The Trees of Seattle University campus map was designed and illustrated by A​ lyssa Lau​, a Seattle University graduate in the class of 2018. Alyssa created the map to use her graphic design skills to promote education about the biodiversity on campus. Alyssa also created all of the tree drawings on the map, she did them by hand with colored pencil to capture the organic nature of the trees. Fujitaro Kubota​ was a legendary Japanese landscaper who emigrated to the United States in 1907 and worked on the Seattle U campus in the late 1950s and ‘60s. His family business, the Kubota Gardening Company, is still operating today and the garden headquarters can be visited in Renton, WA.

YOSHIKAZU SHIMIZU2 AND HIDEO TABATA 3 ABSTRACT: Native forest and scrub of Chichijima, the largest island in the Bonins, were classified into five types based on structural features: Elaeocarpus­ Ardisia mesic forest, 13-16 m high, dominated by Elaeocarpus photiniaefolius and Ardisia sieboldii; Pinus-Schima mesic forest, 12-16 m high, consisting of Schima mertensiana and an introduced pine , Pinus lutchuensis; Rhaphiolepis­ Livistonia dry forest, 2-6 m high, mainly occupied by Rhaphiolepis indica v. integerrima; Distylium-Schima dry forest, 3-8 m high, dominated by Distylium lepidotum and Schima mertensiana; and Distylium-Pouteria dry scrub, 0.3­ 1.5 m high, mainly composed of Distylium lepidotum. A vegetation map based on this classification was developed. Species composition and structural features of each type were analyzed in terms of habitat condition and mechanisms of regeneration. A group of species such as Pouteria obovata, Syzgygium buxifo­ lium, Hibiscus glaber, Rhaphiolepis indica v. integerrima, and Pandanus boninen­ sis, all with different growth forms from large trees to stunted shrubs, was subdominant in all vegetation types. Schima mertensiana , an endemic pioneer tree, occurred in both secondary forests and climax forests as a dominant canopy species and may be an indication of "ecological release," a characteristic of oceanic islands with poor floras and little competitive pressure. Some taxonomic groups (Callicarpa, Symplocos, Pittosporum, etc.) have speciated in the under­ story of Distylium-Schima dry forest and Distylium-Pouteria dry scrub.

Aspects of reproduction, fecundity, requirements for oviposition and development, development rates, temperature thresholds, thennal constants, and lifespan are detailed. T. obscuratus has been reported from at least 223 eqdemic and introduced plant species.

Recent studies have shown that Styrax and Sinojackia are monophyletic, Alniphyllum and Bruinsmia cluster into a clade with an approximately 20-kb inversion in the Large Single-Copy (LSC) region. Halesia and Pterostyrax are not supported as monophyletic, while Melliodendron and Changiostyrax always form sister clades . Perkinsiodendron and Changiostyrax were newly established genera of Styracaceae. However, the phylogenetic relationship of Styracaceae at the genera level needs further research. Results: We collected 28 complete plastomes of Styracaceae, including 12 sequences newly reported here and 16 publicly available complete plastome sequences, comprising 11 of the 12 genera of Styracaceae. All species possessed the typical quadripartite structure of angiosperm plastomes, and the sequence difference is small, except for the large 20-kb (14 genes) inversion region found in Alniphyllum and Bruinsmia. Seven coding sequences (rps4, rpl23, accD, rpoC1, psaA, rpoA and ndhH) were identied to possess positively selected sites. Phylogenetic reconstructions based on seven data sets (i.e., LSC, SSC, IR, Coding, Non-coding, combination of LSC+SSC and concatenation of LSC+SSC+one IR) produced similar topologies.

The length of the Symplocos chloroplast genome ranged from 156,961 to 157,365 bp. Overall, 132 genes including 87 functional genes, 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes were identified in all Symplocos chloroplast genomes. The gene order and contents were highly similar across the seven species. The coding regions were more conserved than the non- coding regions, and the large single-copy and small single-copy regions were less conserved than the inverted repeat regions. We identified five new hotspot regions (rbcL, ycf4, psaJ, rpl22, and ycf1) that can be used as barcodes or species-specific Symplocos molecular markers. These four novel chloroplast genomes provide basic information on the plastid genome of Symplocos and enable better taxonomic characterization of this genus.
