ended up rolling them for 76 and everyone bowled fantastic, Dlo looked very sharp and hitting form at the right time. Fielding was the best it‟s been. By the end of day 1 we were in a great position at 4 for 60 and in control. Rain threatened the next day but it come to late with the crazy bears in control all day, amassing 7 for 170 before the heavens opened up, great partnerships was the key with Henry and Ryan making some crucial knocks. Great to win away from home and also to embarrass the side who embarrassed us in the previous GF.

Grand final Banyule vs. Rosanna Day 1 Rosanna finished on top for a reason a very discipline side, great batting depth and a terrific mix of bowling with great fielding. Beautiful day was forecast all we need to do is win the toss and bat, come on tails never fails, unsuccessfully it wasn't my call and it fell on tails and Rosanna batted first. We were a little bit nervous in the field by giving them a couple of over throws, but as long as we keep attacking the ball it will turn around. We had them in trouble for most of the day and looked in control but as we knew there batting line up had great depth and it showed by being in trouble at 6 for 140 to being 9 for 206 at the close of play on Day 1. Once again batting overs is so crucial. Everyone bowled really well and bowled in great partnerships maybe our fielding wasn't the best it‟s been and unfortunately may have given them around 15- 20 runs.

Day 2

19 Chasing 200 plus in a grand final isn't the easiest thing to do but we had the belief we can achieve anything, if we stick to the structures. The most important thing we wanted to achieve was to be no more than 2 or 3 wickets at tea and we unfortunately lost a wicket just before tea but were still in a strong position to chase down the target. At tea we were 3 for 50 (42), Les batted brilliantly and GB was looking very solid going into tea. After tea the plan was not lose a wicket in the first 10 overs, young Jordan opened up his arms and was looking damaging but a couple of consecutive wickets in the 55th to 60th overs had us in a bit of trouble at 5 for 70. Enter Wildman (Shaun O'Connor) from the bull pen, knew that we needed to get on with it this suited Shaun down to the tee. With wickets falling around him Shaun batted beautifully and put us back in the game with a quick 45 off as many balls with a six over cover that will always be talked about for a long time. Unfortunately wickets kept coming with some very tight bowling and we unfortunately fell short by 20 runs. As mentioned earlier maybe our fielding cost us 10 - 15 runs, which in the end might of bit us on the arse.

Highlight performances for season 2010-11 Graeme Bennett an excellent year with the gloves and a strong performance with the bat in the GF, welcome home. Shaun O'Connor, fantastic knock in the GF and it showed by the hard work and dedication you put in all year by winning the batting trophy. To Rowdy fantastic year again with the ball an average of 9 outstanding, to all the other bowlers‟ terrific performances all year everyone shall hold their heads high once again. Well done also to the great man on his 600th wicket. To our baby boomers Jordan, Henry and Mick Hannan congratulations on playing in a grand final for Banyule A grade, exciting times ahead can‟t wait until next season. . Special thanks to the following To Steve pinner and Dlo as my vice captains thank you for your hard work especially on match days, a special thanks to Dlo for organising match days with stumps and marking the lines, also another thanks to Ryan my iceman on game days. To all the other captains well done on a great year it was a very difficult year for selection but we all weathered the storm. To Mick Asbury congratulations on debut as president a thankless job, but everyone is right behind you and you led from the front and stood tall when counted excellent job mate backed up by a great committee. Finally to Les Dahl, BCC coach it‟s been a fantastic year working with you and feeding off your talent and experience. To all the BCC players make sure you get as much coaching and learning from Les as it will only make you a better player, Les has so much to offer and it would be diabolical for our club not to pick his brain and work him twice as hard next year. Well done on a great year Les. Regards

B GRADE

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

After having the previous season off, I was honoured to be given the privilege of once again captaining the Second Grade. With various retirements, players on a sabbatical and those who were exploring greener pastures from the previous season, it was going to provide opportunities to a range of players who had either established themselves across the past couple of seasons or even for some developing juniors, the chance to progress into the 1st grade, for which the 2nd was going to provide the platform for those to find form and prove themselves.

In what became a challenging year, we ended up using a total of 26 players across the season, for which we had:

3 players make their 2nd grade debut 16 out of the 26 players used were under the age of 24 4 of the top 5 run scorers for the season were under the age of 20 4 of the top 5 wicket takers for the season were under the age of 24

I know it‟s very easy to read statistic‟s in a way that suits your argument, but one of the big things that came out of the season for me, was the development of the younger players, which are the future of the club. Not simply around how many runs or wickets they‟ve taken, but in how to play this wonderful game in an aggressive, competitive manner, no matter what the game situation is.

