The committee this year recommended Life Membership be awarded for the first time in many years. The committee’s recommendation for Life Membership this season was former committee member, club captain and champion player, Kevin Brennan. Kevin is certainly a worthy recipient of Life Membership of the Altona Cricket Club. Kevin debuted for Altona in the 1977-78 season and played 246 games. Kevin holds the record for the most catches (381), second most stump- ings (22), is 13th on the all-time games played list and made 2425 runs. He served on the committee for 5 years and was a member of the com- mittee in 1987-88, as was Kevin’s wife, Merryn (who was also a champi- on player at the club), when our 1st and 2nd XI’s both won the VSDCA West Group Premiership. He also captained the club in the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. Remarkable achievements each and every one of them. The committee and members congratulate Kevin on his appointment and look forward to see- ing Kevin, Merryn, and their two daughters, Taylah and Jessica, down at the club in the com- ing seasons. Well done Brennox, this is a great achievement and one you should be proud of. We are proud to have you as a Life Member of our great club.

8 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2012/13

It would be fair to say that 2012/13 season was a tough one on and off the ground however in my opinion one that has set a platform for the future development of ACC!

The season began with the appointment of joint non-playing coaches Mark Mitchell & Michael Davenport (both previously held the role of captain/ coach of the club in their own right). Then shortly after Jim Sheedy and Mick Johnson became involved giving ACC a wealth of knowledge and ex- pertise at training. Counterproductive to this was the club losing fifteen players to either retirement , relocating or to improve their cricket at Premier level. It was a great endorsement of ACC culture that five young President Neil Birthisel lads went to Premier grade cricket. It was also outstanding to see James Muirhead make his first class debut with the Commonwealth Bank Victorian Bushrangers!

While the departure of 15 players placed a burden on our playing stocks it did not dent the new found enthusiasm the new coaches had brought to the club. Preseason was great with more numbers than expected. Although we were very young, to be honest we knew that our younger guy’s would have to step up a level sooner than anticipated therefore, it was acknowledged that our depth needed an in- jection. One thing people cannot say about ACC is that we don’t think outside the square and it was decided to bring two young Englishmen out for the season and set them up in a flat and assist them finding work. We felt it was a calculated risk compared to the cost some players put on their heads domestically, the credentials of the two lads were ok and we approached the season (as with every) with excitement.

Suffice to say not all well laid plans turn to success we had a ‘bumpy’ season to say the least. For the first time in six years our 1st XI missed the finals, with no other senior grade team making them either! Our juniors were a little more successful with four sides making the finals but no one progressing to the grand final. If the Club was to measure everything on premiership wins that would make us very narrow minded. From my point of view there is a big picture that needs to be looked at and here are the positives from the season:

 Numbers at training never dropped off for the entire season  More people were given a go at higher levels, broadening their skill level  Seven new players made the list of people to have played 1stXI cricket for ACC  Number of U15’s played their senior game for the club  The enthusiasm around the club never waned  ACC made a small profit for the year and retained a healthy bank balance  Numbers at Milo cricket increased  Relationships with Football & Hockey clubs could not be stronger  People stayed committed to the ACC  Aaron Maynard played in the Sub District team against the Country XI  Stefan Sadari wining the U17’s for the competition  Max Birthisel for winning the U11’s Batting and Champion player award for the competition

At this point there are a number of people I must acknowledge as without them ACC would not func- tion:-

9 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

Firstly, the Senior and Junior committees all very committed and fun people to be associated with.  All our Junior and Senior coaches for the club  The Mums and Dads who drive their children to the games each week.  Nick Boicos for attracting our new club major sponsor Royalco Resources, Taurus Finan cial Consulting, Spanner Supplies, A1 Cooking; DCIT Group; Carmine Miranda, Total ColourPlus Solu tions and Kookaburra.  Neil Burns for establishing the Purple and Gold Boys and Past Players Coterie Group  Altona Bowling Club for allowing ACC to run Friday night raffle  Ray Patton for his continued and tireless work for Altona Cricket Club managing the Friday Night Raffle  Hobson’s Bay City Council for their continued support and excellence  Executive of Victoria Sub District Association whom oversee the great standard of the ‘Subbies’.  Cricket Australia and without their contributions Sub District would not survive. This cricket season was the first time in 25 years that our ‘living legend’ Gordon MacFarlane did not grace the turf for the club, it is fair to say we did miss his competitive spirit. I would like to believe that Gordy might like to have a hit at some stage in the future.

From a personal perspective it was one of the toughest season’s on and off the ground for me for a number of different reasons and this compromised the way I lead the Club. Early in the New Year it was evident that I did not have the desire to continue to lead the club. I informed the committee of my decision to step down after seven years. It is my view the ACC required a new voice, energy and direc- tion to once again climb the ladder. I was very excited that Neil Burns was willing to accept the Presi- dency role. Neil had been fantastic over the last couple of years; the work he did in establishing the coterie group was extraordinary to give our club an injection of new people. Neil and his committee will have their challenges ahead of them, apart from ensuring a competitive outfit takes the field each week the biggest issue I foresee is guaranteeing the relationship between the Juniors and Seniors is not fragmented in any way. The biggest asset the club has is it juniors by engaging them reaches out to the parents to become involved in so many different facets.

