PRESIDENT’S REPORT

12 months ago I sat down to write my report in the midst of a State wide lockdown due to increased numbers of the Corona virus working their way through the Community. Tonight as I tap away on the keyboard we are mid-way through Lockdown 6.0 in a world vastly different from what we all new.

Globally there has been in excess of 204 million cases of the virus with 4.3 million deaths.

So how did this impact on our cricket season ? We were indeed fortunate to start as scheduled albeit a week later than anticipated, with a predominately un-interrupted program, with the exception of a one week lockdown in January.

As mentioned in last year’s report, Pete Marshall took over the reigns as Head Coach, with Al Manning, Asanka Gurusinhe and Jono Boyd providing great assistance. Asanka was duly appointed as the Head Coach for Nigeria and moved overseas just before the Christmas break.

These guys are passionate about our Cricket Club, and certainly displayed that passion and commitment across a difficult and logistically challenging season. I thank them for their time and effort, and am pleased to say that both at Board level and across the Coaching Group we share the same vision and mission to improve our Club.

The season provided some new challenges as we all felt our way along the Covid safe journey, having to check in at training, matches and when entering the Clubrooms. Afternoon teas were a thing of the past as it was no longer possible for Clubs to provide food and drinks to players, each having to bring their own. Change rooms were off limits and cricket balls required to be sanitised every 14 overs.

With restrictions on crowd numbers, our social activities were severely hampered, with capacity limits on our social rooms and numbers within the facility. This provided a major fund raising challenge and pretty much destroyed opportunity for sponsorship arrangements with many local businesses going through tough times.

With social gatherings permitted outdoors, we were indeed fortunate to be supported by our regular friends and spectators, supporting our Blaster cricket on Friday nights and our home games on Saturdays.

Off field we made some significant in-roads with our debt reduction program, and we secured Turner Road No 2 in Highett as our second Premier ground, returning our 5th and 6th XI’s to St Bedes College. We unveiled our new electronic scoreboard in Round 1, completing our current infrastructure projects, and saved our regular attendant Annette some pain and suffering from the elements.

This now puts us in place to focus on our strategic cricket direction and improving our on-field capability. We have a secure plan including processes to re-build and improve, so I’d encourage all our current players to get on board.

On the cricketing side we bolstered a secure supporting relationship with SECA to foster young players to the Premier system, and we saw the return of the Under 16 Dowling Shield to the Premier cricket fixture. These are indeed important initiatives for the Club, opening a defined pathway for talented young players to the Hawks in coming seasons. The Dowling format will migrate to an Under 17 competition in 2021/22, and will now culminate in a final series.

Many thanks to those involved in providing support to the SECA representative and Dowling sides.

Our performances across the season showed promise, drastically increasing our win/loss ratio from the previous season across all grades. We realise that we need to improve, and our focus is to attract and foster young local talent to the Club, moving forward. We have some of the best facilities in Premier cricket, an outstanding Coaching team, and a well-supported, Community focused environment, so the opportunity is available for all players to hone their skills, work hard, and improve their performances. Page 7 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

I would urge all our players to focus on their cricket, their fitness, and their improvement, and not let trivial distractions hamper the chance to get better; leave the Club stuff to the Committee, the ground activities to the Curating team, and the coaching to the Coaches.

Once again our Committee worked harder than ever to facilitate the Covid requirements, ensuring that all designated processes were followed, and keeping our members in a safe and healthy environment. Many thanks to new Administration Officer Tom Brain for his assistance, and for following the ever changing Covid protocol journey in his supplementary role of Covid officer. I’m not sure many people realise how much extra time the Covid protocols took to prepare, revise, and implement, so I thank all our Committee members for their efforts and commitment.

To Jake Marnie, Lyle D’Rozario, Jono Boyd and Matty Acocks, not moving on in a Committee role, I thank you for your efforts, and hope that you gained something for the experience. To Lyle in particular, we wish you well in your coaching endeavours and thank you for your efforts across many years at the Club, and to Matty, many thanks for looking after the Friday Night Blaster program.

Many thanks to all our Captains across all grades and competitions, particularly Jonty Noonan for taking on the 5th XI and guiding them to a final’s appearance, only to be shafted by the weather.

Our Junior program, again brilliantly led by Sue Cater, stepped up another level, with participation levels on the increase, and with the Under 12 teams again utilising Walter Galt No 2 as a home base, adding a whole new dimension to our Friday night Community cricket events.

A special thank you to all our Junior Coaches, team managers, parents, supporters and players who have made the Junior Program an outstanding area of Club culture.

Thanks also to our volunteers who provide great assistance in the roles they undertake:-

Liam Pidd – Friday night/ function barman Jo McKenzie – Saturday/function barperson Mark Ruddy – BBQ king, Cleaner, dishwasher Craig Reece – 1st XI scorer & Historian James Moloney – 2nd XI scorer Annette Cann – Scoreboard attendant Brian Hunt – Wicket/Nets maintenance/Cleaner and general handy work Kevin Sullivan – Clubroom cleaning Darren Sheehan for his general assistance and the Club Room cleaning in Kev’s absence Paul Crowe – Managing and maintaining our bar stock, and assistance with our meals on Thursday and Friday nights. Tony Hawkins for setup and dismantling the practice nets

In a year very different to normal, our social activities were kept to a minimum. We were indeed fortunate enough to celebrate the naming of our pavilion in honour of Brian Hunt and Greg McLeod. Unfortunately Greg lost his battle last October. The passing of Greg, a stalwart of the Club, Life member and Hall of Famer, has left a huge hole in the operations of the Club, and our Community in general. It is difficult to quantify the number of tasks undertaken by Greg, and it is only as we move forward, the enormity of the parts that Greg played in the Club’s development. He is, and will continue to be, sorely missed by all of us.

The upcoming 2021/22 season is approaching quickly, however we have a strange sense of de ja vu with the lead up to last season and the imposition of the Corona virus and our adaptive lifestyle. Our pre-season training regime has been interrupted and again proving a challenge for both coaches and players.

Page 8 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Lockdowns are a part of our regular daily life, and we now have several vaccines, and an important rush to get everyone vaccinated to enable some form of resemblance of a normal way of life.

We need to be brave and follow the imposed rules, getting vaccinated when we can, as this is the only opportunity for society to move forward. We need to undertake our own fitness work when permitted, and keep tabs on our mates.

There will be a cricket season, and I urge all supporters and our Community to get behind the Club, our young playing group, support where you can, stay safe and positive, and reach out to a mate, if and when it becomes a challenge.

We are all doing it tough, but if we remain positive and stay focused we will get through.

This cricket season signals the start of our new journey, fostering youth, empowering young players, and fostering gradual improvement.

Let us all get on board and support our charges.

Go Hawks!

AUDIT REPORT Qualified Opinion

The purpose of the audit is to express an opinion on the financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club, which comprises the Balance Sheet as at 31 May 2021, the Profit & Loss Statement, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies, and the responsible entities declaration.

In our opinion, except for the effect of the matters described in the “Basis of Qualified Opinion” section of our report, the accompanying financial report of Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club gives a true and fair view of the entity’s financial position as at 31 May 2021 and of its financial performance for the year then ended.

Basis for Qualified Opinion

1. Cash takings in the form of player subscriptions, bar sales and canteen sales are a significant source of revenue for Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club. The control mechanisms surrounding the receipt, collection and recording of cash prior to entry into its financial records are insufficient or unable to be subsequently verified. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding this revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to cash receipts and payments had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. We, therefore are unable to express an opinion on whether the recorded cash income and expenses are complete.