Whilst we lost more games than we won and ended up 7th on the ladder, we were competitive in most of those losses, but I genuinely feel we were able to take away some positives from each of these games.

Amongst those losses, some of the key wins that were fantastic for the club and those who played an integral part within were:

Against Heidelberg (away) where Sam Place starring with the ball and Arjun Arora and Henry Tyler batting us to victory Against Rosanna (away), where we batted all day to make 7/272, with Jordan Samad and Sam Norman scoring 60% of the runs between them, and to bowl Rosanna out on the 2nd day before the rain came, so that the previous weeks work was not wasted Against Edinburgh (home), where batting 1st and being 5/30 to then make 9/153 (40-overs) thanks to a 72 from Henry Tyler and keeping them to 8/150 (40-overs), with the metronomic Marcus Kernaghan taking 4/19 (8).

As mentioned earlier, we used a total of 26-players and across the journey, every single player contributed in some way or another, but I thought I‟d quickly mention a couple of individuals:

Henry Tyler: Is an aspiring keeper, who could also hold his own as a specialist batsman was fantastic behind the stumps throughout the games he played with the team. His glove work is exceptional, but also his desire and attitude to win is a fantastic example for his peers. In relation to his batting, he was able to consistently make runs when required, with the standout being a belligerent 72 when all those around him had failed. Henry has the potential to become an integral player within the 1st grade

Jordan Samad: Jordan was still eligible to play juniors, and continued to do so, whilst balancing his workload within a mixture of both 1st & 2nd grade games. He came second in the run aggregate, for which he only played 5 games, with the standout being a superb 93 against Rosanna. The real key to Jordan was his level head and ability to block out the opposition and play his own game. Jordan too, has the opportunity to become a key member in the long term success of the mighty Bears.

Daine Watts: Daine‟s statistics do not set the world on fire, but his role within the team when we‟re fielding as the barometer is second to none. His ability to read the play whilst the batsman is playing his shot is brilliant, as is the ability to cover the ground quickly to get to the ball creates pressure and opportunity for the other 10 guys around him. With an aggregate of 101 runs across he the year, it doesn‟t reflect a couple of key batting performances where he held up an end when those before him had fallen by the wayside, with none more important than a 25 over innings against East Ivanhoe to help us seal a critical win. With further 1 on 1 development with his batting and some more self belief, a Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding will grow as a cricketer in the next 2-3 years.

Some other special mentions go out to Luke Delaney who in his 1st full season as a bowler showed some real development and promise, Sam Norman who displayed that he too has the potential to develop into a good all-rounder. Scott Clapton who was at times simply too quick and bouncy for our 2nd grade competitors, whom I‟d personally love to

22 see take a big step next year and dominate the 1st grade and Arjun Arora who display‟s immense talent, and with some more consistency will become an important player for either the 1st or 2nd grade team work up or remain at the top of the ladder.

Well done to Henry Tyler who won the batting trophy, Daine Watts for winning the fielding trophy and Marcus Kernaghan who didn‟t have his normal season with the bat (against his usual standards) was able to win the bowling trophy.

On a personal note, I‟d like to thank Banyule Cricket Club who means so much to me as a player and a person for once again giving me the privilege of captaining the 2nd grade, and especially to those players who represented the team. It was a pleasure to lead you into battle, for which I thank you all for your support.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

The 2010/11 cricket season finally began for the 3rds on October 30 after rain caused the first game to be called off. This became a bit of a trend for the season with around 6 days being lost to rain. This brought the ladders very close together for the duration of the season with only 8 points separating 2nd and 6th by the end of the season. With only 3 losses, the boys really deserved their 2nd place finish at the end of the home and away season.

There were a number of highlights for the season not least of which was the emergence of a young fast bowler by the name of Cory Parrant, his 17 wickets at 11.47 was a fantastic contribution. Cory‟s pace got better and better as the season progressed having many a batsman jumping. Rhys Bevan had a great season with the ball for a “non bowler” (had to keep him in the side somehow). Rhys took 21 wickets at 12, he bowled with consistent pace all season really leading the way in our attack.

Our batting let us down a little this year, only 2 team scores over 150 for the season, highest being 9/183. There were only 2 half centuries scored in the season which is not enough. Luckily we were able to get out of jail a few times with tight fielding and bowling.

