Match Reports- A Grade The ones were up against Heidelberg West, in the first home game since before Christmas and it started well with us winning the toss and getting off to a great start with the bat. Joffa and Ryno got us past 50 with a great display of quality shots, plus quick singles. After Joffa departed, Ocka joined Ryan and they built the teams highest partnership of the season to date of 84, in which both Ryno and Ocka brought up their 50's. When Ocka was out for 56, Socka came in and destroyed the already deflated Heidelberg West attack. He flayed the ball all over the place and was 39* at the end of our 40 overs. Ryan carried his bat to finish with a fantastic 72*. We started poorly with the ball, allowing them to get to 47 off 7 overs, but came back with some tight bowling from Joffa (1/11) and Ocka (2/21). After the drinks we were well and truly on top, with the D-Lo, Joshy and Gaz keeping the pressure on before Henners cleaned up the tail with a solid 2/1 of 0.5 overs! The boys put in a great effort in the field, getting 2 runouts. Gaz led the way taking 3 catches and J-Lo snared a great diving outfield catch. Graham Bennett Match Reports- B Grade With an away game for the first time in a while, we travelled to West Ivanhoe in what was an opportunity to win our first game against a side that had only won 2 games for the season, along with giving us a chance to perhaps move off the bottom by season’s end, which was certainly the focus of the pre game speech. With the Pidge and Corey Parrant opening the bowling, we were able to get off to a steady start, but we leaked runs mainly when bowling too short. With the first wicket falling at 38, it brought their dangerous striker in who was able to get away a few edges and get the momentum rolling their way, especially once he found the middle of the bat. With short spells the order of the day, both Boris and Cheesy were able to contain the runs and frustrate, which brought about 2 quick wickets before drinks and they went into the break at 3/100. Once back, we started to bowl some good lines, and along with some good field placements were able to gain the upper hand and bowl West Ivanhoe out for a total of 169, which was a great comeback as we were really looking down the barrel of chasing 220 or even 240. Special mentions to Boris for a consistent bowling performance when they were keen to get after him, to Ferret who bowled an exceptional final spell at the end of the innings and to Pidge who did exactly what the skipper asked for and took 3/2 in 3.2 over to clean up the tail. With the momentum in our favour, as a batting group we needed to retain the upper hand by being positive, of which we failed to do so right from the get go. We were both tied down by good bowling and by the consistent loss of wickets, to be 4/54 at the half way mark, and requiring a run a ball for the next 20 over’s. After losing Johnson and Les quickly after drinks, both Boris and Corey knuckled down and put value on their wickets to frustrate West Ivanhoe and hold them in the field for the full allotment………….great display of determination. Outside of these two, the only performance worth mentioning was Spudda who batted really well for his 39. The next two games will be a challenge, in the way that we must win one if not both for our own club and personal pride. GO BEARS!! Match Reports- C Grade The 3rd Grade side that played West Ivanhoe last Saturday was strengthened by the welcome return of Mick Asbury [from 2nd Grade], Shane Blackett [from holidays], Lucas Willoughby [from 2nd Grade] and Steve Pinner [holidays]. After having beaten West Ivanhoe comfortably at their ground on our first outing, we were confident of doing well again. What we encountered however, was a completely different W.I. line-up – new opening bowlers and a stronger batting line-up including A-Grade club champion Delaney. Having lost the toss, Banyule took to the field and started well with a wicket in the second over, courtesy of James Fraser. It didn’t take long to capture our second wicket but from then onwards W.I. started to slowly show some form with the bat. The W.I. C.C. legend Delaney was slow to get going against our opening bowlers, who bowled a superb line and length but he seemed to have a liking for the spinners! Although cricket is a team game it was Delaney who made the difference scoring 97 runs out of his team’s total of 166! It was David Veal who took a magnificent catch on the boundary, from a skied pull shot, that finally dismissed him. Of Banyule’s bowlers, James Fraser was magnificent with 4 wickets ably assisted by Jeremy Jones who, although wicket-less, was unlucky not to have two victims [dropped catches]. Lindsay Russell and David Veal both tried hard taking one wicket apiece. After the team chat before we went into bat, we were confident that we could take care of the W.I. total of 166 runs. However, our actions did not match our intentions and we were quickly in trouble being 4 wickets down for less than 50 runs. It was then Lucas Willoughby who came to the crease! Lucas batted superbly for his 32 runs, with an array straight driving along the ground and lofted shots that had the opposition worried. The game was slowly swinging Banyule’s way until Lucas was run-out in a mix-up when going for a second run. Unfortunately this put a dent in our chances initially until David Veal, James Fraser and Jeremy Jones added some respectability towards the end of the innings - Banyule falling a mere 18 runs short of WI’s total! We hope that with a similar side again next match we’ll give Edinburgh a run for their money at Alfred Crescent! Graeme Renshaw - Captain Match Reports- D Grade Lost the toss again!! Luckily Viewbank put us into bat. Our “Guest Opener” this week was Michael Hargrave who has returned to the Yules after some major knee surgery late last year. Unfortunately Michael fell early to a good ball before he had the chance to flourish. Barnesy made a solid 17 despite copping a nasty blow to the temple from the other opener, who was slippery but erratic to say the least. This paved the way for Plugga to come to the crease and he set about brutalising their change bowlers to all part of Ford Park South. He was ably supported by another youngster Michael Italia who made 10 before being dismissed in a 78 run partnership. We finished with 160 for the loss of 6 wickets. Plugga unbeaten on 71. Viewbank began confidently before our bowlers managed to get the upper hand. Graham Clapton got the break through due to a great Hargy catch in the deep, followed by a low down Barnesy classic catch at 2nd slip. Pat Lunn got a wicket first ball and Barnesy followed up with an LBW. Viewbank were 4 for 72 at the half way mark and we had been 2 for 63 at the same stage. Barnesy got a vital break through straight after break when he bowled Roshan Abedi (one of former juniors) and then Hargy took a classic outfield catch at full stretch off Barnesy . It was the turning point, they were 6 for 83. We faced another recovery by Viewbank took them to 122 only 38 runs behind us, before Michael Italia removed both their Captain and his partner in his last over. Viewbank were now 8 for 123. Billy bowled their number 9 batsman leaving his stumps in total disarray with the score on 138. They could still win with 5 overs left and 20 runs to get. Graham put paid to this by coming around the wicket and clean bowling their 8th batsman who was proving a thorn in our side, with a well-disguised slower ball. It was a tough slog, Viewbank had backed themselves to win all of their last games to make the four. We played well and took some great catches. I think the side that fields the best and takes the most singles when batting usually win the game.