2. All assets in the Balance Sheet are represented at the purchase prices rather their current written down or market values. Additionally, Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club does not have a current record of the specific memorabilia that are in the club’s possession. Such assets have not been valued nor have they been sighted to confirm their continued existence.

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are independent of the registered entity in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board’s APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial report in . We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Other Information

The Kingston Hawthorn Hawks Cricket Club are responsible for the other information. The other information comprises the information included in the registered entity’s annual report for the year ended 31 May 2021, but does not include our auditor’s report.

Our opinion on the financial report does not cover the other information and accordingly we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon.

The scope of the audit does not extend to the other information and, thus, does not consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial report or our knowledge obtained in the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. We have nothing to report and express no opinion in this regard.

Responsibilities of Responsible Entities for the Financial Report

The responsible entities of the entity are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and for such internal control as the responsible entities determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial report, entities are responsible for assessing the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the responsible entities either intends to liquidate the registered entity or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so. Page 12 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

The responsible entities are responsible for overseeing the entity’s financial reporting process.

Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of the financial report.

As part of an audit in accordance with the Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional skepticism throughout the audit. We also:

- Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.

- Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the registered entity’s internal control.

- Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by responsible entities.

- Conclude on the appropriateness of the responsible entity’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the registered entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the registered entity to cease to continue as a going concern.

- Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.

We communicate with the entity regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.

HEAD COACH’S REPORT

Season 2020/21 Committee, Players, Life Members, Sponsors and Supporters, its my pleasure to present the Coaches report for the 20/21 season.

Certainly a roller coaster ride coming into be Development Coach to Interim, Caretaker and then appointed Senior Coach in late July. Being a Covid affected season, the landscape was very different, and limited pre season proved challenging for the Coaching Group. Getting to know the players and their abilities took time, and to be honest it was a work in progress from round 1 to 17.

Together with my great Friend and good Sporting person Alan Manning, and Jono Boyd we understand the task ahead and will show the same commitment and passion to improve our performances and provide a good environment for Young cricketers in the Bayside area,

Facilities, equipment The centre wicket and practice wickets were terrific and continual rotation helped. Many thanks to Adam and his team, Chris and Fish, also to our legend Hunty. The purchase of new covers helped, and we need to store them carefully over winter. It would be of great advantage if we could entertain centre wicket training a few more times throughout the upcoming season.

The new shed proved to be a great asset and enabled us to store and care for our training aids. Our bowling machines used constantly, and the addition of a new Bola would even be better..

Each team had dedicated warm up kits and these were of great benefit. Our rooms at the Galt were always spotless, you couldn’t fault our ground and clubhouse with the new scoreboard.

Our outfield played terrific despite some indifferent match reports which we should ignore.. haha, Purely a privilege to play at the Galt.

The addition of Frogbox live match day video streaming proved to be a vital coaching tool moving forward… many thanks for that..Brett and committee.

Committee Help Players and Coaches couldn’t have asked for anymore, and Match day with Geebung, Tom, Brett, Danny, Phil, etc was excellent. Thurs nite with Danny, Darren, Mark etc all went well, and between Tom and JR we got thru the backroom stuff. Thanks to Jake, Lyle and Cocksy for sorting apparel and social stuff, however we need more support in this area.

SECA and Dowling Programs This is our future ! We met with the SECA Board in April and re-connected with Cricket Southern Bayside. We have an agreement in place to foster the SECA Rep teams, and provide coaches and facilities for the next 3 years. We kept our word with Kim … ran their representative training, trials, and nets, and then provided coaches and venues. This enabled us to tap into the kids for the Dowling Team and we put ourselves on the map. Well done to Niv, Al, Patty and Jono. Tom for scoring, Sue for helping and all involved.

Winter Academy A 10 Session program has been conducted with assistance from Senior players and Al Manning. We had 36 boys sign up and the program I believe has run wonderfully.

Both indoor and outdoor sessions have been conducted and this is a prelude to some lads joining the Hawks, some auditioning for the Dowling Program in Jan 22, and others doing the Academy again next year.

Coaches and Staff

Head Coach: Marshy Asst Coach: Al Manning 3s and 4s Coach: Jono Boydm

Skills Coach: Pre season - Asanka Gurinsinghe

Page 15 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Practice Captain: Tony did a serviceable job and had the nets for training. Chairman of Selection: Phil O”Meara Many thanks to all gentlemen, team is better than individuals, and we provided all players with quality support and commitment.

To the Scorers and Team Managers.. Craig, James and Geebung and of course Tom Brain, you all made a wonderful commitment and great support on match days. Thank you to Annette for scoring and Emma No 1 Supporter.

Captains & Selection Many thanks and acknowledgement to the Skippers - Shorye, Lyle, Kaidan, Arun and Jonty. Jake, Matt,Tom and Riley also assisted during the year. To have stability with leadership is vital and everyone carried their duties out with dignity, respect and diligence.

Training… Structure and variety are 2 key elements to training and with excellent facilities, training was well attended throughout the entire season. Extra sessions allowed the players to utilize the nets and coaches, however we need to improve as individuals, and as a team many players need to train with more purpose and intensity.

We conducted some centre wicket nights and of course this proved to be beneficial, and had 3 practice games prior to Rnd 1 which proved to be worthwhile as we hit the ground running early doors.

Pre-season moving forward has been planned, and will involve outdoor, fitness, and 2 Indoor Centres beginning July thru to October Rnd 1. A planned weekend to Mooroopna will be a worthy opportunity to play on turf prior to the first game.

2021 Washup 18 wins out of 56 games played - 33% win ratio, 17 honourable losses, 8 bad losses

6 centurions, 25 50’s from 14 diff players,4 bowlers took a 5 for.. Sen twice

In the 1s we had 17 players play with 6 debut, In the 2s we had 27 players play, 4s we used 29 players

4 of our Dowling lads played in the premier grades, with 75 players (I think) representing the Club at Premier level.

The Club finished 16th in Club Championship

1s - 18th 2 w 13 losses 2 draws, 2s - 15th 5 w 9 losses 3 draws, 3s - 10th 7 w 7 losses 2 draws, 4s - 4 wins 9 losses 3 draws, 5s played finals with 1 win in semi, 16s in the Dowling had 3 w 2 losses and played bloody well.

1s batted our overs out on 5 occassions, 2s batted our overs out on 8 occassions, 1s only had 2 open partnerships over 40, 2s had 6 open partnerships over 40

5 times we were worse than 5/50 in the 1s, Only 2 occasions the 2s were worse than 2/50

Obviously a highlight for me was the Premier U16 Dowling program and our club getting the exposure.

We played two T20 games against local Community clubs which provided great engagement and opening our club up to the SECA community again a highlight.

Numbers at training justified what we had in place, only twice did we go indoor.

The general buy in was pleasing and the assistance from all to set up, pack up was noted. All teams had warm up kits which have been returned and we have a plentiful supply of balls which I did not start with. Tools for training were adequate and we have set up some good standards and routines. Yes we can change it up, split groups etc, pool, beach, other sports. I just felt the wickets were so good and our skills needed work, and with weekly selection we need to train our arses off….

Thurs nites were normally well attended. Well done again to Committee for the Dinners etc, and Match day was always in order by the Committee. Our Coaches prepared well and most players attended on time. Communication with the group was largely left to the Coaches and Geebung. Moving forward we will engage more and have more Strategy based meetings, plus some bonding sessions.

As for the list, I understand players come and go. I am disappointed 1 or 2 have chosen to go to other Premier clubs, however I wish them well but I cant hide my disappointment when we give so much of our time to them.

Page 16 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

To Alex, Lyle, Jake, Tom and Kaidin thank you for your time at the Hawks, espec Lyle D’Rozario a 10 year loyal servant and outstanding player and leader, Best wishes to these guys.