After finishing 2nd on the ladder we faced Rosebank in a Semi-Final to be played on our main ground, a wonderful opportunity for the boys to soak up the home crowd advantage. Unfortunately our batting let us down again, being bowled out for 75 in a semi was heart breaking after the wonderful season that we had.

I would like to thank the committee for their support throughout the season, especially when it came to selections. Les Dahl was of great assistance throughout the year; his assistance with the 3rds was unparalleled. It is this first time in many years that I have seen so much input from a coach to the lower grades, this was much appreciated by all players but especially those younger kids that are striving to achieve their best. Thank you Les! Thanks to Beasty for keeping selection an interesting and at times fiery event, even from another country you still seem to be able to throw in your 2 cents worth, very entertaining. A big thank you to the senior players in the 3rds who assisted throughout the season, your input is so valuable and always welcomed.

In a season that saw us use 28 different players including 8 juniors, we achieved a great deal. To witness the development of the likes of Cory Parrant, Brad Moore and Will Barnes was fantastic. I was very proud of the way in which all players represented the club this year; there were no issues, no cards, not even any complaints. You did yourselves proud boys, here‟s to an even better 2011/12 season.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

This year was not one of missed opportunities as I had stated last year, but one where we got a little carried away with the fun of playing together and not focus on the job at hand. The rain interrupted games before XMAS, the, lack of player availability, the bye in the last round and simply 4th Grade not taking its chances when it had them cost us dearly. We were not close to making the finals and so from a performance standpoint a lacklustre effort; however there were many positives to be drawn out from this season. The two standout performances were that of Gordo for his bowling and two junior players who made their appearance in 4th Grade (Jack Veal, William Barnes).

Once again there were highlights and lowlights from every player who donned the Banyule cap and some of the more memorable ones include: Skull‟s 17 ball over in the first game. Oddly enough it may not be a highlight for the big fella but it was for all of us watching, but seriously his fielding and catching an inspiration to all of us. Gordo collecting $15- on a one day game (when it was $10- ) and paying the umpire all of it when it should been $100-. Puppeteer turning up every week late to the game due to his Friday night shenanigans. Waheed for his great start to the year and then getting smacked in the chops thus ending a very successful season. The Barnes boys (William and Greg) for their batting and bowling prowess right through the season. Greg missing out twice on claiming a wicket 1st ball of the match. Butts with his fill in role – whilst jetting off to Thailand for much needed R&R. Yarni for his superb batting and even better bowling “the Greek God almost snagged a hat-trick”! Ian Cugley for his great tenacity and endurance each game and never giving up & for his running b/w wickets.… Funky for his wicket keeping and his genuine stumping which had us all in awe. Papa Clapton making his 2010/11 debut in 2011 after XMAS… Plugga “a.k.a. B. Bowler” for filling in, in fact it was not filling in, he played pretty much all season. Philo not getting a wicket in 4th Grade when he filled in.

There were many other memorable highlights also for the season – including the filling in from notable past players (Philo, Fezza, Usher, Scooby, Nick, Ando, Andy Clapton, etc…) demonstrating that a great club spirit still exists. Along with this was the highlight each selection of trying to get players from emails, phone calls and calling upon favours to fill teams, and we never missed a game short of players as everyone helped.

I also want to recognize and thank my fellow captains from Occa, Johnno, Brian and Mick “3rd Grade”, the committee, president and all other members for this club. A special mention to Les Dahl our coach who has done a tremendous job in building a foundation for the future of the club with many junior players getting the opportunity to play senior cricket and being promoted on merit. His quiet demeanour and un-assuming style was great to watch and experience.

Finally – I would like to thank all the players who represented 4th Grade this year, a great honour to play with you and for you. Let‟s make every post a winner in season 2011/12.

VETS GRADE

Veterans Report

It was a pleasure to Captain the inaugural Banyule vets team. We were very unlucky not to play finals. A one run loss to Heidelberg and a poor batting chase against Edinburgh really cost us. It cost us in the sense that we could have played more than our 6 allotted home and away games.

We were about having fun and giving everyone the opportunity to bat and bowl; not chasing Premierships. We really need 13 players to play a game due to sore backs and strained hamstrings and we managed to get this magical number by the end of the season.

Can I thank every one of the 24 oldies who played this year, the camaraderie was fantastic and the lack of egos was a pleasure to deal with. We all played in the correct spirit in that we were “has beens” out for some fun; as did most clubs. We actually beat the eventual Premiers in the final home and away game who were playing their full finals team.