Finally, it would be remiss of me not to thank some special people whom have been with me over the seven years I had as President, their guidance and support made it a special time so to Paul Stewart, Simon Jackson and Glenn Paten I thank you heaps! To Linda, Max and Kate thanks for your love and backing over this time allowing me to attend meetings, training and play when I could have been shar- ing the time with you. It is my intention to continue playing with club so long as I can maintain my form and the coaching staff believe I can add value.

To all members I thank you for the privilege to lead the ‘purple and gold’ for so long, without fear of contradiction ACC is in a better state than when we started this journey.

Yours Sincerely

Neil Birthisel Altona CC President

2012-13 SEASON REVIEW

It was certainly a different start to pre-season training in 2012-13. We were certainly down on num- bers when training commenced. Firstly our coach for the previous 3 seasons, Mark McAllion, was no longer in charge. Mark did an amazing job with the playing group for the 3 years he was in charge. In his first year our 1st XI made finals and our 3rd XI won the Premiership. His 2nd season, our 1st XI again made finals and our 2nd XI won the Premiership. We were all hoping it was going to be the 1st XI’s turn in his last season but unfortunately we had to settle for our 1st XI finishing third. From all at the club Mark, we thank you and wish you all the best following the sporting endeavours of your two sons, Liam and Cody.

Other departures from our 2011-12 list included the retirements of Gordon Macfarlane and Tim Col- lins. Firstly of Gordon. He is the club’s record games holder with 331 games (mainly 1st XI games), the club’s record taker with 637 and remarkably the club’s leading run scorer with 6250 runs. He has won the R.M. Hatch Medal (VSDCA 1st XI Best & Fairest Award) the Kirk Medal 9 times, the club bowling average 12 times (now named in Gordon’s honour) and the Mick Jenkins Memorial Shield for the 1st XI Batting Average 3 times. All the best in retirement Gordon, you will be sorely missed on the ground. We hope dual Kirk Medal winner, Tim Collins, only spends the one season in retirement following the birth of his second son, Harry.

The following boys who were off to try their skills at Premier Cricket Level. The club congratulates these boys on their time at Altona and wish them luck at their new respective clubs:- Ben Davies and Brett Muirhead - St.Kilda Cricket Club Humza Ali, Ben Deller and Nick Donazzon - Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club They join the following players from Altona who are already at Premier Clubs:- James Muirhead (St.Kilda), Jake Hancock (Carlton), Matthew Wilson (Carlton), Stuart Wilson (Carlton) and Christopher Sheedy (Richmond). Good luck boys, we will continue to follow your progress.

Our new coaching panel consisted of former captain/coach’s and past champion players, Mark Mitch- ell and Michael Davenport and also welcomed back Jim Sheedy in the important role of Practice Cap- tain. It was certainly a tough initiation for the three coach’s with a total of 15 players departing. The decision was made early on to:-  Not to enter a 5th’s side this year due to the reduction in numbers  Look offshore to bolster our playing stocks Whilst we didn’t have any teams make finals, the coach’s felt that a lot of the boys gained a great amount of experience from the season which will only bolster their confidence moving into the 2013- 14 season. The enthusiasm amongst the group remained high throughout with our numbers at train- ing always in the high 30’s and some nights exceeding 40.

Our R.M. Hatch Shield Team was professionally managed by Craig Duff and Craig Swan. We had our best finish for a number of years with our boys finishing 3rd in our group. With 4 wins and 2 losses our boys only missed top spot on percentage. We defeated eventual group winner, Broadmeadows/ Roxburgh Park in the final game. A very big THANK YOU must go to both Craig Duff and Craig Swan for a solid 5 months of excellent coaching of each and every one of the boys in our squad.

Our President of 7 years, Neil Birthisel, has decided to end his reign and stepped down as President at the end of the season. The club thanks Neil for his tireless efforts in assisting to strengthen the brand of our great club to one that is really respected within the VSDCA circle. Neil will continue as a club delegate to the VSDCA and will also continue on as a player. Thank you again Neil for your excellent contribution as President which commenced in the 2006/07 season.

11 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

2012-13 SEASON REVIEW Unfortunately we have lost the services of club stalwart John Varchione after it was decided the club would look elsewhere for a 1st XI captain. We thank John for his loyal services over his 222 games and are very sorry to see him depart the A’s. A very popular member around the club, John will be sorely missed both on and off the ground. We all wish John and Lauren the very best with the upcoming birth of their first child and hope to see the three of them back at Altona.

Replacing Neil Birthisel as President is former player, Neil Burns. Neil has really hit the ground running and has been very active in recruiting some quality players to the A’s. Former Footscray Edgewater fast bowler, Andrew McCammond, will lead our bowling attack. Also from Footscray-Edgewater, open- ing batsman, Peter Herrick, will be a welcome addition. Former Prahran and Footscray-Edgewater off spin bowler, Shane Jones, has committed to joining the A’s in 2013-14 and will lead the club on the field. Tim Collins has also committed to complete the pre-season and depending on fitness will also be a welcome addition. Adding these players to our already solid core group of players will give the A’s every chance of returning to play finals in 2013-14.

Congratulations to our curator, Pat Dalli, on winning the 2012-13 Cricket Victoria Turf Pitch Award for the VSDCA West Group. The Hobson’s Bay City Council is obviously a major partner to the Altona Crick- et Club and having quality facilities and people like Pat ensure we all enjoy our cricket on quality con- sistent pitches week in week out. Darren McConville and Ian Mackenzie again did an excellent job leading our junior committee. Our junior program has certainly taken on a refreshed level of professionalism since your involvement. To all the members of the junior committee, all junior coach’s, team managers and scorers, a big thank you for your efforts throughout the season in teaching and developing our junior players. We need each and everyone of you for this club to prosper. Our First XI was once again excellently served by scorer and Life Member, Christine Howard. There are very few, if any, who place the same level of pride in their scorebook (or ipad these days). Also spoiling the First XI was Team Manager, Practice Captain and Best Clubman, Jim Sheedy.

