1905 Florence Bingham Kinne in the Pathology Department, becomes the first female instructor at Yale. 1910 First Honorary Degree awarded to a woman, Jane Addams, the developer of the settlement house movement in America and head of Chicago’s Hull House. 1916 Women are admitted to the Yale School of Medicine. Four years later, Louise Whitman Farnam receives the first medical degree awarded to a woman: she graduates with honors, wins the prize for the highest rank in examinations, and is selected as YSM commencement speaker. 1919 A Timeline of Women at Yale Helen Robertson Gage becomes the first woman to graduate with a Master’s degree in Public Health. Students selected will be visiting Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Columbia, MIT, and Penn during the summer. In addition, students will be able to tour the Statue of Liberty, historical Boston, the Liberty Bell, and other historical sites. The Ivy League Project will require students to attend a minimum of ve Saturday meetings scheduled throughout the school year. Students will learn about developing a vision, networking, and developing their leadership skills via team-building activities. Students selected are required to be in the 9th - 11th grade. We are proud to announce that we currently have over two hundred and ninety students who have been accepted or graduated from elite East Coast Schools during the past twenty years. As a participant, you will learn many eective steps for improving your application while applying to a college of your choice. In addition, you will be able to interact with Ivy League admission ocers and alumni who have extensive admission selection experience. HARVARD LAW SCHOOL’S PROMOTIONAL LITERATURE, 1829-1848 A REFLECTION OF THE IDEALS AND REALITIES OF THE STORY-ASHMUN-GREENLEAF ERA Michael von der Linn† OEL PARKER, CHARLES WARREN, and later scholars attribute Harvard Law School’s renaissance in the years spanning 1829 to 1848 to the endowment provided by Nathan Dane, the sup- J port of President Josiah Quincy, and the contributions of Jo- seph Story, John Hooker Ashmun, and Simon Greenleaf.1 These were indeed the primary reasons for the school’s remarkable growth. Another, which has received little attention, was an aggres- sive promotional campaign initiated by Story in the 1830s.2 This † Michael von der Linn is the manager of the Antiquarian Book Department of The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. 1 The law school’s faculty and staff consisted of two people during this period. Story was the superintendent; Ashmun handled most of the administrative duties. They divided the teaching load fairly evenly. This arrangement continued when Greenleaf joined the faculty after Ashmun’s death in 1833. Asahel Stearns, Story’s predecessor, directed the school from its establishment in 1817 to 1829. He was the sole administrator and primary instructor, but he shared his teaching duties with Isaac Parker, who held a joint appointment with Harvard College. 2 I have found two references. Warren, who provides the quote cited in Footnote 6, devotes a paragraph to this topic. Newmyer, perhaps based on his reading of Warren, mentions it as well.