One of the best aspects of playing every second Sunday is that you have time to recover. Best of all though, it gave a few dads of our juniors the opportunity to show their sons that their old man still has it and also gave us an excuse to catch up with some of our ex- Banyule mates who had succumbed to the demands of domestication and had stopped playing cricket.

JUNIOR COORDINATORS REPORT

Juniors Report

Thank you to all of our Junior Coaches, we had a successful season in that all bar one of our 5 competition teams played finals and once again we managed to run 3 Under 11 teams. The vote of confidence from our parents was obvious with great attendances at both our Coaches Night and Presentation Nights. Obviously we couldn‟t field teams without our great Coaches and I would like to mention each of them individually. As a collective they are very low maintenance and make my job much easier. Thank you also to those numerous parents who help out each week.

Under 11 White – Brad and Lindsay Russell, the dynamic duo; these two have been coaching at this level for years now and there would hardly be a Banyule Junior who hasn‟t had Brad as their coach sometime during their fledgling career. He is great in instilling the basics and getting their techniques correct, right from the outset. Brad is a legend of our club having played non-stop at our club since 1971.

Under 11 Maroon - Dale Mayne coached these boys last season too, and his wife Bec organised us a team of Eltham basketballers who have quite a bit of talent amongst them. Mayney is unique and his laid back approach is just what kids need. He is always positive and his enthusiasm is infectious.

Under 11 Blue – Micky Harte has coached for 3 seasons and his teaching background comes to the fore, he is patient and great at getting his message across to the lads. Mick is no fuss and like Brad, he is an ex-senior Banyule premiership Captain and understands the ethos of our club. His team are primed to play Competition cricket next season.

Under 13 Maroon – Adam Docherty is young man in his first season of coaching who took over a team of boys who really didn‟t know each other too well. He quickly developed a rapport with the lads and had them working as a well united team and enjoying themselves and their cricket. They were unlucky not to have played in a Grand Final.

Under 13 Blue–Rowan Malcolm like Mick Harte, has a teaching background and his patience, preparation and encouragement was always evident both at training and match nights. Rowan put a lot of effort into his training drills to ensure the boys had plenty of variety and plenty of practice.

Under 15–Russell Laws is the most experience Coach we have, he has played at district level and Coached senior players as well as various representative teams at junior levels. Russell is big on getting technique right and not focussing on winning. Russell‟s philosophy is what we are about at Banyule, producing quality juniors with the correct technique and a sense of fair play who will take their cricket further.

Under 17 – Ryan Hartnett is also a teacher. Ryan plays in our club‟s 1st XI and having a young former junior at the helm of our oldest junior team is fantastic, he has been so important in helping these boys make the transition from junior cricket to seniors. Ryan is passionate about his cricket and our club and this passion to play hard but fair is something he helps instil into our players.

COACH’S REPORT

The Banyule Under 17 Gold Team enjoyed a highly successful season during 2010/11 despite falling at the final hurdle and finishing runners up in a gallant effort. The team came together from an array of different places, with boys stepping from our Under 15‟s, boys continuing on from last year‟s Under 17‟s plus some imports who play Seniors elsewhere, including several District and Sub-District clubs. Corey Parrant, a Banyule junior player from last year‟s Under 17 team who has also represented the senior club immediately stamped himself as a leader and put his hand up to captain the side, which is an indication of his competitive spirit. Corey was ably supported by Jordan Samad, a first year Under 17 player who also represented the Banyule 1st eleven throughout the 2010/11 season as Vice-Captain. In my position as coach, a number of objectives were set for the season;

- Improve cricket skills and confidence of the boys through everyone getting a chance to play a role; bowl, bat and or in the field. - Allow Corey and Jordan to develop their captaincy skills and tactical knowledge by encouraging them to make decisions in the field whilst playing an active role in batting orders, etc. - Prepare the boys for senior cricket through encouraging a competitive spirit that always adheres to the spirit of the game - Have fun and develop a lifelong love of the game and forge some lifelong friendships - Have a successful year on field

After an unconvincing first half of the season, the team began to gel and individual and team performances began to improve dramatically. Some of the individual highlights for the season were;

