Letters to the Editor

Thank you for your informative monthly newsletter for the village. I recently moved to the village to be closer to family members across both Kilworths.

News that we topped the speeding poll was not remotely shocking for any villagers, sadly, and I am glad that this information has been recorded for the road safety teams across and Police.

However, I disagree with the author regarding the need for a pedestrian crossing. I regularly have to cross the road and, despite the speed of drivers, there is certainly not the frequency of vehicles to make crossing it difficult.

What the results tell me is that in one patch of the village where it's pretty obvious you should slow down to most people, there were still so many who missed it. As someone on the edge of the village I find it very worrying how fast drivers enter the village from Walcote despite there being a junction straight after the start of the 30mph zone. Even the big car transporters race into the village well above the speed limit.

I believe that the real battle the village can win is the one learnt from our Walcote neighbours, where an average speed limit through their village has made it a much safer environment for This letter has residents and road-crossers. An average speed limit would force drivers to reduce their speed to been forwarded on 30mph upon entrance to the village and then maintain that speed throughout the whole course of to the Parish the village. Slower drivers would mean that, with the existing volume of cars combined, we would Council and we have a much safer road to cross. await their response I would hope that this is something that the parish council feels able to push for with the relevant authorities.

Best wishes, Rachel Vincent

We read with interest the January Newsletter, especially the article regarding the North Kilworth Whisting Alliance. Who are the North Kilworth Whisting Alliance? and who formed this?

We both have never heard of this, and as Ivor and I both ran the Whist Drives for a considerable amount of time. We find it unusual that it has never been brought to our attention.

The £3.300 Millenium grant to promote the game in North Kilworth. Who took control of this money when issued?

Every Whist Drive that we ran, all the Playing Cards, Whist & Raffle Prizes, (usually amounting to over 20 items each time) and not forgetting the Refreshments, was purchased and paid for by ourselves, with the exception, when players kindly donated items for the prize giving.

The only Monies we held were for the float for the entrance for the game, £8. and £8 float for the raffle. At the end of each afternoons entertainment. ALL MONIES were donated to either local clubs/societies or to National Charities.

Kind Regards. Anita & Ivor Winston.

Dear Editors In response Ivor and Anita were thanked profusely for their work in the village through the North Kilworth News, before they left the village. Millennium grants could not be applied for without a group being formed and this was a considerable time before their involvement. The grant was spent across Leicestershire and Northamptonshire in supporting Whisting Groups and those isolated in rural communities. “Help the Aged” agreed the grant and received a full account of the expenditure, which was time limited. A copy of this is available for viewing. Yours sincerely Rachel Root KEEPING YOU INFORMED Page 3

History Why did people get stuck in The Bogs at North Kilworth? Corner The answer was because that is where springs rise up from the aquifer which North Kilworth sits upon, so creating a boggy area: this used to be much more extensive than it is today. Indeed dozens of ancient leather shoes have been found in the vicinity.

The area lies at the bottom of Cranmer Lane, which once skirted round The Bogs on the medieval route to Husbands Bosworth – long since gone of course. The name ‘Cranmer’ probably comes from ‘Crane Mere’ flocks of Cranes coming to the mere at the end of the lane. In 1533 an act of parliament was passed making the taking of Crane’s eggs an offence.

The large North Kilworth aquifer has been used by villagers for centuries, probably from at least Roman times, as indicated by extensive pottery finds. In fact the presence of high quality spring water could well have been the reason people settled here in the first place.

The aquifer is formed by the unusual geology of a gravel layer sandwiched between two clay layers. The springs break through where the gravel meets the surface at The Bogs. The North Kilworth aquifer is noted by hydrologists for its quality of water and rare formation.

The purity of water was such that it was still used by villagers until 1956, when tap water was introduced. Evidence of where people drew the water can still be seen in wells in gardens and houses in the Village. The flow of water started with a well near Little London and went past the Little Well and ‘Along the Bottoms’ to the Millenium Green.

The abundance of water was such that in Victorian times it was the main water supply for Market Harbrough, drawn from bore holes up Pincet Lane.

Many thanks to the o North Kilworth The Springs emerge at The Bogs at a constant 12 C, producing its own unique ecology. Obituary Notice - Ruby Morley

Sadly we have to announce that our Mum Mrs Ruby Morley died on Saturday February 16th 2019. She would have been 103 in June and for over 95 of her years lived in North Kilworth at Yew Tree House on Back Street.

She was born in London in 1916, our Grandfather Herbert Bennett, whose family had lived in the village for generations, had been drafted into Woolwich Arsenal to work in munitions. He was considered too old (at 40) for active war service. He had met our Grandmother Mary when she came to work for the Entwistle family at Kilworth House.

Mum and Dad (Ted) brought up their family at Yew Tree House, us two and our late sister Anne Granger. Mum was a regular churchgoer, active in the WI, organised local whist drives as well as serving on the Village Hall committee for many years. She leaves us, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

We will hold a service of thanksgiving for her in St Andrews Church on Thursday March 7th at 2.15pm where those who wish to are most welcome to join us.

Jane Robson and Margaret Aldwinckle

Children’s Society Thank You

A big thank you to all those who have donated to the invaluable work of the Children’s Society. By popping loose change or notes into a collecting box, the young people supported by the Children’s Society can begin to face a new and brighter future. If you would like to help secure a happier, brighter future for disadvantaged young people, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will willingly supply you with a collecting box which I empty annually. The total raised in North Kilworth in 2018 was £234.37 Thank you so much, Anne Vincent Children’s Society Box Co-ordinator Tel: 01858 881194 [email protected]

Here are just some of the things the Children’s Society do:

Right now in Britain there are children and young people who are facing one, or many disadvantages. We work with these young people step by step for as long as it takes. Children are facing a multitude of problems in our society today. From dealing with the issues that arise from growing up in poverty, to having problems at home – domestic violence or substance misuse – these young people may develop mental health problems and then feel like their best option is to run away from home.

We support children and young people who have arrived into this country on their own and are battling with the immigration system. Our services give them someone to turn to and our policy work ensures that the system supports them as much as possible. We work to tackle abuse and neglect and support the victims through their trauma. Our work with authorities to ensure that children that are victims of criminal exploitation are seen as victim and not criminals – we are seen as leaders in our field and support young people as they come to terms with the exploitation they have faced.

There are no simple answers so we work with others to tackle complex problems. Page 10 NORTH KILWORTH NEWS

All in 1 hour! As we all tasted the dishes we all agreed that her simple but delicious recipes would be tried out at home! How she found time to fit everything into her life was remarkable Just feeding her 11 dogs and 17 cats would take me most of the day!! We had a £1 table at the meeting and this will be ongoing so if you have any items which would otherwise be discarded – books, jigsaws etc please bring them along. SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2017 COSTA NOVEL AWARD and written by the bestselling author of ‘When God was a Rabbit’ the novel is an emotional story of love in all its forms. It is a beautifully written tale of the life of one man and the key emotive points of his life. Packed within its 200 pages are themes of the many aspects of friendship, love and loss. All evoked with great sympathy.