Premier lists need to be continually massaged and opportunity given, and we will do this. Our list is young and we will get games into the players with a mix of leadership and experience.

The pluses Moving Forward We have Great Facilities, Ownership and control of our ground, Unwaivering support from a loyal and stable committee, and Committed coaches and players, going into 2nd year understanding each other

This season saw a huge upside from previous years in field performance, with a young group invested and growing together. A return to Red Ball Cricket, gives us more time to learn our game and our mate’s game also. Super Slam will be back on Tuesday evenings, and we will continue to provide games with local clubs involving all players

Continuation of Dowling Program at Under 17 level next season and we will continue with a Local bayside feel and support

We need to Improve in : Our Work Rate at Training, Fitness and Fielding levels, Understanding your role and level of ability what is your best fit, Game smarts, and Leadership. We will provide enhanced Coaching with more 1 on 1 sessions and further develop our young playing list We will increase our Feedback to Players and offer more engagement.

Pre Season will be structured and we will look to bring experienced players to the fold through targeted recruiting

We also need to Tidy up our on and off field behaviour etc...

In closing:- In a year/season where we stop/started and ran into Game 1 on short notice, our early indicators were very positive. Practice games and training saw great vibe and that continued most of the year, however the weekly grind caught up with our group with injury, form and some players found wanting- desire and application , together with fitness.

The ability to compete and get into the contest and challenge was heartening in most grades in most games. We had significant good press and our brand is out there. Overall, we have a future to be the Destination Club in the Bayside area.

Let’s get more good cricket heads into the Club, stick tight, adopt a NO Dickhead Policy and engage young men who want to be good cricketers and good people. We need Stability and solid Group togetherness to achieve.

The Club in general is in a much better and stronger place than it was a couple of years ago. The coaching team and leadership group have prioritized giving opportunities where possible, and adding depth to the side where necessary (which we are also actively recruiting for and working on). The Club's plan is strong, and the improvements can be seen in a quantifiable manner in the win% throughout the grades

Stick together, work hard together, each player understand their role, have trust in team mates, captain and coaches, and all working towards a common goal.

Lets make the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club a great place to come and play and execute your skills in the best competition in Melbourne.

My door is always open, Yours in cricket .

FIFTH XI Covid 19, how it changed the landscape & presented challenges for cricket for Season 2020/2021!

With Covid restrictions & the season being all One Day games, it made for an interesting one!

When Chris (Porno) Murphy & I were approached &offered the captaincy of the 5 th XI, the club wanted someone with age, experience, a great cricket brain & a great leader. Porno, the obvious choice, said “No”! This old has-been hack, with a broken down body & stuff all captaincy experience said ‘Yeah, I’ll give it a crack!” It was one of the most fun & enjoyable years of cricket I’ve ever had!

We played 36 players this season, many being given an opportunity to play 4ths & even 3rds Premier cricket, which was the aim, with the 5ths being classed as a development side.

Thank you all for your support all year & the opportunity to lead you. WE HAD A GREAT YEAR, I hope you enjoyed the season & playing alongside & under me. To those that filled in when we were short, your efforts & contributions were noticed & muchly appreciated by all. To those moving on, good luck with your cricket & careers elsewhere. For the rest, I look forward to seeing you all next season.

Our best wins, playing really good team cricket, were against Beaumaris at home, Bonbeach (Premiers) at home & Cheltenham twice at home, including the Semi Final. We didn’t lose a game at home all season! We won 8 games, including the Semi Final, lost 6 & had 2 Did Not Plays. We finished 3 rd (those 2 non games, one of which for Covid against the bottom side away, proving costly) &were defeated away in the Preliminary Final by rain &the eventual premiers.

We had some great wins, as mentioned, but also some hard losses &narrow ones too, with Beaumaris away (6 runs) & the first round away (against Mordialloc by one wicket.) The losses I took hard & take full responsibility for, but were also due to different factors (low numbers, poor batting, poor bowling, poor captaincy &some bad luck!) One of my best calls of the year was in that first game giving the experience & opportunity to & backing two U/16 boys ( Luke Sullivan &Cory Cater) to bowl out the last 8 overs of the innings. Whilst we lost the game by one wicket, I was full of praise for their efforts &how they bowled, & we all learnt a lot. (These two boys having really good seasons, with them playing 4ths &even 3rds Premier Cricket! Well done boys!)

There were some great bowling performances this season, with Seb Anderson 6/9 &Kovid Katta 5/13 our stand outs, & with all of our bowlers toiling hard & bowling pretty well. Our batting was good at times through the year, with 4 players posting scores above 50 (Seamus McIlroy, Cory Cater, James Vakis & Ishpreet Singh). There were plenty of 40’s, 30’s &starts too, with Kovid & Anarug Thakur having very consistent games & seasons with the bat. With our fielding, we were the best fielding side in our grade, getting quite a few direct-hit runouts, we were considered the benchmark & set high standards.

I’d like to thank the leadership crew of my Vice Captain Riley Sheldon, Matt Miles, Porno (early on) Kovid & Blake Foreshew. We got as far as we did, (and we know we could’ve gone further) through your help, insights, nous, advice &ideas, &your leadership, application &efforts in the games & at training, & on & off the field.

Congratulations to our award winners & to all of our club award winners, especially also to Sue Cater on winning the “Brian Hunt Best Club Person Award”. Speaking of Hunty, thank you so much for preparing a wicket for us to play on each week. To Pete Marshall, Al Manning & Jono Boyd for your coaching, Phil O’Meara & the selection team, especially to the best President in Premier Cricket Brett Sebire, the committee, Coxy, JR Noonan &Tommy Brain, & G Bung with the Social Media support, you all worked so hard this year keeping the club running & in making it a really good season under trying conditions &difficult times, thank you ALL (and to Sheeza) so much for your help, guidance &support all year!

To all of the players, sponsors &supporters, thank you for making, what was such a difficult & memorable season, a more enjoyable one! Page 18 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Finally, the 5 th XI will continue to be a development side, with the importance & main priority being the 4 Premier sides above us!

The club will give players the opportunity for a game each week in the 5ths that have missed out in playing Premier Cricket. The captain will give the players all of the opportunities he can, they will be encouraged, monitored, appraised & then promoted due to consistent performances, & we continually will push & feed players into the 4ths & 3rds.

BUT we, the 5ths, were left with a sour taste in our mouths at season’s end, & a fire still burns deep in our bellies!

We have unfinished business, our aim is to get redemption by going a few steps further in Season 2021/2022 & hoisting up some silverware for the club.

John Noonan Captain 5th XI

Season 2020-2021 has been a successful season seeing the highest number of junior players representing our club since the forming of Kingston Hawthorn and the formation of a strong Cricket Pathway for the future.

A successful Junior Blasters program was run by Matt Cox with contributions from the senior playing group.

An U16 representative side representing Kingston Hawthorn coached by Peter Marshall, Nivin Sathyajith (past Kingston Saints Junior player), Prajay Paramesh and Jono Vincent. This sets up the pathway for the juniors to progress into District Cricket. Both Luke Sullivan and Cory Cater making it into the squad.

U16B- A successful merged side of 14 players from Kingston Hawthorn and Bayside Cricket Clubs that has been together for the last two seasons. Coached by Chris Sullivan and Stephen McMahan. They won 6 of their 11 matches drawing one and losing 4 to finish 4th on the ladder. They played their best game of the season beating Aspendale to make it into their first Grand Final unfortunately going down to Le Page.