- Jeff Mitchell taking upon the responsibility to open the bowling for the season. - Shane Doherty batting at an average of 22 and taking 6 wicket at 17.83, and generally being a pest to his team mates - Michael Italia making 193 runs at 24.13 and getting so fired up at stages (Lower Plenty) that his face was undistinguishable from his hair - James Alexandrov taking 9 wickets at 10.78, and taking upon the responsibility to open the batting towards the top end of the season - Jordan Samad making 199 at 28.43 including two half centuries, one being a clutch innings in the Grand Final - Brad Moore taking upon the responsibility to play as the teams all-rounder, opening the batting in one innings and making 16 and often bowling at first change - Corey Parrant leading the side competitively and being involved in 4 run outs throughout the season - Nick Gillies explosive T20 innings and taking 9 wickets at 9.11 - Ejaaz Alavi taking 16 wickets at 6.81 with best figures of 5/19, and Ejaaz winning the competition bowling award. - Matt Cottier handling the gloves and leading the slips cordon, taking 13 catches and hitting 113 runs - Tom Goulding hitting 145 runs at 24.17 including a clutch half century in the Semi Final

The most encouraging thing from my point of view was the camaraderie that the boys developed, and the increased preparedness, competitiveness and professionalism the boys demonstrated as the season progressed which allowed them to get so close to bringing home a Grand Final win. With a large majority of this team staying together next season, as well as some very good under 15 boys coming up, a chance for the ultimate success is a real possibility. Thanks to the support of all parents, especially Paul Cottier, The Parrants', Almaaz Alavi and Ann Alexandrov who were always around to help out with training, scoring, BBQ‟ing, manning the canteen and looking after the team when I was unavailable. I wish the boys all the best in their studies/footy during the year and look forward to seeing them back at the club next season socially or to win the flag we just missed out on this year. Go Bears!

COACH’S REPORT

Banyule Under 17 Green

We had a pretty successful season in the Under 17 Maroon side. Playing for a spot in the Grand Final we lost our way slightly and narrowly lost our Semi-final to Rosanna-Viewbank by bowling too many extras. Life is a continual learning curve and I hope our boys take away something from the loss that will improve their game in the future. They are a great bunch of boys I really enjoyed coaching them because their enthusiasm to play cricket was infectious. They enjoyed each other‟s successes and were eager to work on any deficiencies in their game at training. These are great attributes to have for players who wish to keep playing and getting better.

Pat Lunn had a fine season, his bowling was tight and he won our Batting trophy with several notable performances batting at first drop. Pat McKinlay bowled well and took out our Bowling averages, he is thinking batsman and takes a great catch. Jed Place bowled better and better as the season progressed and took vital wicket s in the Semi Final. He is very supportive in the field and has a good throwing arm Paul Hoang, had a great year bowling his off spin. Paul took the second most wickets for us and came runner-up to Paddy McKinlay in the bowling. Colby Somogyi really blossomed with his leadership as the year progressed. He kept well all year and was always encouraging to his team mates. He captained our side well. Cam Ataryniw missed a few matches with a back injury and was not able to bowl as he would have liked. He was a steady and patient batsman who passion for cricket was obvious. Jordan Prasad bowled well this season and his batting improved out of sight, highlighted by his semi final innings. Jordan is keen to learn and listens to advice. Matt Molony was easily the biggest improver in the club. His left arm pace bowling progressed to such a point he was a first change bowler in our final. He has a great throwing arm too. Connor Lennox played some important innings this season and has the safest pair of catching hands in the team. I like Connor‟s keenness to play cricket and his 20/20 batting was made to order. Kane Moore returned to our team and his influence was immediately noticeable. He opened our batting and was a reliable bowler when given the ball. He provided great stability to our team. Nick Bates opened our batting and bowling and was fantastic. His hard hitting and the bounce he generates with the ball had him as one of our players the opposition feared the most. A great season Nick Rian Brown is the ultimate team player. He will bat in any position he is asked to, and puts great value on his wicket. His control of his in-swingers improved markedly and he is one of the most reliable fielders in the team Ben Stevenson missed a few matches with a broken toe. He still attended training and showed what a solid clubman he is. Ben‟s patient left handed batting at the beginning of our innings is invaluable and his slips fielding is superb.

Can I take this opportunity to thank some of our parents for their support as well as parenting such fine young men. Paula Lennox was our scorer, provider of food and generally a surrogate mum to all our boys. Thanks Paula, your help was invaluable. Craig Bates was our scorer, in reserve and team photographer. Wes Stevenson and Julie Prasad ran our canteen at home games.

We should again have another 2 Under 17 teams next season and I look forward to those eligible players to return. Well done to Paul Hoang, Jed Place, Kane Moore and Colby Somogyi who have now finished their junior careers and I look forward to seeing them all play senior cricket next season.