Club’s like ours cannot survive without the volunteers who offer their time to assist with the im- provement of our club. To all of our volunteers we solute you.

12 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

2012-13 SEASON REVIEW A special thank you to club legend, Ray ‘Fish’ Patton. Fish continues his great work for the club by man- aging the Friday Night raffle at the Altona Bowling Club. Is it any wonder the Best Club Person Award is named in Fish’s honour. We need to get as many members along to the Altona Bowling Club from 6pm on a Friday Night to support the Raffle. Become a Bowling Club Social Member ($20 per year) and you could be the winner of the ‘lucky members draw’ and take home between $200 and $1,000. Drawn every Friday Night at 7pm.

To our major partners, Peter Topham and Nick Boicos from Royalco Resources Ltd. A big thank you for jumping on board again with the club. Your contribution is invaluable to the on going success of our club both on and off the field.

Neil Burns kicked off our Coterie Group, ‘The Purple and Gold Boys’ and ‘The Past Players’ in season 2012-13. This has proven very successful in not only a financial sense but also giving a lot of our past champions, players and officials, another reason to re-associate themselves with the club. The feed- back from the Coterie members has been overwhelmingly positive and was capped off by an outstand- ing Presidents/Coterie Group luncheon. . Great job Ecka.

ALTONA CRICKET CLUB’s FIRST SENIOR BUSHRANGER JAMES MUIRHEAD Altona Cricket Club now has it’s very own Bushranger. Promising leg-spinner James Muirhead made his senior debut for the Commonwealth Bank Victorian Bushrangers during the 2012-13 season. One of the brightest spinning prospects in the country, the 19 year old made his first class debut for the Bushrangers in the Sheffield Shield game played against the South Australian Redback’s at the Ade- laide Oval in February. Jimmy impressed with his flight and turn on the flat Adelaide Oval wicket, and was rewarded with two wickets. Muirhead enjoyed his best season at Premier level with St Kilda, collecting 43 wickets at an average of 19.67, including a mesmerising spell of 7-26 against Frankston Peninsula - the best figures taken in the 2012-13 1st XI competition. Jimmy will look to establish himself in the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers line-up this season. Victo- ria will boast the best spin trio of any state with Muirhead lining up alongside Jon Holland and Fawad Ahmed, the experience of the latter sure to help the development of the St Kilda and former Altona leggie. INAUGRAL PRESIDENTS LUNCHEON

The clubrooms were a buzz in anticipation of the club’s inaugural President luncheon held at the clubrooms Saturday, 2nd February. Coterie organiser and Vice President, Neil ‘Ecka’ Burns, worked tirelessly in the preceding weeks to ensure all ran smoothly.

Prior to the luncheon commencing, former Captain Coach David ‘Darcy’ Duggan, tossed the coin prior to the Altona v’s Melton 1st X1 game. Unfortunately the toss was won by Mick Allen of Melton with Melton electing to bat.

The luncheon opened up with Glenn Paten welcoming all our sponsors. -Peter Topham and Bruce Pertzel - Royalco Resources -David Appleby - D.C.I.T. -Brendan Post - Spanner Supplies -Brad Scholes – Total Colourplus From left to right: Umpire, Joe Blow, President Neil Birthisel, -Steve Molnar – A1 Kitchen Supplies Captain John Varchione, former Captain/Coach David ‘Darcy’ -Samantha Mitchell – Altona Bowling Club Duggan, Melton Captain, Mick Allen and Umpire, Wheelahan. -Taurus Financial Consulting -Carmine Miranda Financial Planning -City of Hobsons Bay Also welcomed were: Former Australian Test Cricketer and Current Cricket Victoria CEO – Tony Dodemaide John Craig and Geoff Hart – VSDCA Executive

Neil Burns, stepping in for President, Neil Birthisel, roused the audience as he spoke about several top- ics including:-  The history of the club – having reached the 1st XI finals 22 out of 51 years and 15 out of 21 years in the VSDCA  We have 10 players at Premier Cricket Clubs at present  James Muirhead making his debut for the Victorian Bushrangers  How important our sponsors are to the club  He thanked the hard work of the current committee  Also thanking the Altona Football and Hockey Clubs and the Williamstown CY’s Cricket Club for their great numbers at the luncheon

Following our lunch, our guest speaker, Tony Do- demaide, spoke about cricket in Victoria. Neil Burns then joined Tony Dodemaide on stage asking him some questions about his playing career. The Imran Khan story delighted the audience.

The luncheon concluded with many a story being told about the ‘old days’. It was great to see past adminis- trators present in Bill Groome, Ken Stephenson, Denis O’Dowd, Nick Boicos.

Whilst lunch proceeded into drinks the game contin- ued on the ground. It was a mighty day for the A’s both on and off the field. Altona bowled Melton out for 223 and had 30 minutes to bat with a fired up Shane Harwood to contend with. John Varchione and Adam Brown did a great job to end the afternoon on 0 for 30.

It may have been the inaugural President’s lunch but after the success of the day, it appears the Altona Cricket Club Presidents luncheon is here to stay.