The U14B’s played their first season with a full side of Kingston Hawthorn players. They had to play in the Central B grade competition which is the most competitive of the B Grade competitions, this was another step up from what they have played before. The team coached by Chris Reeves and Andrew Hunter, played well together and had a lot of fun, their skills had noticeably improved with some great individual performances. They won 3 of their matches with some very close losses and improved in every game.

U12d Gold Coached by Jake Ellen had 12 players for a competition of 9 a side. The team won 10 games losing only once. There were many outstanding performances during the season both batting and bowling. The team mainly top age U12’s in their second season of cricket are looking forward to a tougher competition in the U14b grade side next season. A special mention to young allrounder Jordy Ellen for winning the Junior Club Championship award.

U12d Blue coached by Mark Davies also had 12 players for a competition of 9 a side. They were ecstatic to win the first game of the season and were able to grab another win towards the latter stages of the season. The youngsters improved their skills week after week again with some awesome individual performances. They all have another season in U12’s

A big thank you to all of the coaches and Senior players that contributed, parents, committee and of course players for everything they contributed. U14B REPORT

Over the past few seasons we have struggled to fully field a side without assistance (ie transient merger) from other clubs. Hence, it was quite a pleasant surprise for Andrew and myself when we realised we would have a full contingent to start the 2020/21 season.

We were quietly optimistic about our season ahead and being placed in the 'B' section, we knew we were going to be facing some strong opposition. In round 3 we faced off with Bentleigh 3 and unfortunately went down in a nail biter by just 1 run! (8-95 v 5-96) Some individual performances to acknowledge include 41* to Josh White (notching his retirement with a massive 6 over mid wicket), 13 runs to both Lincoln Mackenzie and Will Reeves, and a very tidy 1/2 off 2.0 overs from Will Hunter.

This strong form continued into Rd 4 where we successfully notched up our first win for the season, defeating Beaumaris 2 (3- 105 v 6-96). Significant contributions with the willow from Noah Ryan (41* not out) and Max Sullivan (19 runs), and with the ball 2 wickets each to Alex Fenech (2/17) and Lachlan Sullivan (2/10).

In Rd 6 we also put in a super team performance to beat East Sandringham2 by 38 runs. Alex Fenech was again on fire with the ball in hand (4/15 off 4 overs) and was well supported in the field by his 'wickie', Will Reeves, taking 4 catches and being involved in 1 . From a batting perspective, there were multiple contributors and it was pleasing to see confidence and self belief growing with more time spent in the middle, this displayed no more so than Lachie Sullivan (13 runs) and Hunter Lynch (16* not out).

The final round also stands out as our most comprehensive win for the season, overcoming the 1 run defeat in Rd 3 against Bentleigh (and extreme hot and windy conditions), to have their measure and win. They made 6-83, with our 'work in progress leggie' Lachie Sullivan claiming 3/13, and the 'outswing king' Will Hunter claiming 3/8. We passed their score only 12 overs in and 3 wickets down, and given the trying conditions were happy to call it a day. Josh McInerney saved his best batting until the last round, starting timidly and then growing in confidence with each run, making 26* not out (and well and truly on his way to retiring as well).

Page 21 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

As it turns out, we finished the season in 8th position (out of 10), however, had we batted on in the last round, we would have surpassed Beaumaris on percentage and comfortably claimed 7th position.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Tom 'Spizz-a-lish', Lachie Mulcahy and Xavier Beck, all of whom are valuable members of the team, and are always attentive and eager to improve with every training session. The bottom age fellas (Lachie, Lincoln and Xavier) will retain their positions in u14's again next season, and I have no doubt they will be great role models for the younger kids and lead the way exceptionally.

Although it is a team game, there were some individual awards to acknowledge:

Batting Award: Josh White (168 runs, avg 28) Bowling Award: Josh McInerney (8 wickets, avg 7.88) Fielding Award: Will Reeves (9 catches, 2 stumpings as WK) Coaches Award: Hunter Lynch

On behalf of Andrew and myself, I would like to commend the boys on their efforts this season. They are an extremely coachable and impressionable group of young men, and we have thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and banter displayed both on and off the field.

A final thank you to all parents who happily volunteered their time to score, assist with set-up and simply be there to support the team. And of course, the junior cricket club would not be where it is today without the outstanding efforts of its co- ordinator, Sue Cater. Thank you Sue !

We're looking forward to the 2021/22 season, fingers crossed our kids can get out there and enjoy what is a fabulous team game - without any restrictions!

Go Hawks

Chris Reeves and Andrew Hunter.

U16B REPORT

The U/16’s took to the field with a very similar team to last season as a merged side with Bayside. With 13 players to choose we had to sit two players out each week however everyone took it in their stride and there were never any complaints.

With Covid resulting in a late start to the season, the league mandated that all games would be one day fixtures of 20 overs a side. With the previous season having not gone our way in terms of wash outs or heat affected games, it was important to try and get away to a good start. And to the boy’s credit they did exactly that, with one of our best performances of the year in Rd 1 where we made a competitive 4/109 and then rolled Le Page Park for 60 in under 15 overs.

At the Christmas break, the boys were sitting equal top of the ladder having only lost one game in the first five matches - a close loss to Aspendale at home. The restart after Christmas saw us continue where we left off with 3 great wins before Covid struck at the start of February that resulted in a lost round. The boys stumbled a little losing twice to Mordialloc in the space of 3 days (quirk of the SECA draw) before taking on St Brigids/St Louis in the final round where a win would guarantee finals and a loss would leave us fighting for 4th spot. In a tight game the boys went down by 5 runs but fortunately we still managed to scrape into 4th by 0.06%.

Despite going into finals having dropped our last 3 games of the season, both coaches and players knew that our best was still definitely good enough against any of the finalists. The semi final proved exactly that, with what was the best game the group had played in the two years of being a merged side. Taking on the top side Aspendale at their home ground, we rattled off 3/106 in our 20 overs with Cory and Kane making great contributions. In reply Aspendale were on the ropes from the first over and a great team performance saw us roll them for 70. It was fitting reward for the boys, resulting in (for the Kingston Hawks boys at least) their first grand final since starting juniors over 6 years ago.

In the grand final we were up against Le Page Park at their home ground, the side we had convincingly beaten way back in Rd 1. In what was a complete reversal of that game, unfortunately we were on the back foot from the first ball and a continuous loss of wickets saw us at one stage stumble to 6/9. A great knock from Johnny at the end saw us scramble to 82 off our 20 overs. Unfortunately we couldn’t replicate our bowling effort from the semi final and they eventually passed us in the 13th over.

Page 22 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Whilst it was a disappointing final game, it did not detract from what was a fantastic final season of junior cricket for a majority of these boys. Both of us have seen their cricket development over the course of 6 years and it was fitting that they made the grand final in their final game together.

Congratulations to Cory on winning the batting and bowling awards in what was a great season.

A big thankyou to all the parents for helping out throughout the season, especially our dedicated scorers Paul and Bridget Finally a very big thankyou to Sue Cater, not only in her role as our team manager but the great job she does as Junior co-ordinator at Kingston Hawks. Sue certainly makes it easy for us as coaches to do just that as Sue takes care of everything else. Thanks Sue

Its been great fun coaching these boys over the last few years and seeing them grow from boys into young men. We wish them all the best in their future cricket endeavours.

Chris Sullivan and Steve McMahon.

OBITUARIES

The Club offers their condolences to players and members who have suffered bereavements during the past year.

GRAHAM ARTHUR: B 9. 6.1936 D: 10.01.2021 The former, Hawthorn-East Melbourne cricketer, Graham Arthur, passed away on 10 January 2021. He was 84 years of age. Born in Bendigo, his sporting talents took him to Melbourne where he became a champion footballer with , debuting for them in 1955.