COACH’S REPORT

Under 15 Report

Our team this season was very much a bottom-aged side. To play in a Grand Final was a fantastic achievement. Our real Grand Final was beating Heidelberg in the last over the previous week in the Semi Final when our last batting pair of Michael Dundovich (5 no.) and Jake Smith (57 no.) gave their all to see that we passed the very respectable Heidelberg score of 129. It was a remarkable game and it is something the boys will always remember as a special victory.

Well done to our Captain Jake Smith for winning the batting averages narrowly beating Zac Tolley who had his best season. Jake and Zac both batted very well for the HDCA representative team too.

Mitchell Brown, Brayden Sier, Dale Rodda and Christopher Van Dyke all played some very valuable innings throughout the summer.

We began the season with 15 boys and it is often difficult to play them all and give them the match exposure to improve their cricket but to their credit they all trained hard and made the most of their opportunities.

Our bowling was quite solid and we had great variety. Jake Smith won our bowling averages with an average of 8.88. Mitch Lee was unfortunate that he didn‟t qualify by bowling enough overs because he too bowled well enough to have an average just a fraction below that of Jake‟s.

Brayden Sier and Ethan Knight both had a of 10.4, followed by Dan Pederick ; Brad Laws, Marcus Jones, Dale Rodda and Jeremy Jones all with bowling averages of 16 and under. It shows the depth and quality of our bowling when 9 players in the same side can have a bowling average below 16.

Our fielding at times was brilliant, Mitch Brown kept wicket very well and sets the standard for the rest to follow. Brayden has a very safe pair of hands as does Marcus and Michael.

Finally I would like to thank the following parents for their support. Mark Jones is always available at training and makes my job a lot easier helping to organise the boys or finish training when I have to leave early. Thank you Joe & Wendy Sier, Simon & Amanda Smith, Steve & Kendra Tolley, Glen & Cathy Pederick, Charles Jones & Amanda, Jamie& Kay Brown, John & Maree Dundovich, Peter & Sophie Knight, Joe & Kathryn Van Dyke, Mark & Karen Rodda and Leanne Cain. Although some of you may not really think that you contribute a lot, I know that your son really appreciates you watching them and your camaraderie and positive comments are always welcome.

COACH’S REPORT

Banyule Cricket Club U13 Gold Season Review

The 2010/11 cricket season was a very enjoyable experience for the U13 Gold team and I really enjoyed coaching this terrific group of boys. Although we didn‟t play finals this season, we competed very well and there was a great deal of development and improvement from the group. The wet summer we experienced made it difficult to get any real continuity with our cricket but the boys were very positive and enthusiastic throughout the season, always attended training and worked to improve as cricketers.

We started off the season with a team of medium pace and fast bowlers but by season‟s end we had 2 boys bowling leg spin and 2 bowling off spin. We also had 3 different wicketkeepers during the season that all performed very well and all players were shuffled up and down the batting order to experience different batting positions – not one player ever complained about being moved around and it was great to see the boys‟ team spirit.

Thanks to the parent group for their support throughout the season – it was great to see all the parents at the games and getting involved with the various tasks that helped make the season run smoothly. Special thanks to Julie Gardiner who took on the role of Team Manager and organised scoring and umpiring rosters for the season. Thanks also to Steve McGinness, Grant Gardiner, Fraser Neilson and Mick Asbury for their assistance with coaching the boys during the season. Thanks also to Geoff Place for his assistance and support throughout the season.

Congratulations to the trophy winners for the season and to Bailey Neilson and Callum Asbury for being selected in the Mitchell Shield representative team this year also

Ethan Appleby Developed well as a leg spinner and wicket keeper and also fielded very well Callum Asbury Consistently dangerous bowler who also made important runs Bryce Gardiner Dangerous bowler who worked hard all season Dale Holly Playing his first season of cricket and improved enormously. Always listened to instructions Luke McGinness Great competitor who bowled, batted and fielded very enthusiastically Ryan Malcolm Batted and kept wickets very well and took some great catches in the field. Nathanael Mancev Batted well all season and bowled very consistently Jordan Miller Bowled particularly well late in the season and fielded well Bailey Neilson All rounder who batted well and displayed good potential as a bowler. Adam Samad Batted particularly well and displayed great potential as a leg spinner Cameron Smith Genuine all rounder – batted well and displayed ability to swing the ball. Great attitude Calder Wallace Showed great improvement throughout season with bat and ball

Trophy Winners Batting: Ryan Malcolm Bowling: Bryce Gardiner Fielding: Luke McGinness Coach’s Award: Calder Wallace

Thank you to the boys for their efforts during the season – I wish them every success for the future and hope that they all continue to play cricket for Banyule Cricket Club next season.