During the off season a giant Shade Sail was erected between the club’s Social Rooms and Change Rooms. The new Sail provided much needed shade from the suns rays as well as providing shelter dur- ing times of light rain and drizzle.

The Shade Sail was the idea of the junior football club’s, Paul Robinson. At a total cost of $17,600, it was always going to be difficult for all occupants of the F.J. Kirk Oval to fund the erection of the sail without the assistance of City of Hobson’s Bay. Paul arranged all the plans, obtained quotes and ap- proached City of Hobson’s Bay on behalf of Altona Cricket Club (seniors and juniors), Altona Football Club and Altona Junior Football Club.

Thankfully, City of Hobsons Bay came to the party and agreed to fund 50% of the total cost to erect the sail. Altona Cricket Club’s contribution toward the shade sail was $4,400. Whilst this amount is significant for any sporting club, the committee unanimously voted in favour of contributing to the structure as it was felt players and supporters would all benefit greatly.

The Shade Sail was erected during the football season and was ready to go for the 2012-13 Cricket Season. The sail proved to be very popular throughout the season with numbers congregating under the sail swelling as the season progressed.

Relations between the football club and cricket club have never been better. Over the last couple of season we have seen joint purchases of a number items to improve the comfort of players, members and spectators.

Well done Paul and thank you from all at Altona Cricket Club.

ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL COACH’S REPORT 2012/13

Jim Sheedy, Mike Davenport and Mark Mitchell The Altona Cricket Club in many ways this year was successful, although history will not represent this on our honour boards.

From a coaching perspective we couldn't have asked for any more from the current group of players who went into battle each weekend to represent the club.

Out of the 46 players who would take the field each week, 38 of those were either under 20 or over 40. Many of these players were given great opportunities to play either in higher elevens or be given greater opportunities in the teams they were selected in. In all cases the players adapted to the best of their ability and gave it everything they had.

The experience these young players will have gotten this year will put them in a great position for next year and indeed the coming years.

Training continued to be strong averaging 40 each night after Christmas with a peak of 55 oneTuesday night. Remarkable numbers for a club who finished out of the four in all elevens.

Our junior club contributed very well to the senior teams this year with 10 of our under 17's playing senior cricket and 7 of our under 15's joining the ranks as well. These young guys really are the future of this club.

No club in the competition is in better condition than we are when it comes to the standard of our jun- iors coming up through the ranks.

A special thanks to Jaimi Paten. Jaimi continued to help out with our fitness program this year and is a well respected member of our coaching group.

To all of our captains - well done. A tough year given our demographics but a year that will be instru- mental in our future.

Thank you to all of our supporters who continued to turn up each week and support our players on the field. It's always great to see you

Thanks also to our committee for the great support they have provided us over the year.

In closing, as a player in our club we would have to say that there is no greater time than the present to stand up and be the next champion player. The doors are open, opportunities are there to be had. Now is the time to write your own history in this great club. Mark Mitchell Mike Davenport Jim Sheedy

ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL 1ST XI REPORT 2012/13

It was clear in the off season Altona Cricket Club would find it very difficult to match it with the top teams in our group, which were expected to be Melton and Caulfield, with the group of players who turned out for the first night of pre-season training. We underestimated the effect the retirement of Gordon Macfarlane in the off season would have on this team. Gordy had been an inspiration to the playing group for what seemed like two generations. The loss of his competitiveness and skill could not be easily replaced. At 48 he had put everything he had on the line for Altona Cricket Club and the en- tire playing group wish him well in retirement.

Add to this the change of coach with Mark McAllion stepping aside after three very productive years, the surprise retirement of Tim Collins, Ben Davies and Brett Muirhead making the move to St.Kilda at Premier level and the club electing not to have Sri Lankan swing bowler, Gayan Fernando return, we were already 5 players down on last seasons Preliminary Final side. Our depth was further tested with 3 youngsters from the two’s deciding they would try their luck at Footscray and others who had either moved away or decided to try their luck at other clubs. In all we lost 12 players who had consistently played 1’s or 2’s the previous year. Added to this we had Josh Young and Craig Bancroft overseas for the first week or two of the season. The club decided to bring in two English imports in Owen Alsop and Josh Wells. Both boys were rea- sonable players at Subbies level but were young and inexperienced. It was easy to see the clubs depth was going to be tested but would hopefully show some of the boys how hard they had to work to make it at the highest level.

Our season started really well with victory’s over Williamstown and Yarraville in the first two games. However we stumbled badly after that and lost the next 5 games before Christmas. After Christmas we still had to face Caulfield and Melton. First up after Christmas we faced Caulfield in a one dayer at home. For the first time since round two our top order clicked and we won a high scoring game. We followed up with a win against Sunshine, then a loss to Melton, a win against Ormond and finally a disappointing loss to Elsternwick. Chasing 167 we were all out for 150 with Aaron Maynard making 93.

In summary I would like to thank my loyal lieutenants, Aaron Maynard and Lee Elmore. Aaron had an- other great year with the bat making 500 runs at 50 and chimed in with 14 wickets at 29. Aaron is a quality player, one Altona cannot afford to lose. Lee is a soldier who just continues to work hard. As an all-rounder he had another fine year making 230 runs at 21 and taking 21 wickets at 21. Lee certainly needs help with the ball so I hope the club looks to recruit a fast bowler for next season. Congratulations to Josh Wells, Owen Alsop, Stefan Sidari, Luke Wilson, Jake Duff, Chris Peters, Rhys Ellis and Jake Roberts for playing their first, 1st XI game for Altona during the season. I would like to thank Christine Howard for doing a wonderful job again as the 1st XI scorer. We would be absolutely lost without the tremendous efforts of Christine. To our Team Manager, Jim Sheedy, thank you for your fantastic work as Team Manager throughout the season.

ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL 2ND XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2012/13

The 2012/13 season was always going to be a challenge, firstly having lost a large number of players through retirement or natural attrition and secondly through player progression to Premier Clubs. My expectations changed based on the final list placed in front of me at the first selection and at this point I realised it wasn't about a Seconds Finals assault, rather to provide as much support to the Firsts as possible whilst rebuilding the club from the bottom up. Unfortunately our old blokes are 40+ and the young blokes are -20, leaving a huge gap of experienced to non-experienced players at an all time high.

This opened doors for the younger section of the club to get an opportunity to play 2nd XI Captain Craig Duff a level above where most would have expected at the start of the season. All in all the season had its ups and downs with a few wins, a few losses and a few thrown away, but knowing that we had a very youthful inexperienced side I believe that we gained more than we lost. A number of young blokes got to taste and hopefully understand what will be required if they wish to play at this level (and above) consistently. Our main highlight in the batting department was the emergence of Luke Wilson who knocked up a 96 & a 60, just needs more consistency and less ways to get out!! Magic was consistent as usual knocking up a couple of hundred with Chris Peters and Matt Davis the next best. But the next best need to be scoring 200+ runs a year to consider themselves 2nd eleven players. Honestly, we need to spend more time at the wicket and learn to build an innings, too many players want fast results and the proof is on the table that it doesn't work. In the bowling department we struggled for wickets but bowled well!! Our number of runs against was the second lowest in the competition. I wish that good fielding was the cause of this but there were plenty of dropped catches, misfields and fence hugging. Jesse Worthing took the opportunity of play- ing seconds with both hands and took 14 (18) wickets to win the bowling average, just needs to train hard and land it more often. Sean McCartney proved that hard work and consistent bowling can get results finishing with 13 and Jake Duff finished with 10 (12) at a pretty reasonable average. Chippa overall finished with 6 wickets in the two’s but 17 in the three’s & 2 in the fourth’s which made for a fair year with a total of 25 wickets overall. Once again the need to improve in maintaining pressure on the batsmen at all times and bowling in partnerships is something we learned on many occasions, we just now need to make it a rule and not an afterthought. Overall it was a promising year with more positives than negatives. For us as to take the next step as a group we need to stop talking about it and start doing it. The Stats don't tell us everything but they do paint a picture. It's time to stop making excuses as to why we can't train, or telling people why we should be playing Seconds ahead of someone else. Work hard at training, put some scores on the board, start taking wickets and enjoy playing cricket with your mates, because you put all of that together and we will win more games. Go A’s Craig Duff 2nd XI Captain

ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL 3RD XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2012/13

The Altona 3rd X1 for 2012/13 was more of a year of development. The 3rd’s finished in 11th place, with 3 wins, 2 draws and 8 losses.

The side for the season was represented by 23 players of which: 3rd XI Captain John Donazzon 8 players were over 40 years of age. 6 players also played U17A’s 4 players also played U15A’s 5 players over 18 but under 25 years of age.

Most games consisted of a team that either contained a majority of much older or much younger play- ers, not often a balanced blend of both. Almost half of the positions held in this season’s sides were held by U15 & U17 players, reflecting its inexperience. This will however be indicative for a very posi- tive future for the club.

I had the pleasure and honour of taking over the captaincy midway through the season, it was a bitter- sweet moment, with the elected captain Colin Scott unfortunately succumbing to injury, and being forced to resign his post.

The season:

Round 1 v Williamstown: Altona played a very strong opposition side in Williamstown, eventual season runners up, in a one day game. Williamstown made 6/277 in 45 overs, we could only manage 9/152. John Varchione Jnr. was the sole performer with the bat, scoring 39. Adam Lewis also performed well with 3/24.

Round 2 v Yarraville: Another one day game saw a convincing win for Altona – 7/172 with Yarraville 7/166. Fahad Ali made a quickfire 46, which saw him promoted to the 2’s next round.

Round 3 v Ivanhoe: Our third one day game in a row… We bowled Ivanhoe out for 174, thanks to Josh Young taking 4/33. The runs were made in less than 40 overs with Gus McIntyre making a brilliant 81 & Matt Davis 54 N.O. Their partnership of 136 got us over the line.

Round 4 v Coburg: I thought this round was almost the turning point for the season. We ventured out to Coburg to be the only side to incur a washout for the round. Coburg finished 2nd last on the ladder and could have given our youngsters some confidence.

Round 5 v Kew: This round saw our only T20 game this season. Kew made 8/146 in 20 overs and we could only manage 6/114 against the eventual premiers of the 3rd division.

Round 6 v Roxburgh Park/Broadmeadows: This is the game we had a real chance of achieving an out- right, bowling R.P.B out for 80. Great spell from Adam Lewis taking 4/21 and even more surprising bowling from Gus McIntyre with 3/3 . We made a quick 6/141 and put R.P.B back in. Looked like we had a good chance with them reeling at 9/53, but we could not get the final wicket. Time and the weather got the better of us, and they ended up on 9/91. Great bowling in the second innings from Anthony Rafferty with 7/33.

