NORTH KILWORTH NEWS December 2020 KEEPING YOU INFORMED A Lingering Lockdown Looms Hi folks! Well we had all hoped that a month’s lockdown would enable something approaching normal life to resume in December — sadly this is not going to be the case. It looks very likely that normal life is now suspended until after mass vaccinations have taken place — maybe by Easter? In which case it is more important than ever that we, as a community, look out for each other, support each other, and find ways of bringing a little joy into what is going to be a long winter. We had our first hard frost at the end of November and I went out early in the morning with my camera and got some great pictures—one of which now is print- ed our poster-size above our fireplace. It was such a delight seeing the beauty of a frosty morning in the North Kilworth coun- tryside and it gave me a real boost. As I have been carrying out the Lockdown Memories video project I have heard simi- lar stories from many people. We are re- discovering a capacity for finding moments of joy and awe in the simple everyday beauty around us. As we anticipate the Christmas Season— however odd it may be this year — can I wish you all many moments of joy and awe sprinkled throughout your days. TANK (Traffic Action North Kilworth) is coordinating this effort, with support from the Parish Council. A recent petition demonstrated that there is widespread support for this, and as a result we have engaged with local councillors to carry out traffic surveys. One of the unexpected consequences of lockdown is that car and 4x4 truck speeds seem to have increased as a result of quieter roads, and this is furthermore magnified by the increase in delivery drivers who are often unfamiliar with the area. The key areas of concern are traffic volumes (industrial, and private) combined with a lack of pave- ments and no crossing on the main Lutterworth road, dangerously excessive speeds on the South Kilworth road which passes the Primary School, and generally excessive speeds in the small roads around the village. TANK has linked up with the National 20isplenty campaign, which has been highly successful in driving behavioural changes across the country. An estimated 21 million people in the UK live within areas where 20mph zones are active. http://www.20splenty.org/ The result is a better and safer environment for the whole community. I don’t know how many of us have ventured afar recently, but for those who have driven along Pincet Lane towards the village you may have noticed that the road signs have had an early, and long overdue, spring clean? As a frequent user of this route it always bemused me how filthy they had become, partly because of the vegetation that had obscured them. Last year I had a walk down the lane, armed with my loppers, and gave them a trim. This helped the farmer somewhat to get a little closer with his tractor trimmer, but they were still in need of some tlc. So, the other week, I went down again with my mop and bucket and finished the job properly. They are still a little battle-worn, most likely due to the numerous car transporters using them as a means of finding the edge of the road … but that’s another story! David Helsby, Millennium Close Remembrance 2020 No official public ceremony was possible due to COVID restrictions. However on Sunday 8th Nov. a small, wreath laying ceremony was held. There were no colours, no bugler, no public presence. But in an inti- mate and dignified cere- mony prayers were said, the names of the fallen read out, and wreaths laid. At this ceremony Colin Clarke was able to wear a medal from the Malay- sian government in memory of those who fought in the 1955 con- flict there. This had been posthu- mously awarded to Colin’s dad, Victor. KEEPING YOU INFORMED Page 3 YOGA SESSIONS While Face to Face Sessions are Suspended due to COVID-19, I have taken my Yoga sessions on line. It started in May as an experiment to see how people took to it. The concept and the technology was new to many but came easy to others. We persisted and have continued ever since. Hopes were high in September when the Belgrave Village Hall re-opened it’s doors and I arranged some face to face sessions with those who felt it was right. Not everyone was ready for such a move so I continued on line every other week. Just as we got used to that, along came another lockdown and the Village Hall had to close again. Sadness all around but we keep each other smil- ing with our weekly sessions on line. Enjoy the Christmas Season - in whatever way you can. I Hope You Stay Active, Safe and Well.