In the same year, he played cricket with H-EM when he represented the Second XI. In 1958, a score of 83 (v Prahran) for the Second XI earned him a place in the strong H-EM First XI team for the match at North Melbourne, playing alongside future Hawthorn Football Club team-mate, Ian Law.

On his debut, Arthur contributed 1 and 5 to Hawthorn’s outright win. He next scored 25 against South Melbourne, but after a further game, against University, was returned to the Second XI. At the time, the Club, H-EM, was extremely strong and boasted ten players who would play first-class cricket. With Arthur finding a place in the First XI difficult to hold, he transferred to Fitzroy, where he played a further twelve, First XI District Cricket matches.

However, it was at football that he would become one of the most decorated and respected Hawthorn footballers, in the Clubs rich history. He played over 200 matches for Hawthorn and was a premiership player and captain, a Club best and fairest winner, a coach, was honoured with Life Membership, inducted into the Hall of Fame and named captain of the Hawthorn Football Club ‘Team of the Century’. He represented Victoria and was an AFL Life Member. His was an illustrious football career.

DR. NIKOLA (NIK) CHOSICH: B 28. 9.1958 D: 5.11.2020 Nik Chosich was a right-handed batsman, who joined the Hawthorn-East from Gardiner Ewing Cricket Club where, in 1978, he was the leading First XI batsman. His initial cricket, however, was played at Wesley College.

Chosich played for the Hawthorn-East Melbourne from 1979 until 1983. He represented the H-EM Second XI, in 1980, but played mostly with the lower elevens. In 1981-82, he was a member of the Premiership winning Fifth XI, scoring 50 in the final against Box Hill. His highest score for the Club was 88 against Deepdene also in the successful premiership season.

In all elevens, for H-EM, Nik scored over a thousand runs at the respectable average of 39.26. In 1983, he left Hawthorn before, later, enjoying a successful career with Burwood Uniting C.C. He also returned to play some cricket and football with Old Wesley Collegians.

Nik studied medicine and became a respected endocrinologist, who was well regarded for his professional dedication and diligence to his patients..

MICHAEL FITCHETT: B: 30.11.1927 D: 1. 4.2021

The former Hawthorn-East Melbourne and Victorian batsman, Michael Fitchett – pictured above in 1950 - passed away in April 2021, aged 93. He was, one of the most talented sportsman that have represented the Club, being a first-class cricketer, VFL footballer and champion golfer.

Michael’s early sporting career commenced at Scotch College, where, he represented the school at cricket and football. In 1945, he was the Scotch College Football Captain. After leaving school (1946) he played for Old Scotch in the Amateurs. His football skills were such that Hawthorn recruited him and he would play 30 matches in the VFL as an alert centre-man.

Fitchett would spend much of his sporting career at Glenferrie Oval. When not playing with the football team, he played cricket with the H-EM cricket club. He was a steady, right-handed batsman. His debut with the H-EM First XI was in 1945-46, at Carlton, where he made 1 and 15 not out. However, from 1947 to 1948 he spent much of his time playing lower eleven cricket, honing his skills. By late 1948, he was a regular member of the First XI. In March of 1950, he played in the first of three premierships with H-EM. His own contribution to the team’s success in the final was disappointing, being bowled by Melbourne and Victorian paceman, Jack Daniel, for 2.

In 1950-51, Fitchett led the H-EM batting scoring over 650 runs at an average of nearly 55. He also scored his only First XI century – 138 at Prahran – and was a member of a second premiership team, although he failed to score in the final where his captain, Allan Dick, scored 177. Fitchett compensated for his ‘’ somewhat, by taking 3 for 48 with his, smartly bowled, off-breaks.

He would continue to be a regular member of the H-EM First XI throughout the 1950’s and played in another premiership team in 1955-56, when, as bad fortune would have it, he made another ‘duck’. It mattered not. The H-EM team was a powerful combination. Ten of their First XI played first-class cricket!

Fitchett’s outstanding, youthful ability, was recognised very early in his career by the Victorian selectors. In December of 1950, he was chosen to captain the Victorians on his first-class debut. It was a rare honour. His own form on the tour of Tasmania, was disappointing, scoring 23 runs in three innings, but the Victorians won both matches.

When he was next chosen, in November 1951, to make his Sheffield Shield debut in Perth he played alongside Hawthorn team- mates, John Chambers and Allan Dick. In his only innings, Fitchett gained the pleasure of another rarity, scoring a century on his Shield debut, his 108 taking 190 minutes. Despite his very good century the following week, against South Australia in Adelaide, he made a ‘pair’!

Retiring from cricket, Michael successfully pursued golf where he was, seven times, Metropolitan golf club champion. This included five titles in the 1960’s. Metropolitan named their champion trophy in his honour, acknowledging his fine contribution to the Club and the game. He was, for 22 years, a member of the Victorian Golf Association and a selector and manager of Victorian teams. He was deservedly awarded Hon. Life Membership of Golf Victoria.

Michael Fitchett’s H-EM First XI career statistics from 1945-46 to 1956-57 are:

JOHN (JACK) KIRBY: B: 29.10.1932 D: 10.08.2020

Jack Kirby, who passed away in August 2020, was a very talented right-handed batsmen, who established many records in the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Association. He was also a very good medium-pace bowler, and a capable wicket-keeper.

A batsmen with the North Balwyn Cricket Club, he, as a youth he showed enormous talent. Selectors wasted no time and he was chosen to represent the U23 Victorian team at two Interstate Junior Cricket Carnivals, in 1951 and 1952.

In 1952, at Adelaide, he was the leading Victorian batsman and scored two centuries, 121 against South Australia and 156 against N.S.W. Page 24 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

After his success at Adelaide, Hawthorn-East Melbourne invited him to the Club. He made his First XI debut in January 1953, at Prahran, where he top scored in each innings. Played on a ‘sporting wicket’ Kirby, in the first innings made 17 of Hawthorn’s 83 and in the second innings smashed a quick 63 (33 minutes) with ten 4’s and a six. It was an exhilarating performance and nearly won the match for H-EM, Prahran ending their second innings at 84 for nine, still requiring 43 runs for victory.

In December 1953, Jack made a dashing 58 against Northcote. Opening the innings with Vic Woolf, they added 119 for the first wicket, the first H-EM century opening partnership for three years.

Yet, despite the immense talent, Jack Kirby only played 11 First XI matches with H-EM. Starved of opportunity, in 1956 he transferred to Footscray, where he played 18 matches over three years.

Mostly, however, Kirby was content to score thousands of runs for his local club, North Balwyn, of which he became a favourite son and a prodigious scorer.

In 395 matches he scored over 15,000 runs and was the first batsman in the ESCA to score over a thousand runs in a season. He scored 33 centuries and won numerous Club and Association batting averages.

GREGORY MICHAEL MCLEOD B: 2. 9.1955 D: 28.10.2020 The passing of Greg McLeod, on the eve of the season in October 2020, removed from the Club one the most tireless cricketers and workers the Club has known.

Greg was a foundation member of the St John Vianney’s Cricket Club, formed in 1975. He was later involved in the merger with St. Bede’s Old Collegians C.C. to form Kingston Saints and of their taking a place in the Sub-District competition. He was also involved in another merger when, in 2015, Kingston Saints merged with Hawthorn-East Melbourne, which saw the ‘new’ club compete as Kingston Hawthorn in the Premier Cricket competition.

In his playing career, Greg played primarily as an opening batsman and wicket-keeper. In 247 matches he scored over 5,000 runs.

Throughout his playing career, Greg maintained a place on the Clubs committee and in all, served in this position for 44 years as well as completing stints as President, Secretary and Treasurer.

