Recording the West: Central Asia in Xuanzang’s Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions Master’s Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Laura Pearce Graduate Program in East Asian Studies Ohio State University 2018 Committee: Morgan Liu (Advisor), Ying Zhang, and Mark Bender Copyrighted by Laura Elizabeth Pearce 2018 Abstract In 626 C.E., the Buddhist monk Xuanzang left the Tang Empire for India in a quest to deepen his religious understanding. In order to reach India, and in order to return, Xuanzang journeyed through areas in what is now called Central Asia. After he came home to China in 645 C.E., his work included writing an account of the countries he had visited: The Great Tang Dynasty Record of the Western Regions (Da Tang Xi You Ji 大唐西域記). The book is not a narrative travelogue, but rather presented as a collection of facts about the various countries he visited. Nevertheless, the Record is full of moral judgments, both stated and implied. Xuanzang’s judgment was frequently connected both to his Buddhist beliefs and a conviction that China represented the pinnacle of culture and good governance. Xuanzang’s portrayal of Central Asia at a crucial time when the Tang Empire was expanding westward is both inclusive and marginalizing, shaped by the overall framing of Central Asia in the Record and by the selection of local legends from individual nations. The tension in the Record between Buddhist concerns and secular political ones, and between an inclusive worldview and one centered on certain locations, creates an approach to Central Asia unlike that of many similar sources. -

Mao Zeddongo labai vertinamam romanui komunistai bandė uždėti „progresyvų“ antspaudą. Romano paslėpta religinė (budizmo) intencija liko nepastebėta nei skaitytojų, nei religijotyrininkų. The dissemination and localization of anime in China: Case study on the Chinese mobile video game Onmyoji Wuqian Qian The Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies Master Program in Asian Studies, 120 hp Autumn term 2016 Supervisor: Jaqueline Berndt English title: Professor Abstract In the 2017 Chinese Gaming Industry Report, a new type of video games called 二次 元 game is noted as a growing force in the game industry. Onmyoji is one of those games produced by Netease and highly popular with over 200 million registered players in China alone. 二次元 games are characterized by Japanese-language dubbing and anime style in character design. However, Onmyoji uses also Japanese folklore, which raises two questions: one is why Netease chose to make such a 二次元 game, the other why a Chinese game using Japanese folklore is so popular among Chinese players. The attractiveness of an exotic culture may help to explain the latter, but it does not work for the first. Thus, this thesis implements a media studies perspective in order to substantiate its hypothesis that it is the dissemination of anime in China that has made Onmyoji possible and successful. Unlike critics who regard anime as an imported product from Japan which is different from domestic Chinese animation and impairs its development, this study pays attention to the interrelation between media platforms and viewer (or user) demographics, and it explores the positive influence of Japanese anime on the Chinese creative industry, implying the feasibility of anime or 二次元 products to be created in other countries than Japan. -