Round 7 v Werribee: Also had a chance to win this game, but the second week was again washed out. Having them at 9/166 ,(again not being able to get that last wicket), with the final 2 Werribee batsmen putting on a good partnership to be all out for 215. Anthony Rafferty again starring with the ball taking 6/31.

25 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

Round 8 v Brunswick: My first game as Captain, and with only 10 minutes to go before the game, we had only 2 players at the ground…Thought this maybe the first boycotted game, due to the selection of Captain!! Unfortunately, this was a result of the ground location, (remote), and the junior games ending late. It was another one day game against a very strong Brunswick side, that had us at 9/150 after 45. Matt Davis made a great 60 and the last wicket partnership between U15 Dylan Appleby and U17 Jordan Roache aided our credibility, by adding to our score. Brunswick eventually made the runs with 10 overs to spare. Anthony Rafferty 2/15 and Mitchell Cullen 2/16 were the pick of the bowlers.

Round 9 v Preston: Our fifth one day game saw a strong Preston, (who ended up 4th on the ladder), make 7/223 off 45, and in reply, we could only manage 152.

Round 10 v Sunshine: This game was one that Altona should have been able to pencil in as a win. However, batting first, Sunshine made 275 on a small ground. Ben Murfett’s 4/67 and Neil Birthesel’s 3/36 were the bowling highlights. Returning the following week, we could only manage 209 from 60 overs, a disappointing loss.

Round 11 v Melton: After losing the toss, and batting first, we made a very competitive 9/241 from our 80 overs, usually a defendable score on our ground. However Melton came out the following week and made the runs with an over or so to spare. Benn Murfett 3/64, young Jordan Hegarty 2/30 and old Neil Birthesel 2/28 were the pick of the bowlers of the game.

Round 12 v Plenty Valley: After we had our passports stamped at the border, and we eventually ar- rived at Plenty Valley, we made a credible 127 on a terrible wicket. We thought we had a chance for the following week, but with rain during the week, the wicket held up a little better. Plenty Valley were eventually bowled out for 181. Ben Murfett was the pick of the bowlers with 3/26.

Round 13 v Balwyn: In our last round, a one day game again, Balwyn won the toss, and elected to bat, making 173 in 45 overs. Young Jake King was the best bowling of the bowlers with figures for the game taking 2/13. Altona came in to bat, and at 1/97, looked to be in a good position, thanks to Ben Murfett on 65. However, we were eventually bowled out for 159.

Season summary:

Thank you for all of the support from the club and coaches .As you can see from the above, we had a great chance to win against Coburg, R.P.B., Werribee, Sunshine, Melton, Plenty Valley and Balwyn, meaning we had the opportunity for 7 more wins than we ended up with.

An improvement from all of the younger guys will see some great success at Altona. To the younger players that played juniors at Altona, and then alongside the oldies in the 3rd’s, Mitchell Cullen, John Varchione Jnr., Jesse Worthing, Jordan Roache, Jordan Hegarty, Fahad Ali, Mitchell Grubb, Jake King, Connor Scott, and Dylan Appleby, and to the young guys not playing juniors, Matt Davis, Gus McIn- tyre, Ben Murfett and Shannon Clarke: put your minds into it and apply yourselves…you will get where you want to go. To Adam Lewis, good luck in your retirement, and to the rest of you older blokes, keep helping an en- couraging!!

ALTONA C.C. 50th ANNUAL 4TH XI CAPTAINS REPORT 2012/13

Thank you first of all goes to the coaches and committee for giving me the opportunity to captain the side. I en- joyed the year although it was a really tough one with only 2 wins. This year was always going to be tough with the players we had available and the age of the players we had but, it was great to see the improvement of those players over the year and that is what this level is all about, the development of young players for the fu- ture of our club. I believe we have a great group of kids coming through which I hope stay at our club until the time they are ready to move into Premier Cricket which as a club is what we want to see. I want to give special thanks to Vince Cutajar and Andrew Peters who did a great job when I was absent in giving the kids a go and de- veloping their game. I hope I can continue next year in developing the kids and making Altona Cricket Club the strongest club in the West. Best Regards Darren Worthing

30 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

Frank Kirk (1st XI Best & Fairest Award) Frank Kirk was instrumental in the formation of the Altona Cricket Club. Frank was involved with Alto- na Mercantile Mutual Cricket Club in the late 50’s and early 60’s and sought to recruit Ray Duckett to the club. Ray was a champion player at Newport ANA and had just moved into Altona. Together they pushed for Altona Mercantile and Altona ANA to join forces and become the Altona Cricket Club. Whilst Altona ANA initially rejected the merger offer the Altona Cricket Club was formed in the 1962 season. Altona ANA folded shortly after and its players then moved across to Altona Cricket Club. Ini- tially playing in the WAFDCA then the VJCAA and thanks to the tireless work of Frank Kirk now the VSDCA. Frank is the longest serving President in the club’s history. Frank was recognised for his hard work by not only having the ground named in his honour but also the first XI Best & Fairest Award. This award, voted by the umpires at the end of each game is awarded to the best player in the first XI for the season.

Joe Grasby (2nd XI Best & Fairest Award)

Joe Grasby by all accounts was an excellent clubman. Captain of various elevens but mainly the 2nds, the 2nd XI best player medal was named after him in tribute for his many years of service to the club. Joe played 140 games for Altona in a career which started in 1974/75. This award is also voted on by the umpires at the end of each game.