He was a Life Member of the Club and was elevated to the Clubs Hall of Fame in 2017, one of only 15 persons to be honoured so, in more than 140 years.

Greg was a student of the game of cricket and following the merger with H-EM was genuinely interested in understanding where the East Melbourne Club had come from and of the many talented cricketers that had represented the Club. Greg was, in 2018, an interested attendee at the MCG for the book-launch of ‘Patriotic Cricketers’ the Clubs book honouring those cricketers who served in the First World War.

Following the merger with H-EM Greg was a regular and welcoming presence at Walter Galt and made the Hawthorn-East Melbourne persons feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Fittingly, in March 2020, Greg – and Brian Hunt – were both honoured with an official function to open the newly named pavilion, now known as the Hunt – McLeod Pavilion.

For several decades Greg, and Robyn, gave freely of their time, as either player or administrator, for the benefit of the Club.

Greg’s loyalty to the Club will be sorely missed

FROM THE PRESSBOX Kingston Hawthorn forging links with southern bayside clubs (Extract from Leader Newspaper 14 July 2020 written by Paul Amy) The Hawks are setting out the welcome mat to clubs and players from the South East Cricket Association and Cricket Southern Bayside as they look to build long-term success.

When Peter Marshall joined Kingston Hawthorn in a development role, he was quick to say he would be trying to “open a few doors’’ in the bayside cricket scene. Marshall figured that for the Hawks to set up long-term success in Premier Cricket, they needed to forge stronger ties with the South East Cricket Association and Cricket Southern Bayside.

A few weeks on, and now the club’s caretaker senior coach, he’s made good progress.

Matthew Vorbach hits off the back foot for Brighton Union The Hawks have held talks with SECA great Kim Pitt and will be supplying coaches for the association’s junior representative Under 16 team.

And clubs from both competitions will be invited to send their promising players to Kingston Hawthorn training.

“What we’ll do on each Tuesday night during the season is have two or three young cricketers from a club come down and join in training,’’ Marshall said.

“They might come from Parkdale, might come from Bonbeach, might come from Brighton Union, might come from West Bentleigh, from any of those bayside clubs, Beaumaris, McKinnon.

“We want to open up that avenue, have them train on turf and see what a Premier club looks like and what the expectation is for players if they want to come and join us.’’

In another positive, Brighton Union batsman Matthew Vorbach has joined Kingston Hawthorn to try his luck in Premier Cricket.

Vorbach is one of the best young players in SECA, catching attention two years ago with an innings of 113 not out in a Longmuir Shield preliminary final against West Bentleigh.

He followed up by making 581 runs at 44.7 last season, including another century, 102 not out against Bentleigh ANA. Hawks coach Peter Marshall Vorbach also bowls handy off-spin.

“I know him from when I was a development coach at McKinnon, he umpired for us (in the Southern league) and I know his dad, Neil, who is a bit of a local legend,’’ Marshall said.

“His brother (Jack) plays footy at Parkdale Vultures in the amateurs, so he’s a true bayside boy and he’s the sort of kid we want to bring into the fold and give that opportunity to play Premier Cricket.’’

The Hawks also expect to lock in a well-regarded pathways player next week and to recruit other local youngsters keen to try their hand at Premier level.

They have secured Moorabbin Sub-District batsman Romain Grenville and fast bowler Damsara Menuwara, and Box Hill all- rounder Ashish Matthew.

Page 26 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

The club had a players’ information night set down for July 27 but the meeting and training are on hold because of the coronavirus crisis.

“It’s a shame, because things are jumping,’’ Marshall said.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve got the Hawks flying but we’re almost in take off.’’

Kingston Hawthorn locks in Asanka Gurusinha in coaching role (Extract from Leader Newspaper 12 June 2020 written by Paul Amy) The former Sri Lankan batsman will be part of the Hawks’ coaching panel as they cover the absence of Ben Williams.

With Ben Williams staying in New Zealand, Kingston Hawthorn had to quickly reorganise its coaching resources.

Earlier in the week Peter Marshall was appointed interim head coach or, to use his colourful description, “chief cook and bottlewasher’’.

Now the Hawks have installed former Sri Lankan star Asanka Gurusinha as batting coach.

Gurusinha played 41 Tests and 147 ODIs for Sri Lanka, and has had Asanka Gurusinha attacking Australian bowling in 1996 extensive coaching experience since his retirement from international cricket.

He also played Premier Cricket at North Melbourne and Prahran. “He is well credentialed and has developed and fostered cricket talent across the globe,’’ Kingston Hawthorn president Brett Sebire said of Gurusinha. “The Hawks are delighted to welcome Asanka to the coaching panel, and look forward to a great learning experience for our players.’’

Marshall said: “He’ll bring mental toughness and IQ to the players.’’

Marshall has stepped into the main role in the absence of Williams, who is facing a long stay in his native New Zealand.

Williams returned to the country after last season, was caught up in the coronavirus pandemic lockdown and is dealing with a family illness. His wife, Lauren, is also expecting their second child. The Hawks said it was a family-first situation.

“It is not currently feasible for Ben to return or commute on a regular basis, so I, in consultation with cricket director Phil O’Meara, have permitted Ben a leave of absence, for as long as he requires,’’ Sebire said.

“There is no expectation on a return date at this point, but we will remain supportive of Ben and family and leave any return up to Ben.

“I have been in continuing discussions with Ben, and we both agree, that given the circumstances, he should remain in New Zealand, welcome a new little Williams to the family, and support Lauren and her family through these tough times.

“We agree that this is a difficult outcome for all and wish the Williams family our very best wishes for the weeks and months ahead and extend our support across the Tasman. Once the path is clear for Ben, he will return to continue his coaching role with KHCC.’’

Marshall said he was happy to take on the role and would head up a coaching group.

The former league football umpire is coming off a four-year tenure at Subbies club Malvern. Kingston Hawthorn struggled last season, finishing on the bottom of the ladder in all four grades. “I’m up for the challenge,’’ Marshall declared.

Page 27 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

“I’m an old bloke, I’ve been around the traps, I’m passionate. There’s only one way for the club and that’s up, and it’s going to take hard work. I tell you now, the first training session, we’ll be running 5km and I’ll be out the front running with them, because we’re going to have to become the fittest team and the best fielding team in the comp and the rest will follow.’’

He added: “What I want us to do is earn some respect in Premier Cricket. It’s that simple.’’

Kingston Hawthorn is desperate to recruit a fast bowler, having lost the capable Jack Fowler to Dandenong.

Hawks gain 23 new players for 2020-21 Premier Cricket season (Extract from Leader Newspaper 28 October 2020 written by Paul Amy) There will be a new look – and hopefully improved results – for Kingston Hawthorn next season, with coach Peter Marshall saying up to nine newcomers could fill First and Second XI positions in the opening round. Coach Peter Marshall has weighed the numbers and believes Kingston Hawthorn could have up to nine newcomers in its first two teams in the opening round of Premier Cricket.

With more than 60 players on their books, the Hawks will begin training as a club tonight.

As per Cricket Victoria’s COVID-19 protocols, 33 players – three groups of 11 – will hit the track tonight and another 33 tomorrow night.

Shorye Chopra is likely to be named captain of Kingston The groups will shuttle between “rotation stations’’ in the nets, fitness and Hawthorn for 2020-21 fielding, in 40-minute blocks.

“We will train within the COVID rules. We will not break ranks. We’ll follow Cricket Victoria’s guidelines all the way,’’ Marshall said. He said Kingston Hawthorn had 23 new players in the squad, most notably former Moorabbin Sub-District captain-coach Romain Grenville and Brighton Union batsman Matt Vorbach.