COACH’S REPORT

The 2010/2011 season was a very enjoyable experience for me personally. It was the case of a first year coach and some first time players joining together to form a team. I really enjoyed coaching the boys. Congratulations to the trophy winners for the season.

At the beginning it was a struggle to get consistent numbers every week but by the fifth week we had a full side which was great. We had a few players come up from the Under 11 Kookaburra‟s in Jack Arandt and Spencer Veal; they both showed that they will have what it takes to play at the highest level once they begin to develop their skills.

The boys showed me that each one of them has talent that I will be helpful in later cricketing pursuits. I can‟t decide on one player who improved out of sight because they all made great advancements this season. But I will say who will be a strong leader for many years; and that is Daniel Motalli. He is a great communicator and competitor and involves all the boys.

We ended up playing finals but unfortunately we lost in a nail-biter but each one of the boys tried their hearts out and proved to me how much they have in the tank. Boys like Tom Roberts, Tom Dillon, Michael McKinlay, Colm Cotter and Curtis Butt give a 100% every time they take the field. Their enthusiasm and encouragement is fantastic.

By the end of the season the boys had all tried every position that they had wanted to. At the start of the season we didn‟t have an opening bowling pair but half way through we discovered Shlok Saraf & Jack Parrant as a great combination, they were followed by Jack Rigoni who always bowled well. The same applied to the batting none of the boys wanted to put their hand up to open so in the end I picked them. We had Robbie Moio & Edmund Peng as our openers followed by Daniel Motalli.

In closing, I would like to thank all the boys and their parents without all of you, I wouldn‟t have had such a great summer, getting to know each of the boys and witnessing their improvement. I hope that they will all be back this season because I know I will be.

GO BEARS!!!!!!!!

COACH’S REPORT – BLUE

U\11 Banyule Blue Kookaburras Season Report 2010/2011

Season 2010/2011 was the last in Kookaburras for most of the boys in Banyule Blue this season. All of the boys have come on in leaps and bounds with their cricket over the last few seasons and I am sure they are looking forward to getting into the real stuff next year.

Our bowling this season was again strong with Matthew H, Kye, Jason and Harry all performing well with the big improvers being Thomas H and James. Patrick won the bowling average with his express pace and deadly accuracy.

On the batting front, Patrick, Matthew H, Matthew K and Connor B all had great seasons with some blazing innings while Connor T and Kye formed a formidable combination this season putting together some great partnerships. Connor T won the averages with a phenomenal average of 71, not losing his wicket once.

In the field Banyule Blue did well with all of the boys improving. Matthew K was again solid behind the stumps with Connor B and Harry also performing well with the gloves.

The coach‟s awards went to Connor B for his enthusiasm for all things cricket and to Jason for his application, determination and huge improvement. I would also like to mention Tom B who, playing his first season, showed great courage playing against much older boys. He never took a backward step.

There are a number of people I would like to thank: Laurie Barnes, Damien Braniff, Ross Jeffrey and Steve Tolley for their help at training and on match day; Brad and Lindsay Russell; Geoff Place who is a legend; Dale Mayne and the boys from Banyule Maroon who trained with us all season and of course the Banyule Blue boys. I have had the luck and good fortune over the last three years to watch these boys develop as cricketers and people and I am very proud of all of them.

COACH’S REPORT – MAROON

Season 2010/11 was one of great enjoyment that saw considerable improvement from the Kookaburras Maroon boys. Most of the boys were in their second year of cricket and by the end of the season were playing with a straight bat and were barely bowling no-balls. Not that winning is everything when techniques are changing but the boys were one of the best teams in the competition. Well done to each player.

Congratulations to all our players. Nick Mayne, Lachlan Agnew, Nathan Berry, Rhys Begeman and Aaron Luber all made over 40 runs and hardly went out all season. Matt Jeffrey, Kade Rowe, Jackson Riley, Tom Churchland and Mackenzie Graham played terrific all round cricket and Thomas Leslie and Pat Thomson improved all season. This team also has a few aspiring quicks with Luke Morris taking wickets and others bowling consistently, especially Jake Congdon with his sneaky left arm spinners.