Ray Patton (Best Club Person Award)

One just needs to look at the club honour boards to realize why the best club person award has been named in Ray’s honour. A life member, Ray was a part of the cricket club committee for almost 30 years, serving as the club, secretary, president and treasurer for an amount of time that has and most likely will never be matched. Ray also played for the club playing 153 games scoring 1232 runs as a wicket keeper taking 93 catches and 8 stumpings. Ray continues his involve- ment in the club by being a driving force behind the club’s major fundraiser, the Friday night raffle at the bowling club.

Wayne "Lumpy" Patton (Club Champion Player Award)

The club champion trophy was renamed in honour of Wayne Patton after he passed away in the late 1980’s. An all-round Altona person Wayne served on the committee for many years and was a first XI wicket keeper. Wayne played 132 games in a career that began in 1974/75. He was tough competitor with a very strong charac- ter. I remember Lumpy as our Team Manager in our premiership year of 1987/88 along with his assistant Stewy who had snapped his leg in the previous football season. Lumpy had the lower part of one of his legs amputated and we had both Lumpy and Stewy on the sidelines on crutches and together they formed our 12th man.

31 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

Mick Jenkins (1st XI Batting Award)

The first XI batting average award is named after a long standing supporter of the club. Mick Jenkins served on the club committee and happily invested time into the younger players. Mick enjoyed watching his son Paul play at the club and was always willing to help out the club whenever help was needed. Paul went on to become a champion player winning the Hatch Medal 1st XI Best & Fairest in the Sub District Competition, he Captained Coached the club, was awarded Life Membership and was also a recipient of his fathers award 4 times.

Gordon MacFarlane (1st XI Bowling Award)

The 1st XI bowling average was named after club legend Gordon MacFarlane who had been the win- ner of the bowling average a record 9 times. Gordon is the current club games, wickets and runs rec- ord holder and is the only player in Altona Cricket Club history to take 600 wickets. He is also the only player to have 6000 runs for the club. Gordon has won the prestigious Kirk Medal 8 times, is the win- ner of the Hatch Medal which is the1st XI Best & Fairest in the Sub District Competition, is a 1st XI Premiership Player and is also a Life Member of the club.

Monica Clarke (2nd XI Batting Award)

The Monica Clarke memorial shield is named after our first female life member and 2nd XI scorer for many years. Monica was a tireless worker who loved scoring for the seconds while watching “her boys”. Monica was the scorer for the 1st XI for many years and became the scorer for the seconds when the then first XI captain forgot to pick her up one week.

Alec Merrill (Most Promising Junior Award) The Alec Merrill award is named after former senior & junior coach Alec Merrill. Alec was the senior coach and U/16 coach in 1972/73 Season when the 1st XI, 2nd XI and U/16’s all won premierships in the then VJCA Competition. He was appointed senior coach for a 2nd time in 1987/88 season and again the 1st & 2nd XI’s won premierships this time in the Sub District Competition. He was very influential in fos- tering young talent at the club, hence this award was created in his honour and is presented every year to a top age U/17 player. The award is $300 worth of coaching.

Annual Report—Junior Section 2012-13 Altona Cricket Club Junior Section Presidents Report: Welcome to all; I want to start by acknowledging the fantastic efforts of my fellow committee mem- bers that contributed to another successful season for the ACC junior section. I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of all the non-committee members who have contributed to our success throughout the season, all our coaches who freely give up their time and do a fabulous job in coaching our children, and all the parents who help out with our committee initiatives and the running of our teams on game day.

The annual junior report highlights a club strong in numbers, with 3 out of 8 sides making the semi- finals, a host of junior players that made representative teams and Max Birthisel winning the WRJCA U11A batting and champion player awards along with Stefan Sidari winning the WRJCA U17 ½A bowl- ing award. It also speaks of a Hatch program that contained 6 Altona players that had their best result in years. I would like to thank Craig Duff for his Hatch efforts and his junior development work throughout the season.

Things I believe we do very well; is that we are extremely well run with administration and in a finan- cial sense and I would like to extend my thanks to both Ian and Erica for their hard work. I would also like to thank the senior committee and coaching staff for continuing to put junior development at the forefront of their considerations. Thanks to Colin Scott for his dedication to the junior committee.

I also believe we have started to get some traction with our Trivia night and believe it can be our big- gest fund raising event and it allows both the senior and junior parts of our club to develop a closer relationship. Administrative Report: We still need better succession planning and could always use more committee members. In closing I look forward to another successful year with the Altona Cricket Club. Administrative Report: The Altona Junior Cricket Club is affiliated with the Western Region Junior Cricket Association (WRJCA) and fielded the following sides in the 2012-13 season: U11 Cubs (not for points competition) U11A U13B Gold U13B Purple U13A U15A U15B U17 ½A Total number of registered players affiliated with the WRJCA for season 2012-13 was: 86 It was encouraging to see a number of ‘graduates’ from our Milo In2Cricket program from season 2011-12 register as U11 players.

