‘Slats’ to Seven ___________________________________________________ Michael Slater to commentate Tests and BBL ___________________________________________________ (22 June, 2018) Australia’s former swashbuckling opener Michael Slater, is set to join Australia’s new home of cricket, Channel 7. Slater was Australia’s aggressive stroke-playing star at the top of the order for a decade, including during the team’s golden run of success where they won a record 16 consecutive Tests in a row. He has brought an upbeat, vibrant and fun style to his commentary that fans have enjoyed. Michael Slater commented: “I’m thrilled to be joining Channel 7. I’ve been a long-time fan of their sports coverage - particularly live sport - and can’t wait to join the new team and help give Test cricket and the Big Bash a fresh look and approach.” Channel 7 Head of Cricket Dave Barham said: “We’re absolutely rapt to have Slats join our team. He is a class broadcaster who will bring experience to our Test coverage, and all his trade mark energy to our BBL.” The Slater signing follows the announcement recently that Australia’s highest ever run-scorer, Ricky Ponting, and ‘The Bowlologist’ Damien Fleming will call Test matches and BBL on Seven. Seven’s historic six-year agreement with Cricket Australia runs from 2018 through to 2024, includes domestic free-to-air broadcast rights to all the Test Matches as well as 43 of the 59 BBL matches each season. East has a “strike rate” of a premiership every 6.7 seasons since it joined the competition in 1966-67 whilst South’s strike rate with its 5 flags is a premiership every 10.8 seasons, its five flags achieved during its 15 seasons “golden era” between 1961-62 to 1976-77. It was East-Belmont’s 10th straight consecutive win this season and South’s first loss in its last 9 games. ‘Not Cricket’: A ‘Nexus of Silence’ over the Cricket Match-fixing Scandal Michael Gross University of Wollongong [email protected] and [email protected] ABSTRACT An international cricket match-fixing scandal in 2000, the biggest crisis in the game’s 250 year history, disclosed corruption by many players and officials that cricket authorities had failed to address for a decade. Analysis of the case has revealed that institutional-wide behavior, conceptualized as the phenomenon of a ‘nexus of silence’, occurs in organizations and institutions where authorities decide to hide, rather than control, unethical behavior. This paper presents a substantive theory of a ‘nexus of silence’, developing current literature on organizational silence and organizational hypocrisy. Discussion on the applicability of a ‘nexus of silence’ to management theory and directions for future research completes the paper. Keywords: corruption, organizational silence, organizational hypocrisy, ethics, corporate governance, trust. INTRODUCTION On 7 April 2000, the cricket world was shocked by the news that Delhi Police had uncovered evidence that South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje and other players were associated with bookmakers in manipulating the results of international cricket matches. This watershed event created a media scandal with government inquiries in South Africa and India, public release of previous inquiry reports on match-fixing, and the establishment of an Anti-Corruption Unit by the International Cricket Council (ICC) which produced its own report on corruption in the game. The inquiry reports disclosed that, since the early 1990s, cricket was riddled with match-fixing corruption about which authorities had failed to act effectively. Indulging in ‘organizational hypocrisy’, where their decisions and actions were at variance with the espoused values of cricket, national and international authorities had allowed a ‘nexus of silence’ about match-fixing to envelop the institution preventing effective action to remove the corruption.

Michael Slater Former Australian test cricketer, commentator & MC Michael Slater is a former Australian test cricketer and cricket commentator. In 2008 he was appointed as commentator on Nine’s TODAY On Sunday to present the sports news, as a regular co-host of Wide World of Sports, as well as his cricket commentary role throughout the summer. A combative and wholehearted cricketer, Michael Slater (affectionately known as “Slats”) played many vital innings both for New South Wales and as an Australian opener with his adventurous brand of strokeplay. A product of Wagga Wagga, his was a meteoric rise. Following a stint at the Australian Cricket Academy, Michael Slater made rapid strides, turning a place in the New South Wales Second XI at the start of the 1992-93 season into a berth in Australia’s 1993 Ashes squad by the end of that summer. After notching a half-century in the opening match of that series – and complementing it with a brilliant century in the following encounter at Lord’s, Michael Slater soon became a regular in his nation’s Test team. Aside from the period between October 1996 and March 1998, Michael occupied a position at the top of the Australian Test batting line-up for close to a decade. Amid a golden run of success for the team as a whole, individual highlights have included his 219 against Sri Lanka in Perth in 1995-96; and his brilliant home series against New Zealand in 1993-94 (which netted him 305 runs at 76.25) and England (623 runs at 62.30) in 1994-95.

David Parkin is one of the few post-war footballers to both play in and coach AFL clubs to premierships. He captained Hawthorn to the 1971 flag before coaching Hawthorn to the 1978 premiership and then coaching Carlton to back-to-back premierships in 1981-82 and again in 1995. Perhaps his greatest coaching achievement was to lift Fitzroy into the 1986 preliminary final – its first in 26 years. David follows a distinguished list of greats who have been the Society’s guests at football season launch luncheons. ABSTRACT BURKETT, MELANIE LYNNE. Australian Legend, Australian Lives: The Interplay Between Representations of Early Nineteenth-Century New South Wales and the Experiences of Free Immigrants. (Under the direction of Brent Sirota). The early nineteenth century saw both the onset of Great Britain’s industrial revolution and a substantial wave of emigration to Britain’s colonies. In the Australian colony of New South Wales, the population of free immigrants grew significantly for the first time with the advent of government-assisted emigration in 1831, a time when the colony continued to receive transported convicts from Great Britain. Why did these free emigrants take the bold risk of leaving behind their homes and, furthermore, choose a penal colony for their destination? An examination of information available about the colony in the British popular press and of immigrants’ self-disclosed motivations (as recorded in diaries, reminiscences, and letters home) revealed an image of New South Wales as a place where immigrants could achieve financial stability, self-sufficiency, and access to the land. Following those personal documents through the immigrants’ early years in New South Wales uncovered the depths of the adjustment immigrants faced. Expectations set by the popular press were not always realized and immigrants found themselves living among unfamiliar types of people, including convicts. These frustrated and confounded expectations endured by some of the earliest free immigrants to the colony shaped the set of cultural values the young society embraced. As the colonies in Australia matured, a literary representation – a self-image – developed. Russel Ward christened this definitively masculine archetype the “Australian legend” and argued it evolved based on the experiences of the convicts.