Thanks to all the great supporting parents especially Dave, Heath, Robin and Darren. Special thanks to Chris Rowe for helping with coaching. Thanks to Michael Harte for organising the boys at training. Big thanks to Jed Place for making cricket such a fun and positive experience to our junior players. Well done to Nick (batting average), Luke (bowling average) Mackenzie (all round) and Aaron (improved) for winning awards.

I know there are a lot of basketball players in this team who may not play next year but remember keep practicing your cricket and we will hopefully see you back at Banyule one day. To the boys returning I will catch you in the summer.

49 JUNIORS U11 - KOOKABURRAS - WHITE

COACH’S REPORT – WHITE

Good work and well done to all the parents and boys for a season full of development. To Martin Veal, Brad Bowler and Brian Biggs, thank-you for giving up your time to help with training and match evenings, your help and experience is an asset to the group. The assistant coach Lindsay once again did a magnificent job this season, getting the ground set up, helping the guys get ready to bat, scoring, umpiring, coaching and packing up. I also think the guys appreciate the input of a young man, rather than the old fellows all of the time. Congratulations to the trophy winners Jack Arandt for batting, Rohan Godfrey bowling and the two coach‟s awards going to Lachlan Biggs & Lachlan Imms.

JACKSON BEATON: Jackson did a great job as wicket keeper, improved both in bowling and batting; he just needs encouragement to keep his eye on the ball. LACHLAN IMMS: Lachlan most improved player in batting, bowling and fielding; a great season Lachlan. MEHUL AKHOURI: Mehul displays a good technique when batting and bowls well; his cricket will improve with more experience. CONNOR GODFREY: Conner‟s batting improved throughout the season, so much so, that in the last few games the opposition couldn‟t get him out! His bowling is improving all the time. SEAN MILLIS: Sean is always willing to take advice and this was evident in the improvement throughout the season in his bowling, batting and fielding; a great season Sean. NATHAN AITKIN: A good first season for Nathan, he displayed good skills in batting and bowling. With increased self- confidence Nathan will improve next season. JACKSON BOWLER: Jackson bowled consistently well all season. His batting will improve with practice. He is an enthusiastic team player. SPENCER VEAL: Spencer showed great improvement in bowling this season both in accuracy and pace. His batting is always improving and he is a keen fieldsmen. WILLIAM MC GREGOR: William is keen to do his best at cricket; he trained well and started to show a greater understanding of the game as the season progressed. He displays signs of being a good all-rounder. JAMES AITKIN: James displays natural cricketing skills, he is one of the younger players and with maturity he should enjoy the game of cricket more. Good first season. LACHLAN BIGGS: Lachlan has a correct batting technique, his batting, bowling and fielding abilities are a credit to the practice he does outside of team training; an excellent season, Lachlan. JACK ARANDT: This was Jack‟s third season in Kookaburras and another good one. Jack bats, bowls, wicket keeps and fields and he does them all well! Good luck in future competition, don‟t let bad habits creep into your batting; the bowlers get smarter and quicker as they get older. ROHAN GODFREY: For his first season Rohan displayed that he can bowl quickly he just needs greater accuracy. He batted well during the season and was lightening fast in the field.

A big thank you to my good friend Geoff (JED) Place

MILO CRICKET

Milo Cricket 2010/2011

Well what a year, we started off expecting around 16-20 participants this year due to a large number of the prior year‟s participants graduating to Kookaburra cricket, we ended up having a whopping 38 children sign up for Milo cricket this year (30 on the first day, Wattsy is still recovering). This made us the 2nd largest program in the NE suburbs.

Unfortunately the weather had a huge impact on this year‟s program with many Saturday‟s washed out, however when we did get on the ground the children took to it with gusto, and it was pleasing to see the improvement in all of the children as the year progressed.

I would like to thank my able bodied lieutenants, Adrian Brown, Bill Sier, Darren Wills, Johnno, Incha Carroll, PD and all the other parents who were more than willing to get out on the ground and ensure the children were kept in line and also learnt the cricket basics.

A big thanks to my Wife, yes you Louise, who handled with aplomb the registration, fee collection and most importantly ensured each child received the appropriate Milo kit in the correct size.

Once again our BBQ‟s were a raging success, I did wonder if that was what kept the kids coming back, always seemed more of them when a BBQ was on. To the mums that ensured everyone got a feed; Big Thanks.

With the success of this year‟s program, I expect next year to have even more participants and eagerly await the season to roll on.

Let‟s hope weather permitting we get out there a lot more than last year.

Go Bears
