Treasurer’s report

The 2017/18 year was financially a very good year for the club.

We have managed to strengthen our cash reserves on the back of improved in- comes and a lower cost base. Arguably the biggest saving to the club this year was the vacant admin manager’s role, with your President and Vice President carrying the burden of the work with some support from other club members along the way.

Incomes were higher this year with the introduction of automated invoicing making it easier to track receipts from players and improve our ability to recoup some of the pre season costs. Sponsorships were up this year on the back of a major sponsorship from 2016-17 year not being recognised until this season, as well as fantastic support from our sponsors. We have also implemented improved recording of canteen income and expensed and reduced cash handling. This allows us to be more accurate with income. On the expenses side we had $15k reduction in administration costs on the back of the vacant position. The club is looking to split that role going forward and has a number of people interested in the various roles. The other main item was a write back of a provision for curating costs that the club has determined is no longer required. Overall this gives the club a reported $91,854 profit for the year. From a balance sheet perspective the club has improved it’s cash position by $20k and net assets by $37k. We have cleared our liabilities with only $7k owing for normal operating expenses at the close of the financial year.

As a result the club finds itself in a strong position to move forward, allowing more focus on the future of the club.

These premierships were won under the auspices of the Victorian Cricket Association. Prior to 1893 the competition was known as the Victorian Cricketers’ Association. For many years the 3rd and 4th elevens played in the Metropolitan Cricket League, prior to the requirement of the V.C.A. being that all clubs play 3 elevens in the VCA Competition.

The premiership in 1891/2 earned South Melbourne the title of “Champions of the Colony”, thus enabling them to play a match against Lord Sheffield’s touring England side, captained by W. G. Grace. The game, played at South Melbourne on January 9 & 11 1892, was the subject of a painting, the original of which is still held by the South Melbourne Cricket Club. It was during this tour that Lord Sheffield donated the sum of 150 pounds to go towards a Perpetual Shield for Competition between the Colonies-later known as the Sheffield Shield.