Early Medieval China 8 (2002) 43 THE MAKING OF A SAINT: IMAGES OF XUANZANG IN EAST ASIA* Dorothy C. Wong University of Virginia The figure ofXuanzang 1: ~ (600-64), the celebrated Buddhist traveler and translator of early Tang China was revered in many different countries and inspired a variety of visual representations and commemorative objects. One of the most common in East Asian tradition is Xuanzang's portrayal as a pilgrin1 and itinerant, wearing sandals and carrying a backpack of siltra scrolls. We are also familiar with his portrayal in Journey to the West (Xiyou ji ~ iRl ~c) by Wu Cheng'en **)~, (ca. 1500-ca. 1582), a novel which fictionalizes Xuanzang's journey to India in the company of the mythical Monkey and other colorful characters. * In the research for this paper, I have relied on many pioneering studies by scholars of the distant past and of more recent times. A number of important sources are acknowledged in the notes but specifics ofthe arguments will not be repeated here except when pertinent. Early versions of this paper were pre sented at the College Art Association meeting of February 1999, Los Angeles, and at the International Conference on Dunhuang Studies held at the University of Hong Kong, July 2000. Picture this, when the Earth first began to rotate and when the sun just arose from the endless ashes. When the various creatures were first given L life, that was the age that I was born. When the age of creation was just about to emerge, that’s how our tale was written and how our adventure began. My life, before this adventure to the west, was pretty much spontaneous. Unexpected adventures always chased after me. When I was at the age of five million, I left the wizardry world of Olympus. Yes, it was depressing and heartbreaking to abandon the land that I’ve been breathing forever, however l was also delighted for the next destination of my anecdote. About a month after I left the Olympian wizardry world, I received an envelope with a golden feather inside. As soon as I unlocked the envelope, the feather swirled and pinned itself to my silver droopy hair, taking me to the grand, graceful palace of Olympian gods. A glittering rainbow filled the sky and gold had gobbled up the whole palace. The angelic statue of Cupid gracefully glistened as the sunlight gently shone through. Gorgeous melody from a golden harp was forming a pulchritudinous harmony with the glorious fountain. Whilst admiring the peaceful melody from the angel’s harp, a powerful voice flew down to my ears. “I sent the golden feather to bring you here,” Zeus blurted out his concern as he walked out of the Parthenon arch, “And this is why. -

De l'utilité de l'Inventaire des traductions en langue française des littératures d'Extrême-Orient (Itleo) pour l'enseignement des littératures asiatiques Pierre KASER Aix Marseille Univ, CNRS, IrAsia, Marseille, France Le présent colloque pose deux questions. Je dirais pour commencer que la réponse à la première des deux ― pourquoi enseigner les littératures asiatiques ? ― me semble, des deux, la plus aisée à formuler ; tout au moins plus facile à envisager en 2015 qu'il y a 50 ou 60 ans, lorsque Étiemble devait mettre toute sa verve et son enthousiasme en branle pour défendre ces littératures, invoquant même à l'occasion le futur rapport démographique en faveur du continent asiatique, ce que rappelle fort justement Emily Aper qui, dans ses Zones de traduction, rend hommage à l’auteur de Comparaison n'est pas raison1 : on ne peut plus, quels que soient les types de formations littéraire ou intellectuelle prises en considération, faire l'impasse sur les littératures asiatiques, si indispensables à la formation d'un habitant d'une planète mondialisée ! Reste maintenant à savoir comment procéder, et donc à affronter la seconde question : comment enseigner les littératures asiatiques ? L'interrogation recevra sans aucun doute autant de réponses que se présenteront de situations particulières. A Comparative Study of the Chinese Trickster Hero Sun Wukong Huanliang Lou Faculty Advisor: Dr. Gregson Davis Classical Studies Submitted date: May 2016 This project was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program in the Graduate School of Duke University. Copyright by Huanliang Lou 2016 Abstract Sun Wukong is a fictional hero from the Chinese classic The Journey to the West. As a well-known trickster, Wukong has a lot of similarities with several other tricksters around the world. In order to analyze him, I try to explain both his similarities with, and differences from, other tricksters, especially in the Ancient Greek folklore and myth traditions. In the Introduction, I discuss the formation process of The Journey to the West and its main character by tracing the historical records and referencing scholarly research. The most noteworthy stages of the formation throughout several centuries are arranged in the Introduction. The first half of the paper focuses on the general characteristics of tricksters. As a very distinctive group in global mythology, tricksters have particular features. The definition and symbolization of tricksters are illustrated by comparing Wukong and major Greek tricksters, such as Hermes, Odysseus, and Prometheus. The second part of the paper is concentrated on the heroic features of tricksters and the cultural values reflected in the Wukong narrative. How tricksters become cultural heroes is the main theme of Chapter Three. I explain their evolution by elaborating on the change in their nature mentioned in the second chapter. The fourth chapter illustrates the reason why Wukong is an East Asian cultural hero.