Other recruits include batsmen Ashish Mathew from Box Hill, Abi Jain from Ashwood Willows and Deakin University, and Vimesh Wickramasinghe from Haig Fawkner in the VTCA; leg-spinner Bupa Munasinghe from Dandenong; and allrounder Rahul Rajeshbabu from Moorabbin.

The tall Rajeshbabu is in the Cricket Victoria Under 17 male emerging performance squad. Nivin Sathyajith, who made a good impression in the First XI last season, has been joined at the Hawks by his brothers Sen and Vithum Sathyajith, both Cranbourne juniors and both pathways players with the Southern Pioneers.

Sen also had a stint at Dandenong last season.

“There will possibly be eight or nine of them in the ones and twos for the first game, after we’ve had a good look at them,’’ Marshall said of the signings.

“So there will be a fresh look about the place, a bit more depth and hopefully some improved results.’’

The Hawks will have a scratch match between themselves before tackling Frankston Peninsula in practice games in all four grades. Emerging Moorabbin all-rounder Rahul Rajeshbabu has joined Kingston Round 1 is set down for November 21 but could be pushed back a week or two. Hawthorn

The Hawks have had a thin time of it in the past few seasons – last season they finished on the bottom in all four grades – and Marshall is making no grandiose statements about their prospects for 2020-21. All he wants is for the Hawks to show improvement and be competitive.

“We just want to get into games. When teams come to Walter Galt this year they won’t be gifted the six points,’’ Marshall said.

“Our focus is on getting into the contest and challenging the other teams. That’s all we want to do. I’m not going to sit here and say how many wins we’re going to get. Like I said, we just want to be competitive, stay in the contest for longer and be a in a position to take some points. There won’t be any points handed out on a plate.’’ Marshall said he regarded Premier Cricket as similar to the VFL.

“These boys are one level off elite cricket, the same way VFL players are one level off the AFL,’’ he said.

“That’s how we’ve got to run the club, at that high level of professionalism and commitment.’’ Marshall has leading former Sri Lankan batsman Asanka Gurusinha and bayside cricket identity Al Manning as his assistant coaches.

He said Gurusinha was “absolutely ready to go to impart his knowledge on our young cricketers, and all the lads are excited to work with him’’.

Classy top-order batsman Shorye Chopra is tipped to be appointed First XI captain.

Recruits set to debut in Premier Cricket for Kingston Hawthorn (Extract from Leader Newspaper 26 November 2020 written by Paul Amy) The Hawks will have a string of new faces in their firsts and seconds teams in Round 1 of the season.

A few weeks ago Kingston Hawthorn coach Peter Marshall predicted there would be a new look to all four XIs for the season- opening rounds of Victorian Premier Cricket.

It will start at the top.

A number of the Hawks’ recruits for 2020-21 will push for debuts in the firsts when the side visits Casey South Melbourne for Round 1 on Saturday.

Brighton Union batsman Matthew Vorbach has made an excellent impression in pre-season training and in the practice matches, and will almost certainly get the selectors’ nod.

“A really good player,’’ was the word from a veteran in the South East Cricket Association on Vorbach, who last season cracked 581 runs at 44.7, with one century.

In the previous season he took SECA scribe Mark Missen’s headlines with an innings of 113 not out in a Longmuir Shield preliminary final.

Vorbach was one of the first recruits Marshall lured to the club when he took over as coach.

“At 22 he’s the ideal player you want coming into Premier Cricket,’’ Marshall said.

“He’s matured in a strong synthetic-wicket competition and he’s ready to step into Premier firsts.

“He likes to get on with it – he averaged over 100 in the T20s in the SECA last season – and he’s a very underrated off-spinner and an excellent fieldsman in the ring. He understands his own game.

“That said, he’s going to need some time to adjust on turf and we’ll give him that time with players like Ramneet Dhindsa and (new captain) Shorye Chopra.’’

Page 29 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Marshall said Brighton Union should be applauded for supporting Vorbach’s move to Premier Cricket.

Former Moorabbin captain-coach Romain Grenville is also expected to get a First XI start on Saturday.

The attacking right-hander will also be a bowling option with his right-arm medium pace. Grenville had a stint at Frankston Peninsula in 2007-08 and North Melbourne in 2010-11, playing a total of six First XI matches.

But his dash at the top of the order, his competitive streak and his experience should make him a good addition to Kingston Hawthorn.

Abhishek Jain, an attacking batsman from Ashwood, and all-rounder Harry Singh, from Point Cook, are also in contention to debut.

Singh bowls right-arm pace and is capable with the bat.

The Swans are tipped to select fast bowler Cal Dodson from Cricket Southern Bayside club Aspendale for his first match.

Marshall said it was pleasing to see Dodson make the move to Premier Cricket, noting he had battled “huge adversity’’ in the form of a cancer diagnosis in 2017.

Kingston Hawthorn scraped along the bottom of the ladder in all four grades last season.

The firsts put in some dismal performances and Marshall has set their sights on nothing more than being competitive.

“We just want to get into games. When teams come to Walter Galt this year they won’t be gifted the six points,’’ he said. Romain Grenville bowling for Moorabbin last season

Kingston Hawthorn newcomer Abhi Jain blasts 148 off 107 balls (Extract from Leader Newspaper 6 December 2020 written by Paul Amy) A blistering century from a second-gamer helped Kingston Hawthorn to defeat Frankston Peninsula in Premier Cricket. Keep it quiet, Kingston Hawthorn coach Peter Marshall said a few weeks ago, but we’ve found a good player.

A kid from Deakin University, he said.

He might play early in the season. Maybe even Round 1.

Watch out for him. His name’s Abhi Jain.

A lot of people in Victorian Premier Cricket will be getting to know the Abhi Jain acknowledges applause for his century as he name after Jain’s innings against Frankston Peninsula at the Walter Galt walks from the ground Reserve on Saturday.

The 20-year-old right-hander blitzed 148 off 107 balls to lead the Hawks to a strong win that helped ease their disappointment of falling to Casey South Melbourne in Round 1 after being in a strong position.

The home team rattled up 7-317 off its 50 overs and had the Heat 5-182 off 40.1 when rain arrived.

Page 30 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Kingston Hawthorn was declared the winner on run rate.

It was 5-136 when captain Shorye Chopra was run out for 30, but Jain and wicketkeeper Joel Lewis took the Hawks to the verge of 300 with a dazzling 147-run partnership.

Jain sent the white ball whistling to all parts of the ground, and by the time he was bowled trying to squeeze a full-ball to third man, he had clattered 13 fours and 8 sixes, one of them over cover.

A clip to mid-on for a single brought up his century.

Lewis gave him excellent support with 45 off 40 balls.

Kingston Hawthorn officials raved about Jain’s innings, which followed his hand of 30 against the Swans.

Club great Phil O’Meara, the former WA batsman, said: “Haven’t seen anything like it for a while. Played 360 degrees, sensational. He’s an Abhi Jain relaxes during the innings break outstanding player. For a little bloke he’s got a lot of power.

“His last 50 came off 23 balls or something like that. Great pick-up for the club.’’

Kingston Hawthorn administration manager Tom Brain said: “Fantastic innings. Never played Premier or Subbies before he came to us. His power was incredible.’’

Jain is from India and arrived in Australia early last year to study sports management and accounting at Deakin University.

He had been on standby for the Delhi Under 19 squad and played in the schoolboys national titles for five years.

“It’s a great feeling,’’ Jain said in the innings break.

“I felt pretty well. I was seeing the ball pretty well in the end.’’ Marshall sat next to him as he spoke, their grins as wide at the pavilion behind them. Jain played a handful of matches for Ashburton in the Eastern association last season – with no great success, it must be said – but had to return to India over visa issues.