37 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

RM Hatch Shield Coach – Craig Duff, Assistant Coach—Craig Swan Finished 3rdon ladder Altona fielded a side in the RM Hatch Shield with a total of 6 Altona players selected. A number of in- door and outdoor selection trials were held with the squad named in November. The WRJCA in conjunction with Cricket Victoria initiated guidelines that divided all WRJCA clubs into geographic boundaries of 6 Hatch regions. The intent of the guideline is that Altona is provided contact details from ‘feeder’ clubs. Other clubs can be approached and players from non-feeder clubs can still approach Altona directly, however it is encouraged that the feeder clubs provide players for selection trials at their nominated sub-district club. Altona has the following ‘feeder clubs’ Altona North, Altona Roosters, Laverton, Point Cook and Sea- brook. The WRJCA will provide contact details of all available top age U15 players in their respective region for the purpose of trialling for Hatch selection. Hatch clubs are not restricted to the ‘feeder’ clubs, however contact details will not be provided by WRJCA. This seasons R.M. Hatch Shield Team was made up of a mixture of players from Altona, Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Seabrook, Roosters, Keilor & Aberfeldie. There were 3 that carried on the tradition of the father son combo, another whose uncle played & finally the brother of a previous player. I had the pleasure of playing with all 5 of these guys, 4 of them many years ago in Hatch (of which 3 went on to play District Cricket at 1st Eleven level) and the other in the Seniors just recently, which shows where you can progress from playing in this competition. This year's Champion Player AND winner of the Batting average was Jake Hobbs who had a great tour- nament with the bat compiling 169 runs @ 33.8, taking 8 catches and 3 stumpings. He was also a great on field leader and would be a great asset to our club if he ever moves close enough to get to training. Dasith Jayatilake and Aiden Elkington backed up Jake with 159 & 123 respectively. Jake & Dasith also made the highest opening partnership for the entire Hatch competition with a 105 run stand. Our bowling average went to the youngest player in the team Zane Donazzon who had a fantastic tournament taking 9 wickets at an unbelievable average of 4.78 which was the best for the West Group. If this young bloke matures even more with another year of Hatch still available we could see some records tumble. Zane was ably assisted from Mitchell Cullen who also took 9 wickets at 9 and Brett Smith took 6 at 9.17. Another notable fact was that we also gave away the least amount of runs in the competition. As a group it was a great tournament and a pleasure for all who attended the games, as they showed us how a group of young individuals were able to come together as a team to produce one of our best finishes in years. Every player contributed in some way and they worked hard as a team to fight out to the end. I would like to thank all of the parents who helped out but I'd especially like to thank Craig Swan for giving up his time to help out as assistant coach. Without a child playing and not being from the club truly shows what this man is about. Thanks for everything you did for the kids and our club. In finishing I would like to wish all the boys the best of luck in their future endeavours and hope they all achieve what they have set out to do. Regards,

Craig Duff

The sessions were well attended with 21 registered participants ranging from 4 years old through to 10 years old. A presentation was held with all participants receiving a medallion and certificate. This continues to be the main pathway into the U11 Cubs or U11A teams and continued support in this program is important for the future of the club.

Financial Report Refer separate report at Attachment 1. The committee has managed to keep the fees at a similar level over the past 5 years whilst supple- menting income from fundraising events throughout the season. A simplistic breakdown of our fees is presented below:

39 ALTONA CRICKET CLUB - 50th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON - 2012/13

Major Fundraising events

The major fundraising events undertaken in season 2012-13 were: Trivia night McGrath Foundation - Pink stumps day The trivia night was well supported by local businesses with the donation of prizes and vouchers.

McGrath Foundation - Pink stumps day

At the request of Tommi Wesley (U13As), we hosted Pink Stumps events for the McGrath foundation on Saturday 23 February and Sunday 24 February. The pink stumps were used by our U11A and U13A teams as well as for the U15s Twenty20 match against the U16 footy club. All money raised went directly to the McGrath foundation. A total of $711.00 was raised

Major Projects/events

New/expansion to training net facilities Additional training net facilities have been jointly identified as an important requirement for the fu- ture of both the senior and junior sections of the club. From preliminary discussions with the council, the majority of the funding for any new facilities would have to come from the state or federal gov- ernment as well as the cricket club, as the local councils budget is spread thin across a large number of sporting facilities in the Hobson’s Bay area. The majority of the local council funding is currently allocated towards maintenance of existing facilities and justifying new or additional nets at Altona will be challenging. The junior section will continue to host fundraising events and apply for any appropriate grants.

Visit from a Bushranger

We were very pleased to have St Kilda premier cricket players Ben Davies and James Muir- head, both former Altona CC junior cricketers attend our U15 training. They ran some training drills, held 1-1 sessions in the nets and chatted with the boys. They were the first to arrive and the last to leave. James has played with Australia Under-19s, Adelaide Strikers, and just made his 1st class debut for Victoria against SA in the Sheffield Shield match 24-27 January 2012. Ben was just fresh from scoring 124 in the 3rd XI for St Kilda.

Twenty20 Sunday Bash

Our U17s played in the inaugural Sunday Bash Twenty20 competition held by Gellibrand CC. The boys won all their 3 games convincingly and went on to win the grand final even more convincingly beating Sunshine within an hour! Congratulations on winning another piece of silverware and $400 for the club (prize donated by Ascot Vale Sports and Trophies). Our U15 team also competed and narrowly missed out on making the grand final.

Altona CC v Altona Footy Club Twenty20

Our U15 team took on the footy club U16 team in a fun Twenty20 match as a curtain raiser for the senior XI taking on the senior footy club in a Twenty20 match.

Award winners season 2012-13

All registered players apart from the U17 ½ A team, received a ‘General Participant’ trophy. The U17 ½ A team held their presentation combined with the senior club. This is consistent with previous years and a logical approach considering their age and the majority of the play- ers are also playing in the senior teams.