Wanting to play at Premier level to test himself, he sent an email to Marshall in the pre-season and was thrilled when the Hawks invited him to train.

His form in the practice matches prompted Marshall and his match committee to select the newcomer for Round 1. He was in tears after the loss to the Swans, disappointed he couldn’t bat Kingston Hawthorn to victory.

Jain gave a chance when he was on 61, the Heat dropping a catch that should have been taken, and he made the visitors pay plenty for the mistake.

Frankston Peninsula had a respectable reply in the works when rain intervened, with Ryan Hammel (64) and captain Brodie Symons (70) putting on 118 for the third wicket.

Harvinder Singh, another newcomer for Kingston Hawthorn, had 3-25 off 7.1 overs of sharp right-arm bowling when players were forced from the ground.

Premier win: Kingston Hawthorn upsets undefeated St Kilda (Extract from Leader Newspaper 17 January 2021 written by Paul Amy) The Saints hadn’t been beaten this season but the Hawks surprised them at the Junction Oval.. It was first against 16th.

It was the top team, unbeaten St Kilda, playing at home against third-from- the-bottom Kingston Hawthorn.

And it was a boilover of scalding proportions.

Even as a few of the players had to look up the words to it, the Hawks sang their song with gusto on Saturday after pulling off a victory even more surprising than Frankston Peninsula’s defeat of Melbourne in the previous round. Happy Hawks: the Kingston Hawthorn players come off the ground after defeating St Kilda After being sent in under grey skies and on a wicket that had spent the night under covers, they raised 182, and then dismissed the Saints for 155.

It was hard to recall the last time the Hawks had beaten St Kilda. In fact, it was in 2016-17, in a T20, when they cobbled together 6-136 and rolled the Saints for 110.

From that side, only Shorye Chopra remains in the Hawks’ XI.

Chopra is now captain and he top scored with 49 on Saturday to give his team a fighting total.

The Hawks had started in style, with openers Romain Grenville and Thaveesh Attanayke putting up 50 in 11 overs, Grenville blasting, Attanayake nudging.

But Grenville, after muscling 35 off 36 deliveries, with 5 fours and 1 six, gave it away, swinging wildly at paceman Will Lovell and skying the ball, Saints keeper Patrick Rowe taking it safely.

In came No 3 Matt Vorbach – and out he went after opting not play to play at a that flattened his off-stump.

Chopra saw off the hat-trick. Like Lovell, Josh Bartlett was on a hat-trick after removing Abi Jain (1) and Chopra (49) with successive deliveries. The skipper’s runs came off 84 balls and included 2 fours and a six sweetly struck over mid- on off Jon Merlo. Left-hander Attanayake, promoted after a Second XI century, persisted for 31 off 68 deliveries before holing out off spinner Todd Murphy.

Ashish Mathew hit a handy 21 later in the innings, falling to young quickie Lovell, who nabbed 4-45 off his 10 overs.

Bartlett had 3-25 off his 10 and paceman Henry Thornton clipped the tail – and clanged a helmet or two – for 2-28.

St Kilda shed top three Michael De Iavoco (0), Josh Manning (14) and Merlo (4) cheaply, leaving it to captain Adam Crosthwaite to supervise the run chase, as he did successfully last week against Prahran.

He lost Rowe (17) and Ben Davies (14), but at 5-141 the home team still looked on course Jade Christensen took two wickets for for victory, if not another bonus point. the Saints

But the Saints had a collapse of 5-14 after Crosthwaite played on to Mathew for 66 (off 101 balls and with six boundaries). Page 32 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Mathew slipped in with 2-20 off six overs, but Harry Singh’s burst with the new ball, when he got rid of the dangerous De Iacovo and state squad member Merlo, set the Hawks on their way. He returned to take two more wickets and finish with 4-35 off eight overs.

Jade Christensen (2-15 off eight) and Grenville (2-33 off 10) did their bit too, as did spinner Prateek Patil, who didn’t take a wicket, but did clamp an end, conceding only 23 runs from his 10 overs. He also took a sharp catch at cover to dismiss De Iacovo.

“An even contribution, which is what we’re always looking for,’’ a chuffed Kingston Hawthorn coach Peter Marshall said.

“Everyone chipped in. Everyone is buying in, and we’re going OK.

“We had three words yesterday: focus, intensity and hunt. And fair play, St Kilda bowled and fielded really well. I said at the break, ‘They’ve done that, we’ve got to replicate it’. And we did. But as I said to the boys after the game, great win, enjoy it, but it all goes down the toilet if we don’t back up against Greenvale Kangaroos.’’

Marshall said Chopra’s captaincy was outstanding.

“To me, that was a highlight, the way he rotated the bowlers, the way he kept the field up,’’ he said. Premier Cricket: Kingston Hawthorn, SECA in pathway agreement (Extract from Leader Newspaper 29 June 2021 written by Paul Amy)

The Hawks will lend their coaching and playing resources to talented young players in the South East association There’s nothing in writing, but Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club and the South East Cricket Association have shaken hands on a pathway for talented young cricketers.

Under the arrangement, the Hawks will provide coaches and training facilities for SECA under-age representative teams.

It had its genesis last season, when Kingston Hawthorn’s Under 16 team for the Premier Cricket competition was filled with boys from South East and Cricket Southern Bayside clubs. Hawks skipper Shorye Chopra is involving in the Kingston Hawthorn Academy program Kingston Hawthorn head coach Peter Marshall and senior players oversaw the team.

It trained and played matches at Walter Galt Reserve, with 10 clubs from either SECA or CSB represented.

The Under 16 competition will go to Under 17s next season and take the name of the Dowling Shield.

Try-outs and training for the SECA’s Under 16 Jim Beitzel and Keith Mackay Shield teams were held at Walter Galt, and the

Hawks supplied coaches for the Mackay line-up.

Marshall said the Kingston Hawthorn-SECA arrangement was a “great development opportunity’’ for junior cricketers aspiring to go to Premier Cricket.

He said SECA was not adopting the Hawks as an official feeder club but was happy for the players to tap into a Premier club’s resources.

“They’re not endorsing Kingston Hawthorn as their preferred Premier club,’’ Marshall said.

“But they see that we’re a Premier club in the SECA area and the bayside area which can give some guidance to the representative teams, and hopefully the players enjoy it and can join our senior XIs. It was very successful last year with the Page 33 | 61 Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club Annual Report | 2020/21

Under 16s and we’re continuing on with it for at least the next three years and hopefully longer.’’

Marshall said the Hawks needed to open their door to local talent.

“That’s where our success is going to come from, the development of young players in the local area.

“We’re not a club that’s going to go out and spend a lot of money recruiting experienced players. We need to develop cricketers from within our area.

“Kingston Hawthorn is a community club playing Premier Cricket and we have to make it a destination club for local kids wanting to go to that level.’’

Since May the Hawks have been holding an Academy program at YoungGun Cricket in Moorabbin, with Marshall, assistant coach Al Manning and senior players including captain Shorye Chopra overseeing the coaching of about 40 players aged 14 to 18.

A senior group starts at YoungGun tonight, ahead of official training starting on July 22.

Marshall encouraged any senior players from SECA looking to play Premier Cricket to try their luck with the Hawks.

Brighton Union’s Matt Vorbach did so last season and showed promise with the bat.

Meanwhile, Sam Newell has told the Hawks he will be switching to Dandenong in search of more opportunities as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

Newell played the last few matches of last season as a batsman and smashed 99 off 82 balls, with 12 fours and 5 sixes, before being run out against Melbourne University.

He had joined Kingston Hawthorn from Camberwell Magpies ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Joel Lewis has established himself as the Hawks’ first-choice gloveman.
